I'm a little surprised Doug didn't mention one very particular instant in the "Dash and Violet run from mooks" sequence: When Dash realizes he can run on water, he giggles a little, then goes faster. A lesser film might've had him say "I can run on water? That's awesome!" Nope, just the giggle of a little boy realizing he was right, he CAN do something extraordinary and cool.

Here's a fact that everyone knows , but yet seems to forget, Frozone was actually the next target, Mirage switched to Mr. Incredible, and if you noticed the robot was most likely progammed to Frozone, as a volcano would nullify his powers, making him an easy target.

13:31 - You TOTALLY missed the subtle storytelling in the flashback. When Buddy was talking with Mr Incredible in the opening, Bomb-voyage was there, but in Buddy's flashback he wasn't. many first chalked it up as a continuity error, but when you think about how much Buddy was fanboying over Mr Incredible, it makes sense he never saw the danger there.
That'd be line someone fanboying SO much over Batman, wanting to be the next Robin, that they don't see the danger with Batman fighting a villain at that moment.

Forgetting a vital detail of the scenario he was in when Bob rejected him adds a brilliant bit of nuance to Syndrome's psychology. To quote the Joker "Memory's so treacherous."
Another detail is that I don't think Buddy ever realised that Bomb Voyage had thrown a bomb onto his cape. I don't think that part was even a false memory for the adult Syndrome. Buddy just literally never noticed the bomb, even when Bob yelled at him and was literally hanging from his cape to save him from it. In Buddy's mind, Bob was trying to hold him back.

Its also a reflection of the quote by Tom Hiddleston, "Every villain is a hero in his own mind". Only the most cartoonishly evil and simple, straightforward villains might acknowledge or see themselves as such and revel in it. Most villains, even if they acknowledge their methods are morally objectionable, rationalize and justify such measures by "the ends justify the means" and that they are really doing a good thing, and anyone who gets in their way is the actual villain.
Syndrome himself directly references this by calling himself a hero and wanting to portray himself as one, while seeing supers as the 'real' villains, for having powers and (in his mind) acting superior to those without, feeling slighted by their competency.

I think this film holds up better as an adult than as a child. You see a lot more clever things. For example: Mirage was originally looking for Frozone. What do I mean, the Omni droid lead Mr. Incredible towards the volcano so that “Frozone” wouldn’t use his powers against the droid. The droid was programmed to fight against Frozone. If you remember that the fire was started by Mirage and/or assistances. Then after the fire, Mirage is surprised to see Mr. Incredible

I really like your points however we're not shown Mirage being the cause of the fire, yes its a logical conclusion since they were tracking him but who's to say a potential disaster set up was even necessary (it wasn't for Bob). My bigger issue is how exactly they found out Frozones identity. Outside of his monolog story (which doesn't necessarily have to be recent) it seems like he only fights crime with Bob. I suppose evidence of frozone is way easier to see. But I don't think just seeing some ice would be enough for them to launch an operation. They had to be keeping tabs on him especially to know he goes out on Wednesday nights. (Thank you for making put way more thought into a 20 year old kids movie)

Another Fun Fact: Helen's use of radio protocol while flying is exceptionally accurate for a movie. In the director's commentary, Brad Bird tells that Holly Hunter insisted on learning the lingo and its meaning. The terminology used hints that Elastigirl has had military flight training. "VFR on top" means she is flying in the regime of Visual Flight Rules "on top" of a cloud cover. She requests "vectors to the initial", directions how to get to the initial landing approach. "Angels 10" is her altitude call, ten thousand feet, this is a military term. Civilian flights use the term "flight level". "Track east" is her direction of travel. "Buddy spike(d)" is a U.S. Military brevity code meaning "friendly anti-aircraft radar has locked on to me, (please don't shoot)." "Transmitting in the Blind Guard" is a call on the emergency frequency where two-way communication has not been established. "Abort" is also a military brevity code, a directive meaning "stop the action/mission/attack." It should be noted that the term "angels", while popular for the first half of the twentieth century, is outdated. As the "present day" story takes place in 1962 and having flight experience clearly took place in the fifties, this is an appropriate term.

NC says that he wished that the film would have focused on the family more, yet praised the movie as having a believable and compelling family anyways. That tells me that we got just enough of them to sink the audience into this stylish retro-futuristic 50’s world. It feels like Bird took a lot of notes from Don Bluth movies, and gave us a movie whose dark moments are genuinely weighty while still keeping the movie light and fun as a whole. It’s phenomenal.

So for those who don’t know, the two Old Guys who appear in both the Iron Giant and the Incredibles are caricatures of two Disney animators, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, who worked on many of Disney’s classic films.
They were part of Disney’s “Nine Old Men”. Brad Bird mentored under the Nine Old Men (mostly with Milt Khal) when he apprenticed at Disney in the late 1970s. It’s a pretty cool story actually, he sent a film to Disney at the age of 14 which caught their attention and they brought him on as a an “unofficial trainee”, unheard of at the time. It was a period of time where a lot of Disney’s top people were approaching retirement age and they were thinking about how to train younger animators to take over.
After attending CalArts several years later (his classmates included future big names like Tim Burton , John Lasseter, and Henry Selick among others) he ended up working for Disney but left after a couple of years since his very outspoken nature clashed with the more conservative management at the time. And the rest is history!
So yes, those two Old Guys aren’t just random characters, they’re animation legends! They had both sadly passed away by the time Incredibles 2 came along, so that’s why they didn’t make an appearance.

An animation breakthrough for all intents and purposes. Then, to prove they could do it again, the had Edna put her entire arm through the hole at her house. There's actually another version of the plane scene that was partially voiced and animated. The guy Helen calls on the phone to borrow the plane, Snug, was going to be piloting it instead of Helen. He would have died after the missiles hit and Helen had to leave his body behind to save the kids

The most underappreciated moment in the movie is Bob's reaction to hearing Helen, in utter desperation, radio in that "there are children on board". He's forced to listen to what might be his wife's last moments, helpless to do anything about it, and then, right at the apex of the fear, he hears that. Absolutely chilling.

I feel like there was a moment in the live action Supergirl series that was directly inspired by the famous "cape scene" you reference at 13:08 It was when they were doing a montage of costume designs for her and a capeless one caused her to take a turn too wide and crash into a truck, turns out the resistance caused by the cape made high speed cornering easier and revealed a practical reason for Superman's suit having it. To this day I'm certain that was made to DIRECTLY reference AND contradict Edna's "no capes" rule.
I also love how they show Mirage is obviously attracted to Bob even though they never crossed that line into affair territory (which the deleted/alternate scenes on the DVD show WAS going to be a plot point.) Assuming she's about the same age as Syndrome she would have been a kid or young teen in Mr. Incredible's heyday, he was probably her first crush.
17:47 holy crap, I just realized the trap that caught Mr. Incredible is MINETA'S QUIRK! Mineta, the grape headed kid from My Hero Academia...I know Horikoshi was inspired by American comics when he made that series but did he watch THIS too?

He was actually gonna be flying the plane and when Helen was forced to choose who to save, she leapt towards her kids with her old friend being blown up with the plane and sinking into the sea.

Something that took me years to realize was that there was a specific reason the first Omnidroid fight took place in a lava-filled area. Frozone was specified to have been the original target before they switched last minute to Bob. Had things gone according to plan, that would've likely ended up being his fight instead, and inevitably, his end given that his powers don't work well in heat-based areas.

    • @Spudtron98

Also, he's actually a good twist villain. He's not a character that has one personality throughout most of the movie and then flips during the third act. The twist here is that someone from the beginning of the film is the villain. Plus, they allow him ample time to be a villain by reintroducing him around the half way point.
