Great video man. I can't believe I haven't looked at more of your videos. I've been thinking of getting a MP for some time, but the M6 I have just performs so well. But I also think that analog Leicas are the best tools, and when their prices don't go crazy like the M6 for example, then it's worth it. Nicos I understand why you prefer the M2 over the MP! I have a wonderful M4 from 1970-1971. It cost me «only» 700€, and I had it serviced completely for 350€. Now it’s as good as new. I had a M6 TTL before (wish I had waited to sell it when I see the prices now!😁), but I really prefer the M4. The main reason is the viewfinder. Before the M4-P the viewfinder was more accurate at working distances (2-3m), then the frame has been shrinked (so they could add the 28mm frame I heard…) I also like the absence of the 75mm frame which disturbs the vision.... And I never liked the lightmeter on the TTL which ate too much battery… The Voigtlander VCII meter is as accurate and more battery efficient. And if one day it doesn't work anymore I'll be glad it's not part of the camera. I like the camera to be only mechanical.
I’ve been shooting with the MP for a few years now. Love it! It makes me want to go out and shoot. Recently I got an M5 as well. Mainly for the history of it. Haven’t had a chance to shoot that one yet but I’m looking forward to putting a few rolls of film through it. For me it just comes down to what camera makes it a joy to shoot. Plus I can pass it on to my son someday.

It is a great investment and camera, I loved the black MP too, but couldnt justify it to myself having other M cameras that did a good job too. Enjoy it! And shoot it all the time!

I agree 100% Nico, the M2 is a lighter, better camera. Great with Leica's simple grip. great if you use 35mm. M3/MP too heavy with brass plates. M2 has uncluttered and single frame lines for 35 & 50. You can take it up to Harlem past midnight and not worry about the old M2, the film advance is buttery smooth. They can easily be serviced. The go on forever. Unfortunately, folks have caught on and their prices are now 1500/2000+ and rising - get one while you can!
Finally pulled the trigger on an MP after lusting after it for years but after using it for a while I ran into the same dilemma as you! I picked up my M6 TTL again and just found the large shutter dial to be so much nicer, and the way it turns in the same direction as the meter arrows is also more intuitive. The main issue I have with the MP is that it feels too dainty and jewel like. It’s machined so perfectly that you get a bit scared to shoot with it. M6TTL on the other hand feels like a no nonsense tool. Ended up keeping the MP though, as it still can be repaired.
I've never fallen for the allure of a Leica, mind you, I've never used one either. But something you said in this video is something that occurred to me the other day. The reason I still shoot film, apart from the craft and physicality, is because I love using my OM1 and OM2 cameras. I am exactly the same way. I have always been a film user because I have a handful of film cameras that I love and work well for me. I have had a few digital cameras over the years but I ended up selling them because when I go to reach for a camera, it is always one of my film cameras, so the digital camera sits around not getting used.

I live in the basque country and we have them everywhere, its called a Fronton in Spanish, we play Jai Alai, Pelota mano and other sports. As far as I know its originally from here, but I could be wrong.
Do the silver chrome Leicas such as the M2/3/4 not brass? Obviously not like the black ones, but I thought they should still show off the brass layer after long enough.
Maybe I'll keep my M2, then :-) I was actually thinking of getting an MP or an M7, but I think I'll give the M2 a nice CLA in stead. Like you, I really like the rewind knob and advance lever on the M2.
I got an MP in January and have shot dozens of rolls through it. It's great. I wanted a vintage film Leica as well and ended up getting a IIIf - if you haven't shot a III series Leica, I highly recommend it. They are much less money than a vintage M and a different kind of shooting experience, esp if you don't like to shoot with a meter.
nothing beats the M2 & the M3, which is prob the best combo if you shoot 35mm with one & 50mm/90mm with the other. MP/MA is great but doesn't get to the same level of quality of those old cameras.
M2 is much lighter than the MP. Also not having to worry about exposure (when you press the shutter release) feels liberating. There is a reason Leica went to M-A from M-P, as they know what is the essence of the Leica experience.
I purchased 2 used Leica's, one m2 as well as one M6 Titanium, booth had issues and went back. Yes I know they could be fixed, but using a Leica should be fun. So I baught a brand new black paint MP and boy am I happy I did.
I shoot with the Leica M3 (double-stroke). I have looked at the M-P and the M-A, partially for the brighter, modern viewfinder, and the ability to shoot 28mm & 35mm without an external viewfinder. However, they removed the self-timer on the M-P and M-A, yet retained a frame-line selector lever. To me, that is idiotic. I actually use the self-timer to take pictures of myself with my kids. I don't have a frame-line selector on my M3, and I have absolutely never thought "Oh man, I would really like to be able to see those frame-lines without taking off my lens or putting a different one on." If they hadn't done that, I would be way more tempted by the M-P and M-A.
I think you'd be hard pressed to get a good condition M2 for €500. Cheapest on UK eBay at the moment is £800 (€900) and Irish eBay about €900. I'd recommend factoring in another €150 for a potential partial service if you get it off eBay. (I'm lucky to have a camera repair shop around the corner. More if you have to ship it.) You may not need it but better to be prepared. So for an M series Leica to actually use regularly I'd say someone should budget at least €1,000 + a lens. You could always get a IIIf with a Russian lens though ;) Of course now you've featured the M2 prices will hike again :)
I bought my m2 for 600 euros in the Leica Store of Sttutgart, exactly 1 year ago. Now I use the m2 along with m6, the lenses are (21mm, 35mm, 50mm and 90mm). I'm very happy with my kit.
I have a Leica MP and it is the best camera I have ever owned. I reckon i would probably feel the same way if I had an M2, M3 etc. They are all Leicas. I love all Leica M cameras.
As a non Leica user that cant see any advantages beyond Jewellery, I have to say this video is refreshingly honest, and isn’t contriving excuses or reasons to own one that lots of other bloggers resort to. Great show, and valuable news, becoming addicted !
Well, old Leicas are way more than jewelry...My M2 is an amazing piece of equipment and an absolute joy to shot. I literally look forward to pressing the shutter button each time...Have you ever heard anyone claim this about, say, Canon Eos 1D? :) i prefer the M2 by far to my DSLR...it is only matched by my Hasselblad 503 cx. My 5 cents.
I have two 0.85 M6's, but lust after an M2 for one main reason: single frame line sets for each focal length lens that I typically use. But, they're so dang expensive now!
Hello Nico, I want an M-A. It has that purely mechanical manual "thing" that I like. Roll on December., when I will have enough money to pick one up brand new. Can't wait!
I've got one of the most boring M2 variants as well. Lever rewind, silver finish, self timer, absolutely nothing special. Would I love to have a black painted one with no self timer? Sure. But I can shoot this one as I like and not care about how it looks or what happens to it. I don't have to baby it at all, top plate has some serious corrosion (was left on a shelf by the previous owner with the clip on light meter) and maybe I'll get it refinished in black enamel sometime but seriously, who cares? It'll look better for sure but it won't become a better camera by any means. About that clip on meter, mine came with a working MR4. One unexpected experience I had with that meter is that it forces me to think of the exposure settings and how the light looks in the scene before I lift the camera to my eye. I was going through the same with my Rollei and Hasselblad but had never noticed that, probably because I never bring those to my eye, heh. The super clear viewfinder of M2 with no distracting paired frame lines with no exposure info underneath is more attractive to me than an MP, M7 or M6 because while I'm looking through the finder, all I have to care about is the composition and the moment. To me, this is what makes M2 so much more fun to use than most other cameras, including quite a few other Leica M cameras.
black mp with a .58 viewfinder is my 35mm grail. Probs won't ever happen. I am like you tho, I prefer bang per buck offerings. my favourite Leica has always been the m5. that shutter dial with the readout in the VF make it so quick to use.
Never shot the M2. Have only had the MP and I still shoot professionally w both of them. Love them. But wouldn't mind shooting an M2 for the heck of it.
It's funny how that works. I love my M6 (which I know you don't like so much), but don't really like shooting with my M9 at all (which I inherited). I realize there's a film/digital thing going on with those, too, but I also shot with an M10 for a weekend, and loved shooting with it. But I can't afford one of those :(. To some all this must sound like crazy Leica nonsense, but the shooting experience really does play a big part in it--and not just with Leicas. You have to go with what you like using for hours/days/weeks on end.
Hey! Thanks for sharing, your videos about M2 kind of tipped the scales for me. I've wanted to get M2 for a couple years now, but my main dislike was the shots counter. I really love the classic one on Leicas. At the same time while I was "thinking" all Leicas went up in price once again. But yesterday I've managed to get a nice deal for a bit worn but quite cool M2 with Color-Scopar. Now given the state and the deal it can even make sense to send it for re-skin (even with re-paint) when I'll be doing the proper CLA and the altogether price will still be somehow same by today's standards. Thanks!
A black MP is very saleable whilst it's mint. Soon as it's brassed, it loses its market. Collectors want mint, old men want mint. Buy silver finish if you want to protect the cameras value. . Further, if Leica was making the M3 today, imagine what the price would be. Much more than the MP I'd suggest. 😊😊
If you want a meter, for the $5,000 that an MP costs, buy 5 M6s. Or one M6 (or M7) and 4 lenses. (Used lenses. Avoid the monstrously expensive, enormously huge f1.1 modern lenses.)
@Artemio Medina Yikes, you're right! I have an M6 that I bought about 15 years ago for maybe $700. So I'm about 10 years out of date on pricing. Still, you could get 2 M6s for the price of an MP, and get free rewind cranks as part of the deal. :-)
i have a used MP with some patina that i really like. found a cheap Leicavit for it too. used to have a Biogon 35mm for it which i loved for Color film. got the cron asph but i still prefer the zeiss looks and colors
Hi Nico I where almost buying a Leica MP. But I ended up buying a Nikon F3 for for 398 with 1 year of warranty ! And yes it gives me a fantastic feeling everytime I shoot with it. I do already have a leica but its a digital its the monochrom typ 246. So I somehow did not want one more leica. I wanted to try something different so my friend kept saying try the F3 try the F3 I had mine for 30 years. So I tried it and wauw
@@NicosPhotographyShow Yeah here we had in 15 days only two days with few hours of sun, else just rain and wind. But okay its winter, By the way I just got my Nikon back because yes I somehow broke the rewind knob. But I got Nikon to put a new one and fully serviced too and man its just so nice to use. And a early present for myself a Nikkor 24 mm F/2.8 AI beside the 50 mm F/1,4 ai. So when sun comes people has to expect a dude burning film rolls 😂😂😂
I tested & used maybe 18-20 Leica M2 & M3 ‘s in my life. But the thing is that they all have been tweaked/ fixed up by so many different people over the decades. They all have different feel to their winder as well as the shutter sound / feel. Not to mention various cracks n wear of the vulcanite. You simply can Not know what the original feel was like. Therefore, I rather get New M-P or M-A , so that I know Leica’s intended feel & shooting experience.
I have had almost all leica M models you can have. My main camera right now: Zorki 3. When you have the zorki 3 or 4 serviced very well with new curtains and proper grease it works just as good as a leica. I know some people will disagree but as a camera technician I can say that most leicas are overrated considering the price of a zorki
If it feels right, then it is the camera for you. If you buy a camera for status, well that is great and it supports the industry, but if the camera is not used it is a shame.
@@NicosPhotographyShow snagged one and got new leather from Asahi and a clean undamaged top. Figured the top is coming off, might as well exchange it while I'm doing the CLA. Within a couple thousand serial numbers, so comfortable with it. Plus ... its going to be my first CLA on my own. Doesn't seem to be to hard.
I bought a used M3 10 years ago for 500€. For another 500€ I let her refurbish. She is still in top condition and I find she has the best viewfinder of all Ms. Even better as the modern MP... I will not give her away anymore...
Yes the M3 is a great camera, and if you are a 50mm person like me it’s probably the best! But I chose the M4 because the M3 seems less serviceable, especially the rangefinder... (possible but very expensive and in few places I think...)
I have a Leica Q, its a wonderful digital compact, great images etc..., but digital still feels less involving than the real thing, a classic analog film camera like Leica is my grail. Like TRON I wish to return to the real world.
I still don‘t get how people can find the leica light meter confusing; guys it‘s two arrows showing either over or under exposure, it‘s not that complicating 🙈
Im sooo used to the no lights that i like the clean look. When i see arrows it makes me loose my concentration. But I know its me, some people like it and good for them.
@@NicosPhotographyShow - the eye watering sums for film Leicas makes me feel an MP is actually the best way forward taking into account age/wear. Sure a Leica can be repaired but adds to the initial cost. Maybe I'll stick with my FM3a

The M2 prices were the ones I paid, I do know now they sell for almost 1K but that why I said one could get 3 M2 for the price of a MP.
My 5 cents.
Fantastic advice. I am keeping my M3. Sorry MP.
if you want black and brass, just get your m2 refinished. :P
That is how my old Hasselblad 500 CM is. The sounds and feelings are much nicer than on my Leica SL2.
I have two 0.85 M6's, but lust after an M2 for one main reason: single frame line sets for each focal length lens that I typically use. But, they're so dang expensive now!
They are never going to be cheap again.
@@user-ti9zc1xv2b True. Wish I would have bought one years ago.
@@alanhuntley55 I've got 5 in my collection. Dm me if you need one
I really wish you would’ve tried to describe why you prefer the M2 over the MP
Hello Nico,
I want an M-A. It has that purely mechanical manual "thing" that I like.
Roll on December., when I will have enough money to pick one up brand new.
Can't wait!
I have used the M-A once and it was amazing! Hope you get it.
Funny, I came here direct from Cole Porter singing "You got that thing".
I'm always thinking of selling my M-A for maybe m6 and lens lol. I guess we are just all lusting something we don't own.
The M2 and the IIIg were the best they ever built. Very sad they are no longer available new.
Thanks!
Something tells me this will be my favorite model now too and this is not the last M2 body I will get 😅
A black MP is very saleable whilst it's mint.
@Artemio Medina Yikes, you're right!
I have an M6 that I bought about 15 years ago for maybe $700. So I'm about 10 years out of date on pricing.
Still, you could get 2 M6s for the price of an MP, and get free rewind cranks as part of the deal. :-)
M2 for life I have a button rewind :)
Me too, best camera I own. Wont ever get rid of it.
i have a used MP with some patina that i really like. found a cheap Leicavit for it too. used to have a Biogon 35mm for it which i loved for Color film. got the cron asph but i still prefer the zeiss looks and colors
Stefano thats great to hear, the F3 is a dream camera! keep shooting and enjoying it.
@@NicosPhotographyShow Hi thank you very much ! As soon the weather gets better I will be out and burn through some rolls 😂😂😂😎😎
I hear you, same here, weather is not calling me out at all.
I am lucky to own the MP and the M-A. The M-A just feels better to me (mechanically) and more fun to use. Can't really explain why.
You are double lucky. Now I want to try the M-A!
You look so much better without the suit!!!
I do it to look upgraded when I take it off.
Both good cameras but you do not state exactly what it is about the M2 you prefer over an MP.
They are both great. I like that the M2 is cheaper and no meter.
Have you ever shot a Leica M5?
I have had almost all leica M models you can have. My main camera right now: Zorki 3. When you have the zorki 3 or 4 serviced very well with new curtains and proper grease it works just as good as a leica. I know some people will disagree but as a camera technician I can say that most leicas are overrated considering the price of a zorki
I exchanged mine for a Nikon D3 in a fit of film is dead, long live digital, DOHHHH!!!!!!!!! I want another MP.
If it feels right, then it is the camera for you. If you buy a camera for status, well that is great and it supports the industry, but if the camera is not used it is a shame.
Fuck, where you getting M2s for
It was a while ago, but with patience you can find them. But I would recommend giving them a CLA once you find a cheap M2.
@@pinkeye00 Good luck!
Leica MP means MESSSUCHER PROFESSIONELL or Professional Rangefinder. Not Mechanical Perfection.
Cool to know, had no idea.
My photographic skill was coming on when shooting with Nikon in the 1980/90s, todays lazy ass sophisticated digital image processing gimmicks took me down a different path entirely. Like TRON I wish to return to the real world.
Nice! Film is a different approach and experience.
Those of us that shoot everyday, read light better than the center-weighted meter (which doesn't know our intended shot). I agree with Nico.
owned + 20 film M, from M2 to M6J, plenty of MP, Ma , M7, M6…. keep only one, the M4-2 , the best ever M!
i wonder if its the same feel with the MA..
I own m4 but m2 was my 1st dream Leica :3 Until i got lucky to buy m4 so cheep
I have an M2 & would not swap for any other Leica. 🕊❤️🤗🙏📷
Good choice! I'm in the same boat, best camera for my use.
you sound like me and the M6, that I wish I never sold.
not a lot people can land their MPs out
It wasn’t meant for me.
Wise words
Its been my experience with the camera, but like I said, speaking about it makes me want it again!
@@NicosPhotographyShow - the eye watering sums for film Leicas makes me feel an MP is actually the best way forward taking into account age/wear. Sure a Leica can be repaired but adds to the initial cost. Maybe I'll stick with my FM3a
I know Your fealing. I have buing old camera to save some money and get any of m Leicas. After i got my m4 damn..... Actuallu M2 was my dream Camera and i wish someday someone will borrow me one. :3
What are "the best things in life"?
They are analog.
Buy it. Don't buy it. It feels great. Not as great as an M2. I'm just glad to not be in the market for one right now...(How much does an MP cost, Google?)
I love my m3 and m6
I love my M2, its all a matter of personal taste. There is one M for each kind of photographer ;)
You like that awful rewind knob?!
Yap you are right! Also I love your color balance of your background studio.
Thank you!
When I was shopping for a Leica rangefinder, I narrowed my search to an MP, an M2, and an M6. I purchased an M6 because that was the first body I found that was available in good condition and for a fair price.
I have been very happy with my decision, however, I would still like to try an M2 and an MP.
Not a bad choice at all, and honestly after not having the MP for a bit my compulsive buying disorder wants an MP again...
600 euro for an m2 ? Hahah maybe in the 1970 ..
I have bought two over the years at that price or less, still see some every now and then but dont need more.
@@NicosPhotographyShow probably in the USA man .. in Europa they are way more expensive .. unless you buy a body that is all scratched up or doesn’t work it’s very difficult to get one for that price .. or maybe you are just a smarter shopper than me .. who knows
Im based in Spain and bought both here (Europe). You got to be patient.
Clickbait video 😄
All my videos are clickbait, go watch them all 😉😉😉
@@NicosPhotographyShow I am always lauging at such videos, but I watch them anyways. Just think, how many people are on this planet and how many do photography. What is not for you, it's irrelevant, because there is so many different taste for gear. Yes, you would say, somebody would agree on your decision and many do, but many they would say, MP is perfect for them and some would say, I don't use lightmeter, so why pay so much. Who cares, buy camera you prefer, do photography... with lightmeter or without.
I use a many different film M leica cameras a lot and I enjoy all of them... at the end it doesn't matter what I preffer, I mean for the other people who do photography.
better subject for this video would be, why you love using M2, and not why MP is not for you.
it is just my remark... at the end it probably doesn't matter what I think, right?
have a nice day Nicos :)
$500 in 1957 is $4,600 today
Im old but not so old, my M2 was 500 in 2012 or so. ;)

@@NicosPhotographyShow after you sold it and it brassed up incredibly fast. Somebody went to town on that paint.
Oh, its been yeaaaars in his hands. And its never left his side (probably gone round the globe a few times with Matt). So its real use.
The way I heard the story it seemed it was a few weeks or maybe a month between you selling it and it getting to his hands.
It was 48h between, but the screen shot i shared is a few years after the transaction.
M11 best
You actually care what colour the camera is ??? Just proves that Leicas are fashion accessories to some people.Whats brassing got to do with the final result ? But then again if you are just posting to Instragam that tells me a lot about the photographer
I do care about the color, silver brings more attention when outside. Also the red dot on the front calls for a lot of attention. Also I post on Instagram as well as print in the darkroom. Judging someone is easy, understand someones work not so much. I invite you to check the videos where I should my darkroom work and if you may even meet me in person Im happy to take some boxes of prints. Have a nice day!
