Note: Since the latest patch Vegeta's assist has been considerably nerfed, since it can now be superdashed through or reflected even on block. This greatly reduces it's effectiveness as a lockdown tool, however it's utility as a defensive and combo-extension tool is untouched. It's still easily one of the best assists in the game, just not undisputed god-tier anymore. Something that should have been noted in the long-range section is that Vegeta is one of the few characters who can punish superdash on reaction even when in the air thanks to air crusher knee. If you have the reactions, this allows Vegeta to play as an effective wall in certain matchups by occasionally cherry-picking with aerial ki blasts to cover grounded approaches, all while on the look out for a frustrated opponent trying to superdash in. Ofcourse the aerial ki-blasts can still be superdashed through if you're too predictable, and anyone with a horizontal aerial beam (such as SS Goku or to a lesser degree Gotenk) can stuff Vegeta, but these are relatively rare. A point we want to clarify about using crusher knee in combos. You can use 214M at the end of the universal combo and still super by using 236S+H (diagonal Big Bang). Remember to wait until Vegeta nearly hits the ground. This is the most damaging way to combo into DHC, otherwise use 236M (super dash kick) for a solo combo. If your combo doesn't include a dramatic camera angle 2H-H superdash though, for example a vanish combo, then ex crusher knee is the only way to force a ground slide and from there dash in for oki / combo into DHC supers / untechable grounded level 3. Also when used in the neutral, crusher knee can be made safe with the use of assists. This is one reason why you may want to place Vegeta in 2nd position instead of 3rd. From Paddu regarding divekick on hit: "5M in the corner goes into a full combo". Another tip from Abishek Valsangkar regarding 236H on hit: "It's possible to also follow up with a 2M and skip the vanish for higher damage overall. It has the same range as 236L followup, meaning it won't work with a close range 236H. The timing is quite strict, but you can also do it with a 5M or 5LM which seem easier to land." In the corner this conversion is much easier since it doesn't require a dash, though I don't recommend using 236H here since it's unsafe if Vegeta doesn't have room to fly past the opponent.
I love the fact how much passion and nostalgia there is in those dbf vids. Now when you'll be done with all the characters this will be the ultimate guide to the game both in terms of information and in terms of visual representation. Thank you for dedication guys! Gonna wait for my Nappa and Tien guide :) !
You take so many things into consideration. Truly top notch quality. You mention things others would not bother mentioning because it would take a lot more time. Like delaying vegeta's j.L's after 2M /5M / j.M.
dude these are the best guides I've seen. Take my money and do a Krillin one :). Excellent work. You have the most useful well edited and entertaining character guides on RUclips, and I've seen a lot.
I'd have to run it by Logan first ;) ruclips.net/video/0bGHfhEIrkY/видео.html Also love your channel rooflemonger! Been trying to figure out for ages now the best way to present fundamental concepts like the neutral game in DBFZ, but you've done an excellent job there. Care to collaborate on some videos in the future?
That neutral video was very stressful to make because the whole time I was second guessing everything in "does this make any sense to anyone or just to me". As for collabs I never made any before so wouldn't even know where to begin. Have a particular subject in mind?
Yeah I've tried to write a script on a similar topic several times, but keep revising since DBFZ's just so different from everything else out there. Will drop you an email about some ideas now :)
Well what I do, is nothing is scripted. I know some things I want to talk about ahead of time and its all free-form discussion from there. Consequently there is a lot of "uhh's" sometimes as I gather my thoughts but for the most part people seem to like it.
Holy shit, this is hands down the best character guide I've seen. Aside from the awesome references, the way you guys explain gameplan, techs and aplicable uses to specials is amazing. Keep these coming! (And please do a Bardock one soon? I feel like he has so much potential but I'm damn sure I'm missing a ton of nuances >
honestly it's a pretty smart decision to do trunks next, not only is he a fan favorite he's also one of the hardest characters to play effectively due to his unique pressure approach and mix up options. no matter why you choose him he's the character i've always wanted at least an idea of how to play so this is one i'll look forward to.
Reasons we chose Trunks: 1. He's a good point character, so along with Goku in 2nd and Vegeta in 3rd you have a complete team. 2. To finish the "super saiyan" set. 3. He's one of my personal favourite characters in the series.
This is actually the greatest and most well edited/produced DBFZ video I've seen to date! Excellent job! Can't even express how well this has been done, I hope to see more of these types of videos by you in the future
These tutorials are very well edited for visual learning, and your breakdown of the characters seem to hit home for me in ways others lack. Thanks for these vids and please don't stop, WE WANT NAPPA
These videos are fantastic with everything to information and production value. I'm really glad you guys remembered to focus on EX specials and all their other versions as opposed to the Goku video (no tatsu explanations), keep up the great work!
Cheers! The reason we didn't go into tatsu in so much detail with Goku is that it's use outside of combos is pretty limited. I still haven't found a use for ex tatsu as other combo routes are more optimal.
Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but you do not need to do 214H to super every time. If the combo contained a launcher (2H), like the universal combo, 214M can also cause a sliding knockdown. This can be followed by his big bang attack, though it's best to not wait for Vegeta to land. With R2, you can angle it downwards in mid-air, which is a lot easier to time. You have to be at the right angle, the attack doesn't track, but it's massive and at a good angle so it isn't too hard to hit.
Cheers for this! (do you mean 214M?) We found the diagonal big bang attack to be a bit inconsistent after M crusher knee so we didn't include it in the final script. If you have a tip for landing it consistently would appreciate it!
That Blasted Salami My sincere apologies for that silly typo, I've edited my comment for clarity. I'm not sure how to explain the timing, as I just practiced it until it became muscle memory. I try to super when Vegeta is a double jump away from the ground. A handy way to tell if it's going to connect is if you can see the opponent during the camera shift when Vegeta charges his attack. Or you could just drop to the ground, which you have to do in the corner anyway. Thanks for the wonderful guide, I found a lot of useful information here, especially your mixup tip at 6:25. I also didn't know that you could follow up 236H outside the corner. After I jumped into the lab to test it out, I found that it's possible to also follow up with a 2M and skip the vanish for higher damage overall. It has the same range as 236L followup, meaning it won't work with a close range 236H. The timing is quite strict, but you can also do it with a 5M or 5LM which seem easier to land.
Ah cheers for the clarification there! Yes as part of the universal combo you can 236HS for the best way to go into DHC, otherwise aerial 236M is best for solo damage. In combos without the dramatic camera angle shift from a 2H-H though the ex crusher knee is the only way to force a ground slide. Thanks for the info on 236H! I'll add that to the pinned comment at the top.
That Blasted Salami sparking combo..only need 1 bar to start.. 2M 5M JC.M JC.M 236L Sparking. 2M 5M JC. MLL2H Superdash LML2H JC. LLSSSS 236L Vanish hold LL 214M JUST before you hit the ground Final Flash...7357Dmg and they are grounded...if you start with 2 bars you can use 214H instead of 214M giving you right at 75%..very optimal! way better than that shit you showed...lol tested on smalls
That Blasted Salami also for 0 bar start you get 6907 dmg with 2M 5M JC.M JC.M 236L Sparking 2M 5M JC. MLL2H Superdash LML2H JC. LLSS 236M Final Flash..better than the one you guys showed and not any harder...tested on smalls...cant get them grounded for 0 bar start..:( the only way to build enough bar for the level 3 is to keep them in the air
I just love how Vegeta has such a generic move compared to the rest of the moves in DB, DBZ, DBS, and DBGT (dont care about canon) that it basically becomes his main move. I'm talking about the consecutive energy blasts. Omega2040 would be surprised or something if he comes and reads this then I'll be surprised he noticed me.
It should also be noted, regarding M crushing knee, that it can be made safe on block by calling an appropriate assist right after the move gets blocked (beam assists will do for example). This actually even leaves Vegeta with frame advantage, and in many cases will cover a whiff situation as well. They should really patch this out (for all characters with invincible specials) but whatever...
Thanks for pointing this out. In the summary there is a clip of Vegeta covering Gohan's 236M, but I really should have made it explicit in the close range section.
the vids are really high quality but you need to mention that starting combos with an M always results in more damage than starting with a light like at 13:10
I hope Cell is next! He is like the Sagat of the game and plays like a good mix of both Goku and Vegeta, he would be PERFECT for the 3rd tutorial! And yes, he's my main :D
You didn't mention about j.214M high up in the corner as an ender where you can combo into super after touching the ground. It's really optimal as a corner ender after 2H > H.
I don't think anyone is outright bad in this game, but some are certainly outpaced by the stronger characters. You can still win with everyone though. DBFZ places a lot of emphasis on system fundamentals, so the better player usually wins regardless of character choice.
You don't need to use vanish to combo from Divekick. 5M works in the corner and goes into a full combo and midscreen you can use 236L into possibly a vanish.
I dont understand why this video does'nt have ads on it, youtube is becoming such a shitty platform day after day, this quality content deserves to be monetized.
Magnamarak you can usually you the down special arm stretch after hitting hellzone grenade however I think it only works in the corner. You should really look up someone named hookganggod he has some really good piccolo things
I'm struggling with the sparking blast combo the dash in into 2M,5M into universal series is the part i struggle with, i either dash and i'm not on the floor yet and if i wait until i confirm my position on the ground it's too late and the cpu recovers already any help?

You are absolutely the best! Quality content wether it’s DBFZ or Tekken!
Keep up the great work please ❤️
People might complain about the stale meta but both Goku & Vegeta are incredible well executed characters and faithful to the source material.
You are the most underrated person on youtube, the amount of work you put in is amazing! Keep up the great work!
Agreed!
Man also loving all these old dbz clips the nostalgia is so real
This is actually the greatest and most well edited/produced DBFZ video I've seen to date! Excellent job! Can't even express how well this has been done, I hope to see more of these types of videos by you in the future
Love that you're branching out into dbfz! I was waiting for a vegeta guide after your Goku one, didn't expect it so soon. Keep up the good work
Wow, this is very professionally made! Very helpful, well done
These tutorials are very well edited for visual learning, and your breakdown of the characters seem to hit home for me in ways others lack. Thanks for these vids and please don't stop, WE WANT NAPPA
BADUMDUMDUMDUMDUM *turns Super Saiyan* I CAN FEEL IT COMING IN THE AIR TONIGHT, OH LORD !
Vegeta is clearly a die-hard Phil Collins fan.
Vegeta is one of my three for my mains so this is great. Thanks so much! Great vids and really looking forward to the character overview vid!
Incredible work!

Best guide so far. And I’ve watched a lot! Great job.
I love these 😍 they’re so informative. Please do the rest of the characters!
This is so entertaining, i barely even play and I couldn't stop watching.
thanks for the guide!
I cant believe you have just a few views, omg! As a new comer to the game I feel this videos really useful!! Instant subscriber!
love your guides man. best fighting game channel!

This was really REALLY great and succinct. Please do Frieza next!
nostalgia + godly edits = over 9000
ok ill leave
Much appreciated.
fantastic video, please keep making more!
earned a sub for your in depth analysis :-)
Very informative (subbed)

This video is amazing.
Keep the good work
Great production value
Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of Dragon ball essentials
FYI: The light version of crusher knee does actually combo into super
It should also be noted, regarding M crushing knee, that it can be made safe on block by calling an appropriate assist right after the move gets blocked (beam assists will do for example). This actually even leaves Vegeta with frame advantage, and in many cases will cover a whiff situation as well.

Awesome video 🔝
You guys are Amazing! I had to sub after the Goku breakdown. Great content and edits! Can we pls have a Beerus Sama guide after Trunks??
Thank you! We actually have A16 and some other tournament favourites lined up after Trunks, but we will get to Beerus eventually.
That Blasted Salami Awesome thanks 👍🏽

You didn't mention about j.214M high up in the corner as an ender where you can combo into super after touching the ground. It's really optimal as a corner ender after 2H > H.
Are there any characters that are considered bad? Or would I be able to get by with learning any character. Haven't bought the game yet
I don't think anyone is outright bad in this game, but some are certainly outpaced by the stronger characters. You can still win with everyone though. DBFZ places a lot of emphasis on system fundamentals, so the better player usually wins regardless of character choice.
That's why I like vegeta he reminds me of Ken.
AMAZING
PLEASE MAKE MORE OF THESE!!!!!!!
Please do more of these....fucking excellent watch. Ps.... Do piccolo
You don't need to use vanish to combo from Divekick. 5M works in the corner and goes into a full combo and midscreen you can use 236L into possibly a vanish.
Depending on the angle of the divekick 236L can be very inconsistent. Thank you for the corner tip though!
Can we call you "That Blessed Salami" ?
This is a name I can abide by.
Ur chanel is growing fast are you going to do all charecters in tekken? Im looking forward to miguel my favorite move to joke around 😂 is df2
Absolutely! It may take a while but we are going to cover the entire cast. T7 isn't going anywhere for now.
omae wa mou OWARI DA !!!
Trunks gets shit done.
*Renegade For Life*
Do you plan on doing Super saiyan blue Vegeta anytime
I can’t wait for Frieza!
Well done but a real bummer we've been without tekken content!
A Josie Breakdown came out 2 weeks ago, and we're releasing Raven and possibly Shaheen this month. More Tekken 7 ranked this week too.
“If you want to super after Crusher Knee, you need to do the heavy version.” Totally false.
Where's that Tekken breakdown 🅱? I would love to see Devil Jin be next!
christ it took a 6 month old video for me to learn how to combo in a character switch, man I'm thick.
dude i love this if i love t hat i mhurry to see the other character
I dont understand why this video does'nt have ads on it, youtube is becoming such a shitty platform day after day, this quality content deserves to be monetized.
Shine on
please make one for Piccolo, i cant figure out when or how i should be using his special ( stretch arm and demon shocker)
Magnamarak you can usually you the down special arm stretch after hitting hellzone grenade however I think it only works in the corner. You should really look up someone named hookganggod he has some really good piccolo things
Smartix thanks!
When’s the next episode coming out?
Release schedule has just been posted. Character overviews for the entire cast are coming at the end of this month, with Trunks Essentials in July.
KUSOTARE GA!!!
*KAKOROTOOOOOOOO*
all hail the prince JIREN NI KATTE MISERO!!!
I'm struggling with the sparking blast combo the dash in into 2M,5M into universal series is the part i struggle with, i either dash and i'm not on the floor yet and if i wait until i confirm my position on the ground it's too late and the cpu recovers already any help?
It's quite tricky since the camera is still focusing on the opponent, so you can't see Vegeta. Dash into 5M (omitting the 2M) or even 5L to make the timing easier.
That Blasted Salami will try it for sure love the video series please continue to do more.
Can crusher knee beat armour
william teahno yea. it even beats short supers. its quite literally "invincible" but longer ones will catch him
When will you guys get to the blues? Vegeta and Goku SSJBlue
Make these faster! The game will die before you make every character!
this game looks so weird as a person who only plays tekken as their fighting game
they had to nerf his assist :(
It's still easily top 5, just not undisputed best anymore.
ruclips.net/video/l3Ne2m-l0RE/видео.htmlm1s
This is actually not true. You can always deflect between the end of the barrage and the vanish attack (I think what allows this is that the last projectile of the barrage is treated like a regular ki blast for all purposes).
Reflect is active on the first frame so as long as there's at least 1 frame gap, you can use it and reflect the vanish but any other options will not come out, that's basically what he was trying to explain.
Where’s Trunks
Trunks has received some important buffs in the latest patch, especially to his assist and zoning with 5S. Trunks Essentials will be coming in September after Part 2 of Overviews due at the end of this month.
Your intros too long. Pretty cool though.
Loyal? lol
As far as Saiyans go, yeah definitely.
