Piotr Dmochowski taking bites is worth it when you have to take the max HP hit. When it's free with the blood vile, it shouldn't even give you the choice the walk away.

Kinda falls flat without the Strikes to keep Perfected Strike dealing damage, no?

I don't think he's ever actually done that event, so he presumably has no way of knowing what the Bites actually do. It's not well explained by the dialog.
I'll give you the perfected strike scenario, if you do build a deck around 1 or a few of those early, it might be worth potentially avoiding, although id still argue that the bites are usually more useful than a big perfected strike.
NL, you should really stop skipping the Vampire event, it's one of the best events in the game. It replaces all your strikes with bites which not only deal more damage but also heal you. It's often sketchy to do because the Max HP loss leaves you pretty vulnerable to the endgame bosses if you don't get Feed or something. But trading 2 healing per combat for 5 upgraded strikes that _each_ heal you for 2? You really, really don't want to skip that.

It's not like he'd have major bloating (for example dropping one strike for five bites). Don't forget they heal 3 when upgraded. Combined with Enflame and two Reapers... and those Armaments+ it's not like he needs to block much at all at that point. This was such a wonrun that got egged because he's bad.
I've skipped the event, just never with Blood Vial. The only reason I can even think of is if you're already knee deep in PStrike, and you can't lose all that damage. Even then it might be worth it, especially when you're holding two Reapers.

Taking that second reaper over Offering hurt you a lot in the long run. Offering is two energy, card draw, and exhausts so it triggers Dead Branch. Missing out on the vampire event when you have the blood vial is criminal.
Welp, that's it folks, NL has drank his own koolaid and truly believes he is making the right choices even as he takes 50+ unneeded damage in some fights. Sure buddy, you're playing much faster than you used to, that just means you're dying quicker with your plays.

NL, upgraded Evolve is amazing, it draws two cards for every wound. It's a key component of many discard/exhaust (like yours) synergies. If you had Blue Candle for example...
Adiga Maximus like many cards it can be situationally useful but most things get better with strength and how he uses it in this video is for the most part worse than just defending would be. I don’t think it’s trash, just not endlessly useful.
Adiga Maximus i just feel like it’s not going to help you win the game. Sure it works amazing on the five grubs, but when you get to a boss like time eater then heal for 4 I don’t think its done its job. There are better cards that can help the climbing process and help out with the final boss fight without the steep 2 energy cost.
Pongze Lor one time I got 50 strength and my reaper did something like 60 damage. That saved me from the time eater who would’ve killed me. Yes it is situational but most rare cards are. You can’t expect a barricade to work on a strength build or limit break to work on a defence build. That’s all rare cards in a nutshell. They’re very powerful cards IF used in the correct deck.

Evolve is great when its upgraded and you also have some wild strikes and push it throughs, and then either soul reaper or fiend fire to keep the number of wounds in check.
I will say I had not thought of the corruption+dead branch synergy, think that might be one you need to see to be inherently obvious. So biggest misplay to me is him not taking the vampire event with blood vile
Blood Vial was terrible sure, but you're saying you didn't think of the synergy between "random card when a card is exhausted" and "all skills cost zero but are exhausted?" I mean, I'm not saying you're worse than NL, but that's pretty dang obvious, and not actually needed to be visual, it's right there in black and white mate. = )
Egg, please. If you're going to take Reaper, for the love of god you need Strength cards to back it up. Do not double down on a second Reaper when you don't have that second part.
Choosing to take more damage because you cannot block all damage is losing you games. 1 player HP is worth more than many more monster HP, as over 3 floors they have far more than you start with and can heal.
Hey man, nice to see your progress! I'm gonna get onboard the "dead branch/corruption" train and just try to explain it. tl;dr corruption + dead branch = lots of fun and actually OP. So corruption is generally scary cause you might run out of skills and end up with attacks only. But when you have dead branch, every exausted skill is replaced with another random card. First, the game get real fun with this combo because of all the random shit you get. Second, it's actually pretty safe because like half of the random cards you get will be defence-oriented skills anyway (plus they'll cost 0 too).
Ok, so NL's a smart enough guy. I do have one question, however. Whyyyy is Reaper (that only heals for UNBLOCKED damage) so much better to him than a Bite for half the cost that heals ALL the time???
if your on the first floor, its better to go for fights, so you can get your deck built early. this lets you focus less on battles on floor 2 and 3 and more on the ? events there, where the interactions are more worthwhile.
Right, I helped develop that meta my friend. However, it's better to head to them over shops and elites, not over "?" rooms. The point is also so that you can pass on cards, not so you can pass on Clothesline and take literally every other card option. The idea is that you take 2-4 _great_ cards... which you whittle down from all your card choices, and upgrade them all (or in NL's case, remove more cards with Peace Pipe). The idea is not to skip "?" rooms, it's to dodge elites.
I feel like it might be better to think game changing events like the vampire thing though thoroughly. Blood vial is 2 hp per fight, the bites are 2hp each and deal more damage than the strikes even
My main tip would be to slow down, but I've got people telling me to hurry up. Even after I just beat my first attempt at ascension mode, people were telling me to speed up. Even when my HP was down to 2 in one fight and 4 in another fight, people were telling me to speed up. Even when I was also trying out the beta branch at the same time and fighting new enemies for the first time, people were telling me to speed up. I'm sorry, I'm just a little bitter.
michaelalfox tbh people are too needy with content consumption. Every person who ive seen play this game has people telling them to play faster. Even though its a card game so strategy is needed. I dont understand people sometimes.
As a world record holder (week two) and a person who (I'd like to think) could actually play better than NL with the monitor off, I don't even complain about anyone playing too _slow_ . Too _fast_ sure, all the time. I cannot remember telling a person to speed up. Again, world record holder, and hundreds of times better than NL. That's just not how the game works. MALF, may I suggest you tell those people that they're just bad?

Mate, slowplaying and playing slowly... neither is frowned upon, only chat goes crazy from that. Also I subbed BTW... woulda done it a long time ago, but you had an uploading drought. = ) Ironclad I'd say +str _will_ win you every game, although you won't always get it. Keep your deck _extra_ thin, and worry about defending yourself. Take any healing opportunities you have, Vampirism, 2x bandages+, Reaper is a thing... you use your HP as a resource (and can build it each fight) that way. Also remember, defending is not embarrassing. = ) As for the Silent, I find high draw + high energy to be the most consistent. Sure, poison and Shivs are nice, but everyone forgets that with Footwork+ a defend goes a long way, and if you can defend (x2) for 20+ per round, and then hit (even with a strike or two) you're taking down what you're going after. The Silent is the queen of energy and card draw. Make that work for you and build your synergies around that. NEVER (well, until you know what's up anyway) remove Defends first. Always strikes. The Silent is somewhat lacking in variety for defensive cards. With the Silent, weakness is huge, so remember to upgrade Neutralize early, and take Sucker Punch, etc... Keep your deck sleek and upgrade cards. Campfires are NOT for healing. = D Generally speaking, try hitting fights more than "?" on the first floor. Don't take all the cards, only consider the blue borders or better, or other _really_ good cards. Build your deck early, then on the second floor take all your gold and your pretty decent deck, and hit Campfires, Shops, Elites in that order. = ) That should help my friend, but remember relics and potions are wonderful, but your deck is your actual ability. You could easily win the game with a great deck and no relics. With a crap deck and great relics (as NL has proven) you'll lose SUPER often. = D Hope it helps mate. P.S. After a while you'll be able to tell after the first or second card select screen what the game "wants" you to do. Play a whole bunch off camera (even if you record or stream it... ignore chat) just to get a feel for the game, think out your moves, play carefully and deliberately and make sure you're 0/3 energy at the end of your turn. = )

evolve is really good for like say fiend fire. also evolve+ is just extra draw, so it’s actually a pretty good power especially with those cards that put wounds in your deck
He'll never buy into Evolve+... it's too much like a thinking man's move for him to make naturally. Pandora's box or a transformation are our only hope for seeing that again.
He takes combust, has the Blood Vial (which is mostly a garbage relic imo) and still refuses the bites... I just don't understand... How can someone not notice such an obvious synergy? I like NL a lot, but this is really painful to watch sometimes.

A good strategy against the goblin leader elite is to not kill the shield goblins since they don't do any damage, let the boss stack 3 shield goblins and the damage will be pretty low
So this time I won't go on what I think NL did well or not and how to improve but I will give him my thought about a particular point that he may have not considered. So, it is about dexterity and strenght cards. I feel that NL do not value them enough. So here goes the thought. When you have a card that permanently increases your strenght or dexterity it is a direct upgrade for all your attacks or defences respectively. That means that it is a way to upgrade about 3/4 of your deck. When you compare it with one of your fav cards, Armaments +, then it "only" upgrades your hand and you had to previously upgrade it. So when picking a card between an Inflame or an Armaments, which one is more valuable? This is a bit of a lie because Armaments + will upgrade skills and powers while a card like Inflame improves all attacks in your deck although not other cards (so Armaments + still has a point). The same can be said for debuffs, they are directly improving your attack or defence cards but the difference is that they fade out and usually do not stack while a card like Inflsme is a reusable incremental upgrade making your attacks more and more upgraded. Also, that said, you still want to msntain a balance, for which you don't want to overflow your deck with strenght upgrades/debuffs or defence upgrades/debuffs. In fact a strenght upgrade and a defence debuff (frail) are redundant as well as it is a defence upgrade and an offence debuff (weaken). Another point that I woul like to bring attention to and that it is related to having a balance deck is the fact that some times you tend to overflow your deck with redundant cards or several copies of the same card. Even with synergies this is a bad call in my opinion, so I would suggest you to put yourself a card limit of two copies max of a card in a deck. Since in any case since you reshufle the deck constantly you already will have a good chance to play any card multiple times, you don't need 4 copies of the same card. And look out for redundancies, if you have a card that give you card draw, you don't need 5 cards with similar effects, not because card draw is not appealing but because then you will be skipping on other cards with other useful card effects so you are breaking the balance of your deck. I understand your way to build your decks but that is because you are not used to the reshufling mechanic, although you are aware of it for car draw with cards like headbut but at the same time you are following your instinct of permament discard when deck building. And about redundance breking your deck balance, I feel that there is were card removal becomes more important. Because when you get to add a card which is a direct upgrade of one of your previous cards you want to remove the reiterative card that is not as good to keep the deck balance. So it is a tool to polish your deck not as much as keeping your deck small. Balance imo is here more important than the number of cards. I hope my thoughs help NL if he reads them. I am enjoying the vids and watch your improvement. Good luck and have fun!
Will admit, Got the game last night, played for 7 hours, and all of my runs were more focused on fat decks. Made it to three quarters of the third area before I got rekt.
It's straight up OK... that's about it. I'd have passed on it as well. I was actually afraid he _was_ gonna pick it up. Turns out he found plenty of other ways to ruin the run.
I usually always take a card that is better than the average draw of my *current* deck...sure you end up with a maybe 40 card deck in the end but , and don't want to brag ;), I usually win -> I feel like this whole 'keeping the deck thin' thing comes for other card games but doens't translate so well for Slay the Spire

Man, could everybody that's constantly pissed because he made some choice he doesn't even understand just chill the fuck out? He hasn't even experienced all the content in the game. The only reason anybody else here can complain about it is because this is a a game in which you can experience all of its cards and events in a day or two of play. When NL first started playing Isaac he fucked everything up and nobody complained, because they were all unaware of how the game worked too. Just because you know things he doesn't, you shouldn't be cursing in the comment section like your goddamn life depends on him winning the game.

If... _IF_ he hasn't experienced all the content, it's because he simply has chosen not to, not because he's "new." Slay the Spires card shuffling sucks some times, like at the beggining of some of egg's runs he has turns with all strikes and others with all defends forcing him to take damage before he gets the opportunity to pick up any cards that can prevent this

poor plays this time NL, so here's my compliment sandwich for you and it's double decker this time: good: taking the relic for a curse was a good move, easily the best of your options. bad: not taking vampirism when you had blood vial (causes you to not have to sacrifice max hp). good: proper use of havoc for dead branch synergy. bad: you kind of floundered with the deck you were trying to build. First floor is meant to find your footing. good: proper use of potions to mitigate unnecessary damage.

You're forgetting the cost of adding cards to your deck, if you've been playing correctly and removing Strikes up to that point.

Pongze Lor one time I got 50 strength and my reaper did something like 60 damage. That saved me from the time eater who would’ve killed me. Yes it is situational but most rare cards are. You can’t expect a barricade to work on a strength build or limit break to work on a defence build. That’s all rare cards in a nutshell. They’re very powerful cards IF used in the correct deck.
Skipping the vampirism was just objectively wrong. Trading 2 hp at the start of every fight for multiple 2 hp heals that can be played multiple times.

Evolve is great when its upgraded and you also have some wild strikes and push it throughs, and then either soul reaper or fiend fire to keep the number of wounds in check.

I will say I had not thought of the corruption+dead branch synergy, think that might be one you need to see to be inherently obvious. So biggest misplay to me is him not taking the vampire event with blood vile
Blood Vial was terrible sure, but you're saying you didn't think of the synergy between "random card when a card is exhausted" and "all skills cost zero but are exhausted?"
I mean, I'm not saying you're worse than NL, but that's pretty dang obvious, and not actually needed to be visual, it's right there in black and white mate. = )
Egg, please. If you're going to take Reaper, for the love of god you need Strength cards to back it up. Do not double down on a second Reaper when you don't have that second part.

Choosing to take more damage because you cannot block all damage is losing you games. 1 player HP is worth more than many more monster HP, as over 3 floors they have far more than you start with and can heal.

I'm gonna get onboard the "dead branch/corruption" train and just try to explain it.
tl;dr corruption + dead branch = lots of fun and actually OP.
So corruption is generally scary cause you might run out of skills and end up with attacks only. But when you have dead branch, every exausted skill is replaced with another random card.
First, the game get real fun with this combo because of all the random shit you get.
Second, it's actually pretty safe because like half of the random cards you get will be defence-oriented skills anyway (plus they'll cost 0 too).
Might be personal choice but i find focusing the Knight when you get the Knight and Healer combat way easier.
You're totally right, people go for the healer though because it's intuitive.

if your on the first floor, its better to go for fights, so you can get your deck built early. this lets you focus less on battles on floor 2 and 3 and more on the ? events there, where the interactions are more worthwhile.
Right, I helped develop that meta my friend. However, it's better to head to them over shops and elites, not over "?" rooms.
The point is also so that you can pass on cards, not so you can pass on Clothesline and take literally every other card option.
The idea is that you take 2-4 _great_ cards... which you whittle down from all your card choices, and upgrade them all (or in NL's case, remove more cards with Peace Pipe). The idea is not to skip "?" rooms, it's to dodge elites.

My main tip would be to slow down, but I've got people telling me to hurry up.
Even after I just beat my first attempt at ascension mode, people were telling me to speed up. Even when my HP was down to 2 in one fight and 4 in another fight, people were telling me to speed up. Even when I was also trying out the beta branch at the same time and fighting new enemies for the first time, people were telling me to speed up.

michaelalfox tbh people are too needy with content consumption. Every person who ive seen play this game has people telling them to play faster. Even though its a card game so strategy is needed. I dont understand people sometimes.

Too _fast_ sure, all the time. I cannot remember telling a person to speed up. Again, world record holder, and hundreds of times better than NL.

Hahaha, well coming from me that might now work. Even if they are bad, I'm sure they could put me to shame. I just need more time in the game and I'll naturally become quicker. Though, it does comfort me to hear from someone as good as you are that going slow isn't frowned on.

Mate, slowplaying and playing slowly... neither is frowned upon, only chat goes crazy from that. Also I subbed BTW... woulda done it a long time ago, but you had an uploading drought. = )
Ironclad I'd say +str _will_ win you every game, although you won't always get it. Keep your deck _extra_ thin, and worry about defending yourself. Take any healing opportunities you have, Vampirism, 2x bandages+, Reaper is a thing... you use your HP as a resource (and can build it each fight) that way. Also remember, defending is not embarrassing. = )
As for the Silent, I find high draw + high energy to be the most consistent. Sure, poison and Shivs are nice, but everyone forgets that with Footwork+ a defend goes a long way, and if you can defend (x2) for 20+ per round, and then hit (even with a strike or two) you're taking down what you're going after. The Silent is the queen of energy and card draw. Make that work for you and build your synergies around that. NEVER (well, until you know what's up anyway) remove Defends first. Always strikes. The Silent is somewhat lacking in variety for defensive cards.
With the Silent, weakness is huge, so remember to upgrade Neutralize early, and take Sucker Punch, etc... Keep your deck sleek and upgrade cards. Campfires are NOT for healing. = D
Generally speaking, try hitting fights more than "?" on the first floor. Don't take all the cards, only consider the blue borders or better, or other _really_ good cards. Build your deck early, then on the second floor take all your gold and your pretty decent deck, and hit Campfires, Shops, Elites in that order. = )
That should help my friend, but remember relics and potions are wonderful, but your deck is your actual ability. You could easily win the game with a great deck and no relics.
With a crap deck and great relics (as NL has proven) you'll lose SUPER often. = D

P.S. After a while you'll be able to tell after the first or second card select screen what the game "wants" you to do.
Play a whole bunch off camera (even if you record or stream it... ignore chat) just to get a feel for the game, think out your moves, play carefully and deliberately and make sure you're 0/3 energy at the end of your turn. = )
NL. You don't need to stack your deck so much. You can win every combat turn 1 with 5 cards or less in your deck.
You know what I think the problem is? NL is a very smart man but he's not really a creative person, and that hinders him in a deck building game.
He only looks at the paths he can take, instead of also looking at the paths he can make.

evolve is really good for like say fiend fire. also evolve+ is just extra draw, so it’s actually a pretty good power especially with those cards that put wounds in your deck

A good strategy against the goblin leader elite is to not kill the shield goblins since they don't do any damage, let the boss stack 3 shield goblins and the damage will be pretty low

So this time I won't go on what I think NL did well or not and how to improve but I will give him my thought about a particular point that he may have not considered.
So, it is about dexterity and strenght cards. I feel that NL do not value them enough. So here goes the thought.
When you have a card that permanently increases your strenght or dexterity it is a direct upgrade for all your attacks or defences respectively. That means that it is a way to upgrade about 3/4 of your deck. When you compare it with one of your fav cards, Armaments +, then it "only" upgrades your hand and you had to previously upgrade it. So when picking a card between an Inflame or an Armaments, which one is more valuable?
This is a bit of a lie because Armaments + will upgrade skills and powers while a card like Inflame improves all attacks in your deck although not other cards (so Armaments + still has a point).
The same can be said for debuffs, they are directly improving your attack or defence cards but the difference is that they fade out and usually do not stack while a card like Inflsme is a reusable incremental upgrade making your attacks more and more upgraded.
Also, that said, you still want to msntain a balance, for which you don't want to overflow your deck with strenght upgrades/debuffs or defence upgrades/debuffs. In fact a strenght upgrade and a defence debuff (frail) are redundant as well as it is a defence upgrade and an offence debuff (weaken).
Another point that I woul like to bring attention to and that it is related to having a balance deck is the fact that some times you tend to overflow your deck with redundant cards or several copies of the same card. Even with synergies this is a bad call in my opinion, so I would suggest you to put yourself a card limit of two copies max of a card in a deck. Since in any case since you reshufle the deck constantly you already will have a good chance to play any card multiple times, you don't need 4 copies of the same card. And look out for redundancies, if you have a card that give you card draw, you don't need 5 cards with similar effects, not because card draw is not appealing but because then you will be skipping on other cards with other useful card effects so you are breaking the balance of your deck. I understand your way to build your decks but that is because you are not used to the reshufling mechanic, although you are aware of it for car draw with cards like headbut but at the same time you are following your instinct of permament discard when deck building.
And about redundance breking your deck balance, I feel that there is were card removal becomes more important. Because when you get to add a card which is a direct upgrade of one of your previous cards you want to remove the reiterative card that is not as good to keep the deck balance. So it is a tool to polish your deck not as much as keeping your deck small. Balance imo is here more important than the number of cards.

Will admit, Got the game last night, played for 7 hours, and all of my runs were more focused on fat decks. Made it to three quarters of the third area before I got rekt.
Conversely, I won my second and third runs by keeping a thin deck.

I usually always take a card that is better than the average draw of my *current* deck...sure you end up with a maybe 40 card deck in the end but , and don't want to brag ;), I usually win

Why on earth would you pass up Vampirism. There is actually zero reason you should have refused it when you have Blood Vial. Lose 2 heal per combat, or have guaranteed like 4-5 bites that heal you for 2 AND do more damage than strikes. Like...wtf

Man, could everybody that's constantly pissed because he made some choice he doesn't even understand just chill the fuck out? He hasn't even experienced all the content in the game. The only reason anybody else here can complain about it is because this is a a game in which you can experience all of its cards and events in a day or two of play. When NL first started playing Isaac he fucked everything up and nobody complained, because they were all unaware of how the game worked too. Just because you know things he doesn't, you shouldn't be cursing in the comment section like your goddamn life depends on him winning the game.

Slay the Spires card shuffling sucks some times, like at the beggining of some of egg's runs he has turns with all strikes and others with all defends forcing him to take damage before he gets the opportunity to pick up any cards that can prevent this

good: taking the relic for a curse was a good move, easily the best of your options.
bad: not taking vampirism when you had blood vial (causes you to not have to sacrifice max hp).
good: proper use of havoc for dead branch synergy.
bad: you kind of floundered with the deck you were trying to build. First floor is meant to find your footing.
good: proper use of potions to mitigate unnecessary damage.
