Maria's evolution on clay from her days as a junior through to her eventual crowning as a two time French Open champion is so amazing. She was once so awkward and inconsistent on the surface, but over time and effort she learned how to play her game on it. Now she is a force on clay, and that is a testament to her strength, will, and determination.

+multiplemike Actually her playing style is most suited to clay, so it's not that surprising at all. She is an aggressive baseline player, just like Soderling, Gulbis and Wawrinka. They all prefer clay.
I would say her style is suited to clay these days, but it was not in her teen years. From 2001-2006, Maria had a much better serve than nowadays, and her footwork wasn't as suited for the slow clay. It took her until 2008 to finally win a clay title for the first time (the 18th of her career at the time). So I agree that it suits her now, but not initially.

Over time and particularly during the period when she was doping. Yes, it was amazing. SO amazing it was due to doping.
Whether you like it or not, she was a great champion and brought a lot of publicity to the game. The substance she was taking was legal throughout her career until 2016, so you can't say she won her titles because of that.
