It's also my first animatic, yay!
As a lover of greek mythology and musicals, Jorge Rivera-Herrans dropped the most Epic (heh) song for me to animate to. I can't wait to work on their other songs!

The intensity of Odysseus talking to the Lotus Eaters was so well done- I was cracking up!
Odysseus: "Oh no, plant people who are less than half my size! I have an iron sword, but they have hundreds of sharp sticks, I must take caution....I'm not traumatized from the war at all, I'm fiiiinnneeee...."
Polites: "omg they have flowers on their heads! I trust these plant people with my life!"
Even though it's not finished, I think this animatic is the closest animatic I've seen to what I imagine an Epic the Musical animated show looking like. You made the contrast between Polites so full of life and Odysseus so ruthless perfect. This is one of my least favourite songs from the musical too and yet it's such a perfect animatic 🧡
I know that there are so many factors I need to work on in my animatics, I wanted to challenge myself with visuals for moving the song forward. I wanted to show Polites's kindness as the core of who he is, and how his actions lead to Odysseus being less ruthless, (even when he needs that ruthlessness the most.) I also wanted the environment to mirror the way that they each view the world after the war. I'm glad that so many people like it 😁
@@RoseThorns3000 My favourite part about it is when you have him interacting with nature such as Polites jumping over the rocks and how he plays with the water, it's so pretty and emulates how Polites views the world. Whereas Odysseus straight up grabs the flower from Polites hand and never lets down his guard. It's so good!! 👏

The choreography in this fantastic! A lot of animatic creators don't understand that the trick is to keep the characters moving/ have their energy match that of the song (which is understandable, the work is very overwhelming and most RUclips animatics are just fun passion projects) but you got this down. Great work, even unfinished🎉
I have noticed that with a lot of animatics, that there actually isn’t a whole lot of movement or camera play. To be fair, that is a lot of work to think about, and for the sake of time and energy I understand 100%, but I wanted to use this as an application, so I was making a lot of revisions to make sure I didn’t slip and that the movement was consistent. Was not expecting this many views! So thankful for the engagements on this video!
This is the first time I see Polites without glasses, I mean it makes a lot of sense but it's still weird to me xD

Yeah! IDK, I just never envisioned him with glasses, and in the back of my mind I was like "did they have glasses in ancient Greece???" . But I bet he didn’t notice the skulls in the lake BECAUSE he needs glasses 😂
edit: Ok, while glasses have been around since at least 1290, I can't find a reliable source saying the ancient greeks did in fact have glasses, but it’s likely that they had reading stones! 🤓
I think it because his va wears glasses, so it stuck for the character design people do. But I like you designs for the characters 😮❤!
@@anansajohnson9139 Ooh yeah! That makes sense. I figured it was because someone drew Polites with glasses once and everyone agreed "yup, that's his universal design". No shade, I just never envisioned him with glasses when I first heard his voice. Though I like the head scarf idea from one of WolfyTheWich's animatics, but I didn’t want to copy someone else’s design too much. But we can all agree that Odysseus is a scruffy sassy tired dad 😂

This is already so good. I love all the movement and the cute designs of the Winions and also the way Odysseus freakin' leans forward with this whole Face when he says, "Huh??" xD
This looks like it should belong on a Disney level story board.

I'm so excited to see the whole thing with the ending! I will admit that this animatic has so far matched exactly what I would expect to see if Jorge ever pivoted and decided to turn this musical into an animated movie/series instead! Great work and I can't wait to see more! 😁

I love that you made them seem slightly more human and well-not just a cluster xD, it lends itself closer to mythology and helps to show Odysseus in a darker light

This is GORGEOUS. Ahhhh I LOVE your take on Polites. He gives such golden retriever energy to Odysseus' black cat energy. You even made him protective of Polites and it's super cute! The skulls at the end were CRUCIAL imo. People don't seem to understand how bad the lotus really was. People forgot who they were and just stayed there....forever...Your skulls helps drive home that it's not something to be taken lightly (even though the song kinda does)! Will you do the other songs? I would love to see your interpretation of the others!
FUN FACT!! So I was curious as to why ancient greeks though eating a lotus was harmful. Now I didn’t go into the mythology aspect , but the science aspect said that many lotus's hold a chemical called Nupharin, and what that does to the human body if ingested or inserted somehow, is cause the cells in your body to self destruct! If more research went into this, it could potentially be used to fight cancer, but there isn’t a whole lot of information from experiments to see if that’s more than a hypothesis. Greeks probably realized this and made stories around the scientific basis which is interesting! Once again, thank you for your knowledge and art!

It had been some time since the first version so I had a thought some hopefully encouragement is in order if we want to see this wonder in it’s full glory! ;-)
As many said befor me your animatic is incredible! As soon as it’s finished it will become the best one of this song (at least for me). Your design of Politis without glasses is so much better (it for some reason always breaks my suspension of disbelief since it’s so not greek! Even modern front line soldiers would never have glasses! Especially not in a professional army.) he also isn’t scrawny and yet is so light and cuddly as a person and your Ody is dark (literally darker in colours) and tired and scruffy… he LOOKS like a veteran commander with a PTSD and that’s both rear and great! And the dangerous aura when he believes, they are surrounded by enemies, fire in his eyes… he does his best not to succumb to that darkness but we can literally see the struggle! The lotos eaters are more humanoid but still very much foreign and this is such a good take on them! (If they were talking animals, why would anyone be surprised they did not want to eat ship later on, instead of assuming the specious was a herbivores?). As for movement and storyboard… oh where to even start! It’s so dynamic, and thought out! I love little details like the leaves Politis lands on being heart shaped, the fireflies leading the way, the terrain being uneven and Politis showing his friend the light by helping and securing not by being dumb (throwing Odys sword away in foreign, hostile place or pushing him into the water… like… I would get annoyed and angry instead of adapting his philosophy if that was the case!) but he is also true to form: naive, trusting and literally dancing around like a dig puppy o disney princess as someone put it, and that fits so, so much! It’s perfect! I look forward to a finished version so much! A little suggestion or more like a wish… when they see the water, the flowers could grow from the cracks in the sculls since that’s how they are on leaving lotus eaters as well… that would both be more consistent and more horrifying… also if you were only worried about not stealing the design from others, than I don’t think you need to worry, and can give the head band to Politis. In many of out minds it is important attribute, since later on Odysseus puts it on himself as a visual cue his mindset shifts, and a sentimental reminder of his friend. Weather you do it however, is entirely up to you, and your stylistic choice. Good luck!😊

Life has been a lot lately, and it’s only going to be even more hectic this year, so my EPIC works will dwindle a bit but I’m trying to push myself to get the ending sorted. Thank you very much. I am sorry about the radio silence, but I’m finally in a period of time where I can actually work on this. Watching it now I realize that there is a lot going on, and some things can be cut out, or reframed. I plan to simply get the last part of the song done, and then totally redoing it with the other songs. I’ll update with everything that I’ve been working on, So stay tuned!

OK I gotta put my comment here because the short about Odysseus not being able to read a map made my autism brain go feral and I can't comment there:
Are you really gonna tell me that you took 10 full years to travel 565 nautical miles? I am infuriated. With my current past time of learning celestial navigation (autism) that calls a few questions to mind. **type type type** OK ancient greek warships were called Trireme Ugglans (thank you wikapedia) and they averaged around 6-8 knots (nautical miles/hour) when the men were rowing and not including wind. Consider the two massive sails with a kind puff from Aeolus we're talking maintaining hull speed all night long. Sailors don't just sail when the sun is out and shining, no no no, we take little naps and do shift work so we can move all 24 hours, not like Poseidon's getting Z's anyway. So if we take the lowball estimate of 4 knots for 24 hours we're talking 96 NAUTICAL MILES A DAY. THE CREW IS HOME BATHING IN OIL BY THE END OF THE WEEK! One single puff of wind and we're there in like 4 days.
"But the storm that knocked them off course right away!," I hear you *exclaim* , "that's why they ended up in Lotophagi." Ah, with this I agree fellow autism child, but I must correct you for my bones are a-rattlin'. In 10 days, they traveled somewhere around 1700 n.m. (nautical miles) because of the storm winds and currents (which were not in the stereotypical northwesterly direction but alas). So we admit that these boats can practically swallow the miles out from under them but just never in the right direction. ok. i'll bite. RIDDLE ME PISS BATMAN: W h y did you go in the WRONG DIRECTION *after* leaving the Polyphemus' cave? Didn't even try to catch the westerlys? "They needed food and supplies and didn't wanna stray to far in the sea." Do-do you hear that? It's this grating whining or something. No no no, instead they *had* to go check out the island in the sky, they couldn't possibly have just turned in the right direction and followed the winds that normally blow in the right direction towards Ithaca.
Regardless of the questionable course setting, this SHOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN 10 YEARS. Was one spent with Circe and quite a few with Calypso, yeah, but even then this is an easily achievable route in less than a year, honestly like 3 months or less with good wind. I am just fuming. This only tackles the Odyssey version and not EPIC, but (I was gonna say I couldn't be bothered but that seems hypocritical so I'm cutting this sentence short). I'm gonna go do something slightly more productive, but not by much. Have a wonderful evening and piss on.
Also, I got carried away, but I love the art style too and this video is actually breathtaking so, that also. :D

P.s. i watched your youtube short on odisseus not knowing where the fuck he's headed and it reminded me of the maps u would see on my middle school's books and you forgot that to get to the underworld they had to go past "hercule's columns" which is strait if girbratar (or how tf u spell it) which is at the southesp part of spain, the one that's closest to africa. So yeah the trip home was *even* longer than what you thought lol
