They sure don't make actors like they used to (compared to Clark Gable, there are so few men who measure up that much today). He is the reason why I watched Gone with the Wind. Although GWTW has its many problems, the scenes with Hattie McDaniel and Clark Gable are the best because you can really seen the mutual respect they have for eachother. Although Clark Gable made morally questionable decisions, i like to think people can change over time. I read that when Loretta Young’s daughter was about 15, he did come to her home and met her. But they didnt say anything about him being her father. Times were very different back then.

    🔥 I’ve read several accounts of Clark Gable’s life. It’s been written that he was a clean freak & had a special portable shower, he could utilize wherever he was, sometimes showering up to four times a day! We’ve all heard the rumors of his bad breath. I find this a bit difficult to believe that someone who was so clean on his person & who had numerous affairs, would neglect his oral hygiene to the point of odiferous breath. Considering the time in which he lived, it would make more sense to consider the possibility that perhaps the denture adhesive he used was foul smelling, not his actual breath.

    • @BluePea88
      @BluePea88 Год назад +4

      I was thinking the same as you. It seems incongruous that someone so intent to stay clean would neglect their oral hygiene. I was wondering if he maybe had an oral infection or something.

    • @LucretziaB
      @LucretziaB Год назад +6

      @@BluePea88 An oral infection is definitely a possibility, but wouldn't it have to be ongoing for him to be labeled as having bad breath? If it was ongoing, eventually, wouldn't it have caused other health issues? He was the King of Hollywood, so the rumor could have been started by someone who envied him & wanted to be cruel without damaging his career. Truely, I don't understand it. We're told that he & Joan Crawford had an affair for years & she too, was supposed to be a fanatic about cleanliness. If his breath was bad, after taking one herself, so as not to offend him, wouldn't she have offered him a breath mint? It just doesn't make sense to me.

      It could perhaps be just something he ate, or perhaps if he was fasting.
      It dosen't mean he permanently suffered from it. And (like you) I very much doubt that he did, Especially since non of all his women seemed be bothered.

    Clark Gable was that type that hated the world he lived in. So he let those who didn't look deeper, those who stayed on the surface he let them FEEL IT. When wealthy people only saw his good looks and not his depth he handled them like they handled him. Like a tool. They used him for his looks n bragging rights. He used them for money and connections. The parts of the world he did hold dear, he did respect he also let them FEEL IT hence fighting for fairness and rights. He loved Hattie McDaniels. He loved fairness, respect, and dignity.

    Clark Gable is still the king. And I would say that he is the greatest American actor. He has the body of work, he was in one of the greatest American films, he could do dramatic and he could do comedy. And he was a handsome leading man.
    The AFI has Humphrey Bogart as the greatest American actor but he doesn’t have the range that Clark Gable has. It’s not fair to give Bogart the title just because he was in Maltese falcon and Casablanca. Nothing compares to Clark Gable having to carry the weight of a Rhett Butler in “gone with the wind.” And doing a beautiful light comedy turn in “it happened one night.” -. You know the AFI has it wrong when they give Spencer Tracy the number 2 slot. (Note: I don’t understand the appeal of Spencer Tracy.)

    We tend to _idolize_ people who are _famous_ and put them up on a pedestal, wanting to believe that theyre perfect and can do no wrong ---- and when the veil of their perfect veneer exterior is lifted, and we come to know the details of their personal lives, we are disappointed, because we come to realise that they are very _imperfect and flawed_ , just like us.
    Gable was really never my favorite "silver screen actor", and I actually never found him to be as "handsome" as most women did or still do, and the same applies for Clooney ---- but then again, "beauty" is _subjective_ as they say.
    I cant believe he was only 59 when he died, because he looked way past 70. I guess chain smoking + boozing ultimately take their toll. As far as his _personal character_ goes, I believe he was just like everyone else in the Hollywood industry ---- and some were & still are, far worse than he was.
    We can _dislike_ the "person" but love the "actor" ---- for example: I hate *Robert DeNiro* as a _person_ but LOVE him as an actor, and this applies to several others as well.
    In the end ---- nobody's _perfect._ ✌
    RIP Mr. Gable 🌹
