The average home run leaves the bat at around 105 MPH Mike Trout's last left at 111 MPH, there hasn't been a 120 MPH hit in a while Sport Science exaggerates everything
Another thing I notice know is when they show his range they make a square that is 157 square feet and say that's how much ground he can cover, but he can't jump as far as those corners. A more accurate shape would be a semi circle.
Sports science is honestly bullshit. One video they say the pitch takes .45 seconds then this video they say .395 seconds. .395 seconds to home equates to a 105 mph pitch. I think there's only been 2 or 3 of those in MLB history. Also, they say that the ball comes off the bat at 120 mph. According to hittrackeronline and MLB statcast, that has only been done 2 times in the last 3 seasons. They just pull numbers out of their ass, which makes me question all the shit they say that I can't fact check.
The .45 seconds(450 milliseconds) is for a 90 MPH fastball. The .395 seconds(395 milliseconds) is for a 95 mph fastball. Look it up and learn the time and velocity systems before you belittle a great show
Actually there have been balls clocked faster than 120mph off the bats. There have been high school games with balls coming off bats at 120mph but those are also composite bats and there was a big push to make them illegal because of how fast a ball could come off of them.
If you hit a ball 120mph, you just jacked a HR at least 500'. Also, why are the facts on this show so fucking inconsistent? On the LLWS one, the ball reaches the plate in .44 seconds(440 milliseconds) and in this one, it says .395 seconds... This show has very little credibility.
the hardest hit ball (128 mph) was a 4-6-3 double play. They where talking about little league in that episode, and this one is about mlb. And yes this show has no idea what the fuck they are talking about
+Michaeljeferson You need to realize that LLWS (Little League World Series) are young kids and not professional athletes so they don't throw or hit like MLB players.
Mad Painter Yes ik that. the mound is also closer in 12u and lower ball so the time it takes to reach the plate is lower, of course the show is also full of bullshit and pulls numbers out its ass all the time
That's true. They make it sound like your average ball is 120 MPH. In fact, less than 50% of MLB players have even been recorded with an exit velocity above 105 mph, so there may be a small handful of players, (fielder, Donaldson, and Stanton), who can even hit a ball 120 mph. This show uses faulty numbers is all.
Thanks for watching my videos! To answer your question, no, but that's just because I never hit that few. Maybe later in my career I'll hit as few as 44 home runs in one season.
@texasissouthh They are right angles, and since the two basepaths are of equal length, the distance can be solved using 45-45-90 special right triangles (90*square root of 2= 127.28) or the pythagorean theorem, which also gives the answer 127.28
@andros1984 yeah man it's funny that some people perceive it as being a slower pace...I see it as tension and release...especially if it's a really important game like a late season wildcard decider or the last game of the al/nlcs nothing was a better example of that tension and release than when the sox beat oakland in the alds in 03...I was living in boston at the time and everyone was glued to their tvs biting their nails, then after the last pitch was thrown everything exploded
@manifestgtr You're right. Some are bothered by the slower pace of the game, but they likely don't understand the mental aspect of the game. It's really the fastest sport, but it comes in little bursts.
For all these people saying “Home runs don’t even go 120” well, a solid line drive would go faster than a homer, which usually arks in flight. Any line drive homer usually goes 110-120
@IamAlastair well actually the maximum amount of time a test match will last is 30 hours spread over 5 days. Its kind of like watching two baseball games a day for a week, easily managed...ODI's are done in 6 hours and T20s are done in under one baseball match. Baseball is awesome but cricket is amazing! :D
yeah didnt mean the DH part, but as for the .300, i was referring to average, instead of OBP, because if your average is .300+ every year, you are an all-star, and that can only mean your OBP is even higher than your average, because...well logic.
a better comparison would be the time a signal is sent from an earth station to a satellite (free space of 1/2 a second) and is received by another earth station (another 1/2 second). from pitcher to batter (1/2 second) to third baseman (another 1/2 second). the curious part is how when we observe a pitch that is delivered, then hit and finally caught by a third baseman, it seems a little more than one second has elapsed.
1st is my second posistion besides pitch and i do agree with you there also not only the scoops are always tough you have to be ready for pickoffs and if you drop the ball you feel like you suck
In cricket,it doesn't matter if you are bowling at 50mph or 90 mph.they may well be equally good bowlers. the spinners who bowl around 50-60 mph compensate the slow bowling with their huge amount of spin. their balls spin like about 60 degrees after bouncing. and that too not in that silly pitch area.the ball may be under the toes or upto the head
@indiajag1 Well seeing as how most MLB pitchers are throwing around 95 MPH, I don't think it's a stretch to say they'd be able to handle those bowlers just fine. In fact, there are some pitchers, mostly closers, who can throw around 103 MPH.
Reginald... MLB is way more difficult than little league. The fact that he got that few amount of errors as compared to how many chances he got is AMAZING!!!
@philliesgurl26 well , i came to the usa on a holiday for about a month and experienced fair amount of baseball be played. obviously i didn't master the game but got a decent amount of idea about it. i am aware of balls curving sliding dropping etc i wauld be fascinate by this if i had not watched a cricket ball spinning, i am not trying to prove any sport greater, and i was cool with baseball until some of the yanks commented negatively and attacked many of the cricket videos.......
Cool video but the third base is called hot corner because there are more RHB than there are LHB and many of the shots from RHB goes to third base when they pull the ball. Still the hardest position to play though. Ball usually screaming fast, miss and it's a 2B, plus have to throw across the diamond to get the runner. #respect
@philliesgurl26 the spinners in cricket bowl at 50-60 mph and their ball spins like 60 degrees after bouncing. thats simply unplayable for a newbie or a baseballer. and cricket bat is wider ,that's why 300 runs can be scored easily in cricket. but that doesn't mean batting is easier in cricket as they may face 100 balls even. stamina is required ,not like baseball where you hit a max of 3 times
@MrJMN2 I agree and disagree i agree that third base is hard because i play it,but im also a starting pitcher at 12 yrs. old with 73-78 mph fastball and i think that pitching definately is more stressful.
@daftintendo well, there are some bowlers in cricket who bowl only about 50 mph.......but mlb players still won't be able to hit them bcuz they are world class " spinners"
@MrJMN2 I AGREE WITH YOU ITS HARDEST....BUT I PLAY 3RD AND PITCHER FOR A TEAM THAT WENT TO THE WORLD SERIES,AND THIRD IS HARDER,BUT PITCHER IS MUCH MUCH MORE STRESSFUL (caps lock sorry :) )
@philliesgurl26 I know the ball comes really fast in baseball, but so does it in cricket (barehanded). if you dont believe me ,then you are free to search best cricket catches on youtube. and i may even agree that fielders nearer to the batter may wear those gloves , but why do the outfielder!!!!! I dont have any clue about that????
no not really.... Dustin's Pedroias' avg. line drives are 116.5 mph and that's from a 1 of the smallest who plays the game i think hes 5''8 or 5''7 or maybe 5''6 i cant remember but he is along those three
They over exaggerate the only person in a while that's done that is Giancarlo Stanton and has the most hits/ home runs at that speed but still definitely an over exaggeration
@LetsGetWilly I guess if you figure at the time of the taping of this show he was 1 of 30 in MLB starting at 3B, so he could technically be classified as a master of his craft. Is he within the top 10% of those 30? Nope.
@indiajag1 C'mon... you can't select a player who pitches... it was an average pitcher's throw on either sports... If you select the hardest thrower on cricket, the they may have as well selected the hardest thrower on baseball... but not, they have selected the average throw on baseball...
CONGRATS!!! And in addition to being an MLB third baseman who makes youtube videos playing the guitar rather mediocrely did you hit 44 homeruns in one season?
@WTFisvF Football is not a hard sport to play you just have to be extremely athletic. The great thing about baseball is that its possible for the most athletic person in the world to suck at it.
I love baseball and agree with you. However, I don't think you meant to say that the DH in the AL doesn't need to hit to play. That's actually all they do :P Also, saying Hall of Famers fail 7 times out of 10 is false and commonly stated: i would consider getting on base (walks as well as hits) a success, and an OBP of .300 isn't gonna get you on many all star ballots ;)
@zakjakestefan18 that's just baseless, the cricket bat is much more heavy than the baseball one ,even the cricket ball (leather) is slightly heavier than a baseball.
id love to know who can hit a ball with an exit velocity of 120 mph lol, also reynolds wasnt really a good 3b thats why they stuck his ass at 1st or dh in the al. if you want a guy who hits around .200 and strikes out 9/10 hes your man tho. NEHOY MENOY
Data from both HITf/x and TrackMan show that it is very, very rare for the ball to leave the bat at a speed as high as 120 mph. Such a ball hit at a 30 deg launch angle would travel about 500 ft in the air. VERY RARE. At whatever speed it leaves the bat, it loses about 15% of that speed between home plate and 3B. Sorry, guys, but these are facts.
I play twilight baseball these days. I'm actually pretty damn good relatively. How that's relevant I don't know, but you thought it was, so I thought I'd tell you. Anyways... yea, Reynolds did a nice job at 1st this year. But DAMN he sucked at 3rd
its been proven that the hardest basic step of any sports is hitting a baseball. basic meaning, you need to hit a baseball to play baseball (besides the exceptional pitcher and DH of the AL). hall of famers fail 7 times out of 10 and are considered the best players in the world. Athleticism is your eyes means how fast a player can run, or how strong they are (qualities of football, which im guessing you support more) arent what we should hold players to athleticism. athletes are skilled players.
I love how these Sports Science episodes keep using Mark Reynolds and call him things like, a "master of defending his position" (or some crap like that) and in the other video, a star hitter. Mark Reynolds is an awful defensive player, and one of the most infamous strikeout hitters in baseball history. He might be the single worst player to use in these "scientific" studies, but what are ya gonna do?
They put too much assuming into it what if the runner is slower than 15 MPH or if the ball is it so he dosent have to dive or if the batter gets jammed and hits it slower than 120 MPH or whatever they said
The average home run leaves the bat at around 105 MPH Mike Trout's last left at 111 MPH, there hasn't been a 120 MPH hit in a while Sport Science exaggerates everything
Matthew Shaver I was just about to come say that
Joey Gallo's HR last night left the bat at over 120 mph
Matthew Shaver ?lol I just thought about that
Matthew Shaver Aaron Judge was the most recent and that made headlines, so it's pretty rare.
It's still takes about .6 seconds for a 100 mph ball to get to the third baseman. Also, this is from 2009, not 2017.
Another thing I notice know is when they show his range they make a square that is 157 square feet and say that's how much ground he can cover, but he can't jump as far as those corners. A more accurate shape would be a semi circle.

Remember that while the pitcher stands 60.5 feet from the plate the pitch is not released from that distance.
Lol Mark Reynolds? I guess that's all they could get in terms of players. Imagine Manny Machado or Adrian Beltre "master" defending.
This was before Machado, and Reynolds is a great defender.
A-Rod?
I was hoping this video would show me how to get to third base.
I was mistaken.
XD
I know this was made in 2009 but I mean Mark Reynolds couldn't they have used someone more elite. Mark Reynolds would change teams every year!
Theweallstandup arenado if it was made now
A-Rod
120 mph off the bat? Not even if Giancarlo Stanton was taking all the pitches. Love these vids, but false on that fact...
Actually there have been balls clocked faster than 120mph off the bats. There have been high school games with balls coming off bats at 120mph but those are also composite bats and there was a big push to make them illegal because of how fast a ball could come off of them.
Stanton hit one 128 mph
it was a 4-6-3 double play ball
+Michaeljeferson 123*
They also said across the diamond is 120 ft. It’s 127.3 ft. These sport science guys know nothing
120MPH off the bat is superhuman. FOH
Reynolds is also the master of the K
aycheejee bitch what about now
IM CHUMMING he's the master of the RBI and HR
aycheejee "So what?"- Mark Reynolds.
To most players now it don't matter if you strike out, as long as you hit a few more homers

Bodie F this was made when technology wasn't that accurate
Amazing athletes that mark it. Awesome stuff

And yet they make it look so easy
*snickers* that’s cute. Is it just as hard as making left turns, yank?
@manifestgtr lol. so true. i have ADD but i play baseball for my Varsity team as a 9th grader
@manifestgtr You're right. Some are bothered by the slower pace of the game, but they likely don't understand the mental aspect of the game. It's really the fastest sport, but it comes in little bursts.
this is why i like playing third. you get plays and many people doubt you can get them out but if you have the arm you definitely can.
I thought it meant the other "third base"
@MrJMN2 but u dont have to move at all not like short or 2nd that are constantly moving
For all these people saying “Home runs don’t even go 120” well, a solid line drive would go faster than a homer, which usually arks in flight. Any line drive homer usually goes 110-120

i was going to try and counter that, but just the way you worded everything made it impossible. Best comment I've seen.
Reynolds has great range and a great glove, but an inconsistent arm. That's why he was so good at 1st base
@MrJMN2 or goalie in soccer
Reginald... MLB is way more difficult than little league. The fact that he got that few amount of errors as compared to how many chances he got is AMAZING!!!
@philliesgurl26 well , i came to the usa on a holiday for about a month and experienced fair amount of baseball be played.

id like to see what other other athletes can get up to in 90 feet
@dlMrINSPECTORlb not really...in some matches some fielders are like only ten feet away from the batsman
Should have used Ryan Zimmerman, he won the Golden Glove in 2009. He was a beast before that and he still is today.
@MrJMN2 127.28ft if anyone wanted to know exactly
Mark Reynolds was a sub par fielder when he played 3rd base. You could have gotten a much better fielder than Reynolds for this.
I used to play that base so well when I was 10. Oh the good ol' days
@MrJMN2 goalie in hockey is hard but its also a disadvantage
@MrJMN2 I agree and disagree i agree that third base is hard because i play it,but im also a starting pitcher at 12 yrs. old with 73-78 mph fastball and i think that pitching definately is more stressful.

From an old first baseman....we don't have a picnic either. Left handed hitters have more of a tendency to hit down the line than rightys.
@MrJMN2 i think catcher is harder.
@Jason372485 in the field not batting
@KingALEXtheGreat88 Oh did you steal 2nd or hit a triple?
What does offense have to do with defense in this case? Not to mention he K's 200+ times a year and has a pretty low OBP.
hes so good. underated also
@1999wally This video is also 3 years old.
@SteveDude64 all of the above
It should have been manny machado
Look at when this was made.
Robinson then
Ronda Roberts nah bro arenado for sure
@mnufa how are you supposed to catch a ball going 120mph without a glove, you would break your hand whether you were a cricket or baseball player.
@MrJMN2 Nah man its corner in football..and I play 3rd always have...
Imagine if they did this today with Arenado, Chapman, Machado, Bergman, or Urshela. They are straight Hoover’s at 3B.
what was his name?
There shouild be a sports science on first base also
@philliesgurl26 I know the ball comes really fast in baseball, but so does it in cricket (barehanded).
if you dont believe me ,then you are free to search best cricket catches on youtube.
and i may even agree that fielders nearer to the batter may wear those gloves , but why do the outfielder!!!!!
I dont have any clue about that????
@scapicoco yeah but they havent selected the average thrower for cricket....they selected a freaking 50 mph pitcher
I have a question, are you an MLB third baseman?
no not really.... Dustin's Pedroias' avg. line drives are 116.5 mph and that's from a 1 of the smallest who plays the game i think hes 5''8 or 5''7 or maybe 5''6 i cant remember but he is along those three

Right
@manifestgtr i have adhd and i love baseball
Are the other infield positions any different? Particularly first base as it is just as close.
Less baseballs are hit to first but yes all infield spots are very challenging
Alex baseballdude thx dude
First baseman doesn't needs to throw the ball, it's easier
Franklin - They do sometimes
+THR333Sync It's easier, that's why old slugger like papi and pujols can play 1st base but not 3rd base
@indiajag1 C'mon... you can't select a player who pitches... it was an average pitcher's throw on either sports... If you select the hardest thrower on cricket, the they may have as well selected the hardest thrower on baseball... but not, they have selected the average throw on baseball...

@zakjakestefan18 that's just baseless, the cricket bat is much more heavy than the baseball one ,even the cricket ball (leather) is slightly heavier than a baseball.
Translation: "I wanted to troll you, but you're awesomeness wouldn't allow it"
id love to know who can hit a ball with an exit velocity of 120 mph lol, also reynolds wasnt really a good 3b thats why they stuck his ass at 1st or dh in the al. if you want a guy who hits around .200 and strikes out 9/10 hes your man tho. NEHOY MENOY
this is my posistion it shows how tough it is down there
im a pretty big guy that plays 3rd base. it really isn't that hard lol. 3rd base ftw!!
Yeaaaah proud to be at third base!!
We all r proud to be 3rd Base
3rd base bros.......wait that doesn't sound right lol
When I played football I was a NT/0 tech, anyone a nosetackle bro?
AegonTheConqueror ahhah xD that just made my night!!
Im also a 3rd baseball but im 11 and im small but i can throw a ball 65mph from 3rd to 1st
I play 3rd and i love it
@MrJMN2 qb??
It is exceedingly rare for the batted ball speed to be as high as 120 mph.
Data from both HITf/x and TrackMan show that it is very, very rare for the ball to leave the bat at a speed as high as 120 mph. Todd Helton was amazing.
"Called.. The Hot Corner"
So Anticlimatic
TheStoneEye it's called the hot corner, no lie
@manifestgtr The science of it is cool, but I don't enjoy, but I don't hate it.
the baseball's like "oh hai mark"
yes...
I what way?
umad?
You said he is a gold glover then argued with hitting stats. Good logic
its been proven that the hardest basic step of any sports is hitting a baseball. basic meaning, you need to hit a baseball to play baseball (besides the exceptional pitcher and DH of the AL). hall of famers fail 7 times out of 10 and are considered the best players in the world. it's stuff like this that makes baseball so interesting...people who say baseball is boring must have severe adhd
David Wright and Evan Longoria are the best Thirdbasemen
+bodie f dude, the little league field is closer than major league field, so it's diferent
I love how these Sports Science episodes keep using Mark Reynolds and call him things like, a "master of defending his position" (or some crap like that) and in the other video, a star hitter. They put too much assuming into it what if the runner is slower than 15 MPH or if the ball is it so he dosent have to dive or if the batter gets jammed and hits it slower than 120 MPH or whatever they said
@womendonthaverights yeah but wen a guy turns on th ball right down the line its coming harer and faster to you
