    Ive watched Free Solo many times and I have also watched Alex's other climbing videos as well, but I still cannot grasp what he really did on El Cap. I find myself so fascinated and intrigued by his mind, his athleticism, and even philanthropy. He's all around just a great guy doing what he really does, not for anyone but himself. Amazing.

    I like his quote about insignificance, its interesting how we spend our lives, worrying, full of insecurities, wondering why we aren't better, wondering how we can be more important, have more of an impact on the world. But then you go out and see the tremendous bohemoth that is the world we live in, you see a visual representation of how umimpactful, how insignificant you truly are, but instead of the horror of an existential crises you should of expected, you feel happy, it brings you joy, laughter, it feels truly beautiful, and in that moment you realise seeking meaning out of life is a fools errand, the world doesn't have a plan for you nor does it care to make you one, you are life, you are simulatenously alone yet connected with all other life and you are what you feel, make and believe.
    If you wish to live, you must first die trying.

      @MrAristaeus 3 года назад +2

      @@MrFreeGman no. Anything that redefines what humanity is capable goes far beyond entertainment. Look beyond your surface impression of “wow! I couldn’t do that. How entertaining!” and consider the fact that no one has achieved this and not only that, no one thought it could be achieved. This achievement commands respect. Alex Honnold has many thousands of intricate moves in his head and has a blueprint of footholds and handholds in a precise sequence. That acquired knowledge takes massive amounts of preparation/dedication over at least a decade. It goes way beyond an activity that is solely concerned with an entertainment factor.

    4:15 "im not trying to overcome my fear, im just trying to step outside of it"
    Alex Honnold.
    MRI Brain Scans were done on Alex, and showed his Amygdala - the part of your brain which regulates one's fear response - barely responded at all when viewing a series of photos that would be considered terrifying for other average, everyday people.
    Him surviving this free solo ascent isn't down to Luck whatsoever.. Its down to repeating the same route over and over with ropes and gear, and visualizing every step and movement along the way, until he became comfortable enough for it to be second nature to him.
    This is the ONLY way this feat was made successful... With a complete mastery of the muscle memory involved, and the coordinated movements that were so entrenched into his subconscious they were second nature to him. Removing any and all fear in the process.
    Alex Honnold is the most precise, dedicated, and methodical athlete to be able to perform at this extremely high level for such an extreme distance.

But still, every clip I see of this particular ascent makes my mouth drop open. Even people who can't appreciate the technical aspects of the climbing can still feel this one, because everyone has climbed a tree or a boulder at some point in their life and felt that feeling where you're up high enough that you can't turn around and go back down until you've gone the rest of the way up. By far the greatest athletic achievement in human history. If you were to ask me who the greatest athlete of all time is..... without a doubt its Mr. Honnold. I watch this video every single day. If he was able to do this with the same mind we've all been given, then we all are capable of things much greater than we can fathom. The human mind is the most powerful thing ever created. A number of people were asking where to see the full movie. It will be broadcast on March 3, 2019 on National Geographic (at least in the USA and Europe).
    The people leaving negative comments appeared to me to just be people that had not worked out how to use a 360° video. I watched this on VR goggles and it was breathtaking. It would have been great it this video had been longer.
    The one question I have, that I did not see answered in the comments, is what 360° camera was used for this video. They did a great job of hiding how the cameras are mounted.
    A truly impressive 360° video.

    I stayed in the valley climbing and cycling every day. The only solo free climbing I did was bouldering the massive rocks at the base of the walls. I still could have died from a fall, and I never did fall, but, the difference to me, between climbing around on some boulder, as opposed to a full climb of Royal Arches, or Half Dome. etc., is the commitment. The commitment to summiting, because the option of climbing down, if you decide you can't continue, is not an option. I learned some techniques from one of the best free climbers ever, Yvon Chouinard. He was staying in the valley when I was, and he was kind enough to bouldering with me, to give me some what could be life saving pointers. I will always cherish those moments.
