For a person who climbs the highest walls, he’s a very grounded guy
@Ringsfjord you didn't get it...
I think it’s because he is grounded and very zen that he has such amazing achievements.
Bars
That’s why he’s still alive.
That might have to do with the weight of his steel balls
Most celebs: *random object* just kinda makes me happy
Alex: without this I would be dead.
haha literally
😂 funny but true
Yea coz he's already got two of the rarest items, two spheres made of uru+adamantium+amazonium+nth.
other celebs: I *love* my Chani™️ face mask
Alex: WATER. FOOD. CHALK.
@@k.k.7797 "Water. Food. Chalk" title of his autobiography? Haha
alex had to struggle to find 10 possessions
He probably ran out of ideas and brought out the food and water😂 he is the least materialistic person on this show for sure!
Lezrleia lmao right
If he was allowed, he would have gifted 5 of his items choices to someone else.
My guy anly needs t shirt, shorts, climbing shoes, and chalk bag. Thats it
@@littlenotsohomestead lol but food and water are essentials technically. I think the first thing everyone should do on this show is whip out the grub haha
First guy on this show that didn’t make me feel poor
Tyson Chanig Until you realize that he has over a dozen pairs of climbing shoes that all cost around 120+ bucks and ropes that are in the same price range
@@MisterK9739 ropes are way more expensive than shoes.
@@MisterK9739 He also left out his rack. That's a grand at least (tho probably he got some for free)
@@verbalwound5874 Not at all. You should buy somewhere else...
The climbing gears are pretty expensive, probably about thousands of dollars worth of equipment, so you should feel broke.
i love how he looks at the people instead of the camera. it really does bring a realistic vibe of this guy. i like him lol
Alex do that in all interviews. Even in his documentary. I think it's just because he is a little bit shy and gets nervous of the camera. It's a good way to loosen up
It’s pretty obvious he’s on the autism spectrum, which explains his speech patterns and noticeably different eye contact
@@saruhhhh relax guy, he’s not insulting him, Alex was in an engineering degree before he dropped out to pursue climbing and its clear that he is a very intelligent and focused individual, we all differ on many neurological spectrums and it seems evident that Alex is a little different than most people, that isn’t a bad thing at all, its part of why he’s so successful
nice catch
@@saruhhhh why are you acting like assuming he has autism is a bad thing? he definitely does have a lot of autistic traits that autistic people have noticed and talked about
Lmao
“I got a sweater for when i get chilly
a water bottle for when i get thirsty
and snacks for when I get hungry.”
That was very literal and I love it
*essentials*
"Here's my front door key. It opens my house. Yeah"
I got climbing gear for when I climb.
I can't tell if his bottle is tiny or his hands are giant
edit: it's a half liter, but probably his hands are also pretty muscled, lol
He is definitely Alex “No Big Deal” Honnold.
his real ten essentials are actually just his fingers

And even then..
Hate to be that guy but it's 8 fingers
To think his life hangs by a 1/4" line when he isn't free climbing is astounding
Alex is maybe the least materialistic person I’ve seen on this show.
no stress he is
I aspire to be like him. I'm very materialistic and have the newest of everything when it comes out. This guy gets the right idea tho. I'm going to try to not care as much and just live.
But still the most interesting
He doesnt care about hypes like SUPREME..
Will Thompson the only one
The only dude who came with his actual essentials
Pistachio's de-shell themselves when they see Alex's hands.
Eric David 😂😂😂😂
Oh god. Gold 😆
Nailed it! Worth scrolling down to find this comment 😄
😩😂
This is a golden comment
Yeah he took the “can’t live without” thing very literally
Charlie Keeler yea cause he doesn’t live with things he could live without
I was looking for that comment
i saw this and thought of him not having climbing shoes on his free solo and boom, hahah holy crap.
@@GavynPendleton he meant he could literally die without that stuff, and not that he is not materialistic. ... dense much?
Hi Im Alex, I have 2 lungs, 1 heart, a brain, an iphone se, some rope, an apple...
On his iphone: if it falls off the mountain, it falls off the mountain 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This man has No attachment to material things. An inspiration tbh.
That is what I say and my parents aren’t happy with it
Also in his documentary free solo he said that if he dies then the people who love him probably won’t really care and that they will get over it.
Kameron2K At least he’s still caring and cool
But the thing is he can afford a new phone while some other people couldn’t
Yes! Especially because he uses his money to explore instead of watching expensive kpop concerts and going to harry potter theme parks
I noticed that he keeps what works for him. It doesn't have to be the newest version. The mark of the true Craftsman, if it works- keep it.
Yes indeed. The mark of a smart consumer as well. We don't NEED the newest things all the time. In fact, worn out looks better than brand new.
WTF SF battle damage
So much easier to focus on what matters when we don't cloud our mind with trying to obtain new things. This guy is all about improving, maintaining, and experiencing his craft. The rest is just necessity to keep himself healthy, followed by what ever else he has time for. His priorities are set straight, and I bet he never has to sit through stupid parties he doesn't want to be at, as such.
WTF SF worn out looks shit
also very good for the planet. Buy more expensive stuff that will last you rather then shitty things that will break. Thrift stores are the best.
I love how his hands just have like a permanent layer of chalk on them
Nah, he has chalk on his hands because he climbed up the building to get to the interview.
THANK YOU ! I was looking for that comment 👏👏
@@meanamin2463 Why? Why waste time looking for it?
@@SnailHatan To relate with others? Natural human instinct.
they probably forced him to chalk his hands to add emphasis lol
Everyone else on GQ= Look at my gold plated iPhone
Alex honnold= I have pistachios
That's me lol
I dont care about gold plated iphones but I did catch myself wishing I had some pistachios right now
That guy who gave him the laptop case probably was thinking: "This will serve him for a few weeks while he gets to buying a better case."
5 bucks it was Cedar, Mikey, or Jimmy that gave him that sleeve!
Lmao
I feel so honored!
Crazy that a man with such huge hands uses an iphone SE.
@@mordecaismopstick i think he meant its not comfortable to use such a small phone with those hands
Aniq Anuar lol true I just think it’s cool that he uses an small old ass phone when he could have any phone he wants. Most other guys on gq come to flex, Alex isn’t like that

Love how he said in a couple of years maybe he'll get wireless 😂😂 says allot about him that if he doesn't really need it he won't buy it
To be exceptional at something, you have to be obsessed. You can tell there is no room
for anything in his mind other than climbing. And that is why he is the best
I disagree to a certain extent. I'm exceptional at quite a few things, but have sadly never enjoyed any of them enough to become obsessed and make them the center of my life. I envy people who can identify that one thing to obsess over that gives them limitless joy and purpose.
@@cobbler88 He means exceptional in a different way than you. This guy is exceptional because he is THE BEST (most would argue). You are likely exceptional at things relative to those around you, which isn't bad, we all are, but you probably aren't the one of the best in the world at any of those things, just good at them, or as good as many others.
@@parker4025 That means he's using the term incorrectly. You should probably take it up with him. 🤣
@@cobbler88 He isn't using it incorrectly. He's using it in a different context.
@@parker4025 him being "THE BEST" is very arguable honestly, most people now would say Adam Ondra is the best climber in the world right now based on sport climbing, bouldering, and big wall climbs that he’s done so far. Alex would be probably considered the best free soloer but not "the best".
I love how Alex explains every little detail of his essentials and his story with them.
Here I got a backpack, here is the story
Here I got a notebook, here is my advice
Here I got a rope, more tips for you
Here I got my water bottle, here I put my water and I do my smoothies

Alex's response to this series is like
"Wh-why do you wanna know about my water bottle...?"

He's so down to earth, that's one of the many reasons why I love him!
So humble

“National parks pass - most important thing in the wallet” legendary quotes
I can't stop listening to this guy. How Precise, pragmatic, commited all his toughts are. He's definetly made with a different material that average humans
Finally a non-materialistic episode, amazing to see people who use their things til they're done. Great for the environment and so anti-consumerism i love it
I love how he says “it still works” he doesn’t care about the aesthetics or clout rather that the tool does its job

He has the biggest, brightest, purest, cutest eyes I've seen on a human being! 😍
My man brought a sweater and an apple and upstaged everyone before flexing their 5k toiletry handbags 🤘
This is a guy that genuinely uses the things that he endorses, I have so much respect for Alex Honnold
This man literally just chose one random day not to eat meat anymore. Has been Vegetarian for years now on ethical reasons (which is the only logical reason to give up meat in my opinion). Gives 33% of his income to Charity, a nonprofit he created himself. Lived out of a van, by choice, for years while writing books and doing talks around the country to inspire others. Has Aspergers, and has mastered the art of public speaking. Is the only living human being to Free-Solo El Capitan or the like. Which is 1,000 meters, and did it in less than 4 hours. Later that same day he went hang-gliding.
Meanwhile, I struggle to get out of bed somedays. Really gives you a contrast of people in this world. I'm just glad there are people like him out there that inspire people like me to continue getting out of bed everyday.
That was real
I've been following him for the last years and he is truly an inspirational individual
Hang-boarding, as in strength excercise. Not hang-gliding. And on the asperger's thing, I don't think he's gotten that diagnosed. His mom said in the film that she believes his late father had aspergers and she can see similarities in Alex's behaviour, but not more than that.
Alex is an incredible dude, but you're kinda shooting misinformed stuff here and that's a little disrespectful, even though you don't mean to be.
I’d say there’s other good reasons to eat meat, environmental reasons for example
@@otisbl1405 true, that's actually why he gave up meat. In one of his documentaries he says 'i gave up meat due to the environmental impact and then started to learn more about the ethics of it once i'd already quit'
at 01:02 he mentions a project he's trying. He actually managed to send it and it was his first of the grade, 9a(5.14d). Breaking into the 9's is a massively difficult thing to do and is especially impressive for a big wall climber like alex.
If anybody wants a reference point, his free solo of el cap via freerider has a grade of 5.12d/5.13a. The new route he sent called arrested development is graded 5.14d.

O M G! This man has no materialistic needs, this man knows his priorities correctly. Amazing.
v1d300 he donates all his money badically
If material stuff were
his priority, why is that not correct?
@@MrElpajita what are you on about?
Near death experiences change your perspective quite a bit. All that Gucci flex shit is people trying to fill the hole and missing the point
@@MrElpajita That can't be one's priority in life because there is no end to materialistic needs, by definition it means an excessive need of possessions which means at no point in that person's life would there be a a sense of self-worth or accomplishment as they never would have satisfied themselves to the point of being done or successful. This also means to achieve that materialistic need that person will be working and feeling miserable everyday about it as their priority is not to live their life happy but to live a life to keep possessing things as much as they can, a never ending cycle.
This guy should be recognized as the greatest athlete of all time. He set the bar for human endurance and sheer will along with other factors of course. Only a few sports in the world that would have an individual’s life in the forefront.
Love people like Alex. Not materialistic , not trying to flex. Just humble , doing his thing and excelling and inspiring. We need a lot more people like him
Huge respect for people that use their gadgets until they literally start falling apart. That's how it's supposed to be. 🤠
Companies who build their business model on planned obsolescence: *heavy breathing*
I think it's a good idea to change Rock-climbing equipment just because it's such a dangerous sport even if the equipment isn't falling apart
@@primekrunkergamer188 Well to a certain degree sure. But still, quality stuff will last and can safely be used for a long time. Like it's not like he is using a trashed rope just because it's 5 years old. He will check before every use and definitely decommission it if necessary
Well when it comes to rock climbing gear, waiting until it literally falls apart is dangerous
@@primekrunkergamer188It just doesn't make sense to switch out equipment that is built to last. Getting a new pair of equipment introduces a new set of variables that didn't exist before and might even be more dangerous.

Let’s be honest, Alex is probably the only guest to ever bring actual essentials to this show
Alex is one of my favorite free spirited person out there. I was scrolling through GQ’s playlist of 10 essentials and he is the only one I wanted to watch. He is the epitome of someone who can find happiness in living simply and minimally.
Man this guy is awesome. Very rarely do you see elite athletes at the top of their game living humble lifestyles, and being so level headed.
It's funny how there is even chalk stuck under his fingernails while he does the interview.
Luke Flanagan that shits impossible to get out
Evan Woods facts. and then your hands sweat and the chalk gets absorbed into your hands for about a day and your hands feel all dry and weird
Maybe he climbed the building and came through the window to his interview
I know it’s the worst
lol didn't even take the stairs. climbs through the window covered in chalk like, "hey, is this GQ"
A man about "true" essentials, not just stuff that is unnecessary and for the flare.
here we go again bitching
Please explain. I’m just stating a fact here mate.
Jonathan Ng isnt most of this for his kind of flare rock climing
Leon Jurcevic But his stuff is essential needs mostly. Water, food, shoes etc. Then for his profession he’s got the bare minimum. He doesn’t need a fancy gold watch or chain.
Manic Rhymes an $80 harness? A $25 chalk bag? An easily over $200 pair of noise canceling headphones? Sure, his everyday items are bare and “normal” but let’s not act like this man isn’t willing to spend money on and/or endorse extremely expensive products.
Feels so unpretentious, and genuine. One of the greatest athletes to ever walk this planet, and there seems to be no ego. Humble, down to Earth.
I love how he prioritizes (or doesn't) the few possessions he has. It if works, he never replaces it. Everything is a story or an act of generosity. The one thing I cannot believe he doesn't get a sponsor for is an iPhone case, I mean of all the people in the world to sponsor a case for dropping your phone, it would be him!!!
