  • GOULASH...a hearty soup-stew known around the world. Deronda demonstrates how fast, easy, & delicious it is to make the American version of GOULASH!! Click on SHOW MORE below for recipe...
    GOULASH
    1 LB. lean ground meat
    1 cup onions, chopped
1/2 cup green bell pepper, chopped (optional)
    1 teaspoon garlic, minced
1 (15 OZ.) can diced tomatoes
1 (15 OZ.) can tomato sauce
    3 tablespoon tomato paste
    1-1/2 cup water
    2 teaspoons dried oregano
    1 teaspoons Paprike
    2 teaspoon kosher salt
    Pinch Crushed Red Pepper
    1 bay leaf
    2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 cup (wheat or white) pasta
Colby Jack shredded cheese for topping GOULASH, optional
    1. In a 5-6 quart Dutch oven, or heavy sauce, over medium heat, add ground beef. Cook until meat is lightly brown with a little pink still showing.
    2. Add onions & green bell pepper. Cook until onions are translucence.
    3. Add garlic. Cook 1 minute.
    4. Add oregano, paprika, bay leaf, salt, and crushed red pepper. Stir well.
    5. Pour in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomate paste, and water. Stir well. Bring to a boil. Cover. Cook 15 minutes.
    6. Stir in pasta (make sure the tomato sauce is bubbling, before adding the pasta). Cover. Cook pasta according to package directions.
    7. Let GOULASH rest for 10 minutes before serving.
TIPS: Store GOULASH in refrigerator, in an airtight container, up to 3 days!!

Just made this and adopted it over to my pressure cooker, turned out amazing. The only thing different that I did was cook the noodles separately and added 1 tsp of sugar to bring some more acidity as I love the tomatoey taste and I also added 1 tsp of chili powder on top of the rest of the ingredients to make the tomato sauce more of a spicy kick. Everything was copied over, just added the extra two. Freaken tastes mind blown amazing with some fresh Parmesan cheese added and some white bread and butter.

Goulash was always my favorite dish my mother made, coming from such a heavily traditional German family it was always a nice break from the normal dishes served replaced by a Hungarian dish. I'm only a third generation American so my family is still very much set in German traditional dishes around the holidays and throughout the year for gatherings. Hell, I'll never forget my grandfather swearing at the television in German and the banter between my grandparents as my grandma was in the kitchen and my pop pop was sitting in his recliner reading the newspaper.

Variations of this recipe have been around for decades. My southern AL father hated pasta when I was growing up but he would eat goulash. He got the recipe from an Army cook he was stationed with and gave it to Mom when they married. This was his favorite pasta. Mom didn't make it with bell pepper and her spices were a couple cloves minced garlic and a couple tsp of chili powder, salt and pepper. This recipe looks great, Deronda, thank you for sharing!

This is the closest recipe I can find the way my mother used to make it. Except she always added *chili powder* rather than Worcestershire sauce. We also liked to use the small shell pasta, although it really doesn't make any difference it just seemed a little more exotic I guess.
I'm glad to see your recipe includes *green peppers* because I think that is one of the taste that really sets off goulash as being far and distinct from just a spaghetti Marion's. Many recipes use celery, but we never did.
I was always a bit confused about the three different textures of tomatoes, from chopped to paste to sauce but it all is important to provide enough fluid to boil and *cook the pasta in the tomato sauce* , another thing which I think is key.
A lot of other recipes have the pasta made in water and then added later, and I think that is a big mistake in missing out on *cooking in the tomato and spice flavors* to the pasta which is normally essentially tasteless when made separately .
Great job and thank you very much for providing the measurements of each ingredients so I can more closely replicate and share my mother's recipe!

    • @Jack_Stafford
      @Jack_Stafford 5 лет назад

My mother always added chili powder, and I often would say that you're going to turn it into chili by doing that call Mom but without it it just didn't taste right. After all chili powder is just a name, it's a combination of spices that can be used for many things besides chili. And it does give it that extra zing and specific taste that makes American goulash what it is.
We also like to use small shell pasta, really the shape of the pasta doesn't make much difference but for some reason the shell shape seem to kind of scooped up and hold more of the seasoned tomato sauce then regular macaroni noodles.

    Hi Deronda.. Good Day!
Can I just use the marinara sauce instead of tomato sauce and diced tomato

    • @Jack_Stafford
      @Jack_Stafford 5 лет назад

I think marinara sauce has other seasoning in it that may give the goulash an off taste. Sometimes you marinara sauce can have a sweet taste to it call Mom like some barbecue sauces, where goulash is definitely meant to be more savory. Nothing with sugar really would taste right in my opinion in traditional American goulash.

Can I just use Italian tomatoes (diced) and avoid the Italian seasoning or oregano as you've added? Trying to simplify this on a very tight budget. I don't have fresh onion so I need to use drier pinion not sure how much. Heck I don't even have a green pepper I never used one in mine but I lost all recepies, my home burned down so I am working to reestablish my new box of recipes and am now living on a very tight budget! But reestablish and live on is what we all do after devastation.. Thank you looks delish

Great recipe! Although next time I think I’ll dial back on the oregano otherwise it’s great!

It might actually be good for some people but I'm actually born and raised from Clarksdale, MS and we don't make that way at all. But everyone does it differently.
