- We made this short film to show at the International Maritime Film Festival in Bucksport Maine the weekend of September 29th, 30th and October 1st. The film festival is jointly put on by Downtown Bucksport and Wooden Boat magazine.
The short explains a little bit about how we got started and what we have gone through in the last year and half setting up our build and getting started on bringing Arabella to life.
We are overjoyed to be able to share this with everyone and are incredibly thankful for all the support we have received.

This project is nothing short of a miracle. I wish you a lifetime of enchantment sailing this magnificent boat.
Way back when I finally got a Smart TV I indulged in RUclips vids on the JumboTron. The video that got my attention and my first from your channel was the pouring of the lead keel. Since then I have set my fridays aside for the next chapter and now up to date (yes I binged watched every thing prior to the lead pour). Thank you Steve and Alex for the in depth building of "Acorn to Arabella" This video from 2 yrs ago slipped by me but was/is a good brief of what has transpired so far.
This was just unbelievably great to watch, the friendship, the build, the journey! Adventure!!
So glad I stumbled on this channel.
This is why I moved back to Maine, after a decade of living "away"...Maine'rs CAN DO!!! Thank you for the great content!
I grew up in the 1970’s on a 10,000+ acre ranch in the mountains of NM. I worked on old equipment my grandfather purchased, often used in the 1910’s-1940’s. When I saw your band saw ..... equipment of that early and latter industrial revolution was art.
One piece of equipment were a couple of early single piston motors with massive flywheels. I believe they weighed about 6000 lbs fully assembled. Once set in place, they stayed there until we sold the land in the 90’s. I was in the Navy, my parents were getting older and tired. I’d kill to own the land and equip again.
Something about working with land, animals and ones hands....
The rebuilding of the old band saw, the peg leg, and the family and friends helping to move the wood was so neat. What a great story, can't wait to see the next chapters.
What an amazing friendship!
I gotta say, with the way the world is right now, it's almost therapeutic watching you guys create such a beautiful thing. The smiles you've provoked in me haven't been tinged with cyncism and it seems so long since I've not felt disdain for just about everything.
Keep it up😉
My step dad, a wood boat builder/shipwright (he helped build the Denis Sullivan in Milwaukee), waxed on delightfully about your endeavor over dinner Sunday night. He's been following you guys for a while. Sent me the link to your site. Just got done watching the film short and all I can say is... If you can see it, it will be.
Thank you Miranda! We are so glad to be bringing people some enjoyment from this project. And thank you for the words of encouragement. We can definitely see it, so it shall be!
Bravo. Watching both of you work together is all inspiring. Can't believe I binge watched all your videos so far. There hasn't been a challenge you guys haven't met with accomplishment. Just keep at it. All the best.
Brilliant! Some stuff that I've never seen before other than a few in intros. I came on board like a lot of others with the lead keel pour, but I have been here every week since, and still loving it.
The peg leg was the best!
Thanks!
Desperate times call for desperate measures!!
OK fess up - what happened?
So amazing to re-store that 100 year old band saw. Nice job. 5:16
Thanks! Did you see the two videos all about restoring it?
Yes, and the future birds nest too.

It's such a beautiful boat. I'm anxious to see it on the water.
You guys are literally living my dream. I ultimate goal in life as of right now is to build a wooden ship and sail it across the Atlantic or at least in the Caribbean. And maybe one day have a frigate sized ship. I enjoy seeing and knowing there are others out there like me that not only have the same goals but are already doing them. It gives me more people I can ask for help and advice from.
It's nice to know we are not the only dreamers out there. There are a lot of avenues for support and advice, just have to look. The best advice we can give is to pick a goal, figure out the steps to get there and then start ticking them off. One day you will get there but only if you start and don't stop.
Looking forward to progress and finally a beautiful ship to sail to unbelievable places.
I love the peg-leg. My brother who is an emergency medical physician in Florida would have loved such peg-leg as he did his surgeries.
Massive respect! You guys are amazing. Can't wait to see what comes next.
That is amazing what y'all are doing man sorry about your leg well foot but the peg leg. Haha that was funny but cool great job y'all keep it up can't weight to see more. Keep smiling and god bless
Whats really cool is the hardest part is done. Once you start hanging wood off the keel it starts to go fast and will look more and more like a boat every time you work on it. Great job on everything im happy i got to see this.
She is looking more boat like every day right now, first planks will be hung before the new year!
Wow man both of you guys story to make this boat is so amazing! I wish you both the best of luck with the boat build and the video!
Amazed...
That's an amazing project lads. A great friendship and proper outlook will steer you well. I've always wanted to build a boat to live in here on the Shannon. Oh well, maybe one day.
My father restored a 1932 William Atkins Sloop, she was my home for most of my childhood
Cool!
There's all the pettiness, meanness judgement, avarice, lying and cheating and then there are folk like this. It speaks straight to my soul, beautiful. This is spiritual living and the sea will bring that in spades (or waves perhaps). I've been fortunate to have done some blue water sailing on a tall ship (Bark Europa) but I wish I'd not been so caught up in the career/professional rat race when I was young and gone to sea as crew on a tall ship. So, as a retiree, I'm living somewhat vicariously through the exploits of folks such as yourselves (Tally Ho anyone?). You Tube is a wonderful resource. Anything I am interested in (and there's a lot) is available from beginnings to the nth degree.
Glad you are enjoying following our journey! and Leo's as well!
You guys are incredible overcoming adversity through Community that's fantastic
Just spent the whole day watching your videos and didn’t know you were climbers too! Crazy cool channel guys, keep it up!
All right, guys. I just found your channel and have been binging from the beginning. It's all been interesting, but this one. This one sealed the deal; choked me up and brought tears to my eyes. Great video, I'm in for the long haul now! Thanks and keep up the good work.
Glad you’re on the journey with us!
Great video...don't know how I missed this one!
Awesome project - I started watching around the keel pouring/lifting out of the ground stage - really excellent work.
Awesome work! Fantastic.
Nice film guys!
I’m hooked on the story. Binge worthy watching for sure. Hope to catch up before she floats. Respect.
God’s blessings and success
Found you guys through "TheTradesmanChannel2017"
Glad I did. Will binge the earlier videos ASAP. SUBd for sure. And shared. Thank you guys for sharing your journey.
Hi Thomas! Psyched that you are enjoying it! And thank you for following and sharing!
You're most welcome.
Amazing!
Even though I doubt it would happen, I bought a set of Gartside plans for a 32' boat. I've been researching in books and WoodenBoat forum about boat building. Really enjoying your videos and how you work through each step. I would like to attend the wooden Boatbuilding school in Washington too.
Keep up the good work.
Love the peg leg!! Thinking I need one myself!! I’ve got minimum 6weeks to go
8:30 or so in, that just shows that if we work together and love thy neighbor we can accomplish anything. Shows humanity has a chance. ☺👍
Absolutely! No one believed we would be able to move it, the look on everyone's face when a bunch of people did something a tractor could not do was priceless!! Many hands make lighter work =)
I like the stars and crescent moons in the fire box 👍
I love the pirate leg!
Thanks! It was not a fun experience but the peg leg was far preferable to crutches!
ive enjoyed very much watching your videos. this one was done so well and i enjoyed it too. keep up the good work.
Love what you guys are doing. I’d join you if I didn’t live 3000ml away, and had 2 mortgages...keep the dream, and stay safe. Can’t wait to see your progress.
Thank you! We are, in fact, trying to avoid the mortgages and 40hr work weeks. If you do get free time and find yourself near western Massachusetts, feel free to get a hold of us!
I love it! You guys broke out of the routine and are on an amazing journey. Life is finite. You will look back on your accomplishment and your memories will sustain you well till the end.
Thanks!
That's exactly how we see it! =)
How very fortunate you boys are. Continue the march.
I’ve been binge watching your videos, impressive work and drive. You are definitely part of what makes America GREAT!!
Thanks! Glad you have been enjoying them!
This is what I've been looking for !!
How so?
Glad to finally view your build on here. Best wishes.
Thanks!
I just found this channel, and I'm more than impressed by what you're doing.
Excellent video ! Thanks ! ❤️❤️❤️
this video is so good, it shows so much more of who you are
Fantastic. I live vicariously through you.
Thanks! Glad to hear you are enjoying the journey! Stoked to have you following along!
Nice work and the peg leg is awesome lol
Nice job for not being a boatwright(s)!! Keep pushing forward toward the dream!!! Nice stick of wood you found on this episode!! Very rare!! I’m in!!😁😎🔨✏️📐
Thanks! It is a beautiful piece of wood and we will for sure keep chugging towards our dream!
Time for a two year retrospective!
What a beautiful old band saw
Just found your channel and watched my first episode. I’m hooked!
Nice! Thanks! Psyched to have you following along!
Hang in there KP!
Real good work on the film. It really shows the hard work and ingenuity that goes into a boat build project. Kudos to both of you for your determination to make it happen. Ten years to build a boat that will be around for 100 years. That's history in the making and very few people would tackle such and immense project. A journey begins with the first step, good luck on this adventure.
Thank you for your kind words!
WOW!!!!
I have to admit that peg leg was a brilliant idea. I kind of miss seeing Alex the channel is not quite all the same without him, but I do understand life is like that its throws curve balls at you like that, but nevertheless I still miss him.
So much done in a year and a half but so much more to do. I hope that it at least feels like it's downhill from here. =)
Stuck in a binge watch, don't know weather to like you guys or curse you. 😉
Love the short film, I'm wondering what the song is that starts at about 1:24 ?
This is absolutely amazing!
Thanks!
You boys just entered my top 10 favourite people in the world
Wow! Thanks!
We hope your family members don't read these comments, they might be offended! haha ;-)
Just found your channel today with the pouring of the keel and now this....WOW!! Amazing work and excellent craftsmanship. Subscribed and I'll be following along.
Thanks! Happy to have you following our journey!
Superb work Great to bump into you by chance. Love from the UK to a great project Well done lads,
Blaisey
Thanks!
Glad you are enjoying following our journey!
Steve I have a lot to learn. Watching you trim those dovetail tenons I couldn't help but think "where's my belt sander"?
Was so great to hang out with you guys yesterday at the JD Tent Sale. Thanks so much for coming and again, I very much admire what you guys are doing! Very cool. Sharon
Thanks! We had a great time and are looking forward to doing it again next year!
Awesome guys.
Thanks!
Hey Boyz, what waterproofing sealant did you use on the keel timber base?
Right now a mixture of linseed oil + kerosene + a shot of copper naphthenate. It will all get carved away when we do the final shaping, it's just to keep bugs/fungus away and to help it dry slowly and not check too badly.
That's super cool. I'm a construction carpenter but I think making stuff from raw wood looks really interesting. Too bad most people don't have the cash to build things the hard way.
Came over from Salt & Tar, went through your video's and picked this one to see if I liked. You earned a sub with the peg leg!
no trees were harmed to make this video,,,,,,hehe u men are legends in the making
Need to visit
one of the best i have seen
Thanks!
Spicy110 sent me here👍 awesome stuff
Peg leg was pure genius!
wish i had one when i broke my leg.
very nice!
Thanks! Crutches are the worst! The leg was made out of desperation to get back to work on Arabella.
Lovely video and I love your whole process man! However I have one concern. What about the stress crack in the keel wood?? I don't know if that wood was fully dried when delivered but even then there is a huge chance it could expand over time.
It was green when we got it and small checks are not a real issue so long as they don't run through the planking rabbet. We are doing our best to mitigate them and once she hits the water the keel will swell up to full size and any checks should swell shut.
Acorn To Arabella did you guys put any bow ties in it? I just started to watch your series so I haven't seen yet. Thanks for the response though, kudos on your project, truly inspirational and makes me want to start my own lol. However I've owned boats before, never wood, but the adage b.o.a.t "bust out another thousand" made me stick to cars now 😂
Hi Stephen and Alix, Just Subscribed and love what you're doing - Keep up the awesome work! Truly amazing and can't wait to follow your progress. Hope we can keep in touch.
Cheers, BRUPEG Crew
Hey BRUPEG Crew!
Thanks for the kind words! Ya'll are restoring a steel vessel for some expedition style exploring, right? Always great to cross paths with kindred spirits! Best of luck on your journey!
one of the coolest things i've ever seen
Thanks!
Well done
OK you need to do an auction for that peg leg, signed by you both!
LOL
Do you actually think someone would buy it?
Acorn To Arabella I need one!! Smashed my leg up doc says min 6 weeks more likely 12!! 😥😥
Translate it from Portuguese.
@@AcornToArabella you're very welcome. Tell me if you need a passionate crew member.
I live in Bucksport and I came across this video randomly. Never knew about the Maritime Festival.
And another side note my father works at Hinckley yachts in my cousin also works there with him my cousin does the fiberglassing and he has to agree worst part of it. has to do that everyday.
It's such a small town, how did you miss the festival?!?!
That is part of why we are not building a glass boat, we just hate working with the stuff!
Acorn To Arabella I remember hearing about the festival. But I I was out of the town at the time
Wonderful initiative, guys. After watching your video and that of Elon Musk presenting BFR, Mars missions, etc., I realized that I'm under- ambitious. That means you really inspired me. Thanks!
Thanks!HAHAHA! I think Elon and us are in very different categories! But thanks for the ego boost and we are super psyched we provided some inspiration!
Well, it's a matter of scale. I figure you guys match Elon in the boldness category at least, and likely a few more. All the best!
When is the expected ready date for the boat (sailworthy and all)?
2-10 years from now =)
Wow! What an amazing project! I work with someone who said he has given you guys a hand a few times and told me to check out this channel. Can’t wait to binge watch the rest of the uploads later tonight.
Thanks! Who do you work with? We have had quite a few folks stop by and lend a hand so far.
Acorn To Arabella his name is Talon Grace. He said something about a cook out recently and he’s given you guys a hand lifting the keel. He’s been poking fun at my recent interest in sailing and came in the other day excited he could have a conversation with me about something lol. Anyway really cool channel I look forward to catching up on the videos and everything to come in the future. I may even have to come check her out myself one of these days as I’m a western mass guy myself (Huntington). Keep up the good work!
Right on, Talon is a good guy. I know him from the climbing gym. Stop by anytime, Talon can tell you where to find us.
Is the massive crack not an issue ? I’m just learning
There are paper/plastic suits for protection when grinding fiberglass. Or coating yourself in baby powder helps. Petroleum jelly works better but I had rather deal with the itch. Don't scratch or rub you are just working it in. Bath in water with hose spray to get it off.
It was HOT and HUMID! We discussed suits and decided to deal with the itch over heat stroke. We wish we had known about the baby powder trick! Thanks for the tips!
So in a year and a half your built a beam?
I'm looking forward to how you solve the problem of maintaining the eutectic point of the lead in such a large mold cavity!
It might solidify a bit on the bottom when the pour starts but there should be plenty of heat once the mold is partly full that it all congeals back together.
A guy in Australia did a pour and left ingots inside the mold and the hot lead was enough to weld it all together. He had some family issues and had to cut the keel up after pouring and no seams were visible.
We won't put cold ingots in the mold so any solidifying in the bottom should be OK.
The first of your videos that I came across was... pouring the keel video. I assumed you guys did this shit for a living. I had no idea the scope of the project until I saw this video. Amazing fellas. Truly amazing undertaking. Can’t wait to catch up on the videos I’ve missed and watch the rest unfold. All the best. Be sure and sail that motherfucker to Nova Scotia when she’s finished.
This is a respectable form of crazy.
Do you guys have a gofundme or patreon? I believe.
We have a Patreon account.

*totally not a tear in the eye when you restored that beautiful bandsaw*
Glad you enjoyed it. Did you see the two videos chronicling the restoration?
Right? Those old machines were built by a vanished people in a different time
What's with the Che and Lenin posters?
Just some random funny posters I've had kicking around and put up in order to fill in a little wall space.
Hi, nice job, re-store old band saw , I congratulate you for that great work and greetings from Florida. I would like to know where they are located?
Thanks! We are in Western Massachusetts.
👏👏👏👏👏
This is an amazing journey you’ve begun. I like your boat of choice ERIC is my favorite Billy Atkin design but this baby puts Eric to shame (lol) Thisis such a seaworthy, strong design with a ton of interior space. You’ll live like kings under sail. Gaff rig ? I trust you’ve gotten to know Pat Atkin? I built a small Atkin boat several years ago and she was so very nice to correspond with. Haven’t written to her in far too long.Subscribed and look forward to sharing this unique project. Thanks for the videos. I know they’re a lot of work .
She is a beaut for sure! At the Maine Boat Builders Show a chap walked up, studied the plans and said "damn, that's one salty whore" We could not agree more!
Atkin describes her as "ableness personified, equal to any situation and the type of boat that can sail herself in rough weather." Looking forward to experiencing that!
Another gentleman we met at the show circumnavigated on a wooden Ingrid. He told a tale of running the edge of a cyclone near Tonga, strong winds, growing seas, running wing and wing, down wind with the head sails down and just the main and mizzen up and reefed.
He set up the windvane, went below and after a while realized they were off course a few degree. He opened the hatch, pulled the lines to the vane and nothing happened! She did not respond! Turns out he forgot to finish hooking up the vane!
She was running down wind at about hull speed, wing on wing happily reeling off the miles with no one and nothing at the helm.
Seems like Atkin described her perfectly! =)
I love the name Arabella
