As someone had already pointed out, you REALLY want to listen to "The One They Call the Witch" first before this one. It's basically the complete intro of this song
Octopath has some of the best adaptive soundtrack moments EVER. The soundtrack adapts to vamp up what is happening in gameplay for added effect. The prelude to these pieces are written to PERFECTLY loop until the battle kicks in and then it transitions into the main theme SEAMLESSLY. It’s such a cool effect that has to be experienced to be fully understood
Oh man does it. I had all my characters maxed in level and on every job and it took me at least eight tries to beat this boss. When I finally did it was one of my most satisfying gaming wins in a long time. Thing is, I'm not super great at figuring out borked setups for RPGs so I had to do a lot experimentation and the final battle was a long constant state of hanging on by my fingertips. After I finally won I went online to see how other players did it and saw one player nearly waste the boss' second phase in one move. XD
The roughest part is that each attempt requires you to go through that whole gauntlet of other bosses before it, so each time youre easily looking at like 3 or 4 hours of work, unless youre some kind of speedrunner.
I had a decent setup but was underleveled. I know a lot of people who complained about the "grind" in Octopath but I was never one of them - the game provided so many setups to do things at a relatively low level, but when I first reached the final boss I had one group sitting around level 40 and one sitting around 60. This was the only time I had to "grind" and I did about 2-3 hours of grinding to bring everyone up to around 70, and even then it was an incredibly difficult fight. Definitely the most memorable JRPG boss fight I've ever experienced.
Octopath music is fantastic. Absolutely amazing how there are only a few boss themes but they made special transitions for each character theme into each boss theme. Especially notable for themes like Cyrus where it goes from 3/4 to 4/4
The only thing I’d recommend (in case you don’t already know) is to listen to the track “the one they call witch” before this one. It’s basically a two part song and the one they call witch is the first part, has the intro and transitions to “daughter of the dark god.” If this one feels a little incomplete at the start that would be why. So excited to see this reaction vid to this though, I freaking adore octopath and listen to the ost all the time!
Just wanted to bring to your attention 'They who govern reason' another Octopath Traveler Boss theme that plays when getting the secret advanced job classes
While I agree that “The One They Call the Witch” is good to inform/interplay with this piece, I suggest “They Who Govern Reason” for the next wholly new piece from Octopath Traveler. It has big boss energy in a very composed yet threatening way. Would love to hear your take on it. A blast as always!
As much as I do appreciate your breakdown and analysis on this piece, I do want to comment on how swole that Pikachu is in the background. I have no idea where you got that, but it's epic.
Omg its awesome to see you try to sing Daughter of the Dark God! I've always loved this song and also the main theme like you! Hopefully one day we can get a video on the main theme too!
I've joined the channel recently and wondered if you would ever watch Octopath Traveler's OST, especially Daughter of the Dark God, and just wow, you did, and it was as enlightening as ever ! Cheers from France !
I know next to nothing about this game, but I absolutely adore its soundtrack and I've listened to it many times. Besides the really good battle themes, I'm a really big fan of the game's more calm and atmospheric tracks like Flamesgrace, Guiding Light. The strings that come in at around 40 seconds sound so incredibly warm and welcoming and they always manage to get me emotional
I love this song. Galdera is a very hard boss, his 1 phase has 500.000HP and I think his 2 phase has 200.000HP. You have to be at least LV 70 to beat him. Some pro player can beat him at a lower level I believe ( my lowest Level was 69). And you need some luck in the fight to. But a amazing truth final boss ( secret final boss) and a amazing game❤. I have about 380 hours on the game so I LOVE IT Thanks for listening to this track and keep doing amazing Videos ❤💕
The moment I heard this song it instantly became one of my favourite boss themes in games. I thought Bravely Default 2's ost would've had something that would interest me more, but nope this is still way up there. Ba'al from Bravely Default 1 is still high up there with this though, because that song is a trip. Highly recommend you to check it, along with checking some other Ar Tonelico and Ar Nosurge songs at some point.
One of my absolute favorite complete soundtracks, fully orchestrated if I remember correctly. So much love was put into the music and how it all fits into the gameplay. Transitional pieces, pieces that fit a mood, themes that fit the environment so well, and awesome battle and boss themes. Can't ever go wrong with this game
I'm the Ensemble Manager of a video game orchestra and I am so happy to have found your video. I used perform professionally as a Coloratura Soprano and I'm literally arranging and studying this piece to perform. It definitely has a different color and I am glad to know I'm not the only one to catch some of those notes haha. For not warming up you did great haha. Cheers!
I'm sorry if I'm a bit out of place saying this, but I entered to the last video to say that I really like your analysis of every song that you've heard, like the Xenoblade ones or the Fire Emblem. It is obvious that you FEEL the music and not just HEAR it, you catch the intention behind the sheets and all the noises make you inmerse in what you are hearing. I would like you to listen to some of the Dragon Quest songs out there, being one of my favorites "Adventure" and "Heavenly Flight" from Dragon Quest III and "Strange World - Marching Through The Fields" in Dragon Quest VIII. You are an awesome channel that I love to revisit and I hope you keep the good work!
The music in this game is amazing, I’d recommend any of the battle themes (my favourite being “They who govern reason.”) But the area themes are great too! “Town veiled in white” and “Clearbrook, by the pristine waters.” Being my favourites.
God I love Octopath's music to death is just fantastic. The theme against the super class (I forgot what theyre called) bosses omg immaculate but just overall one of my favorite OSTs from all time
I always try to listen to the title themes of video games. I let them linger before I start playing. Octopath Traveler completely sold me on its Title Theme. I believe that it is so important for games to have a great title theme. Think of it like the "cover" of the book you're about to read. And it did not disappoint, every single track is stunning and beautifully crafted. Daughter of the Dark God may not be my personal favourite track but does it still make such a strong impact throughout the entire piece. Yasunori Nikshiki left such a everlasting impression with this song and the entire soundtrack of the game. Thannks for the reaction, Marco! The singer must of had a lot of practice hitting those notes and knowing when they can catch their breath. Those long sustain notes and the fast tempo isn't easy.
It's not the same without hearing Phase 1's theme, The One They Call the Witch, first. It's the slow buildup to this far more dramatic final boss theme lol. Still, glad you enjoyed it! Galdera is one hell of a fight, even if its finale wasn't handled very well (literally a side quest >.>)
Man I searched "octopath opera" to find some tunes from Octopath 2 I had stuck in my head. Wild to see you're the first result on that Marco. Excited to get your thoughts on Octopath 2 when you get to it. What a great series.
Ever since I ran into your analysis of Emil's theme - Sacrifice from Nier Replicant (I sobbed hard during that one as I had just been introduced to his story at the time hgdsfs), I've been kind of binging your videos. The insights you have give me so much life, and I've always wondered how a professionally trained classical/operatic singer would respond to a lot of video game music: your channel is a great answer and I'm loving it! I actually did a small English cover of Daughter of the Dark God, for a fun Songtober project that a group of creatives do every October. (the director of said project wrote his own take of English lyrics based around the context of the boss fight) It's a very fun song, and I hope to get a full cover done one of these days
I remember being somewhat undecided on whether I should buy this game or not but then someone showed me a part of this song. Suddenly I had a copy of the game in my hand...
i'm excited and slightly sad like others because you listen to this first. lol. but it's still good that you enjoy it 😊 also i love hearing your opera voice
There’s another react channel I subscribed to on Patreon JUST to submit this song for him to hear. It hasn’t happened yet, but I’m so excited for when it finally does
Considering how long it took me to get my party grinded up to the point where I could actually properly finish the entire game, not surprised you didnt know this track, youre probably not the only one.
I'd recommend checking out some of the top hits of the Kingdom hearts series, they're known for having an amazing soundtrack with a bunch of really emotional pieces!
Octopath Traveler's music is amazing! I love this game! Personally, I like more The One They Call the Witch than Daughter of the Dark God but one cannot be without the other. Speaking about Octopath, they released a prequel for mobile. The game itself looks good but the problem is the Gacha but the music is top quality.
If you ever have time to watch it you should watch how octopath traveler hypes it's bosses up. It's pretty creative way they mixed the 8 characters themes transitioning into the boss battles.
Haha really awesome to hear you sing in the video. Just amazed me how much the volume was turned down and it was still pretty loud. Just blew me away. The singer in the song sounds very similar to the one in La signora in the second phase. Not sure if it is the same person but would be pretty cool. Also weirdly this song gives me some FF vibes like how La signora also does.
I was so happy when this was uploaded. I just got around to watching this, love the content! And yeah, Octopath is an amazing game. This fight ranks up there in toughest RPG fights though...right up there with Demi-Fiend from SMT (DDS or V, pick your poison.). Galdera kicked my butt many, many times.
For the next time, I recommend you to verify in Octopath which songs use transitions from one theme to another (specially if they have vocals). Taking this song as an example, this is part of a three-part full music, between The One They Call the Witch, Moment of Truth, and finally this one, and they are almost meant to be put together, considering the musical nature of this game. I say this because I wonder, if that game releases one day outside of Japan, there are other final boss-y vocal songs in a spinoff mobile game called "Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent", and from what I understand, they too have transitions.
Honestly love your analysis of the songs, your descriptions are spot on with characters and or what the song is about, it's amazing to see, also love the little "classes" you have in every video thanks for that! Now I have been think of how you would interpret the songs from ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights, especially the bosses intro and outro, it would be interesting, it's a really good ost like many other video game music.
Glad you listened to this. I'm not this far into the game but I'm midway through. It's not an easy game but also insanely fun. You really should listen to some Dragon's Dogma stuff
It's not that old, but this is one of my favorite final boss themes of all time. The way the second phase builds on the theme's of the first and amps the tone up really gets my blood pumping. And what's wild about it is that the way Octopath Traveler works as a game there's a decent chance a lot of the people who played it never even heard this song! Note about the companion pieces: By now it's been pointed out several times that this is the second phase of the final boss theme coming after a brief transition between it and "The One They Call the Witch." I have purchased the official release of the soundtrack which includes this music and the two phases and transition are all considered separate tracks, so three tracks total. I have no idea why SquareEnix did that and honestly it's kind of annoying. Maybe they wanted to avoid having a near 10-minute track on the album? If you're just listening to the album proper it doesn't matter, but I tend to put my favorite tracks into playlists. So it can be a little weird when the songs pop up randomly and not in the "right order." :P
DotDG might be square’s masterpiece as it concerns boss music and that’s high praise for a company known for some of the best music in videogame history
If you want to hear the full version, I’ve mentioned this before, but ruclips.net/video/vwDSnAhLwto/видео.html “For Everything” in the context of this video is the intro for every character, which uses “For X”, where they’re all searching for something, which culminates in “The One That They Call Witch”, which, as noted, is the proper introduction to “Daughter of the Dark God”, as there’s actually an interlude piece in the interim of the boss fight switching phases; Hell, I still haven’t beaten the boss, but it took me 80 hours to even get that far, I’ll get there eventually though!
If I remember correctly, I haven't beaten those super bosses, I was completely destroyed by them. Yet, when I played the game I was feeling very much alike, lonely and feeling ditched by some of my best friends at the time... But the game and especially its' music would make me feel a little better.
This music reminds me of the Dragonsong in Final Fantasy XIV. Breath of Fire 1 and 2 have some interesting music too. Maybe look it up if you do not plan to do a reaction video on them. Retro music from the early years of personal computer gaming is so unique and beautiful to me. Thank you for sharing the video, Marco.
B? I thought the highest vocal note here was an A#... Still, this is truly one piece of final boss opera music, the base with the cello is insane and voice and organ really give the ominous atmosphere with the unison
Now that the sequel is out, you should definitely listen to the sequels final boss themes: Vide the Wicked, Those who hope for the dawn, and Those who deny the dawn! :V
HAve you ever seen Google´s Blob Opera? there are a couple of decent videos in YT using it, but It calls my attention how it reduces a melody to 4 voices, which makes you appreciate certain elements that are easily missed.
Honestly I'd love for you to look at "The Stars High in the Sky" &/or "Morning Light Hymnus" from Granblue Fantasy. I feel like you'd have fun with these
Yea this Fight was a real step up from everything else in the game. Required all characters to be very strong. And you basically had to have some sort of cheese going, and if not you better be level ~75 across the board. Took me 4 tries even with a great team.
I've been looking for it online but can't seem to find it... But who's the singer doing the opera? If she's that skilled, I really feel like she should get more of a shoutout
If you like this one, you'll be happy to know the sequel is not only out, but the final boss theme of THAT game, "Vide the Wicked" followed by "Those Who Deny The Dawn" is (in my opinion) even BETTER than this one! Highly recommend!
I didn't know you could speak French, it's a welcomed surprise tbh. I don't know if you planned to give your expertise about the first part of this theme, "The One they call the Witch" I would really like to hear your opinion. Bonne continuation, vous faites un travail excellent 👍
You were very kind to the singer here. It is a difficult song, and I think the singer sadly flopped it. I could feel my own neck tense up as I listened to her.
@@MarcoMeatball And you delivered well! It was a joy to hear your analysis since it's been so long since I was in operatic training myself. I highly recommend the cover by FamilyJules -- his singer, who doesn't often show classical training (if she has it at all?), makes it sound far closer to what I imagine the composer wanted.
Funny thing: I first listened to this song around the same time as I started training in operatic style (been a choral singer all my life but only recently started opera). I didn’t notice anything bad about it at the time. Now as I’ve grown as a coloratura soprano, I can’t handle that wobbly vibrato on the high notes. I think the folks who covered it (e.g. FamilyJules, Gametal) brought in singers that did a much better job.
Hey since you're a former opera singer, I thought maybe you should give Lilium from the anime Elfen Lied a try. It's a very beautiful song in my opinion.
We need more Video Game Tracks with Opera! Please check "Theme of Alexia Type I & II" from Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles. The Opera Part is really strong here!
As someone had already pointed out, you REALLY want to listen to "The One They Call the Witch" first before this one. It's basically the complete intro of this song
I recommended that when I suggested this to him way back. He probably forgot. Others did as well

Fun fact: unlike any other boss in the game, this one COUNTS on you having broken the game in some way or form.

It also suddenly forces you to level the entire party and not just a good 4 man squad

“For Everything” in the context of this video is the intro for every character, which uses “For X”, where they’re all searching for something, which culminates in “The One That They Call Witch”, which, as noted, is the proper introduction to “Daughter of the Dark God”, as there’s actually an interlude piece in the interim of the boss fight switching phases;
Hell, I still haven’t beaten the boss, but it took me 80 hours to even get that far, I’ll get there eventually though!
Ahh, yes. I was waiting for this one.
Ah thanks for reminding me of this boss. And how it completely destroyed me in game and mentally. Banger theme tho!
B? I thought the highest vocal note here was an A#... Still, this is truly one piece of final boss opera music, the base with the cello is insane and voice and organ really give the ominous atmosphere with the unison
Simply legendary
To think that octopath traveler 2 is already out-
In Octopath 2, this song is arranged in there :)
Imagine having this as your optional boss theme in FFXIV Dawntrail 😊
Now that the sequel is out, you should definitely listen to the sequels final boss themes: Vide the Wicked, Those who hope for the dawn, and Those who deny the dawn! :V
yasunori nishiki's back at it again
I am once again requesting for Homeworld's Adagio for Strings
If you liked this, you're gonna love "Those Who Deny The Dawn" from Octopath Traveler 2 :)
we need to hear you react to Those Who Deny the Dawn from the sequel
You should really check out the cover of this song by Family Jules. It's an excellent cover.
HAve you ever seen Google´s Blob Opera? there are a couple of decent videos in YT using it, but It calls my attention how it reduces a melody to 4 voices, which makes you appreciate certain elements that are easily missed.
No ill check it out!
Honestly I'd love for you to look at "The Stars High in the Sky" &/or "Morning Light Hymnus" from Granblue Fantasy. I feel like you'd have fun with these
I already have for morning light hymnus:)
@@MarcoMeatball well looks like I gotta go back to your vids! Thank you for telling me c:
You should check the theme in yugioh master duel it has lot of cool opera theme :)
you should listen to the monark theme from master dule aka climax theme 4
DUUUDE YOU SHOULD REACT TO "THOSE WHO DENY THE DAWN" FROM OCTOPATH 2
I couldn’t beat this one :’( haha
Yea this Fight was a real step up from everything else in the game. Required all characters to be very strong. And you basically had to have some sort of cheese going, and if not you better be level ~75 across the board. Took me 4 tries even with a great team.
I've been looking for it online but can't seem to find it... But who's the singer doing the opera? If she's that skilled, I really feel like she should get more of a shoutout
I don't know???!
If you like this one, you'll be happy to know the sequel is not only out, but the final boss theme of THAT game, "Vide the Wicked" followed by "Those Who Deny The Dawn" is (in my opinion) even BETTER than this one! Highly recommend!
I would love it when you react to the ost Chandelier from Ace combat 6 some day. It’s completely different from Zero, Unsung war and megalith.
Ya!
I didn't know you could speak French, it's a welcomed surprise tbh.
I don't know if you planned to give your expertise about the first part of this theme, "The One they call the Witch" I would really like to hear your opinion. Bonne continuation, vous faites un travail excellent 👍
Merci merci. Maintenant je ne pas le temps mais pour le future c’est bien sur
Yeeeeees Octopath Traveler, such a fun game! I need to replay it sometime soon
Also
Day thirty-six of recommending Stay Gold from the Arknights OST
You should really check out the music from the halo trilogy.
You were very kind to the singer here. It is a difficult song, and I think the singer sadly flopped it. I could feel my own neck tense up as I listened to her.
It was not good but my objective was to highlight how and why it is done!
Listen to Lord of a Dead Empire from Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia!
Finally!
Hey since you're a former opera singer, I thought maybe you should give Lilium from the anime Elfen Lied a try. It's a very beautiful song in my opinion.
If you like this song, look up FamilyJules cover of this song featuring Adriana Figueroa, it's good stuff
Dunno if this will get buried but it will be absolutely awesome if you react to Nier Automata *a beautiful song*
I think you will love it
Dan. Go to the nier playlist. You will be happy.
Please react Darkeater Midir Dark Souls 3 DLC boss sountrack. Its so best.😊
Soon but not too soon 😂
We need more Video Game Tracks with Opera! Please check "Theme of Alexia Type I & II" from Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles. The Opera Part is really strong here!
