An electric vehicle's power source is the battery which creates an immense carbon footprint to produce for manufacturing of an electric vehicle. Whereas in a gas or diesel vehicle the engine is the power source which is made of mostly steel or aluminum , some brass, some copper and sadly plastic for the covers such as oil pans and valve covers and the intakes. Everything except the plastic is easily recyclable. The plastic on the other hand could be considered hazardous and that problem could be resolved by using aluminum, much like they used to. But because of the fuel mileage requirements they had to make them lighter and plastic seems to be their only option. Carbon pound for carbon pound, it could be said that the gasoline/diesel powered vehicles are more environmentally responsible than the government requirement.

Newest car I have is an 11 and even that is almost too new for me. My Saabs have already paid their carbon debt and still return around 30 mpg on the highway. These people need to be removed from office and live in the real world for a while.

My car is almost 20y/o and from experience, some spare parts are being manufactured to lower than necessary standard so it'll require more frequent repairs, thus reducing usability in general, so either way there's not really a way to avoid this. Unfortunately due to the nature of things in today's day and age and the way things are going, we're gonna have to Frankenstein older vehicles just to keep them going, cuz from my experience, the newer stuff are 💩 I can drive my car all day and have fun driving it, but the new vehicle I've been issued for work as replacement for the older one is annoying me even more, gives me less options for control, and has just been a headache after the next for the past month and a few

The OEMs realize they’ve built far too many EVs and that the consumers don’t want them, but that doesn’t change the fact that the law is still requiring them to sell EVs and that they still advertise EVs relentlessly. The EPA going after aftermarket parts suppliers because they sell parts that make cars run cleaner is ludicrous. Not even 20 years ago ethanol was considered an 'Alt fuel' but then they realized we can make it ourselves. Now its a bad fuel, and all ICE engines need to be banned. The EPA is acting like the ATF making up rules and treating them like laws. Its beyond their mandate, but they do it anyway, with impunity. On the bright side SEMA actively works to protect us from bad legislation. It is far more environmentally friendly to rebuild an old car than it is to produce a new one. An EV is even worse due to mining and the less recyclable nature of the components, and the much shorter lifespan of those parts. The goal is obvious, to prevent us from travelling outside their view. The fact we can build vehicles ourselves and power them with home made fuels that are actually cleaner than what they want us to use, and they want to outlaw us doing it says all you need to know.

Those rules have already been talked about. By 2033 they want all buildings in the EU to be energy class D or better. If your house cannot reach that level, you will no longer be allowed to sell it. Probably hard to find good (or any) junk yards in Canada for the same reason as in the US: Chinese companies have been buying them up to get parts that are remanufactured and sold into the parts supply chain.

As a professional auto electrician and mechanic a can confirm this has been in process for the last 10 years or so atleast, if not longer. Getting hold of simple fuse info or wiring diagrams for many vehicles is now almost impossible in many cases. I have paid subscriptions to technical info providers such as Alldata and even they cant provide me with over half the info i need. I have a video on this myself. With the influx of highly electronic systems which are guaranteed to fail within a certain amount of time, there is very little chance of anyone (garages, mechanics etc) being able to fix complex issues, even the main dealers struggle at times. I would say this started when the OBD ports were added in 1998, many garages started to struggle from then up until today. More and more old school garages and mechanics have packed up or are ready to. Thanks for the great videos and entertainment.
I had the same problem, I wasn’t able to find any info for newer cars from 2010s only how to replace the part, and to compare my 90s Lexus had so much detail in the repair manual that I can literally build one
@maxfolio940 that's just the engine, and ecu's are easily replaced with second hand units or repaired, most vehicles are just rolling computer networks, many with multiple networks, and up to around 50 control modules in some fully loaded high end vehicles, 1 for every system on the car almost, then all the sensors, actuators etc.

@@adamautomotive Only until they introduce software licences based on the hardware ID's of all parts in the "new type" ECU's - John Deere did that so only an approved service centre could swap any parts as only they could request an updated licence based on the new overall hardware ID. Thankfully people hacked that era of ECU's but sadly the newer era are embedded windows or linux based and the licencing can't be hacked due to heavy encryption. Oh and even if you swapped the official ECU with a standard one, it still wouldn't work as the parts are all chipped. The hack that was made modified or exploited a "left-in" mode in the firmware on the official ECU and put all parts into a mode where licencing could be ignored and if I remember correctly, zeroed out and disabled the checks in the chips of all critical parts.

That is insane. It's not good for the environment either because it forces people to produce more new cars. They already did this to home heating systems in Germany where you can't do certain repairs anymore. If they also do this to cars there will be no way for anyone of the lower classes to keep surviving in Germany. People often only barely get by as it is , if you force them to buy new cars they have no choice but to stop working altogether and to move into the city so they can walk to the grocery store. A lot of elderly people will basically be forced to surrender their life to the state as well. Because they need cars to buy food or leave the village and go to town or work, naturally few people can take on massive debt to buy a new car. Every old car will eventually need the brakes done it's not even a costly repair. Not to mention that age is no indicator of fuel consumption. Many new cars get very similar figures as old ones. Most differences only exist on paper but not in real world driving conditions. Considering the very extreme fuel prices anyone who can afford to do so already buys the best vehicle they can get, those who buy gas guzzlers are rich people who won't be affected by the regulation anyway.

As a resident of Spain I can confirm that the vast majority of vehicles are old ones, mine included. There’ll be trouble on the streets if such policies are introduced. Like the French the Spanish will occupy the streets in their millions. Having said that, however, there is a war on ICEs heading our way.

New car buying rapidly declined among regular people after the 2008 financial crisis, and most newer vehicles are belonging to companies, as regular people aren't really able to afford buying these incredibly expensive new cars. '90s cars are still regular daily drivers here, and even '80s cars are not such a rare sight. Personally I have a 40 year old Trabant, and a 19 year old Lancer Wagon. I'm gonna cling onto them to the very end...

I´m currently reading parts of the directive and thus far i can say it only gives very rough guidelines on things, mostly aiming to prevent the export of unroadworthy, enviroment-endangering, as well as scrap vehicles to non-EU countries to prevent them from just disappearing and being disposed of illegally. Most of this all also doesn´t apply to historical vehicles (so 30+ years old, not in production anymore and in a roadworthy, decent state), so you can all relax a bit lads.
I wish nordic EU countries would have as much people and courage as Spain and France, if goverment does something stupid the streets should be full of angry mob. Instead for example in Finland there has been many huge taxes placed on cars and people just complain about that in media. Imagine paying almost 1000 euros a year just to drive a diesel car. Thats just only the vehicle tax, then add up insurance and cost of gasoline (wich is really horribly priced)

I saw this somewhere else. So I looked up the directive. It doesn’t say this at all. It is a directive designed to stop scrapped cars being exported. That is all. There is a specific exclusion for classic cars as are your rights to keep and fix a car that is uneconomic to repair. I’ll repeat, this is to stop cars that are scrapped from being exported to unregulated markets.

a fun thought that popped in my head during this video. where you read "the car needs to be scrapped if it's repair cost exceeds the car value" well, it may exceed the car value, but it is usually cheaper than a brand new car much smaller fault repair cost.

If what you are talking about is 'market value' that's also subjective dependent on multiple factors. Also, my point to add context is that something may be emotionally valuable or simply irreplaceable. For example here in Australia I drive a Holden v8 utility. There is not a manufacturer on planet earth even making vehicles remotely similar to to these and therefore myself and most other drivers of these have a perceived increased value on these particular vehicles which differs greatly from any subjectjective 'market value' an insurer or independent body may put on it.
I've said for a while now that the powers at be don't want the general public on the road, we are heading back to the 1920's where only the rich and privileged have their own transport, the rest of us will be on public transport, cycles or on foot, ideally doffing our caps as they motor by. Good morning Geoff, I absolutely agree, the motoring organisations are not showing any support for motorists. Not in the ludicrous push to EVs, the madness of LTNs or indeed the faux air pollution charges to drive in parts of the country. My 17 year old LandRover Freelander2 has fortunately avoided the London ULEZ costs so far, as its petrol, (however I do have to pay a fortune for insurance). This proposed new attack on older vehicles in the EU for now, is just another facet of the drive to abolish personal car ownership and I for one am sick of it. ALL motorists need to wake up before it’s too late!

What motoring organisations? RAC & AA stopped representing motorists decades ago. There are some small ones, but they have not gained much traction other than Fair Fuel who have lobbied very successfully on limiting fuel duty increases.

This is the de-facto case in Australia already. Insurance often classifies lightly crashed vehicles as unrepairable, which means that even if I buy it and do the repairs myself it can never be registered again. The category is "non-repairable write-off" which more often means "economic write-off" and many very viable cars are lost through this utter stupidity. The only way to find a bargain to repair now is to dig around for crash damaged vehicles that were uninsured when an accident occurred. Values of older rust buckets have therefore gone through the roof as keen motorists scramble to find a car worth driving that isn't full of plastic and electronics.
Actually the "unrepairable" cars being written of is a scam... In reality the cars is sold to repair shops that fix the cars and put them back on the road again for good profit (that is at least how it works her in Europe).

It was a documentary on norwegian tv where they looked at scrapped electric cars and what kind of damage they had, alot of them had just a slight dent under the car where the battery is. Mechanics was not allowed to repair them, the whole car goes to the junkyard and there is not allowed to take parts from this car to repair another car, even if the part is not damaged in any way. I don`t understand how this can be better, the insurance should be ridiculous high, I guess everyone whith a old sturdy car chips in...
Hi, Swedish person here, this is not true, parts are definitely taken away from them, and people do work and repair them. Have seen it done first-hand both here in Sweden and in Norway. If you look at any used-parts website you will find plenty of used parts from old electric cars as well, which you can see with a simple Google search. Have no idea why this comment got so many likes but I think it speaks volumes about how well-educated this audience is around electric vehicles. I do think that if you're going to critizise something then you should at least do so with good reason.

I also own a 25 year old mega reliable ultra luxury 200,000 mile beautiful Lexus 300gs. All 3 in excellent condition. A while ago there were rumours about home ownership. Went something along the lines of homes being seized etc by means of having forced repairs/upkeep stipulations, and if owners do not comply, eg high expense, then the home could be forfeit. Forced to give it up. Can't sell it either because it's failed its MoT, etc, and presumably can't live in condemned property even if it might just need double glazing. This attack on cars seems to go a way to enforce the rumours that sooner or later property ownership could be challenged. People themselves might not escape as they/we may be subject to a personal points system, a sort of personal MoT. Access to people's bank accounts means your wealth and availability can be controlled remotely. (Look at the post office!). Spain has six monthly MOTs for vehicles over a certain age. Also, IIRC, for many years Spain has banned the sale or reconditioning, of old marine engines. I'm sure people do it, but it has meant that it's become hard to get parts for them. Some European countries (Germany is one) have limited use "Classic plates" for older cars. In Malta in order to get a cheap classic plate the car has to be completely original. In Greece you can't reregister an old car once it's road tax has run out and not been renewed. None of this is really about green issues. It's about subsidising big manufacturers at the expense of small repair businesses. IMO it's essentially about removing the ability of individuals to be independent and self reliant.
Nice to find a based car channel. My wife and I both drive old Volvo 240s. The purest form of environmental preservation is to keep your old "junk" on the road. Production of new automobiles is the least eco-friendly part of the process.
people go on and on about the huge amount of carbon and energy that it makes to make things, but then completely discount that subject when they attack old products that people keep running and using as opposed to producing more and more emissions constantly buying new and "efficient" products every few years. Sure an old and out dated car is more polluting than a new car, but overall how many people daily cars above 20-40 years old? Not many. And the bulk of their emmisions was produced decades ago. its broken even or still not produced more emission's than what it took to build due to it being used left or someone preserving it as a fun car. Let alone having had the owner modified it and updated the engine and whatnot. Besides. Stuff like Washing machines and other appliances in homes may be more efficient, but they dont last that long now and in some cases perform worse than the old ones. Dryers in particular suck ass now. Ive had to dry some loads 2 or 3 times to dry them completely, but growing up in the 90s and early 2000s. My parents old dryer dried it in one go because it produced a lot of heat. It would heat up the laundry room a bit, but I had dry clothes in one go. not 2 or 3 attempts at 20-30 minutes a try.

Time to wake up to these deceptions before it's too late.
I would love a Fleet of old cars. I would love be happy(ish) to modify them to make them more environmentally friendly. There isn't much stopping the industry making a universal catalytic converter for pre cat cars or the diesel exhaust recirculation system. Both won't be perfect but are a help.

No, it is the farmers who have to disappear and also the cars that are older than 15 years. So in a few years, many people will no longer own a car because they cannot afford an expensive electric car. What about people needing a car for work or to go to work every day?
I have a 25 year old camper. Well maintained with just little bits done here and there. So no major repairs just maintained. It's in lovely condition with just 118,000 on the clock. Loads of life left in it. And many happy times.

And I also don't really want to either. One of our cars has 408000 KM on the odometer, and I want to make it as high as I can while keeping the car in peak condition.

I collect and drive old SAABs, and use 20-year-old SAAB 9-3 as a daily driver. The last time I was to CT (I think it’s called MOT on the other side of the channel) the technician was amazed. He literally said “This car is in better condition and runs cleaner than any 3-year-old Renault I have seen lately”. And I run it on E85 so it is even more “ecological”. Two weeks ago, my sister was driving my SAAB and get into really serious incident without ANY injuries (unlike the people from the other cars). After 300 euros in parts and two week-ends of work my SAAB is back on the road, the other two cars (Peugeot and Citroen) have to be scrapped. So, the EU can take my SAABs only over my dead body!

There are adhesives that when set form a bond stronger than can be stronger than the steel around it. Regulation didn't say anything about gluing it back.
Take no notice, just look after your existing cars properly, keep them serviced well and rustproof where possible, if it needs fixing just fix the bloody thing and say nothing, don't tell 'em Pike. More people need to learn the meaning of and use the word NO.
@@oliabid-price4517 Spot on. Its surprising how good regular self servicing and rustproofing can make actual repairs less likely. Engines transmissions drive shafts wheel bearings etc treated to regular fresh oil and grease don't wear out, road springs coated in ACF50 or simiilar don't rust so don't snap so easily, greased steel brake lines don't rust out, regularly serviced brake calipers don't seize. Throw in some mechanical sympathy, ie warm and cool routines for turbochargerd engines, going gently over road calming lump and pot holes, all these things add up to vehicles lasting many years, and the new self appointed apparatchiks being unhappy.
@@silverdale3207 Do what I did, after some lady wrecked my bike, it was repairable, but the insurance wrote it off. I purchased it back and repaired it, but initially, I couldn't get it back on the road because I could not find one of the engine casings anywhere to purchase. I waited patiently and finally got one and she's fullr rebuilt now...but the whole ordeal left me with some sorta fear of the same thing happening again. Long story short, other than a frame and rear suspension, I ended up with enough spare parts to build another of the same bike, in many cases multiple parts that are harder to get, so this thing can have about 8 more crashes before I'm out of luck! She's pretty much unkillable. Any parts you think may be tricky to get a bit further down the road, worth having a spare lying around.
In the US the catalytic converter theft was getting so bad that certain models were becoming "Totalled" by the fact that the cat would cost 3x what the car was worth. In most major cities (where the thieves are) emissions tests are required to register your car. When one of my clients would get their cat stolen, I would weld a pipe in, put a spacer under the downstream 02S, then basically tell them to drive the car with expired tags. Registration tickets don't give you points, just a fine. You could get 50+ registration tickets before exceeding the cost of a catalytic converter.
Won't work in my area. Unregistered car is illegal on public roads. They get towed to impound lots. Mega bucks in charges and it won't be released until registered. And then you have two weeks to get emission clearance.
Catalytic converters were a short-term solution which should have been replaced 30 or so years ago. They were meant to reduce emissions until more efficient engines could be built, or cleaner-burning fuels. But the automakers got lazy and didn't want to spend the time and money to develop something better.
The problem isn't that they want us to drive less poluting vehicles, it's the fact that they are completely oblivous to the fact that most people cannot afford the electric car as it is - they have no resale value, their batteries degrade until you need a new battery pack (which costs more then an engine and transmission refit on an ICE car) and all of this happens over a much, much shorter period of time (~8 to 10 years). It shows that lawmakers are completely unaware of the reality that very few people actually have the means to afford new cars, and that the general population trends to buying second hand vehicles to get around. And while I see some exclusionary clauses being added for "classic vehicles" and other hairloom type cars, this doesn't cover the amount of old golfs, focuses and corsas who are simply the only thing a single mother of two can afford to drive around. It's a classic tale of "Banning something without providing an adequate replacement". We've had this before when the EU banned incandacent light bulbs before LED lighting was ready for the mass market, forcing everyone into this weird carcinogenic intermediate period of mercury filled shitty energy saving bulbs. Nowadays, we don't really miss those incandacent bulbs because let's face it, LEDs are simply better. But this point where electric cars are "simply better" in all regards, especially second hand "beater market" prices is very far in the future. ICE cars got cheaper because they lost their cool, their styling was outdated, amenities such as AC would fail and they would become less comfortable. None of these price degrading aspects affected the function of the car - it still got you from A to B, used the same amount of fuel (roughly) as it did when it left the factory, and thus filled the transportation niche for those that simply needed to get around, no frills and thrills. I hope they revise this law and simply enforce updates on these cars, such as "engine replacements" requiring more modern engines to be fitted if they are done and mandatory retrofits to exhaust systems to reduce emissions. That would be a sensible and somewhat cost effective intermediate that allows you to still move your old car around, but also reducing the negative sideeffects of said vehicle.
Back in the '90s, when Germany had the presidency of the EU, they brought in legislation to kill off vehicle scrapyards. Scrapyards had to be concreted and ALL fluids drained from the vehicles. The costs of concreting alone closed many scrapyards. Germany, if I remember correctly had 'patent part approval'. Motorists had to get parts from the manufacturers - there were no motor factors or scrapyards. Again, this was all done under the 'environmental' banner! Why do I envision my '96 Toyota 4x4 ending up looking like something out of a Mad Max movie?
My daily driver is a Toyota Hilux surf,1992 model. AVE.32mpg. I also have an Alfa 916 spider, 1996 model. Both run as they should with emissions well within regulations. Why should I change for something less reliable?

In the 1950’s manufacturers of washers dryers vacuum cleaners etc made their items too good. They never broke. This was bad for the economy so US law ordered them to make it more inferior. Since then your appliance won’t last more than 2-7 years.
I got a "hand me down" refrigerator from a friend that took care of a 6,000 unit apartment complex when I bought my house 28 years ago and it still works great. He was told to replace ALL of the appliances because management thought they would fail. Who do you think paid for those replacements? Yep, the tenants. My gain. The only expense for me was electricity to operate the 'frige.
I saw a report that Tesla sold one car in South Korea in January of this year. Yes 1 as in one. EV sales have slumped by 80% now that they know they are useless in cold weather. It has been down to -16C or more in Korea recently.
Not an ev advocate but living in Norway where it gets alot colder than -16 and there is no country in the world with more EV´s than here and its going fine. Newer diesels are the biggest problem in the cold because of overcomplicated emmission systems and biodiesel mixed into regular causing fuel filters to clog up in cold weather.

So you can get to work but not get home unless you do a full charge. Costing you more money. None of this exists in a petrol world and needs no extra planning or anxiety.
Rather than the cold I think it's because the people that would have bought an ev already did. Those things are too expensive for the regular consumer unless you want to go into debt for a car.
I recall reading somewhere that cars will also be deemed illegal if they have ANY kind of modification whatsoever. The slightest thing that wasn't factory fitted and it'll be a goner.
I believe this was attempted by the EU some years ago but wasn’t passed as it would’ve put a huge amount of people out of work . The custom car world for instance would have been affected plus anyone fitting pattern parts. I guess they’re trying again .
I really don't understand the logic behind removing low volume old or enthusiast cars when the population is miniscule relative to the wider automotive world, and the effects negligible. You bring up good points regarding the emissions of these older cars vs building and buying newer cars so frequently. Sorry you guys across the pond have to deal with this. The logic is that you get roped into having a smart car, which can only be repaired at a dealership. Modern vehicle manufacturers REALLY want people to stop working on their own cars. The government and automotive manufacturers are very good friends with mutual interests. There is on no plan to remove old cars from the roads, Geoff vastly misrepresents the point of the planed directive. The directive is not about what you are allowed to repair but what happens to cars that are considered no longer repairable (essential parts are no longer available, the car frame is warped). One goal is that junkers don't get exported to non-EU countries / regions, so that cars really do get recycled at the end of their life and not rot on the wayside in Africa. If you want a comparison replace the word car with plastic, the EU has a problem with plastic trash getting exported to 3rd countries for "recycling" where the plastic just gets dumped into the water in the end. It's not about you really liking that one plastic bottle and the EU wants to force you to throw it away.
Some of the terrible roads did a number on my control arms on my old Celica. I replaced them and other components on the underside essentials returning it to a brand new car at the rear. I then did the front end. Yes the cost could be argued to be more than the car is worth... but now i have an old celica that is brand new on the suspension. And it rides like new. I would fight anyone who claimed it was due for the scrap yard because of a few bolt on parts.

If nobody buy the ev and insurance refuse to insure and cars are unusable because no infrastructure, the sell will stop and manufacturer will bankrupt and the gov with it as well. Then ICE would come back easily with import first and fast gas station creation. Ev will be banned except if they resolve all the issue and do: - no lithium battery - very small less than 30 cm battery exchangeable in any shop - resistant to fire and water. Can be put in these environments for 5 minutes. - no politisons from extraction of the materials - highly recyclable - same size battery for all cars of all manufacturer - low cost at nearly every shop (1000$ or less) - exchangeable on the road by delivery in case of fsilure. -backup battery in the trunk. -battery instal in the high part of the vehicle and not underneath for safety and resistant to flood -battery removable for people living in building with no access to recharge.
It's about complete and utter control of every inch of our lives. I cannot imagine all the old cars gone from our streets forever. It's as if we dont have a choice in any aspect of our lives.
I believe that this process as started more than several years ago by the EU administrators. they didn't want plebs like us fixing our on vehicles. It used to be the case that if your car didn't start, you checked battery, points plugs ect. Now the first thing you have to pick up is the plug in analyser. Saab as one of the first vehicles to have these sorts of intricacies. If you called the breakdown services out to a Saab, they used to just tow it to the dealership. I agree with the previous comments. why are we still listening to the EU, tell them to get stuffed and to all you Motor factors, sell your parts to the Brits.
Yeah that's my read of it so far. If you've been in an accident / the car got damaged somehow you're scr3wed... (unless you can do the repair by yourself - but they're like aiming to leverage oversight processes to register damage) To me other scenario's are already covered under regular economics and depreciation due to high costs to repair

The insurance companies are already writing cars off for very little now. I just bought a car from the scrap yard & it cost £500 to fix. The car is worth £5k ish so the insurance companies are being irresponsible with shareholders cash because £500 is waaay cheaper than £5k
My Audi has had no welding done in its 30 years of life, and does not look like it will need any for a long time yet. If they cant get them off the road for one reason, I'm sure they will find some excuse in the not too distant future.
It is amazing how much Audi has improved its rust protection. The Audi 80 and Audi 100 from the late 60s and early 70s were right up there with Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Moskvich for galloping rust. Not only have they fixed the problem but they have managed to live down the reputation.

An electric vehicle's power source is the battery which creates an immense carbon footprint to produce for manufacturing of an electric vehicle. Whereas in a gas or diesel vehicle the engine is the power source which is made of mostly steel or aluminum , some brass, some copper and sadly plastic for the covers such as oil pans and valve covers and the intakes. Everything except the plastic is easily recyclable. The plastic on the other hand could be considered hazardous and that problem could be resolved by using aluminum, much like they used to. But because of the fuel mileage requirements they had to make them lighter and plastic seems to be their only option. Carbon pound for carbon pound, it could be said that the gasoline/diesel powered vehicles are more environmentally responsible than the government requirement.

For me its 7 years - but that was so that the biggest part of depreciation had happened and there was plenty of life in the vehicle for high mileage use for work.

My car is almost 20y/o and from experience, some spare parts are being manufactured to lower than necessary standard so it'll require more frequent repairs, thus reducing usability in general, so either way there's not really a way to avoid this. Unfortunately due to the nature of things in today's day and age and the way things are going, we're gonna have to Frankenstein older vehicles just to keep them going, cuz from my experience, the newer stuff are 💩 I can drive my car all day and have fun driving it, but the new vehicle I've been issued for work as replacement for the older one is annoying me even more, gives me less options for control, and has just been a headache after the next for the past month and a few

I'm so glad we have SEMA in the states lobbying for car enthusiast interests. That is a real shame that your government would propose such a ridiculous, wasteful, impractical measure. But not surprising because this day and age, nobody can hold these lawmakers accountable, and they don't have to play by the same rules we do.
The EPA going after aftermarket parts suppliers because they sell parts that make cars run cleaner is ludicrous. Not even 20 years ago ethanol was considered an 'Alt fuel' but then they realized we can make it ourselves. Now its a bad fuel, and all ICE engines need to be banned.
The EPA is acting like the ATF making up rules and treating them like laws. Its beyond their mandate, but they do it anyway, with impunity. On the bright side SEMA actively works to protect us from bad legislation.
It is far more environmentally friendly to rebuild an old car than it is to produce a new one. An EV is even worse due to mining and the less recyclable nature of the components, and the much shorter lifespan of those parts.
The goal is obvious, to prevent us from travelling outside their view. The fact we can build vehicles ourselves and power them with home made fuels that are actually cleaner than what they want us to use, and they want to outlaw us doing it says all you need to know.

Those rules have already been talked about. By 2033 they want all buildings in the EU to be energy class D or better. If your house cannot reach that level, you will no longer be allowed to sell it. As a professional auto electrician and mechanic a can confirm this has been in process for the last 10 years or so atleast, if not longer. Getting hold of simple fuse info or wiring diagrams for many vehicles is now almost impossible in many cases. I have paid subscriptions to technical info providers such as Alldata and even they cant provide me with over half the info i need. I have a video on this myself. With the influx of highly electronic systems which are guaranteed to fail within a certain amount of time, there is very little chance of anyone (garages, mechanics etc) being able to fix complex issues, even the main dealers struggle at times. I would say this started when the OBD ports were added in 1998, many garages started to struggle from then up until today. More and more old school garages and mechanics have packed up or are ready to. Thanks for the great videos and entertainment.

I had the same problem, I wasn’t able to find any info for newer cars from 2010s only how to replace the part, and to compare my 90s Lexus had so much detail in the repair manual that I can literally build one
@maxfolio940 that's just the engine, and ecu's are easily replaced with second hand units or repaired, most vehicles are just rolling computer networks, many with multiple networks, and up to around 50 control modules in some fully loaded high end vehicles, 1 for every system on the car almost, then all the sensors, actuators etc.
@1a1_sc400 Yes, exactly very true. Not that you would ever need a repair manual for a 90's Lexus! I don't think I've diagnosed or worked on any, i have on a handful of the modern hybrids, though, a couple at most.
@@adamautomotive Only until they introduce software licences based on the hardware ID's of all parts in the "new type" ECU's - John Deere did that so only an approved service centre could swap any parts as only they could request an updated licence based on the new overall hardware ID. Thankfully people hacked that era of ECU's but sadly the newer era are embedded windows or linux based and the licencing can't be hacked due to heavy encryption. Oh and even if you swapped the official ECU with a standard one, it still wouldn't work as the parts are all chipped. The hack that was made modified or exploited a "left-in" mode in the firmware on the official ECU and put all parts into a mode where licencing could be ignored and if I remember correctly, zeroed out and disabled the checks in the chips of all critical parts.

That is insane. It's not good for the environment either because it forces people to produce more new cars. They already did this to home heating systems in Germany where you can't do certain repairs anymore. If they also do this to cars there will be no way for anyone of the lower classes to keep surviving in Germany. People often only barely get by as it is , if you force them to buy new cars they have no choice but to stop working altogether and to move into the city so they can walk to the grocery store. A lot of elderly people will basically be forced to surrender their life to the state as well. Because they need cars to buy food or leave the village and go to town or work, naturally few people can take on massive debt to buy a new car. Every old car will eventually need the brakes done it's not even a costly repair. Not to mention that age is no indicator of fuel consumption. Many new cars get very similar figures as old ones. Most differences only exist on paper but not in real world driving conditions. Considering the very extreme fuel prices anyone who can afford to do so already buys the best vehicle they can get, those who buy gas guzzlers are rich people who won't be affected by the regulation anyway.

As a resident of Spain I can confirm that the vast majority of vehicles are old ones, mine included. There’ll be trouble on the streets if such policies are introduced. Like the French the Spanish will occupy the streets in their millions. Having said that, however, there is a war on ICEs heading our way.
Hungary also. New car buying rapidly declined among regular people after the 2008 financial crisis, and most newer vehicles are belonging to companies, as regular people aren't really able to afford buying these incredibly expensive new cars.
'90s cars are still regular daily drivers here, and even '80s cars are not such a rare sight. Personally I have a 40 year old Trabant, and a 19 year old Lancer Wagon. I'm gonna cling onto them to the very end...

I´m currently reading parts of the directive and thus far i can say it only gives very rough guidelines on things, mostly aiming to prevent the export of unroadworthy, enviroment-endangering, as well as scrap vehicles to non-EU countries to prevent them from just disappearing and being disposed of illegally. Most of this all also doesn´t apply to historical vehicles (so 30+ years old, not in production anymore and in a roadworthy, decent state), so you can all relax a bit lads.
I wish nordic EU countries would have as much people and courage as Spain and France, if goverment does something stupid the streets should be full of angry mob. Instead for example in Finland there has been many huge taxes placed on cars and people just complain about that in media. Imagine paying almost 1000 euros a year just to drive a diesel car. Thats just only the vehicle tax, then add up insurance and cost of gasoline (wich is really horribly priced)

If what you are talking about is 'market value' that's also subjective dependent on multiple factors. Also, my point to add context is that something may be emotionally valuable or simply irreplaceable. For example here in Australia I drive a Holden v8 utility. There is not a manufacturer on planet earth even making vehicles remotely similar to to these and therefore myself and most other drivers of these have a perceived increased value on these particular vehicles which differs greatly from any subjectjective 'market value' an insurer or independent body may put on it.

Good morning Geoff, I absolutely agree, the motoring organisations are not showing any support for motorists. Not in the ludicrous push to EVs, the madness of LTNs or indeed the faux air pollution charges to drive in parts of the country. My 17 year old LandRover Freelander2 has fortunately avoided the London ULEZ costs so far, as its petrol, (however I do have to pay a fortune for insurance). This proposed new attack on older vehicles in the EU for now, is just another facet of the drive to abolish personal car ownership and I for one am sick of it. ALL motorists need to wake up before it’s too late!

What motoring organisations? RAC & AA stopped representing motorists decades ago. There are some small ones, but they have not gained much traction other than Fair Fuel who have lobbied very successfully on limiting fuel duty increases.

This is the de-facto case in Australia already. Insurance often classifies lightly crashed vehicles as unrepairable, which means that even if I buy it and do the repairs myself it can never be registered again. The category is "non-repairable write-off" which more often means "economic write-off" and many very viable cars are lost through this utter stupidity. The only way to find a bargain to repair now is to dig around for crash damaged vehicles that were uninsured when an accident occurred. Values of older rust buckets have therefore gone through the roof as keen motorists scramble to find a car worth driving that isn't full of plastic and electronics.
Actually the "unrepairable" cars being written of is a scam... In reality the cars is sold to repair shops that fix the cars and put them back on the road again for good profit (that is at least how it works her in Europe).
So this angle is controlled by the Insurance Industry not by Government. They are a totally independent entity outside of the democratic process. At least with Governments you can vote them out

It was a documentary on norwegian tv where they looked at scrapped electric cars and what kind of damage they had, alot of them had just a slight dent under the car where the battery is. Mechanics was not allowed to repair them, the whole car goes to the junkyard and there is not allowed to take parts from this car to repair another car, even if the part is not damaged in any way.
I don`t understand how this can be better, the insurance should be ridiculous high, I guess everyone whith a old sturdy car chips in...
Hi, Swedish person here, this is not true, parts are definitely taken away from them, and people do work and repair them. Have seen it done first-hand both here in Sweden and in Norway. If you look at any used-parts website you will find plenty of used parts from old electric cars as well, which you can see with a simple Google search.
Have no idea why this comment got so many likes but I think it speaks volumes about how well-educated this audience is around electric vehicles. I do think that if you're going to critizise something then you should at least do so with good reason.

A while ago there were rumours about home ownership. Went something along the lines of homes being seized etc by means of having forced repairs/upkeep stipulations, and if owners do not comply, eg high expense, then the home could be forfeit. Forced to give it up. Can't sell it either because it's failed its MoT, etc, and presumably can't live in condemned property even if it might just need double glazing.
This attack on cars seems to go a way to enforce the rumours that sooner or later property ownership could be challenged.
People themselves might not escape as they/we may be subject to a personal points system, a sort of personal MoT. Access to people's bank accounts means your wealth and availability can be controlled remotely. (Look at the post office!). Drop a piece of paper and you could be financially punished/inconvenienced etc.

Spain has six monthly MOTs for vehicles over a certain age.
Also, IIRC, for many years Spain has banned the sale or reconditioning, of old marine engines.
I'm sure people do it, but it has meant that it's become hard to get parts for them.
Some European countries (Germany is one) have limited use "Classic plates" for older cars.
In Malta in order to get a cheap classic plate the car has to be completely original.
In Greece you can't reregister an old car once it's road tax has run out and not been renewed.
None of this is really about green issues. It's about subsidising big manufacturers at the expense of small repair businesses.
IMO it's essentially about removing the ability of individuals to be independent and self reliant.
It's about making our life difficult. That is the aim.
Nice to find a based car channel. My wife and I both drive old Volvo 240s. The purest form of environmental preservation is to keep your old "junk" on the road. Production of new automobiles is the least eco-friendly part of the process.
people go on and on about the huge amount of carbon and energy that it makes to make things, but then completely discount that subject when they attack old products that people keep running and using as opposed to producing more and more emissions constantly buying new and "efficient" products every few years. Sure an old and out dated car is more polluting than a new car, but overall how many people daily cars above 20-40 years old? Not many. And the bulk of their emmisions was produced decades ago. its broken even or still not produced more emission's than what it took to build due to it being used left or someone preserving it as a fun car. Let alone having had the owner modified it and updated the engine and whatnot.
Besides. Stuff like Washing machines and other appliances in homes may be more efficient, but they dont last that long now and in some cases perform worse than the old ones. Dryers in particular suck ass now. Ive had to dry some loads 2 or 3 times to dry them completely, but growing up in the 90s and early 2000s. My parents old dryer dried it in one go because it produced a lot of heat. It would heat up the laundry room a bit, but I had dry clothes in one go. not 2 or 3 attempts at 20-30 minutes a try.

There isn't much stopping the industry making a universal catalytic converter for pre cat cars or the diesel exhaust recirculation system. Both won't be perfect but are a help.

I have a 25 year old camper. Well maintained with just little bits done here and there. So no major repairs just maintained. It's in lovely condition with just 118,000 on the clock. Loads of life left in it. And many happy times.

I collect and drive old SAABs, and use 20-year-old SAAB 9-3 as a daily driver. The last time I was to CT (I think it’s called MOT on the other side of the channel) the technician was amazed. He literally said “This car is in better condition and runs cleaner than any 3-year-old Renault I have seen lately”. And I run it on E85 so it is even more “ecological”.
Two weeks ago, my sister was driving my SAAB and get into really serious incident without ANY injuries (unlike the people from the other cars). After 300 euros in parts and two week-ends of work my SAAB is back on the road, the other two cars (Peugeot and Citroen) have to be scrapped.
So, the EU can take my SAABs only over my dead body!

The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) are very active on this sort of thing. They're in the anti ULEZ groups and are aware of the EU legislation.

There are adhesives that when set form a bond stronger than can be stronger than the steel around it. Regulation didn't say anything about gluing it back.
Take no notice, just look after your existing cars properly, keep them serviced well and rustproof where possible, if it needs fixing just fix the bloody thing and say nothing, don't tell 'em Pike.

Engines transmissions drive shafts wheel bearings etc treated to regular fresh oil and grease don't wear out, road springs coated in ACF50 or simiilar don't rust so don't snap so easily, greased steel brake lines don't rust out, regularly serviced brake calipers don't seize.
Throw in some mechanical sympathy, ie warm and cool routines for turbochargerd engines, going gently over road calming lump and pot holes, all these things add up to vehicles lasting many years, and the new self appointed apparatchiks being unhappy.
What if these politicians ban manufacturers from producing major spare parts though.

@@silverdale3207 Do what I did, after some lady wrecked my bike, it was repairable, but the insurance wrote it off. I purchased it back and repaired it, but initially, I couldn't get it back on the road because I could not find one of the engine casings anywhere to purchase. I waited patiently and finally got one and she's fullr rebuilt now...but the whole ordeal left me with some sorta fear of the same thing happening again. Long story short, other than a frame and rear suspension, I ended up with enough spare parts to build another of the same bike, in many cases multiple parts that are harder to get, so this thing can have about 8 more crashes before I'm out of luck! She's pretty much unkillable.
Any parts you think may be tricky to get a bit further down the road, worth having a spare lying around.
It's all about greed.

In the US the catalytic converter theft was getting so bad that certain models were becoming "Totalled" by the fact that the cat would cost 3x what the car was worth. In most major cities (where the thieves are) emissions tests are required to register your car. When one of my clients would get their cat stolen, I would weld a pipe in, put a spacer under the downstream 02S, then basically tell them to drive the car with expired tags. Registration tickets don't give you points, just a fine. You could get 50+ registration tickets before exceeding the cost of a catalytic converter.

Won't work in my area. Unregistered car is illegal on public roads. They get towed to impound lots. Mega bucks in charges and it won't be released until registered. And then you have two weeks to get emission clearance.
Catalytic converters were a short-term solution which should have been replaced 30 or so years ago. They were meant to reduce emissions until more efficient engines could be built, or cleaner-burning fuels. But the automakers got lazy and didn't want to spend the time and money to develop something better.

The problem isn't that they want us to drive less poluting vehicles, it's the fact that they are completely oblivous to the fact that most people cannot afford the electric car as it is - they have no resale value, their batteries degrade until you need a new battery pack (which costs more then an engine and transmission refit on an ICE car) and all of this happens over a much, much shorter period of time (~8 to 10 years). It shows that lawmakers are completely unaware of the reality that very few people actually have the means to afford new cars, and that the general population trends to buying second hand vehicles to get around. And while I see some exclusionary clauses being added for "classic vehicles" and other hairloom type cars, this doesn't cover the amount of old golfs, focuses and corsas who are simply the only thing a single mother of two can afford to drive around.
It's a classic tale of "Banning something without providing an adequate replacement". We've had this before when the EU banned incandacent light bulbs before LED lighting was ready for the mass market, forcing everyone into this weird carcinogenic intermediate period of mercury filled shitty energy saving bulbs. Nowadays, we don't really miss those incandacent bulbs because let's face it, LEDs are simply better. But this point where electric cars are "simply better" in all regards, especially second hand "beater market" prices is very far in the future. ICE cars got cheaper because they lost their cool, their styling was outdated, amenities such as AC would fail and they would become less comfortable. None of these price degrading aspects affected the function of the car - it still got you from A to B, used the same amount of fuel (roughly) as it did when it left the factory, and thus filled the transportation niche for those that simply needed to get around, no frills and thrills.
I hope they revise this law and simply enforce updates on these cars, such as "engine replacements" requiring more modern engines to be fitted if they are done and mandatory retrofits to exhaust systems to reduce emissions. That would be a sensible and somewhat cost effective intermediate that allows you to still move your old car around, but also reducing the negative sideeffects of said vehicle.
Back in the '90s, when Germany had the presidency of the EU, they brought in legislation to kill off vehicle scrapyards.
Scrapyards had to be concreted and ALL fluids drained from the vehicles. The costs of concreting alone closed many scrapyards.
Germany, if I remember correctly had 'patent part approval'. Motorists had to get parts from the manufacturers - there were no motor factors or scrapyards. Again, this was all done under the 'environmental' banner!

In the 1950’s manufacturers of washers dryers vacuum cleaners etc made their items too good. They never broke. This was bad for the economy so US law ordered them to make it more inferior. Since then your appliance won’t last more than 2-7 years.
I got a "hand me down" refrigerator from a friend that took care of a 6,000 unit apartment complex when I bought my house 28 years ago and it still works great. He was told to replace ALL of the appliances because management thought they would fail. Who do you think paid for those replacements? Yep, the tenants. My gain. The only expense for me was electricity to operate the 'frige.

I saw a report that Tesla sold one car in South Korea in January of this year. Yes 1 as in one.
EV sales have slumped by 80% now that they know they are useless in cold weather. It has been down to -16C or more in Korea recently.
Not an ev advocate but living in Norway where it gets alot colder than -16 and there is no country in the world with more EV´s than here and its going fine.
Newer diesels are the biggest problem in the cold because of overcomplicated emmission systems and biodiesel mixed into regular causing fuel filters to clog up in cold weather.
@@Nifilheimur Thanks for the details. I also saw that Chicago had EV's sitting going nowhere due to cold ? Range is basically halved. So you can get to work but not get home unless you do a full charge. Costing you more money. None of this exists in a petrol world and needs no extra planning or anxiety.
Rather than the cold I think it's because the people that would have bought an ev already did. Those things are too expensive for the regular consumer unless you want to go into debt for a car.
I recall reading somewhere that cars will also be deemed illegal if they have ANY kind of modification whatsoever. The slightest thing that wasn't factory fitted and it'll be a goner.
I believe this was attempted by the EU some years ago but wasn’t passed as it would’ve put a huge amount of people out of work . The custom car world for instance would have been affected plus anyone fitting pattern parts.

I really don't understand the logic behind removing low volume old or enthusiast cars when the population is miniscule relative to the wider automotive world, and the effects negligible. You bring up good points regarding the emissions of these older cars vs building and buying newer cars so frequently. Sorry you guys across the pond have to deal with this. It's nowhere near this bad in the states yet, but there are small things creeping in here and there. Hopefully we can keep it from getting to that point. It’s complete BS. The British have a weird fixation with the EU. They twist every simple proposal into a dystopian hellscape. Even now that they’ve left they’re still watching like a hawk for anything they can seize upon to attack it on. Like a rejected girlfriend. It’s bunny boiler territory.
The logic is that you get roped into having a smart car, which can only be repaired at a dealership. Modern vehicle manufacturers REALLY want people to stop working on their own cars. The government and automotive manufacturers are very good friends with mutual interests.
Government gets people with less money more dependent on them, automotive manufacturers get business for repairs and a fat stack for selling a new car

@@fuji598 the best defense we can do is just not give into the new car scam, which admittedly isn't that hard. It is however time consuming and there is the investment of tools and space to work. Almost unfeasible for people in dense cities sadly due to theft/space concerns
There is on no plan to remove old cars from the roads, Geoff vastly misrepresents the point of the planed directive. The directive is not about what you are allowed to repair but what happens to cars that are considered no longer repairable (essential parts are no longer available, the car frame is warped). One goal is that junkers don't get exported to non-EU countries / regions, so that cars really do get recycled at the end of their life and not rot on the wayside in Africa. If you want a comparison replace the word car with plastic, the EU has a problem with plastic trash getting exported to 3rd countries for "recycling" where the plastic just gets dumped into the water in the end. It's not about you really liking that one plastic bottle and the EU wants to force you to throw it away.
Some of the terrible roads did a number on my control arms on my old Celica.
I replaced them and other components on the underside essentials returning it to a brand new car at the rear. I then did the front end.
Yes the cost could be argued to be more than the car is worth... but now i have an old celica that is brand new on the suspension. And it rides like new.
I would fight anyone who claimed it was due for the scrap yard because of a few bolt on parts.
They are already getting rid of a lot of the people. And refusing to talk about it.

The EU & all the other pan-national bodies clearly do not watch RUclips and see how popular all the repair and modify vehicle channels are as they would put thousands of people out of work not just on these channels but in the industry they get all their materials from!

If nobody buy the ev and insurance refuse to insure and cars are unusable because no infrastructure, the sell will stop and manufacturer will bankrupt and the gov with it as well. Then ICE would come back easily with import first and fast gas station creation. Ev will be banned except if they resolve all the issue and do:
- no lithium battery
- very small less than 30 cm battery exchangeable in any shop
- resistant to fire and water.
Can be put in these environments for 5 minutes.
- no politisons from extraction of the materials
- highly recyclable
- same size battery for all cars of all manufacturer
- low cost at nearly every shop (1000$ or less)
- exchangeable on the road by delivery in case of fsilure.
-backup battery in the trunk.
-battery instal in the high part of the vehicle and not underneath for safety and resistant to flood
-battery removable for people living in building with no access to recharge.
It's very logical when you realise what their aim is.

It's about complete and utter control of every inch of our lives. I cannot imagine all the old cars gone from our streets forever. It's as if we dont have a choice in any aspect of our lives.

I believe that this process as started more than several years ago by the EU administrators. they didn't want plebs like us fixing our on vehicles.
It used to be the case that if your car didn't start, you checked battery, points plugs ect. Now the first thing you have to pick up is the plug in analyser. Saab as one of the first vehicles to have these sorts of intricacies. If you called the breakdown services out to a Saab, they used to just tow it to the dealership.
I agree with the previous comments. why are we still listening to the EU, tell them to get stuffed and to all you Motor factors, sell your parts to the Brits.
Most car body panels require cutting and welding if the panel require replacing.
Yeah that's my read of it so far. If you've been in an accident / the car got damaged somehow you're scr3wed...
(unless you can do the repair by yourself - but they're like aiming to leverage oversight processes to register damage)
To me other scenario's are already covered under regular economics and depreciation due to high costs to repair

The EU does a lot of weird stuff, but not THAT weird: There are no plans of the EU to "ban repairs" of older cars. There have been published some Quotations out of context, suitably shortened by interested parties, but thats about it.

These days it has evolved into stopping people from being able to repair what they own, even going as far as to suggest you do not even own what you have payed for...
Anything that can't be retro fitted with tracking and immobilising devices will be deemed technically irreparable. Happy days.
Never even thought of that. My 13 year old car has very little connectivity. Newer cars can be bricked remotely because they all have tech in them that allows it. And GPS built in. Wow.

The insurance companies are already writing cars off for very little now. I just bought a car from the scrap yard & it cost £500 to fix.
The car is worth £5k ish so the insurance companies are being irresponsible with shareholders cash because £500 is waaay cheaper than £5k

My Audi has had no welding done in its 30 years of life, and does not look like it will need any for a long time yet. If they cant get them off the road for one reason, I'm sure they will find some excuse in the not too distant future.
It is amazing how much Audi has improved its rust protection. The Audi 80 and Audi 100 from the late 60s and early 70s were right up there with Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Moskvich for galloping rust. Not only have they fixed the problem but they have managed to live down the reputation.
So when it hits the fan we won't even be able to go 'Mad Max'!

We need political leaders with an iron will and cajones of steel to argue robustly we can and should do our own thing. Our present laws are sufficient to stop cut and shut and improperly repaired vehicles from being resold. Implementation of the laws is what is needed.

What has happened to this country called Great Britain ?? We were at the birth of the industrial revolution and proud to be so. Now all we do is accept pathetic regulations from (primarily failed national politicians) people in a foreign body who nobody voted for! We have denuded the country of the vast majority of its industry on the false premise of Net Zero, That has so many definitions nobody know what it means in reality. So in practice is unachievable! as once again it is all chasing this ideology of human caused global warming which again is an unproveable concept, due to the number of known unknowable's & therefore unproveable!
