I was in England in 2018 for a few weeks and used the trains for the first time. If you book a few days in advance, and have some flexibility about departure time, it does lower the prices, but even then they’re not cheap. Went from Manchester Airport to Birmingham by slow bus (on its way, with many stops, to Heathrow) for £5 in greater comfort than most trains I rode.
It says something about the UK rail system in 2019 that its cheaper to travel 380km to Amsterdam then 520km back the other way to Liverpool than it is to take the train (which would have lower running costs than an airplane) for a much shorter distance.
Jonathan Wilson Rail travel in England is fucking shit, overpriced and terribly managed, doesn’t matter where I’m going in this country I’m gonna be driving or flying.
Ah, this old chestnut. 1) You're booking your train fare after 6pm the day before travel, so you only get the expensive walk-up fares. If you'd booked earlier, you could have probably got much cheaper advance fares on your route. It is these fares that are generally more comparable to airline fares. OK, so you were only told you needed to be in Liverpool the day before, but did you really have to leave booking your fare until almost 10pm that night? It was daylight when you said that you "have to be in Liverpool tomorrow". Most people making a longer distance journey have plenty of notice. 2) You could have got a fare for as little as £102.30 (or £51.65 as a Saver Half Return, assuming you were going back somewhere), with some restrictions on your departure from Euston. If you had looked for fares departing earlier, you'd have avoided the evening peak out of Euston and got one of these cheaper fares. 3) That route is particularly convoluted. There are usually hourly direct trains between Euston and Liverpool, and you would rarely need or want to go via Chester. In the month of July (when you travelled) there were engineering works on the line into Liverpool Lime Street. It would usually be far quicker on a direct train. 4) You can walk between St Pancras and Euston. In fact, it's a well signed route that is quicker and far more pleasant than the underground, and probably quicker and more pleasant than some of the routes you'll take to your gate at a larger airport. 5) Seat reservations are free with all train tickets (provided the train offers reservations - all Virgin Trains do), although you need to book before 6pm on the day of travel. 6) How much did your ticket from Maidstone to Gatwick cost? You've deliberately obscured the price of that fare, which I reckon was £29.00 (although you could have got it for £19.30 if you slummed it in Standard Class). Also, assuming your destination is Liverpool (and not the airport) , you haven't mentioned how you got there, let alone how much that cost. Add that in to your air fare, and you're certainly not half the price any more. 7) easyJet do not operate connecting flights, as you well know. If your flight from Gatwick was late, you'd have been deemed to have missed your flight to Liverpool and been stuck in Amsterdam. Onward travel would be at your own expense, and if you wanted to be in Liverpool that day expense would certainly be the right word. If one of your trains was delayed on the railways (even with the most restrictive tickets), you'd be permitted to travel on the next available service. 8) Maybe not an issue for you, but for people in general the railways offer a much better luggage allowance than airlines, particularly for hand luggage only. If you had happened to have a larger case with you, or maybe a case and a rucksack, then in this last minute scenario you'd have been paying easyJet to check it in. And what about if you just happened to have large quantities of liquid with you? And if you didn't have a passport? 9) You haven't looked at other options, such as coach travel from London to Liverpool. Slow, but probably cheap as chips. 10) The journey between Maidstone Barracks and Gatwick Airport appears to require two changes. All in all, your journey has more changes than the usual route to Liverpool (not including the engineering works). In short - for this very particular circumstance (which I'm convinced was more than a bit contrived TBH), and by deliberately hiding the cost of travel to and from the airports, you've managed to get an air fare via Amsterdam that is more than half the price of a rail fare. In general, most people would have more time to plan such a journey, most people would be able to travel on a much cheaper fare, and the route by rail would be far quicker and easier. Rail travel in the UK is far too expensive, but there's no need to go to such extreme lengths to make that point, and I think it's entirely reasonable to have expected you to make some points relating to the specific circumstances that made this possible. I say all this because it's disappointing to see this channel stoop to this. I would have expected far better from you.
perman17 wait what lmao, he needed to get to liverpool and a train was far more expensive than a plane ticket so he flew, he likes aviation so im assuming he prefers flying. Whats the need for whole paragraph? Literally what a waste of time, theres some sad people i guess :/
You make it seem as if the public transport system in the UK is good. It's not, it's shit. We live on a relatively small island. London to Liverpool is a major route and there should be direct trains. The price of trains, even off-peak, is a joke. We have by far the worst public transport infrastructure in the western world, and you post a novel about his video is ridiculous? smh.
Day Glow Vista Plenty of direct trains to Liverpool from London, in fact an hourly service! The railways in the UK are often overpriced, but it certainly is not the worst public transport infrastructure in Europe.
If you had broken up your journey more on the National Rail website, you would have noticed that you can travel from Maidstone to London Victoria directly. From there, you could have taken a National Express bus that goes directly to Liverpool in 6 hours. To do it quicker, you could have got the tube to Euston and taken a direct train to Liverpool. It would have been well below 200 pounds.
Dan Gleasack How is someone, who impersonates another country’s accent, racist? And then the personal attack at the end!! It’s dickheads like you that has the world so PC
It's hard to get from Kent to Liverpool though to add the date you went Liverpool lime street was closed for engineering works so that's why it was more expensive and more changes. Quite often if you split your journey such as Maidstone to London St Pancras (walk to Euston it's just up the road) Then London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street it can be cheaper.
Made me chuckle when you said “So I am here in the delightful town of Maidstone in south east England” 0:10 with a police car blue lights flashing at 0:01 🚓 🚨😂
Usually enjoy your videos but this one is a bit unfair - you're comparing an "Anytime" train ticket with specific flight tickets. Easyjet tickets aren't "anytime" travel on any plane tickets. You can travel from Maidstone East to Liverpool for about £70 in just over 4 hours by booking an Advance ticket . In order to get your flights you'll still need to Gatwick (by train) and from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to Lime Street (by train). You also have more options of getting to Liverpool in the event of something going Tango Uniform when travelling by train than you do sat in Mcdonalds in Amsterdam
100% right and you can get a direct train from Maidstone to Victoria then it’s a quick hop to Euston and 2 hours direct to Liverpool city centre (Liverpool airport no where near). I paid £35 last Sunday.
You can go direct to Liverpool from Euston. You can also go direct to Liverpool from Crewe. I'm from Chester and going via here is definitely the LONG way round!
Came to watch this. I'm doing the same sort of journeys now, you have been a real inspiration for me, I was once a very shy person and didn't go outside I have now done over 50,000 miles in two years. I do journeys like this in the UK due to the state of rail fares even now!
I know this is a year later, but having watched this video your route doesn't really save much time. To get from Maidstone to Gatwick takes nearly two hours, did you factor in your train ticket to your total? What was the transfer time/cost in Liverpool? Also are you aware of split ticketing? Through a split ticket site I found a single between Maidstone and Liverpool for £44.98 with a total journey time including wait times, and a transfer across London at around 5 hours 40 minutes, leaving Maidstone East at 6:34 am Monday morning, arriving in Liverpool at 12:12 pm. The flights + train took just under 6 hours as you say at the end, but you're not in Liverpool, you're only at the airport. Also you haven't included the price of your train ticket between Maidstone and Gatwick which must have been around an extra £30 for a single? You would have been better off travelling by train.
I don't think you quite understand..... this is an "aviation" channel! It wasn't about taking the train at all. The whole was point was to fly...and show it was actually cheaper. Noel doesn't travel to get there, he travels to film the experience. So had he have simply taken teh train, he would not have been off as he'd have zero content for the show.
When i visited the UK in December I used the same website as you "National Rail Inquires" and found the prices to be very high but varied SO much between stations. It was going to cost me 110 quid to go from Ely to Lancaster via Leeds, but there was a limited offer going from Peterborough (the next city up) to Lancaster for 22 quid.
Not the point of video but train to London Victoria and then a coach to Liverpool would probs be the most economical route. Looks like you can do that for about £40.. Unfortunately train travel is expensive when trying to reach anywhere that isn't London
Love your videos! Did you ever want to be a pilot? What does your wife and kids think of you going away every so often? Your videos are my favourite channel!
Thank you! Maidstone isn’t bad really. I’ve been working in a little town called Snodland if you’ve heard of it (I hadn’t). So handy to get to London on the fast train :)
People like you ruin the rail system. You can’t look up one day and say that’s the price. You complain about getting a seat, yet that’s the point of the high price, so you choose a quieter train and get one. It’s called off-peak. If you bothered to show us more prices you would have seen that it’s half the price for a train one hour later. You just chose the anytime fare to show how “bad” the trains are. Then you pick the one train that had multiple connections knowing that most of the others are one change excluding the underground. Don’t criticise the trains as they’re the best and cheapest way of transportation. 11:04 Maidstone East - London Victoria 12:06 Underground 13:07 London Euston - Liverpool Lime Street 15:19 £31.00 with railcard Don’t criticise if you don’t know what you’re on about.
You have a valid point for sure, this was cherry picking train times, but he is correct in saying that last-minute travel on trains is very expensive, and it is more cost effective to fly. In the Netherlands (mentioned here so I feel it's relevant), you would really struggle to pay more than €25 for a train ticket from anywhere to anywhere. UK consumers do suffer from high prices, but of course there are so many reasons as to why. He wasn't wrong to point it out, most European neighbours don't have to deal with this.
In my back yard in Maidstone 😊 great video loved it. What were you doing in Maidstone in the first place? I work for SE and I see you took advantage of the Maidstone to Tonbridge service 😊
Just so you know, I booked National Express bus many many times, without fail they got me there...although this may not appeal to you, it may appeal to your subscribers. Sussex coast to Aberdeen on a Sunday night, £5.00 Angmering on Sea - Victoria - Aberdeen National Express £ 16.00 Total journey cost £21.00....no check in, journey time around 15 hours with stops, one of which is the Lake District...just saying 🤗
My wife and I flew Newcastle to Stansted.... via Krakow. Both of us by train £214 Ryanair £58 Even allowing a nice hotel and food and drink in Poland we saved about £60
Love your videos. Best aviation channel & always learning something new. Here, on the one hand, given the train density in Europe, your journey is not very efficient in carbon footprint. But, on another, why are train tickets so expensive in England ? (I am referring to your former video of Train vs. Plane in the Lyon to Paris case).
Noel, I think we should have a little European competition. Who can get to specific locations across Europe faster, car or plane and public transport. What do you think? 👀
Just looked up Maidstone East to Liverpool Lime ST £105.60. Maidstone -Victoria- Euston- Liverpool Lime st Journey Time 4hrs 15 mins..Without all the hassle of checking in etc.
I use to live in San Antonio, Texas. I priced going to Sacramento, California to visit my mom. I thought it might be fun to take the train but it was way to much money. Even Greyhound bus cost more then flying. In the end I just flew. I really was shocked how expensive the train was.
The changes at Crewe and Chester are completely unnecessary when you could go direct to Liverpool Lime St from London Euston. However I'd much prefer to go via Amsterdam!
Some right 'muppetry' comments on this thread. They obviously don't understand this is an 'aviation' channel. I know you have done some trains like the Amtrak and the Caledonian, but really? Lecturing about which train to get... FFS. All I can say is: Great vid as always Noel.
Nice, You were in my local area ;D.. I live in Gillingham which is extremely close to Maidstone...Great video and 2 more Flight Vids to look forward to in the future :)
Luckily for me I have three operators all operating the same route which means pricing is pretty competitive on my local line however the train really shouldn't cost double that of easyJet
OMG the train fares are just plain NUTS. England is my family’s ancestral home, I hope to make my first visit and try and see as much of the country as I can using some kind of a rail pass. I’m hearing from others too about how train fares in the U.K. are pretty steep especially when compared with train fares in other parts of Europe. Your idea turned out to be brilliant, and Yes I do like your music choices clearly your are a video professional, your productions are first class
I've used Easyjet once Manchester to Tel Aviv. Yeah it's bare bones, but cheap and cheerful, gets you there and very cheap at £160 rtn. I took my first ever flight at age 26, because of price. Manchester to London Heathrow rtn on BMIbaby was cheaper than the train, and quicker!
the woman who was the flight attendant as you walked on the plane went on the first flight to aqaba (sorry if spelt wrong!) because she was on easyjet inside the cockpit
If you include the fact that it takes 1.5 to 2 hours to get from Maidstone to Gatwick by train plus waiting around in the airport's and the fact that you end up miles away from Liverpool city centre it doesn't make sense! Just split your ticket and save money that way
0:02 - that's 10 minutes from my house..... Maidstone West, East and Barracks I know all too well. Getting to Gatwick from Maidstone on the train is a pain. It's only a 45 minute drive though.
Imagine it being cheaper to go all the way Liverpool via Amsterdam trains are over priced in the UK to the point where is cheaper and quicker to go all the way to Amsterdam and then to Liverpool
So train journey to gatwick, from maidston is 1hr45 min, 1hr20 min, 1hr 25 mins plus the waiting time at each destination. This is just a cost effective way nothing to do with time.
Rail fares in the UK are pretty scandalous these days. If one can book well in advance good deals are possible (e.g. taking partner to Edinburgh 1st class return next month and got return fares KGX to EDN for just over £100 per person with senior railcard), but travelling at short notice always costs the earth nowadays.
That price is a disgrace. The fact that you can get plane tickets to Spain for like £10 but a train ticket that is way slower and less distance *and* is often delayed is 20x the price is just terrible.
Unusual routing it gave you? Excluding the 'High Speed' service to St Pancras you can get from Maidstone into either London Charing Cross or London Victoria with a tube journey to London Euston, and from there it is driect trains to Liverpool Lime Street.
Insane UK train fares - we are a wealthy country but the 1% appear to want ALL of the money. Great video but depressing that the UK government (of every party) thinks it's ok to allow the madness to continue. 😡
Don't worry, in 2021 you won't be the most expensive anymore in the eu, since you've decided to jump off the eu-train. You will just be the most expensive one in the UK.
I have been to Liverpool I am lucky that I didn’t go from Liverpool to London on the train because I would’ve changed so many trains it would’ve been easier to fly
Fair point Noel, have you looked into using budget airlines for globetrotting around the world trip report within a certain time scale. Most countries have no-frills airline carriers nowadays. Would be great comparing them all. I know how much you enjoy a challenge going through endurance to the max.
I find it really odd how you to get to Liverpool you have to go via Amsterdam you would think that is the easyjet would have direct flights between where you are and Liverpool
Should have gone Maidstone east to Victoria underground to Euston then Euston to Liverpool think about 4 4.5 hrs and if booked in advance can get cheap fairs Euston to Liverpool via virgin about £60 return
Used to live near Maidstone, they have direct trains to london, then tube to Euston where there are direct trains to Liverpool. I don’t understand why the ticket website made you go through so many changes? Though the price would probably be the same, the journey would have been better without 2 of the changes. I would have driven you for half the price lol
That train fare is crazy and unjustifiable. It is probably cheaper to fly liverpool via Newyork.
Haha yep crazy prices. I've paid that price before and been standing for hours, rail travel here is awful!
Think that’s abit off an over exaggeration mate
@@benwiggins4750 No, not really. There are sometimes $99 one-way tickets from New York to Europe.

My wife and I flew Newcastle to Stansted.... via Krakow.
Both of us by train £214
Ryanair £58
Even allowing a nice hotel and food and drink in Poland we saved about £60
Love your videos.
There’s a Direct train from Euston to Liverpool takes 2 hours
Just looked up Maidstone East to Liverpool Lime ST £105.60. Maidstone -Victoria- Euston- Liverpool Lime st Journey Time 4hrs 15 mins..Without all the hassle of checking in etc.
Rob Harris advance tickets would cheaper
I use to live in San Antonio, Texas. I priced going to Sacramento, California to visit my mom. I thought it might be fun to take the train but it was way to much money. Even Greyhound bus cost more then flying. In the end I just flew. I really was shocked how expensive the train was.
If you want to take ten times as long for twice the price, Amtrak is the way to go. Of course, you get to see the scenery along the way.
National express coach?
The changes at Crewe and Chester are completely unnecessary when you could go direct to Liverpool Lime St from London Euston. However I'd much prefer to go via Amsterdam!
Some right 'muppetry' comments on this thread. They obviously don't understand this is an 'aviation' channel. I know you have done some trains like the Amtrak and the Caledonian, but really? Lecturing about which train to get... FFS. All I can say is: Great vid as always Noel.
Loving these vlogs, keep it up👍👍
Nice, You were in my local area ;D.. I live in Gillingham which is extremely close to Maidstone...Great video and 2 more Flight Vids to look forward to in the future :)
Awesome :) . Been doing a lot of work in Maidstone lately. Full flight vids coming soon :)
I live in Snodland
Luckily for me I have three operators all operating the same route which means pricing is pretty competitive on my local line however the train really shouldn't cost double that of easyJet
Awesome video
OMG the train fares are just plain NUTS. England is my family’s ancestral home, I hope to make my first visit and try and see as much of the country as I can using some kind of a rail pass. I’m hearing from others too about how train fares in the U.K. are pretty steep especially when compared with train fares in other parts of Europe. Your idea turned out to be brilliant, and Yes I do like your music choices clearly your are a video professional, your productions are first class
Great Video! Was that an A319 or an A320? Keep it up and thanks!
A320 both ways :)
Ooo-err Noel, a day-trip to Amsterdam on a cheap ticket, that could pique the interest of a customs man...:)
Mega bus for under £15
the woman who was the flight attendant as you walked on the plane went on the first flight to aqaba (sorry if spelt wrong!) because she was on easyjet inside the cockpit
Rental car? Lol
Nice video!
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!
If you include the fact that it takes 1.5 to 2 hours to get from Maidstone to Gatwick by train plus waiting around in the airport's and the fact that you end up miles away from Liverpool city centre it doesn't make sense!
Just split your ticket and save money that way
You would think that flying would be more expensive....
Alfred flying is much cheaper these days
We flew from Edinburgh to Manchester. Less than an hour and half the price of the train.
0:02 - that's 10 minutes from my house..... Maidstone West, East and Barracks I know all too well. Getting to Gatwick from Maidstone on the train is a pain. It's only a 45 minute drive though.
Amazing video !
I love Easyjet
How much was train from Maidstone to Gatwick, was this included in your half price ticket??
It's very funny and how jetstar and easyJet have the same colours
How cool is that coming to my home town in maidstone! Great vid by the way :D
Underground from St Pancras to Euston? It's quicker to walk.
Imagine it being cheaper to go all the way Liverpool via Amsterdam trains are over priced in the UK to the point where is cheaper and quicker to go all the way to Amsterdam and then to Liverpool
Wtf was 7:10 🤣😬
Incredible just goes to show how much British train companies love to rip u off
So train journey to gatwick, from maidston is 1hr45 min, 1hr20 min, 1hr 25 mins plus the waiting time at each destination. This is just a cost effective way nothing to do with time.
I swear I love your videos! Where is your next long flight?
Im sure you answered this somewhere but which website do you use to check flight prices?
Hope you enjoyed your stay in Liverpool
The train prices are crazy but I'm a 100% sure there's a direct train from London Euston to Liverpool lime Street via Crewe and Runcorn
That's the kind of videos I like...what will the train companies say about it?
You speaking in Dutch lol
I didn't even know a380s went form Gatwick
I always go from Gatwick! It’s not bad in the morning but later it is as bad as you said, south is much better than north however
Excellent 💚
How did you book the flights via Amsterdam?
Awesome video. I love this style of video as it keeps you watching! Where is the music from?
That price is a disgrace. The fact that you can get plane tickets to Spain for like £10 but a train ticket that is way slower and less distance *and* is often delayed is 20x the price is just terrible.
Try flight to Gibraltar :)
Should've gone for a schmoke and a peishe of cake.
Liverpool a delightful city😂😂😂
Best option is always just to drive.
You can also fly from London to Humberside via Amsterdam 😂
The train fairs in this country are so crazy we really need to sort this shit out we are the most experience in eu
Don't worry, in 2021 you won't be the most expensive anymore in the eu, since you've decided to jump off the eu-train. You will just be the most expensive one in the UK.
Great that you got that price...but it will never beat the Level Airlines price for 1 cent ;)
I have been to Liverpool I am lucky that I didn’t go from Liverpool to London on the train because I would’ve changed so many trains it would’ve been easier to fly
Hate Gatwick Airport as well. Really is a nightmare. Love easyJet though.
Did you look into flights via Belfast from Gatwick? More direct route or was it more expensive with longer waiting times between flights.
No it was cheaper but I've filmed Belfast already :) .
Fair point Noel, have you looked into using budget airlines for globetrotting around the world trip report within a certain time scale. Most countries have no-frills airline carriers nowadays. Would be great comparing them all. I know how much you enjoy a challenge going through endurance to the max.
love your videos mate, but can i ask who pays for all these flights you go on ?
I find it really odd how you to get to Liverpool you have to go via Amsterdam you would think that is the easyjet would have direct flights between where you are and Liverpool
TGT travel tim gladman 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Awwww you were in Maidstone!
Bloody hell Noel the happy bunch have just sat behind you at Gatwick whilst you where doing you blog. Some people are so inconcidarate arnt they Noel.
I did this from Manchester to Bristol. Flew via Dublin for £35 total vs the trains over £80
Damn! And I thought swedish railways were expensive
Swedish rail is hella cheap
Should have gone Maidstone east to Victoria underground to Euston then Euston to Liverpool think about 4 4.5 hrs and if booked in advance can get cheap fairs Euston to Liverpool via virgin about £60 return
Used to live near Maidstone, they have direct trains to london, then tube to Euston where there are direct trains to Liverpool. I don’t understand why the ticket website made you go through so many changes? Though the price would probably be the same, the journey would have been better without 2 of the changes. I would have driven you for half the price lol
Big up Noel near my school🤘
Do easyJet do protected transfers now?
good Video Noel btw you say WE- who do you fly with?
