My mother has had her dentures for over 50 years that she originally got the day she got her real ones pulled. They never got any reline at all. She said when she got them she put them in and left them in except to clean them she never had trouble at all. I getting 11 remaining teeth pulled and getting immediate dentures and I sure praying I have my mom's luck adjusting well to dentures

My grandma did too, but she had her real bottoms. I think that's why. It's crazy, just bc her front teeth were bucked they advised her to rip out her whole top arch, and put a denture in the early 50's...but she has that thing till the day she died lol. Wild. How did your go?

I'm going thru this at the age of 67, had great shame, and you have helped me move forward in ways you'll never know. I'm 29 years old, never on drugs, not a drinker, obviously (lol) do not have an eating disorder, but I was so afraid to go and get my teeth pulled and get dentures. I'm an indie author, so my mug all over the place in PR photos and it would be nice to smile in them from now on. Thank you so much for the courage I needed! Kristi, if anyone leaves you a message about "you don't respond" "you really don't care" they obviously have NOT WATCHED your videos from beginning and in order = 3 kids, just married, special needs, Drs appts. COME ON PEOPLE.
You discuss all of that in many videos. People who say stuff like that to you are "selfish". I know they want a shoulder to lean on, but geez, your not the only one out there with info.
You are however, the most personal, most honest, pretty to look at and funny to boot!
I know this video was a long time ago, but I'm sure it still happens.
I was SHOCKED when you responded to me! I was grateful and felt special as well. So you take your sweet time responding to people.

They absolutely can, given you have enough bone to support the implants. Dr. Golpa (the dentist who did my implants) said that he's put implants in patients in their 90's. Of course your health and other factors unique to yourself would come into play but age alone wouldn't determine if you were a candidate or not. Hope that helps!

I'm a dental student, set to graduate soon. Anyways, I'm on here to hear what patients are saying about their treatment, and it's interesting to see how denture patients respond. Let me lend another perspective. I love helping patients, but hate making dentures because of patient expectations vs. reality. I have found that a lot of people do not understand that dentures only have 10% of the biting force functionality that natural teeth do. They expect, as you say, to receive dentures and have them function like natural teeth or implants. It's disheartening to see a denture get delivered, have a patient back for a follow-up appointment, only to hear them say those dreaded words, "I hate my dentures". And it has nothing to do with the fit. They're literally pieces of plastic in your mouth, and the more people that understand that, the better. The age-old saying is true: Dentures are not a replacement for teeth - they are instead a replacement for NO teeth. They will only provide you with esthetics and limited functionality. People get dentures because somewhere, somehow, someone has failed them. I don't mean to discourage anyone, but just to lend a perspective based on some experience with denture patients. The people that generally love their dentures are the people who have been edentulous for years and miss having teeth in their mouths when they smile. The people who are least happy are people who are literally going from having teeth one day, to having their teeth pulled and having a temporary put in. Why is there this difference in emotions between these two groups? To me it's obvious - natural teeth - even if in pain or broken down, have greater biting force. You can chew steak still. Once they are pulled, the patient becomes unhappy that the denture isn't able to do the same thing. Now contrast this with people without teeth - they have already gotten use to soft-diets and giving them dentures can only improve their current situation. To restore some hope - dentures that sit on implants have more stability and allow for more biting force. They won't move around nearly as much, and patient satisfaction is typically much better. They still aren't 100% like natural teeth, but they are a still much better than dentures not supported by implants. Additional positivity - even if you don't get implants, there is still the nice benefit of having your smile back, and feeling good about yourself when you smile. The esthetics of dentures can really change someone's looks and life.
You said that when you went in with your natural teeth, they took an impression and made a temporary denture for you to wear the day you had your teeth extracted. We basically make stone models of your mouth, and remove/chop off the teeth from those models and, using that stone cast, create a waxed-up version of dentures that will form to your mouth, and are approximately the same height as your original natural teeth. An impression is taken of the wax-up, and this impression is then filled with acrylic. As you can tell from the process, the fabrication of temporary dentures is an educated shot in the dark. When we trim the teeth off the cast, we smooth the cast to where we think the gums will be after the teeth are removed. It is possible that the gums post-extraction will be slightly different, however, the gums should swell and form to the denture somewhat as well post-extraction. Thus, temporary dentures are, in essence, "good approximations" of where teeth should be and how the bite should be. I have to usually reline a temporary denture to get it to fit adequately before the patient leaves that day, and even with that said, within 3 weeks they are loose again from the bone loss that occurs after teeth are taken out - such that another reline is in order.
For those wondering about the healing process with temporary dentures - your gums, as she said, will shrink a lot in the first year you don't have teeth. Your teeth are held in your jaw by the bone. Once the teeth are removed, the bone that held them no longer has a function for being there, and is lost - with most of the bone loss occurring in the first 6 months - 1 year that teeth are pulled. The gums shrink with the bone, because the bone is what supports the gums. People NEED to know this about their teeth. When you have a tooth pulled, you WILL lose some bone in that area, usually somewhere on the order of 8-15mm.
I see people writing that their bite isn't where it should be in their temporary dentures. The bite is approximated because of the process as mentioned above. The point of temporary dentures is two fold - to see if you like the esthetics of them enough to have them replicated in the final denture, and also to see how you do with the "approximations" that we figure will give you a comfortable bite. If you don't do well, the temporary dentures can be adjusted to an extent, and the final dentures can be fabricated to a more comfortable bite or better esthetics.
I know that was long, but my outlook is that having information is better than not having information, whether the information is what you want to hear or not. Best of luck to everyone, and thanks kalinjax for sharing.

Hi kalinax, thank you so much you are a wealth of information. I just got my wax tryin this morning and I really wasn't that happy with them but I signed off I was so tried of going without teeth. My insurance didn't pay for me to get immediate dentures but I was really ok with that, a lot of pain I didn't have to endure. I guess right now I am really emotional because my appearance is so different I don't look the same and it makes me sad so I had to just cry.

  • @guymerritt
    @guymerritt 12 лет назад +4

Just an observation: not everyone gets those "immediate", temporary dentures. It depends upon your insurance. I'm on disability and, after they pulled my teeth, they gave me an appointment that was almost 60 days out to get permanent denture. The majority of people get them, but not everyone. And when I finally got my dentures, they hurt terribly. I've struggled to wear them because I went so long without teeth that I learned to eat everything without upper teeth.

You’re a human being and we all have limits. What you’re offering is helpful. I’m trying to understand the difference between a bridge and permanent dentures and still not sure. I guess what I’m trying to figure out how permanent dentures differ from plates and bridges. I lost an implant and had bone loss and now trying to find affordable fix that avoids a plate: but bridge is like $8,000.00 so not able to do that but know I have to do something. Not asking you to solve issue just thankful you supply information.

I am so happy you are doing what you do to help women feel good about themselves. You have such a good soul and it shows through. I was once young and beautiful and thin. Now I am 66 and have no teeth because of a lot of health problems and medication. I am finally well enough to go through the process of dentures. I spent so much money on my teeth so I would keep them all my life like my dad did. My mom had dentures forever. I can hardly wait to get my done because I want to let my grandchildren see their grammie smile really wide for them. I want to eat meat or lettuce. It seems weird that I can't chew lettuce but that is just something that I can't eat it right now. My little Olivia asked me once when we were sitting in McDonalds "Grammie Cinda, how to you eat if you don't have teef." She is so dear. I showed her just how I did it by taking super small bites off a burger. You are so right about what women are to look like to make others happy. My husband doesn't care if I am skinny or fat, have teeth or not. He is supportive in everything I do. He has been on the sidelines watching me advance in education and now I am almost done with a Masters in Addictions. I counseled veterans for 15 years at the VA hospital in Amarillo and I am still so interested in helping people. You keep talking and helping people. Because of you I have learned that there are many types of dentures so I have an array to choose from. Again thank you. You help a lot of people.

You explained it superbly. Good luck getting the all on 4. It's a great solution to edentulism. However; 6 implants with fixed bridges or even implant retained overdentures (snap ons) is also a better option than just Complete dentures. 2 implants in the mandible and a snap on overdenture is standard really because your lower denture is destabilized by the tongue, cheeks and the tissues of the floor of mouth. Good luck :)

Hmm, my procedure was different from yours. My dentist extracted my teeth but waited for my gums to heal (almost 3 weeks, which made me take a leave of absence from work) before he made a mold of my mouth. Then I tried on the wax molds and then my real dentures were made. I am experiencing the same problems you did in my teeth not looking natural and feeling like a foreign object is in my mouth, and I sometimes feel despair over this as I try to talk and eat. I saw my dentist a week after my dentures came in, but my first realign isn't scheduled for another month. I hope that when I go my teeth look as good as yours. I'm worried they won't since we had different procedures. But I'll hold out hope!

Having dentures or partials at a young age is a life changer.
Try convening someone who likes you that they aren’t disgusting!!!
It can break your sole, your relationship, and your whole self image.
    Yet,
It’s the new you. So learn to cope with it and yes love it unless, try implants if you have like $3,000 per tooth at least at a minimum.

I’m in the process of learning to live with dentures. I’m 42 so fairly young but my teeth were terrible and I couldn’t afford $10k in implant work. If someone if watching this and looking for advice I would tell you to save your teeth if you can but to be perfectly honest I’m not hating my new denture life. It’s been a month and I’m already able to eat steak. I’d say I’m about 50% in my biting force and hope to get back around 75% someday. Don’t go with a group like affordable dentures. If you’re gonna get dentures then DO IT RIGHT and see a dentist. My mother used affordable dentures and it’s a meat market and it takes a couple weeks to get an adjustment. Me, I call my dentist and I’m getting an adjustment the same day. So stay away from discount denture places and get the care you need. A great dentist will help you through the process so much easier and make your life way better.

only thing that puts most people off permanent dentures or a good dental treatment is that it tends to cost an arm and a leg. I have been living with 6 half broken teeth for 7 years. I cant eat an apple I cant eat nutts and chewing is a tough work for me. My gums have gone dark purple now. But I cannot afford a decent dental solution. Gotta win a lotto. Your teeth look great. I would never know that you were wearing dentures if you had not said so.
My memory of dentures is mainly of my grandparents getting them. They were not very happy with them. I thought that was just how it was for people who got them. I'm so glad to hear that that is not the case for everyone. I've talked to others recently that have them and their experiences have been more like your own.
Do you know anything about dentures that are secured by implants?
    thanks

To avoid shrinking once you have the permanents, you must gently brush your gums, roof of mouth and naturally tongue. But the gums must be brushed every day to keep a good blood flow making the gums firmer and studier and stronger. Hence the dentures fit will be much better, safer and firmer and less movement if there is movement.

yesterday, I had all of my bottom teeth taken out, and the dentist had to grind down some spots, requiring stitches!!! Needless to say I am in a lot of pain :( I can't eat at all...wondering what to eat? by the way, your video here was very helpful, and you have such a big heart. People should and will understand that you have a life, and can't respond to everyone's questions. don't take it personally. Keep up the great advice ! hugs!

cont. I think the "Temps" are optional...ie. You don't have to buy them. I chose to wear them because I did not want to walk around town with gaping holes in my mouth after all the teeth that were pulled, that's all. btw, aside from the bright metal clasps that hooked around my remaining teeth for support, I could smile quite confidently with my $300 "Temps" despite having no molars! I have my Permanents, now, and they look great but I'm still keeping my "Temps" for back-up, just in case...

Started my process for my dentures...have to split my dentures(will be made by Dentures Today) & extractions will be done by another dentist bc of my insurance.. DT will bill primary ins. & another dentist will bill Medicaid so will take me about 4 to 6 wks waiting for prior approval from Medicaid but going to the extraction dentist in the morning, then back to DT for impressions & immediate dentures then extractions of 23 teeth then back to DT for the care of & perm. dentures. ty for everything

Right. In the "denture world" you would call your dentures either permanent or temporary dentures. I believe the snap in dentures are considered an over-denture or implant retained dentures, whereas something like the all-on-four it's a permanently fixed bridge. A lot of people begin this with temporary dentures that need to be replaced so that's why the set that replaces them is considered permanent:-) But it does make sense to consider implants "permanent" lol.

..and I still feel as though I have a mouth full of mashed potatoes - on the rare occasion that I try to wear the darned things. I posted on another one of your videos that my upper dentures gave me tremendous, knock-you-to-your-knees pain (at first). By wearing them now and then, that's getting better. If you get unlucky - something to do with the shape of your gums (as in my case -according to my dentist) the pain can be crazy. Glad you're doing so well with yours.

Good job,,, I wish my dentist knew about your video explaining the process as well as the difference between temp and perm dentures. I guess my dentist feels his cattle herding process is more important than educating his clients. Good job, very good explanation about dentures. Except the part at the end. Maybe you delete that part or make it its own topic

Hey, I've been watching as many of your videos on youtube as I can. I just discovered you today about 5pm & now it's like 8:06pm in Ohio. I found you by getting on Denture Living dot com for the Fixodent, they have all sorts of videos posted & you were the one that seemed to answer my questions the best & with great detail, w/ a personal touch I love. I know you are super busy, but can I ask you some quick questions by emailing you? I voted for you on 1-day miracle smile too. How do I msg u?

my dentist said he doesn't do temporary dentures, the ones I will be getting are the permanent dentures. is that normal? he said most dentists recommend the temps because it's more money in their pockets. he said I'll just have to come in to get them relined in 6 months. I always thought you get the temps first, but according to him it's unnecessary.

I have to ask DDS Dentures + Implants Solutions about this again after watching this because I don't like my teeth in my dentures. I got my 26 extractions with the temporary dentures put in same day. it's been 2 weeks 4 days just got my 1st soft liners Friday and I just don't like that the teeth are short & my bite is off I was told I will get my permanent in 8 months & told will have many adjustments during the waiting. I go back in 6 weeks but I can call to be seen in between if needed. BUT I was told those ARE MY TEETH. So I'm SO confused after seeing this and another one where the permanent look SO much better. Were your temporary teeth smaller shorter? And then so the lining it WILL be small to when you get your permanent? I need to ask more questions!! lol I PRAY it'll be like yours. where did you get yours done? Thanks For Sharing your story!!! And for your help!!
