Fran and Rich, I love how both of you are always learning and sharing your discoveries. You have a joy for life that helps balance the dreadful things that can happen to us all. Love your attitudes, and simple passions. You are a joy to follow. Thanks again!
The dawn song was absolutely magical, it brought tears and a realization of how we have stopped listening to nature, stopped experiencing, stopped just even sitting in its midst. Beautiful!
Somehow your videos keep getting better and better! You two sitting in the dawn woodland cathedral, listening to the chorus--ending with Rich enjoying a tree hug--was simply wonderful. Glad to hear about the gratis blacking and paint touchup, perhaps their attempt to make up for the leak. I'm surprised by the environmental imbalances we have in common here in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. : the knotweed (which we have finally vanquished from our yard), the year-round Canada geese pooping everywhere, the Ivy climbing and strangling trees, the missing swallows. I love your walks combined with the perspective of the drone footage. Seeing the relation of the canals to the rest of the landscape, rather than simply a shallow ribbon of water, is beautiful.
So glad you are enjoying the videos, I think a lot of these problems are man made, We brought Canada geese here as ornamental birds for the royal parks and many of the plants which are now invasive were brought deliberately, even going back as far as the Romans! We have now seen lots of swallows so that is good and heard a cuckoo this week.
RE: 25:20, I just have to say how much I envy you two lovely people, the quiet in the forested areas, the birds chirping, the singing of their pretty little tunes. I'd love to visit there and listen to them in person, AHAAA!! Caught ya' in the act, You're a Genuine Card Carrying Tree Hugger!! ROTFL!! Thank you so much for sharing the good times with me, I certainly enjoy it. Do be safe out there and watch out for angry Bears, lol. Cheers!
I absolutely loved the birdsong and the walk to the woods the previous day to be ready to get up early with all the plants and views of nature-fabulous!
It was great to see Kevin from country house gent, he was the first Narrowboat I started to watch and then David was the second one so glad you both enjoy nature it adds to your vlog, really enjoyed. Thanks
We’ve just returned from a boating holiday on the Norfolk Broads and heard cuckoos in two locations. One morning, on a walk down the banks of the river Chet we heard two cuckoos, one on each bank of the river. Loved the dawn chorus.
Hello ! Beautiful things are all around us ,perhaps we just need to look afresh at things we just ignore or take for granted ? I'm 75 years now , thank goodness I can still cycle through my local Forest trails ! Each time I see or hear something interesting ! Just now St Marks fly's are plentiful , dont sting or bite ,just a black fly with trailing legs ,rather clumsy fliers & beautiful to look at if you can get one to stay still enough ! I have been out last week or so to record the Cuckoos call for friends to listen to ,not much success till a couple of days ago whilst recording Blackcaps ! When I re-played my records back there were Cuckoos calling that I never heard at the time because apparently I am becoming 'deaf' to their call tones ! I only have an old 'i pod ',but worked magic for me ! I now have some lovely recordings to share with my friends ! Cuckoos call an important year milestone for me since early childhood ! Norfolk ! Thank you both !
Thank you so much. We have been seeing lots of those dangly legged flies and I had forgotten what they were. I remember looking them up last year. I will look more closely at them now.
I have no forest, that’s certain, but there are numerous bird families who camp in my trees and nest near the pool. I have the 4th generation of a family of doves here this summer and several families of cardinals. Sadly, the mother dove passed away a year and a half ago but last year her first boy brought home a new wife to keep him and dad company. I planted a little over 35 trees several years back after having to remove and destroy 30 pines who succumbed to the dreaded pine beetle who nested in and chewed off their roots. Anyway, I wake each morning to a wonderful bird chorus with many of the same songs you have recorded. The loud one in your chorus is equally as loud in mine. They irritate my daughter (as do most things) but they make me smile. She moved in recently to help me through what came, or maybe to help her. Don’t know but she and her grumbling are heading to Greece and maybe I will learn what the loud bird is before I go. Do you know what it is?
Thank you Rebecca. It must be wonderful to see families of birds returning and to watch your replanted trees growing. I have a feeling the bird you are talking about is a chiff chaff. Does that sound right?
The birdsong was amazing thank u soooo much for getting up real early to show us all, glad u took yr coffee too,..a great video thanks always and the boat looks so beautiful and shiny cruising along the tulips on top makes it look so charming, have a great day,🌸🌻💐😺🐶
Your boat looked really spiffy coming through that bridge so I bet you were both wincing a bit when she had to go bouncing through that by wash, Couldn't they do something to divert the water more parallel to the Canal. Those deep cuttings have an almost medieval atmosphere although very bucolic. I'm glad you've gone back to wild foraging., you mentioned "Fiddle heads "here lots of people pick them here on the river margins once the spring freshet of snowmelt subsides they very soon pop up .Locals here look upon them as delicacies' but I'm not that keen .Another great vlog ,thanks guys.Take care happy safe cruising. Cheers from Spring in Canada .....at bloody last
Glad spring finally reached you Ralph. Some of these locks did have a baffle cover over the bywash do divert the water but for some reason this lock didn't have one.
I loved this vlog, all things in it that's a pleasure to watch you do. See Fran weaving, the early morning bird chorus, the lovely dog walk and of course 'our Kevin' like you he was the 1st we watched, then David and Robbie and believe it or not you! When we were kids in deepest North Norfolk we used to call Sticky Willy "Sweetheart" - because it would cling to you. I think I'd rather have Sticky Willy clinging!!! 🤣 I do love watching you two and following your adventures and seeing life through your eyes - and ears!
What a glorious birdsong morning you had! Your lifestyle seems idyllic. I know you have your downs and concerns, etc., but the way you take in all the beauty that nature has to offer is just so inspiring and beautiful.

Hope no damage was done to the boat in the squirrely lock. I loved the very early morning Dawn Chorus. Beautiful video, as always. Thank you.
The Blackbird, my absolute favourite among the birds, every year in the month of May we get a night from midnight till 8.00 in public-service radio in Sweden full of birds singing.
Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I love the Dawn Chorus. Sometimes I get up early and just open my door and stand and listen to the birds in the trees along the burn near my house. It cheers my heart every time. Nature is wonderful. Take care and thanks again for sharing.
Cuckoo in Pitsea, Essex about two weeks ago just after 0700. Thanks for the vlogs. As a 70 year, virtually housebound with MS who used to holiday on inland waterways in the 1990s, it's a lovely way to relive wonderful memories. We had a Shetland "Tupperware" boat for 15 years and towed it to lots of places all over UK. We never had a problem sharing locks with "Tin buckets" as we just bounced off the fenders. Really miss the smells, noises and tranquillity.
Wonderful, wonderful video from a Wisconsin fan. The migration is in full swing and new birds in the backyard everyday!!! Fiddle heads - stir fry - tastes like asparagus.
I work full time nights and I often hear birds singing on my tea break when it's dark in the middle of the night! When I leave work at 6am. they are quite loud.
Stunning tulips on your boat roof!!! The only cuckoos we have heard over the years are the 6 that return every May to Knepp Castle in Shipley which is a rewilding parkland where they have storks breeding as well... Each cuckoo is tagged and tracked when they migrate and they have travelled as hundreds of miles over to Morocco....always returning to the same place... xx
Heard our first cuckoo of the year on Wednesday 1 June, moored between bridges 3 and 4 on the Llangollen Canal. Thanks for sharing your life experiences with us in the great videos.
Have really enjoyed your videos. Here in Houston Texas nothing could be further away from the beautiful slow pace of Narrow boating through the British waterways. One thing I am sure of… If I ever found myself trapped in the countryside starving, I would sure like to have a Fran around.
What a heart warming and fascinating video. You're very lucky to be able to investigate the countryside in your own way, combined with your almost encyclopedic knowledge of plants and whether they're edible, makes a thoroughly engaging video. Thank you for giving us a small glimpse of your lifestyle. Take care.
I’ve bought five bird feeders for my back garden all i’ve had is two pigeons! 😡 listening to that dawn chorus was pure bliss thanks Rich and Fran i really enjoyed it and i’ll be watching this vlog again….and again. 👍
I built a pretty decent bird table with perch and feeder e t c, and all we seem to get is pigeons dive bombing my garage door leaving deposits everywhere. Ah well.
You got me at birds singing and tree hugging! I know there’s deer in the canal areas and there have to be squirrels too. Eventually there will be a well rounded group of blogs to follow to come full circle of the narrow boat lore? Great art work too
Here, in Israel, we are watching the spring migration. I was birdwatching in the desert last Friday and saw lots of swifts and swallows making their way north. Some nest here, too. Thanks for the interesting vlog!!
Hello you two, thankyou and bless you for this delightful classic Fran and Rich video.. I was very emotional when listening and watching the dawn chorus.. Thankyou so much for sharing.. xo
That was funny Fran & Rich because the birds in the bank outside my window decided to have their own 3pm chorus and I couldn’t tell which was which so I paused yours a few times and they sounded exactly the same!
Morning Fran and Richard, we were watching your videos last night on the 4.30am birds songs, and this morning I was up at 4.30 to let are puppy out so we left are hatch open to listen, then at 7.50am we heard a cuckoo, we're at cosgrove, so they are about, terri and tony xxx
Dear Fran and Rich how lovely it was when I logged on and you had posted a vlog, I had been waiting for your next one and you didn't disappoint, this was just lovely everything you talked about was right up my street, from Fran weaving and crafts to the birdsong, and although I have never been on a narrow boat, we used to go on the Norfolk Broads every year, so I am familiar with living on a boat albeit for only two weeks, it's very different to the Broads, there are no locks on the Broads and the bridges are much lower, and although they were originally man made, they are more like rivers, I love the wildlife you see along the way, and the birdsong is wonderful, thanks for your vlogs I really enjoy them 🌞🌞🖐👍
Hey guys I'm in Northern Highlands scotland- 40 miles from North Coast. Cuckoo's swallows and house Martins all arrived together last week of April. Always loads of each here every year. Seen Cuckoo's one time flying 3 together in a bunch. Keep up the good work. 👍
You can always tell a Wood Pidgin because it says "My foot hurts betty, my foot hurts betty" unlike a collar dove who says "Who shot you who sot you" I relay enjoyed your video, thanks.
Your mention of eating knotweed took me back to my childhood (60 yrs ago) when we used to break the stems off the plant and peel the skin from them. We would eat the flesh, it tasted like a tart version of rhubarb. Another great video from you both. Thanks for posting.
A bit late now to save your new blacking I know, but a good trick I got told to try with the Tyrley lock bywashes when going up is to empty the chamber, then with the bottom gate open, crack one of the top paddles open until the bywash flow reduces, then bring the boat in. This lets the water that would otherwise come over the bywash and push you sideways, instead flow through the chamber, which means the flow is on the bow of the boat, not the side. Depending on how you're getting back to the Oxford Canal, our paths might cross in the next couple of weeks... I'll give you a wave if they do!
Hi Fran and Rich, lovely video, showed the countryside at it's best. That's the fastest Laura Maisie has been isn't it, when she was relaunched! You choose your shots very well Rich. Only just heard about Colin, you must make him a cake Fran😀
Haven't heard a Coco in years and we used to get lots of chaffinches at our bird feeders, but in the last few years we rarely see them and another thing we don't see anymore are flocks of Starlings creating great shapes in the sky.
Thanks for a lovely vlog guys. I've just spent two nights camping in Thetford Forest with my two dogs where there was a very persistent Cuckoo. I haven't heard one for years and it was lovely to hear, even though they are evil. Hugs.
Fran and Rich thank you so much for making our lives much brighter via your vlogs. Peace, shy a generator, and calm pass over us each time you post. God speed and safe travels. Cheers!
What a brilliant video. Great you met Kev . He was the first canal boat RUclips channel that I found. Those canal locks looked a bit tricky. It looks like anyone would get bashed about a bit. Loved the music on this video and the birdsong. Take care. Nick
Hello, just found this video as i was up with the lark this morning!!, so it was really nice to watch, I think i missed this one last year. thank you for explaining about the plants, it does really help and its interesting to know about them. stopping and watching and listening is definitely how we learn. we all need to do it, so nice to see, thank you for your vlogs.😍☺🤗
Good to see the fields producing after we have lost Ukraine we need all the production we can get, the birdsong was fantastic and we so appreciate you doing that for us
Fran lovely weaving. I've got loads of that sticky willy in my garden, thought it was just a weed so pulled loads up. Will have to try that infusion. Being in nature is amazing.❤
Good to see you guys enjoying the simple things in life. If you want to hear cuckoos the Thames from Oxford to Lechlade is the place, we’ve just been spending a few days here and heard them every day, also seen plenty of new born ducks and geese and a few kingfishers near the locks. Keep up the good work we love your videos.
I love how you live a naturally mindful life on the waterways, taking in the beauty of nature all around. Definitely the life for me and my wife when we are ready which will hopefully be in about 10 years but in the meantime we will keep watching your videos and booking narrowboat holidays. 🙏🏻
Lovely to hear the dawn chorus like that I get quite a concert from my bed. But you in the forest reminds me of my dad taking us out in the new forest at that time to see deer .looked like you were leant on a deer hide ladder......I had the best of childhoods. Lucky me xxx off on a narrow boat holiday next week!!!!
Hey Guys. Lovely video . Takes me back to when I first discovered you guys in 2020. Ive been away from Narrowboat Video in the main for 6 months of more but somehow watching you guys has given me the boost I currently need. You guys have a magic tonic. Its very special. Im re addicted. Love the dawn chorus get up. ' God Damn right its a Beautiful day' 😉👍
Hi Fran and Rich, my parents brought me to Australia when I was one, now I’m fifty-five. Your videos fill a huge gap in my understanding of English history that I would never have known existed otherwise. I especially enjoy watching your love of nature from the simple pleasure of walking, learning and listening. I might have a go at narrow boating one day. It looks like something I’d be happy doing. You got me at birds singing and tree hugging! I know there’s deer in the canal areas and there have to be squirrels too. Eventually there will be a well rounded group of blogs to follow to come full circle of the narrow boat lore? Great art work too
We will see what we can do 😊
Great vlog Fran and Rich.We heard the cuckoo on Monday 25th April in Thetford in Norfolk.
Here, in Israel, we are watching the spring migration. I was birdwatching in the desert last Friday and saw lots of swifts and swallows making their way north. Some nest here, too. Thanks for the interesting vlog!!
Ooh, they are heading this way
Hey guys great video so Beautiful and the song birds wow Thank you 😊
Just got back to Cornwall after a weekend away on Exmoor. We visited Tarr Steps and heard a cuckoo, the first this year but hopefully not the last!
Hello you two, thankyou and bless you for this delightful classic Fran and Rich video.. I was very emotional when listening and watching the dawn chorus.. Thankyou so much for sharing.. xo
So glad you enjoyed it
That was funny Fran & Rich because the birds in the bank outside my window decided to have their own 3pm chorus and I couldn’t tell which was which so I paused yours a few times and they sounded exactly the same!
Ha Ha, I got confused so many times when Rich was editing this video as I didn't know where the birds were coming from
Morning Fran and Richard, we were watching your videos last night on the 4.30am birds songs, and this morning I was up at 4.30 to let are puppy out so we left are hatch open to listen, then at 7.50am we heard a cuckoo, we're at cosgrove, so they are about, terri and tony xxx
That is wonderful. Thank you
Dear Fran and Rich how lovely it was when I logged on and you had posted a vlog, I had been waiting for your next one and you didn't disappoint, this was just lovely everything you talked about was right up my street, from Fran weaving and crafts to the birdsong, and although I have never been on a narrow boat, we used to go on the Norfolk Broads every year, so I am familiar with living on a boat albeit for only two weeks, it's very different to the Broads, there are no locks on the Broads and the bridges are much lower, and although they were originally man made, they are more like rivers, I love the wildlife you see along the way, and the birdsong is wonderful, thanks for your vlogs I really enjoy them 🌞🌞🖐👍
We made our final decision to buy a narrow boat while we were in the broads for a weeks holiday
@@FloatingOurBoat Hi Fran and Rich, I think being on the water becomes addictive, it's so calming, although I bet you have had your moments lol! 👍👍
Hey guys I'm in Northern Highlands scotland- 40 miles from North Coast. Cuckoo's swallows and house Martins all arrived together last week of April. Always loads of each here every year. Seen Cuckoo's one time flying 3 together in a bunch. Keep up the good work. 👍
That is awesome!
You can always tell a Wood Pidgin because it says "My foot hurts betty, my foot hurts betty" unlike a collar dove who says "Who shot you who sot you" I relay enjoyed your video, thanks.
Ha Ha! Rich's families version was "I don't like fishing, I don't like fishing" 😁
Your mention of eating knotweed took me back to my childhood (60 yrs ago) when we used to break the stems off the plant and peel the skin from them. We would eat the flesh, it tasted like a tart version of rhubarb. Another great video from you both. Thanks for posting.
Love your tulips.
Beautiful boat, beautiful couple . .
Thank you so much!
Thank you both xx
A bit late now to save your new blacking I know, but a good trick I got told to try with the Tyrley lock bywashes when going up is to empty the chamber, then with the bottom gate open, crack one of the top paddles open until the bywash flow reduces, then bring the boat in.
This lets the water that would otherwise come over the bywash and push you sideways, instead flow through the chamber, which means the flow is on the bow of the boat, not the side.
Depending on how you're getting back to the Oxford Canal, our paths might cross in the next couple of weeks... I'll give you a wave if they do!
We will try that another time. It makes sense, thank you.
Hi Fran and Rich, lovely video, showed the countryside at it's best. That's the fastest Laura Maisie has been isn't it, when she was relaunched! You choose your shots very well Rich. Only just heard about Colin, you must make him a cake Fran😀
It certainly was fast and very, very scary
Haven't heard a Coco in years and we used to get lots of chaffinches at our bird feeders, but in the last few years we rarely see them and another thing we don't see anymore are flocks of Starlings creating great shapes in the sky.
We did film a murmuration of starlings a couple of years ago.
Thanks for sharing your life with the public. You have a fan in Jacksonville FL 🙂
Thank you so much for your generous support. We will save this for a special treat, maybe a steam train trip so keep your eyes open. 🧡
This is such a gorgeous video. Thank you.
Cheers!
Thank you so much, glad you enjoy them x
Beautiful weaving ! Thanks for the peaceful video to watch and enjoy
Thank you
What a brilliant video. Great you met Kev . He was the first canal boat RUclips channel that I found. Those canal locks looked a bit tricky. It looks like anyone would get bashed about a bit. Loved the music on this video and the birdsong. Take care. Nick
Kev is a great guy, we are so glad we met him although it was too brief
What a lovely video. I enjoyed the walks especially, and the dawn chorus.
That was a lovely day. We hope to do it again somewhere different this year.
Have a go, it is really quite a refreshing drink
Love birds 🐦 in the morning.
Great relaxing video with my coffee, thank you. Also, very interesting watching the weaving
Thank you for taking me with you on your early morning hike love the bird chorus see you soon xxx
It all seems to be happening now, but we still haven't heard our cuckoo
I love how you live a naturally mindful life on the waterways, taking in the beauty of nature all around. Definitely the life for me and my wife when we are ready which will hopefully be in about 10 years but in the meantime we will keep watching your videos and booking narrowboat holidays. 🙏🏻
At least you can get a taste of it for a couple of weeks x
Lovely to hear the dawn chorus like that I get quite a concert from my bed. But you in the forest reminds me of my dad taking us out in the new forest at that time to see deer .looked like you were leant on a deer hide ladder......I had the best of childhoods. Lucky me xxx off on a narrow boat holiday next week!!!!
It does sound like a wonderful childhood. Enjoy your holiday
' God Damn right its a Beautiful day' 😉👍
Lovely to hear from you. Hope life is treating you well and so glad to give you a boost. xx
I send you my best wishes and thank you. Stay safe and well. Shaun.
Thank you Shaun, so glad you enjoy the videos
Just beautiful, your vlogs keep getting better and better. What fun and good on getting up so early! 😆
Thanks so much! 😊
Thanks. Lovely!!
Oh can't wait for Tyrley next weekend now looks such a joy 🤣
Ha Ha. Hope you do better than us.
