It actually lasts 4.7 hours with normal usage whereas in the same test, the MBP 16" lasts 11 hours. BUT, when gamging, the Razer lasts 1.4 hours and the MBP 16" lasts 1 hour. So, under heavy load, the Razer outlasts the MBP 16" by a little but with regular use, the MBP 16" outlasts the razer by over 2 times. Source: notebookcheck.net
Comparing the charger of the MacBook to This one is like comparing the motor of a Toyota Corolla to the Buggati Veyron and mocking it for being bigger.
Razer usually releases SDK for their RGB keyboards. You can do pretty much anything you want with it. e.g flash blue and red functions keys when you are wanted in gta 5. Although you will need programming experience to make it work and the mod support for the game as well.
I can’t imagine my last 20-years working in Architecture without a powerful 17” laptop at my desk. Dell XPS 17” through 2013, then the Aorus X7 through 2019 now the Razer Blade Pro 17” Powerhouse and thin 17” laptop. Only buy the best of the best.
I got the 2017 Razer pro. Amazing laptop. Truly desktop replacement. Definitely a hot laptop, so I do see battery bloat problem being a thing in future.
i love how you use 90s peripherals and a 90s game to test a "gaming" notebook. it shows off one of the biggest advantages of PCs over many other platforms - compatibility.
Should've gone with the studio edition. Smaller (15 inch 4k calibrated display), lighter, just as powerful, and spec'd out specifically for video editing (Quadro RTX 5000)... and it can game, although not as well as your current laptop, but it's capable. It's the same price, too.
My girlfriend bought the 15 a little over a year and a half ago, been using it constantly and done everything from drawing/photo editing in photoshop to rendering 3D scenes in Maya with Vray with some After Effects work in-between and the only sign of age is a very slight but noticeable coil whine when the fans blow at full speed. Hasn't reached the point where we'd call on support about it, yet. Outstanding machine besides that one flaw.
Lol Michael! You never play hardcore games on a gaming laptop on your lap! It will get warm. Especially if it was sitting on some kind of fabric or carpet that can actually block the bottom cooling vents. It's best to be put on a solid object like a desk or a table. And if you can put something underneath it on the back side to slightly raise it it would help even more. Trust me 😁
Purchased (online from razer.com) a blade stealth (13) in late April 2020 and delivered in June 2020. the laptop works flawlessly as expected. 10/10 for RAZER this time.
the pro 17 has a relatively small battery because it's flanking two extra fans at the bottom to direct air flow and improve cooling performance and I think it's a well thought out compromise considering you won't be using it far from the wall anyway
Gaming using the battery will reduce the performance of the laptop by up to 50%. The Macbook uses Dolby Atmos, software that is not installed on Windows computers. However, it is available on the Microsoft Store but it costs money. If you install the Dolby Atoms software, make sure you set it up properly, I recommend using the balanced movie preset.
I have the Razer Blade 15 from 2018. I’ve recently bought a MacBook Pro 16 to replace it. My blade 15 failed in a multitude of ways. Microphone stopped working, webcam stopped working, many many blue screens, I had my first plastic hinge protector inside the laptop crumble into four peace’s and a replacement I bought and fitted myself also crumpled weeks after I replaced it. The razer logo stopped lighting up and I’ve had graphic abnormalities on the screen. I feel like I need to mention I do have extremely bad luck with technology despite how much I love and take care of any product. To give razer their dues, the did help me out and resolved almost all of the problems however, because of all of the issues I needed to send the device away for repair four weeks before a flight to film a documentary abroad the laptop did not get delivered in time and I was left without my work laptop. Once I got the laptop back I spent a day reinstalling and updating everything then the following day the fan that cools the GPU started violently vibrating and grinding the whole laptop and I had to shut it down and restart multiple times before the issue would go away only to come back the next time after I shut it down and didn’t use it for a few hours. For anyone still reading this I apologise wholeheartedly if this appears like a rant! Although the laptop failed me and I cannot recommend them to anyone it did ultimately serve me well despite it’s problems, at the end if the day it’s a tool for gaming and creativity (I mostly used it for editing and Minecraft every now and then)
The desktop replacement or desktop debate is a genuine one and shouldn't just be dismissed on either side. I've used my Y50 for 4 years as a desktop replacement and for university paired with a screen, and it's unreplaceable for that! But I've switched to a desktop which I plan on SFFing and will probably stay that way, since I can get one to last a lot longer and for a lot less. Barely any real users change tech out so much! Plus there's always the option to remote into it with an ultrabook around the house.
It's an impressive machine, but the price (almost unavoidable) and Razer's quality reputation leave a lot to be desired. It's good to not see the common desktop replacement bashing that goes around. They have their place and if you find them useful, well you probably find them *very* useful. And yes, more reviews like this please!
I've got a Blade 15 Advanced (2018). First unit had a failing mic, followed by a failing webcam. I went through the support channels, and while it took a while all-in, I got an essentially brand new replacement unit shipped back to me. Common problems you'll hear about is coil whine in their power bricks - and that their laptops are simply over-speced for the amount of cooling they are capable of. This is similar to Apple, as both companies sacrifice a little function for form. I undervolt my CPU/GPU to balance the scales.
Not a Razer user, but with Corsair iCUE software, you're able to change the color layout on your keyboard and mouse. I have certain profiles for different applications. "Twitch" will take use of my hot keys and have a purple color scheme, "Basic" is just all white for minimal distraction when working, and "COD" will have certain keys mapped by color just in case I forget a key swap I did previously. Saying all of that, Razer HAS to be able to do the same things I just did, it's just going to take some digging and configuring of the software. As a avid tech user, you are more than capable of achieving that goal without our help 😂
Oh you can bind lighting profile per game. And more modern games even use the keyboard to tell you health, visualize footsteps, progress in healing items and much more
I feel like saying proper media controls being a rarity on windows machines isn't fair. The Dell xps line, lenovo's x1 carbons, and hp's high end line all have them. Just felt like a odd comment to me.
5:22 Numberpads don't really have any use in gaming.... They're on the opposite side of the WASD keys, so I mean they're not accessible when playing games. Also, I've never even heard of someone using a gaming laptop to game on your lap...
for realistic-simulation type games like war thunder which I play, those numpads are really useful for changing various settings based on altitudes when flying prop planes for getting those extra performance.
I’ve been using right hand on the arrow keys and mouse in left hand to game since 1995 and I’m right handed. At the time it seemed a natural thing to do.WASD seems bizarre and clumsy to me, though I know most people use it. Anyway, with using the arrow keys to game, the number pad is much more useful.
No numeric keypad? Sign me up! I hate having a keypad that throws the ergonomics off, sliding the keyboard to the left. The few times I've needed to use a keypad, a USB version has worked great. For this money, size, and weight, I'd want a keyboard with a lot of travel, though, and it doesn't appear to have a lot. How is the travel on the keys?
Also, if you look at _every_ laptop's speaker grills, MacBook included, the actual holes only take up a very small part of the grill, so there's no way of knowing the actual speaker size without taking a peek inside.
I'm gonna throw my Razer experience into the ring here. I picked up a 2018 Blade 15 Advanced off Ebay last year, and despite the many, many issues the thing has had since then I still like it a lot. When I was first setting it up and installing updates, somehow both the built-in webcam and microphone broke such that they don't even show up in Device Manager anymore. The cooling on this machine is pretty bad, especially when "gaming mode" is activated. I was thermal throttling on even lighter games at low settings until I opened the thing up to clean and repaste it. And the Synapse software, while really fun and useful for Chroma and performance options, crashes over half the time I try to use it. I did quite a bit of digging on all these issues, and none of them seem that rare, but everyone who talked about it in the Razer subreddit or forums were immediately moved to private messages with Razer support instead of publishing any details. And predictably, when I contacted Razer support to get some information they refused to talk to me because I got my Blade second-hand. All that being said! The light-to-medium gaming, streaming, and audio production work I do with my Blade work perfectly well, and I still can't get enough of the 144hz display and tiny bezels. I doubt my next computer will be a Razer, but I'm keeping this one around as long as I can.
He sounds like an older man, but he looks like a younger man. Wow! BTW, I was about to buy this laptop but the overheating makes this a hard pass, unfortunately.
You have to use the Studio option to configure the lighting for each and every game! Then assign each game in the Profile tab. You can even set sensitivities for each games on a mouse
If a desktop replacement is really what you need, I'd look at a Clevo laptop instead. Provides more options for high performance components and probably a lot cheaper too.

I just bought a Razor Base laptop open box 2019 for great deal, only issue which was main problem it didn't have the power adapter! I called Razor more than once to inquire about getting one. After enduring staying on the phone for over an hour, it connected and before I could say Hi they hung up 🥺 What a great experience so far...
Get a 'desktop replacement laptop' and play games on it by putting it in your lap!!! What a genius idea! I guess there might be some people out there who play games on desktops by stacking their keyboards atop their CPU cabinets over their legs...
2 hours on a battery at max performance in 2020 is the same as basically any laptop 10 or more years ago. The big change is coming with the new Ryzen CPUs probably, the power benchmarks look promising with 4-5+ hours on max performance.
Regarding the quality of Razer products, I owned 2 of their Blackadder mice and they both started malfunctioning after 1 year of use. I bought a Logitech G502 after that and it's lasted me 4 years now.
You can do game specific profiles! If you make a profile, you can use the app to link it to a game or app and it will automatically switch to that profile when you start. I use it for protools and some indie games, I think it's a highly underrated feature :)
I purchased a Razer laptop in November of 2018 (the Razer Blade 15 Advanced - 2018) and it held up for the most part, but a few months into using it I experienced some weird problems. One of the CPU fans would randomly start sounding like it was grating against something, causing me to force shut down the system. Opening up the laptop revealed some loose screws, but even fixing that, the problem persisted. That, and the webcam randomly stopped working. I tried contacting Razer support, and they did respond, but two weeks at a time. I tried purchasing an extended support plan- a process that took over 2 months to even get started on their support side. I was in the middle of a project, and between the issues mentioned above, the flimsy quality of the chassis, and how much the CPU throttled over battery power, I bought a MacBook Pro 16” and never looked back. I wanted to love my Razer, but I couldn’t trust it to get work done. Turning it on was a gamble to see if that awful grating sound would happen, it was hard to get work done on the go, and I couldn’t trust Razer’s support network. So as all of that happened during 2019, no, I don’t think they’ve made improvements.
It’s a shame too, because the idea of their laptops are amazing. I certainly miss the high refresh rate screen and all the ports, but the reliability is a huge problem and the MacBook Pro has incredible support from Apple and a large ecosystem too. It was my first Mac purchase, and it’s a machine I trust and use everyday. No regrets there, which is more than I can say for Razer.
my minor gripe that i have for desktop replacement windows laptops are that they get gimped once u unplug them whereas macbooks still perform at full performance even unplugged. Its a minor complaint though since desktop replacement laptops are typically kept plugged in.
I've had some problems with Razer and terrible experience with that, mostly because I'm in Brazil and they don't officially sell their products here, so I buy when I travel, they don't give support even if I ship it to them
I was deciding between the Razer Blade 17 Pro and the Razer Blade 15 both have the same graphics card and processor, the only difference is the Razer 17 Pro has 4K display with 120Hz while the Razer 15 has 1080p with 300Hz display, I was lucky enough to be able to try both of them playing the most high spect games to date and I ended up returning the Razer Blade 17 Pro as an exchange for the Razer Blade 15. I do want to throw it out there that the Razer 17 Pro will lag at times and overheat due to power inefficiency, the laptop has problems being able to power the 4K display while running 2020 Triple AAA games like DOOM eternal, don't expect the Razer Blade 17 Pro to be able to run Cyberpunk 2077 getting 60FPS at 4K - ultra graphic settings you may end up getting around 50FPS if you're lucky.
I have a razer blade 2019 and I have to say I love it! I hate the weird shift key on the 2019 models but it's so light and looks so cool. I love it. even my dad who is 60 years old and knows nothing about computers complimented it >.< . It's a big investment in my opinion but I work in IT and spend hours per day in a computer so I justified my purchase with "it's for school and work"
Ethernet cables are so useful in my college dorm! With it you get speeds around 300 mbps and without it you only get around 40 mbps! I use them all the time!
For someone who doesn't know about Laptops, how does heat affect laptops? Should you stop using it when it gets very hot? And if so, should you game on it frequently knowing it'll get hot?
Should have had a Ryzen 4900H or HS to be a decent upgrade from last year. Those old Intel chips need basically a 100W to keep up with 35W AMD part. Sad that Razer chooses to keep supporting Intel and screwing us in the process. Nice design thought
As a photographer, I would prefer the ips 4k screen over a tn 1080p screen. But I do occasionally play rainbow six siege. I really wish this screen moves it's way down to the 13 and 15 inch models. Maybe do something like what Samsung did. 120hz at 1080p and 60hz at 4k
the audio while may be flat its still a fuller sound and lot better than the apple. like comparing phones speakers there are only so much you can do with limited space. it may occupy more space but not in excursion, which is what a speaker does to produce sound
I've only switched over from a gaming laptop to, now, a desktop for three years. It's different not gaming where you want (i used a lap pillow to not fry my nether parts off). It's better now since I live in my house (with kids to boot) and can dedicate my gaming to one room but I have had many fun gaming years with my laptop for sure. Hey Michael. I was curious, monstrous power aside, how much of an impact do you think the 17 inch display made towards this feeling like a desktop replacement compared to your 16" MacBook Pro? I know it's not quite the same thing, but from what I understand, that too isn't exactly easy to handle.
so razer quality control, i got a razer 15 and its 230w charger died just after 2 month of use i reached out, razer quickly agreed to send a new one (btw it was and still is out of stock almost everywhere) it took them 5 month but after said period the did send me a new one free of charge.
Anyone that is seriously gaming do that without plugging the PC on the wall, or with it on the lap... I don’t know why tech youtubers do that. What’s the point? The Blade is a gaming laptop... so, it’s made with people that actually can afford/appreciate high end top notch spces for that it’s no shame at all to not have a num pad on it, and even if it didn’t have a SD card slot, wouldn’t matter a lot for gamers there are notebooks dedicated to creative people, and in those cases, it’s a shame to no have a SD slot, or num pad (maybe), and stuff related to productivity or video editing oriented stuff... as a product made for GAMING first, the Blade Pro is maybe the leader in it’s specs/design.
Desktop replacement laptops can be avoided if you have a good home internet.

Dell XPS 17” through 2013, then the Aorus X7 through 2019 now the Razer Blade Pro 17”
Powerhouse and thin 17” laptop. Only buy the best of the best.
I got the 2017 Razer pro. Amazing laptop. Truly desktop replacement. Definitely a hot laptop, so I do see battery bloat problem being a thing in future.
Not adding a numpad to a 15-inch is a shame, but not adding it to a 17-inch is a crime...
Trust me for the look part it's so much better without the num pad. I'm stuck with one but not so bad 😂
i love how you use 90s peripherals and a 90s game to test a "gaming" notebook. it shows off one of the biggest advantages of PCs over many other platforms - compatibility.
"after Just 2 hours of use" good god youre complaining about that? my work laptop can barely do 2 hours just using word!
10/10 for RAZER this time.
to get more control over the light you need to open the studio tab in razer synapse and from there you get to set the colours/effects key by key
the pro 17 has a relatively small battery because it's flanking two extra fans at the bottom to direct air flow and improve cooling performance and I think it's a well thought out compromise considering you won't be using it far from the wall anyway
I think they’re great but the fans are out of control. They need fine tuning because they’re jet engines for the smallest tasks
Oh you can bind lighting profile per game. And more modern games even use the keyboard to tell you health, visualize footsteps, progress in healing items and much more
Imagine a MacBook user making the statement "for a price"
2hrs with extreme use...daamn..that's a daamn good battery life🔥♥️
I feel like saying proper media controls being a rarity on windows machines isn't fair. The Dell xps line, lenovo's x1 carbons, and hp's high end line all have them. Just felt like a odd comment to me.
The line was "*in my experience* a rarity on Windows machines." I've covered mainly Surface and Samsung laptops for the past few years.
@@TheMrMobile that makes sense, I haven't been a fan of Microsofts or Samsungs laptops for a while. I loved your coverage of the Asus pro duo.
5:22 Numberpads don't really have any use in gaming.... They're on the opposite side of the WASD keys, so I mean they're not accessible when playing games.
Also, I've never even heard of someone using a gaming laptop to game on your lap...
I use Numpads a lot in gaming actually, especially for games like GTA V When you have a fly a jet or a helicopter using the num keys.
Some MMO's where using your mouse and relying on number keys to cast use the num pad but yeah not really necessary
@@mickeyu2893 Just get any MMO gaming mouse and hot key the spells the the buttons there. That's what I do.
for realistic-simulation type games like war thunder which I play, those numpads are really useful for changing various settings based on altitudes when flying prop planes for getting those extra performance.
Only average travel.
@@TheMrMobile Man, I miss the old Thinnkpad keyboards. A writer's dream.
Also, if you look at _every_ laptop's speaker grills, MacBook included, the actual holes only take up a very small part of the grill, so there's no way of knowing the actual speaker size without taking a peek inside.
Razer' speaker grill looks like a product of saving that $2 production cost on a very high end laptop! It's disgusting...
You have to update the speaker drivers, not sure why they're not factory prepared. The sound will be twice as good once you do so.
I doubt my next computer will be a Razer, but I'm keeping this one around as long as I can.
u can also get the stealth which is 13 inch so alot smaller
He sounds like an older man, but he looks like a younger man. Wow! BTW, I was about to buy this laptop but the overheating makes this a hard pass, unfortunately.
next year: A Razer user tries his first desktop PC
You have to use the Studio option to configure the lighting for each and every game! Then assign each game in the Profile tab. You can even set sensitivities for each games on a mouse
In Razer Synapse, you can mirror screen colors on to the keyboard. Same for Sound. Hope that helps with your tie fighter game.
If a desktop replacement is really what you need, I'd look at a Clevo laptop instead. Provides more options for high performance components and probably a lot cheaper too.
Mike as someone with small kids and no time, and has bought a cheap Logitech stick, I am jealous of your tie fighter experience, I am barely able to get mine to work and my 7 year old pc died. You give me hope there are other tie fighter nerds out there who can get it together ;)
You can download chroma user made presets online and just upload it into the program ,people make loads for specific games and programs
Why didn't you get the 15" version if you disliked the size of the 17"?
I've had some problems with Razer and terrible experience with that, mostly because I'm in Brazil and they don't officially sell their products here, so I buy when I travel, they don't give support even if I ship it to them
MrMobile: Bought a desktop replacement and was content for 4 years.
Me: Still using my Sony Vaio VGN-FE.
Ethernet is a must for a gaming laptop. No wifi can beat a good old cable in stability.
I do want to throw it out there that the Razer 17 Pro will lag at times and overheat due to power inefficiency, the laptop has problems being able to power the 4K display while running 2020 Triple AAA games like DOOM eternal, don't expect the Razer Blade 17 Pro to be able to run Cyberpunk 2077 getting 60FPS at 4K - ultra graphic settings you may end up getting around 50FPS if you're lucky.
respect for the comeback of ports
I have a razer blade 2019 and I have to say I love it! I hate the weird shift key on the 2019 models but it's so light and looks so cool. I love it. even my dad who is 60 years old and knows nothing about computers complimented it >.< . It's a big investment in my opinion but I work in IT and spend hours per day in a computer so I justified my purchase with "it's for school and work"
Any issues with it?
Ethernet cables are so useful in my college dorm! With it you get speeds around 300 mbps and without it you only get around 40 mbps! I use them all the time!
Plus you reconnect instantly on wired when the network resets every day at 3am for whatever reason... or was that just me
For someone who doesn't know about Laptops, how does heat affect laptops? Should you stop using it when it gets very hot? And if so, should you game on it frequently knowing it'll get hot?
Think we are going to get a razer phone 2020?
Should have had a Ryzen 4900H or HS to be a decent upgrade from last year. Those old Intel chips need basically a 100W to keep up with 35W AMD part. Sad that Razer chooses to keep supporting Intel and screwing us in the process. Nice design thought
As a photographer, I would prefer the ips 4k screen over a tn 1080p screen. But I do occasionally play rainbow six siege. I really wish this screen moves it's way down to the 13 and 15 inch models. Maybe do something like what Samsung did. 120hz at 1080p and 60hz at 4k
$4000 laptop check! $5 webcam module from 2003... check!
the audio while may be flat its still a fuller sound and lot better than the apple. like comparing phones speakers there are only so much you can do with limited space. it may occupy more space but not in excursion, which is what a speaker does to produce sound
The razer is a high-end option for sure but very expensive, I think mine was custom-built half the price but I can't see a reason why not to get it, if you want to spend the money.
Thanks for the video
I find it funny that 10 years ago the razerblade 17 would be considered ultralight. for me personally I use to carry my mini ITX desktop to work daily in 2016, so any laptop is light and convenient comapred to that
I used the older 17inch Pro, and yes it is huge and heavy, but it's still cute to hear him talk about how huge and heavy it is as if it's the largest thing ever lol
I'm enjoying the evolution your hair is undergoing during lockdown. Great video as always!
you should have reviewed the 15" one instead it is much better
Razer Synapse allows you to do different chroma profiles for different applications in chroma studio.
It's crazy to think that this laptop is more powerful graphically than most Mac pros ... Two hours on that kinda hardware is amazing actually .. especially with Intel's 14nm+++++++++++ omegalul CPUs . Now that you've gotten the taste of Windows performance ,Zephyrus G14 please....
Hey Michael. I was curious, monstrous power aside, how much of an impact do you think the 17 inch display made towards this feeling like a desktop replacement compared to your 16" MacBook Pro? I know it's not quite the same thing, but from what I understand, that too isn't exactly easy to handle.
What was wrong with the webcam? If it's good enough for video calls? What else are you using it for?
When you're making many more video calls than usual (as we all are), "good enough" isn't a compliment.
@@TheMrMobile I see. I guess I'm used to everyone having potatoes for webcams so good enough is good enough for me.
so razer quality control, i got a razer 15 and its 230w charger died just after 2 month of use i reached out, razer quickly agreed to send a new one (btw it was and still is out of stock almost everywhere) it took them 5 month but after said period the did send me a new one free of charge.
Anyone that is seriously gaming do that without plugging the PC on the wall, or with it on the lap... I don’t know why tech youtubers do that. What’s the point?
The Blade is a gaming laptop... so, it’s made with people that actually can afford/appreciate high end top notch spces for that
it’s no shame at all to not have a num pad on it, and even if it didn’t have a SD card slot, wouldn’t matter a lot for gamers
there are notebooks dedicated to creative people, and in those cases, it’s a shame to no have a SD slot, or num pad (maybe), and stuff related to productivity or video editing oriented stuff...
as a product made for GAMING first, the Blade Pro is maybe the leader in it’s specs/design.
Desktop replacement laptops can be avoided if you have a good home internet. I have a decent gaming rig at home with Parsec installed and use my HP Spectre to connect to it from anywhere and play my games at 120hz. More people need to try out Parsec. It's the best kept secret in tech and it'll blow your mind how amazing it is. And no I'm not an employee, just a tech nerd who loves trying and sharing info on cool products.
I love how Jibo is in the background looking out the window like a good little forlorn robot should.
As an Acer Nitro 5 user, I wish this thing didn't have a number pad. The track pad is offset which bothers me a bit.
Even this 2020, no perfect laptop still. Its just a matter preference. I prefer not carrying and buying more dongles for apple's macbooks. Staying at home to be still a laod of dongles just because i am using macbook is a hassle by all means.
For unbiased and trustworthy reviews this is the guy you would want to watch first!
What's up with the video resolution....it doesn't fit the top.
It's so cute that Mr. Mobile calls it massive and desktop replacement. Maybe try one of those clevo barebone chassis or alienware area 51m with actual desktop hardware.
PLEASE PLEASE DO AN UPDATE ON THIS COMPUTER!!!! I want do see opinions before buying it. Have you had any problems?
I have the 2019 Pro model and it's still pretty amazing!
