  • The orca got about as close as it could to the woman's vessel.

I've lived in this area for over 20 years and I still haven't seen an orca. I'm always too late when I hear they are around. I envy these folks. 🙂

This phenomenon makes me nervous that people are feeding them or orcas are now associating boats with a potential opportunity to snag a fish off a line. It's always dangerous for aquatic wildlife to get close to humans in boats.

I have said, I want to go out and create a human chain, or block off when a boat passes thru. Orca's are fast and know to get out of the way, this is a juvi, very cute, juvi of any species is playful, likes humans, and wants an innocent good time. I do not want orca spotting vessles dedicated to seeing wildlife for pay. No way.

So if i see a whale coming at me i cannot speed away? I need to remain stationary like it's a bear? What about all the orca-boat attacks across the world recently ? This is a stupid law.

Relax. The orca-sailboat interactions are one pod, in one place, on the other side of the world.
All indications are that those Iberian orcas are playing, not "attacking."
They push the rudders around with their noses, often until they break off, then they leave.
You can certainly flee the area if you see them coming from a distance, but if you speed off under power when they are very close, you may injure a whale.

Killer Whales are hungry for blood, they were busy filming when they should have high tailed it out of there. Fools.

Did you verify that the person sending you this clip wasn't commenting on Orca Network sitings in the days leading up to this and intentionally putting themself in the path of orcas? Your clip doesn't discuss the Whale Wise guidelines or encourage others to not try and recreate these close "accident" passes. You covered some of the issue today while failing to acknowledge that this video from over the weekend WAS one of the many boats on the Hood Canal, many of whom were actively persuing the orcas outside of the legal bounds. When you post clips like this without the context you are in fact encouraging dangerous and illegal behavior to continue. Many of the people who regularly get these close passes on boats or kayaks have done so intentionally for clout and it's your job as reporters to discover if it was actually accidental or if all boating laws were followed before airing the clips. This was literally suggested to me on your site underneith the article where you interviewed Tisa about keeping a distance from whales!!!
