Losing Luna was a tragic loss because the local people loved Luna and she loved them. And it gave people an up close encounter of a beautiful wild animal that chose the company of humans.
Just went to Alaska to fish for the first time and we encountered a small pod (2 males, mom, baby). Experience of a lifetime. The baby played with the boat while mom and dad kept an eye on things. Absolutely beautiful.

It was the older brother not dad. Male orcas only leave their mothers side to mate, and then return to their pod. It's very matriachial. A female orca's children rarely leave their side even as adults.

Early 80s near Friday Harbor, was drowsing along in my sailboat and I felt a shock like I’d hit a rock. Then the front of the boat began yawing a bit. Looked to the bow and there’s a male orca rubbing his snout against the bow of the boat. Reached over and gave him a rub and he rolled over in surprise. Came up and looked at me and I looked back and he came up for more rubs and rubs against the boat. After about 15 minutes he had his fill and let me go. 12 foot sailboat. 20 foot orca. I’ll never forget that experience.

@@derricdueker64 I heard that one od orcas in captive was like trained for shows,but killed 3 people,and not just killed with teeth,he drowned them(he bit a bit and dragged in and around in watee).To me it seems like he was showing how it feels being somewhere he don t want to be,but forced.And orcas in wild don t atack humans as i know so it might be the reason they kill sometimes in captive(that 3 times killler is max times as i know)

If you swim or go in a specific spot, they can come back and see you daily and remember you

The most amazing thing about Orca is that even after all we humans have done to them, they CHOOSE to interact with us in a positive way!

Humans also save beaches Orcas, and scientists believe they know this. They are also potentially scared of hurting us.
Orcas don’t have a collective unconscious or a wide information network like we do, so their positive reactions must be built in.
@@momega7189 They are very social amongst their own pod and very intelligent. It is possible that most living orcas have evolved to just not want to attack humans... maybe they think we're cute.
Luna was absolutely remarkable. I saw a full documentary about her called, A Killer Whale Called Luna. Orcas are so smart, it's just stunning. She was so sweet and friendly, with everyone. Sadly, the story does not have a happy ending. I hate bureaucrats.

Whether it's true or not, I believe there is a reason why orcas are suddenly attacking boats. Beware of conspiracy theories for it's a really deep rabbit hole too deep to climb back out of!
Unfortunately but befriending humans more often than not endup killing wild animals in one way or another. And here we have example were Luna got too comfortable around boats until one day got ripped to peaces by propellers. Honestly it's irresponsible for people to act like this with animals knowingly very well that boats had not been designed with idea of safety for marine animals. Would you just casually hang around in front of a plane that's got an engine on? Yet that's what people reward these orkas for.
I love how they’re known as the wolves of the ocean. Because they are so deadly. Yet the only time an orca has ever killed a human, was because they were being held in captivity. It’s almost like they know who the jerks are. Not once has an orca killed a human in the wild.

All comes down to brain chemistry - behaviour like that changes the human brain at the chemical level, animals are very sensitive to that change, most humans have lost that ability, but animals haven't.
Orca's attack for two reason food or they feel threatened. The later being hard to achieve unless you go out of your way to attack them. I like to imagine Orca's and Dolphins see us as "Zoo animals".

Yes, I had a similar experience in Monterey Bay in California in the late 80's. We were fishing in a 23 foot boat, trolling for salmon when a couple of orcas came up behind us. We had two 10-pound lead weights on down-rigger cables that went down 200 feet with four fishing lines trailing behind us about 50 yards. Not once did they get tangled in our equipment. They swam along side of us coming as close as three feet from the boat. After a few minutes and as a parting gesture, one of them turned upside down and swam under our boat. I looked down and all I saw was white and black belly under our boat. It crossed from right to left and disappeared after that. I was only 16 or so at the time.
I was in photography class at the time and I had an old 35mm camera with black and white film with me. I still have an 8x10 photo of that orca to this day. It was one of the most humbling and spiritual experiences I ever had in my life.
Only a few people will learn this lesson. With ever increasing contact with orcas, incidents of this nature will reoccur. Iys not worth the few seconds of excitement you feel. Admire them from a safe distance.
You don't have to go to a prison like Sea World to see these beautiful and majestic animals. You can observe them where they belong in the open ocean, free. These clips were stunning.
I despise places like sea world that hold animals in cages.
Is it free though? You can pay to go to Norway where Orcas often are and dive to see them?

@@rianmacdonald9454 Depends on the animal - lots of animals actually would prefer a zoo with nice enclosure and enjoy visitors. It's safe, no need to worry about being eaten, injuries are not life-ending and are treated and lots of animals enjoy interacting with zookeepers. And they live way longer than if they would be in the wild.
Nature is cruel and dangerous and miserable existence for lots of species. You should understand that better than most, seeing as you live in a house and have internet. If you feel like Nature is great - go live in a tent in the fores.
@cl1cka he didn't say that it was free to see orca in the ocean. He said that orca are free in the ocean, not kept in a tiny aquarium.
Sea World treats their animals very well. Their whales are bred in captivity now and they free food and medical care for life.

Well Orcas are huge assholes to most sea life, just not to humans. It might have something to do with people often helping stranded or injured Orcas and they are intelligent enough to know, that they should be friendly in case they need help.
@@cl1cka what makes them A-holes. They are carnivores, and they are intelligent. Cats could be described as A-holes for how they treat rodents and other small game. The Orca's of New Eden is an excellent video to see about orcas and humans who worked together.

Dolphins do that too.
Often they would make other fish/mamals die slowly, while they are not interested in eating them.
Chimps are the same as well - don't ever get close to Chimps. In the wild they will organize gang assaults on each other, and tear the genitalia of the victim and dance and enjoy it....

Luna was a gift from God for humans to truly appreciate the majesty and intelligence of these animals. What a sad way for Luna to pass. The selfishness of man..
The boat driver wasn't selfish. He was stupid and lucky the town didn't kill him in reprisal in 2006.

Any encounter with aquatic life, especially Orcas, is a blessing if it's a non threatening situation. I would never take such an encounter for granted..... the swimmer with the Orcas on the coastline..... my God..... how incredible. I'll always be a Champion of any animal, this video is just another reason that solidifies my outlook.

I would have NO fear..just the feeling of elation and happiness!! What an honor to swim with these intelligent creatures. Their are no reported deaths of wild orcas attacking humans . We're not their food!! They're just curious and they know we pose no threat to them😊

@@Th1sUsernameIsNotTaken to be fair they have ONLY every done it in one specific part of spain/Portugal's waters and scientists think it's due to sonar from the boats. The orcas havent attacked any of the people in the boats they caused to capsize.

Yeah, but we don't know about the hungry Orcas who ate the humans, because they couldn't testify. Still would swim with an Orca and not a shark.
@@sebcharb7313 It's just like sharks they don't see us as food. Sharks tend to take bites of surfers and let them go because they quickly realize that wasn't a seal. Orca are just a bit smarter and naturally social so they like to interact with us.
Had a well known pod of Bottle nose Dolphins in the Gulf near Panama city and they would follow along the boats and come say hello to all the fishermen (and sometimes steal out price catches) but there was one male that just had it in his mind that we were always in danger when we would get in the water and swim because he'd come and try to lift us up and push us out of the water and onto the boat again. After a few times of us just jumping right back in the females would nudge him off and let us swim with them.

People can learn so much from orca's & they are so calm when treated with respect, now why can't people be like that towards other people? Another brilliant Video Captain Drake 👍
If you had only a few thousand ppl roaming around the planet, in their natural habitats, enough food and land etc.
We would probably also be nice and kind in the same way that some indigenous tribes still are today.
But with billions of us competing against each other to get access to limited land and resources, well, tensions can get high.
Then again, in most civilized parts of the world, if you are hurt, there will be random males and females of your own species come to aid you and rush you to specially built facilities to save you. The will care for you and some of them stick with you until you are better or until the bitter end.
In these facilities you will get access to literally a thousand years of your species technological and scientific advancements. People that have spent their entire lives learning the art of saving other humans will take care of you and treat you with the help of machines, chemicals and skills that had to be obtained in a painful history of trial and errors.
There's a lot of good shit about our species.
Maybe there are other animals that would have a society, so hellbent on saving other of their own kind. But there is nothing on this planet that would come even close to the care and help that most humans give to each other.
If Luna was a human, there would've been an entire swarm of ships searching the ocean for her.
The Orcas just gave up and moved on. Maybe they didnt care, maybe they couldn't afford to wait. Who knows.
At the end though she was left alone by her own kind and the only other creature on the planet that cared were humans.
I love orcas and study them as a hobby. I worked on a small cruise ship in Alaska. I was able to have the best experience.
I watched the orcas the mother and grandmothers teaching their young how to hunt a sea lion. They came so close to the boat and I was wanting to jump in so bad and touch them. But I was able to explain to the other fellow passengers what the orcas was doing.
That lady swimming is brave as hell!!!!!! Even if I am certain they have no harmful intention, I wouldn't be able to help but panic!
As a reminder, DO NOT play with an orca that comes to your boat. DO NOT let them form a connection with humans. This is what caused Luna to die. Being around boats is not safe for these animals and they dont understand that one wrong move around a boats propeller means death for them. Do the right thing and dont interact with them.

It's heartbreaking. But humans can't have nice things. In the case of Luna though, she was allegedly killed. And not by accident. Cuz the whole situation was becoming a hassle for the local gov't. The natives wanted to lead Luna back to open waters where she could find a pod, but the gov't wouldn't allow it. You can see from Luna's behavior that she just wanted love and attention. The way those rivers and estuaries are set up, they're like mazes. At some point Luna had gotten separated from her pod. More often than not, when humans try to help, we do more harm than good.

The ocean would become such a dangerous place, since they would be intelligent enough to knock over surfers and small boats.

They are very playful in the waters on the PNW. The J, K, and L pods are locals and most of us in the area grew up with them in our waterways. We were never afraid to swim with them in Port Gardner bay, until the banned us from having contact with them in 2001.
I wish we could be "Doctor Doolittle" for a while to be able to properly communicate with these wonderful creatures. I fear the Human side of the conversation would be mostly apologies.

A baby Orca got himself into trouble a couple of years ago we did what we could to try and reunite Toa with his family but failed sadly he passed away Toa the baby Orca will always be remembered and loved❤️.. RIP Toa... thank you from NZ 🙏🇳🇿

This would be a once in a lifetime accurance. Something I will cherish until my dying day! They are some of my favorite, along with dolphins, sea mammals. When Keiko was here at the Newport aquarium my son's class took a field trip there. I'm pretty small and was able to get right up to the look right in his eyes. He stayed there looking right into my eyes for several seconds, maybe more. The announcer lady said that he loved to hone in on small blondes as she said like he's doing to this lady right here. That was me. It was like he could see my soul and I could see his. We couldn't have been any closer. It was Amazing!! I'll NEVER FORGET IT! I cried and cried when I heard they were sending him to the frigid waters of a sheltered cove in Iceland with limited human interaction. I knew what the outcome would be. Although they took him out with the boats to meet other pods of wild orcas, he followed the boats back to the safety of his bay. All he'd ever known was people and that's all he wanted. Plus his body wasn't accustomed to the frigid waters of Iceland. Shortly afterwards he developed pneumonia and died from the change in water temperature and it and I believe loneliness played a big part in that. He totally Loved people and that's where he longed to be, day and night. Even when the wild orcas were right there. He wanted to be with the people. I just posted this and he's been gone for many years fed daily It WOULDN'T have made a difference to him. The other two orcas would have stayed Right with him. He Totally Loved People and would have stayed with them no matter what the outcome would've been. He thought he was a rather large human and that's where he wanted to stay until he got sick in his bay in Iceland with pneumonia. Sheltered Bay in Iceland. He'll always be so very Special!! ❤💔💔. He'll Always Be So Special, ALWAYS!!!

A little late, but wanted to say that I saw Keiko twice when I was a kid and he definitely was special and extremely smart. He copied what I did, since I loved the movie Free Willy, I decided to wave and stick my tongue out at him, XD and he did it back to me every time, lmao. I always felt a huge connection to him indirectly, because I live in Seaside, Oregon and very close to Astoria, Oregon, as well as the Hammond Marina (the place where Free Willy jumps to his freedom at the end), (3 of the locations Free Willy was filmed at). I was also heartbroken when I found out he died and as much as I don't really trust Sea World and some other zoo type places (whether it be a normal zoo or an aquarium) anymore, due to stories of abuse, I do think setting him free backfired. I think the people had good intentions by letting him go, but unfortunately he didn't know how to survive in the wild and they didn't exactly do anything to teach him how to survive in the wild either, they kind of just expected him to know how to, which is a shame. (I don't think all zoos or aquarium's are bad and I think the ones that make efforts to rescue animals and rehabilitate them are great, but unfortunately I've witnessed some pretty bad places myself as well as heard a lot of bad stories about some places, so I'm more weary of places like this now).

I love them even though its a bit scary to be that close to a bunch of whales. Went whale watching and the orcas breached one at a time like orchestrated dance. They were swimming in a line by size. The baby orcas were pink and white instead of the gold baby color. They are related to domains. I had about 5 dolphins push me toward shore when a shark appeared at Jersey Beach. They're so lovely and kind to us. One orca could do a big boat in and they choose not to. They love seeing us , the same way that we love them. However, don't go SCUBA DIVING. they know we can't live in water and they will try to make you leave.

I miss the ocean so so much! I've never been on a boat in the ocean once. In the early 70's we went to Orlando once a year for a couple years. Coming into Daytona beach ill never forget seeing the ocean for the first time in my life. We were going up amd down the street nearing the ocean. On top of one little hill, suddenly there was the Atlantic ocean. That sight is burned in memory forever. All i could utter was "wow" in absolute awe, seeing this vast amount of water for the first time in my life. I was in the water all day. I remember the salt water stinging my eyes. When we got back home that evening, i wemt to bed, and could still feel the constant out flow of the water going back and forth. The entire time i was so excited wondering what could be lurking near me. It's a whole lot different in person than just watching on tv. Im 63 now, and will be lucky to ever see the ocean again,.let alone go out in a boat! What i wouldn't give to do that just once! I'm beyond fascinated with the ocean! I can't even remember what it's like.
Why u waiting on homie .. ocean ain’t going anywhere but we are .. good vibes from the west side of fl Tampa over here. Man U need to go back to that exact same spot , or come to Tampa . Life is too short and the ocean is free .go visit it asap . U make it sound so impossible but lovely . I bet this would give u a fountain of youth . Just listening to the joy in your story makes me write and tell u to go asap !

Being on a fixed income, and considering the cost of living, this will remain a dream. I'm happy that I was able to experience my visit to the ocean. I wish everyone could experience it once. Beautiful video. Thanks! I'm skeptical of the repeated claims that Orcas would never harm a human though. They are not familiar with us as food, do not know if it is safe to eat a human, so they stick to their instinctive prey. But just let them get hungry...like every wild predator. The Grizzly Man was cool with the bears until a pissed off gangsta bear came along.
We’ve been interacting with orcas in the wild oceans since the 1960’s and even when their young were being captured in front of them they could’ve done some serious damage, especially the males and they still chose not to harm anyone.
The only orca attacks on humans have all been with captive orcas. And Timothy Treadwell the Grizzly Man did a lot of stupid things with those beautiful bears that he absolutely should not have! Like for example being so close to them while they’re eating & especially during their mating season when the males are extremely territorial and consider any intruder a threat when there’s females around! And I don’t have to tell you how protective the females are with their cubs I’m sure .. Bears are omnivores but their meat diet isn’t particular. There’s a wide range of meat they’ll eat.
Some orcas aren’t mammal eaters but strictly fish eaters.

@@g1967 Yes Dawn Brancheau was mauled by Tilikum in February, 2010 in fact almost 20 years to the day of another incident with Tilikum and the two female orcas who were his tank mates, Nootka & Shanook drowned Kelty Burn in February, 1990 at Marine Land Of The Pacific in British Columbia. And once more in 1998 a homeless man named Daniel P. Dukes jumped into Tilikum’s tank after hours and was killed too! Yet more than 45% of all the Orcas in captivity are related to Tilikum! Most animal experts no matter their field would all agree that it’s probably not a good idea to breed an animal that has had aggressive behavior towards humans!
Also in Tenerife, Spain in the Canary Islands a trainer named Alex Martinez was mauled by Keto a Male Orca he worked with. Not to mention the hundreds of incidents with serious and non serious injuries with a multitude of trainers over the years by other Orcas ALL in CAPTIVITY however! Which is the point. There’s never been a premeditated malicious attack from any orcas in the wild!
@@g1967 If a group of Orcas captured you and your family and placed you all in a glass cage and then take you to the bottom of the ocean so that they would use you humans as a side show for the Orca audience day in and day out. Wouldn't you try to attack Orcas as well?

Beautiful creatures. I'd love to see one but I live in FL and our waters are just too warm for them. Its amazing how they're so curious to come right up to us but are very careful when they do so. I mean these are huge and powerful animals that could kill us with their tails quite easily. And the fact that they have by far the highest bite force of any animal they never make any attempts to bite us in their environment. Its as though they "know" that we do not represent "food" to them. They are in fact the gentlest of Souls regarding us even though they also represent the very top of the food chain on this planet. They never cease to amaze me.
Please visit Dr Ingrid Visser I consider her the top Scientific authority regarding Orca. She's an amazing research Scientist that has furthered our knowledge of this magnificent species probably more than anyone. They know her so well that they even attempt to feed her!

@@Reallyfrmtha6 they much prefer colder waters but yes they can go into warmer waters its just not that common since they are better suited to the colder water.
Orcas can be in any water. I think DeSantis declared them "woke" or something and they are staying away until Republicans come to their senses.
Not trying to sound smart, I looked it up, but there are orcas in the Gulf and around Florida. I imagine it's rare to see them, especially around the shallower and warmer parts of the Gulf waters around FL. One man claims to have seen one in the Caloosahatchee as well.
We were just blessed enough to have a rare pod of Orca visit us in the Keys of Florida. It was late July, and the scientists were butting heads to figure this anomaly out. The rest of us were just thrilled and hope to see them again!
I,m just glad that none of these video taped encounters brightened the water with red die-dye.

I have to wonder if the orcas understand that humans are not an ocean dwelling species yet we are capable of entering their world for short periods of time? Perhaps that could be one reason why they seem so interested in the vessels that make it possible for us to traverse the waters? Not to mention our ability to swim on and under the water's surface by using such awkward and clumsy techniques. I'm sure that alone makes it obvious to them that we are definitely a land dwelling species. 😄
i wondered this too, being smart creatures, i think they recognize fellow intelligent creatures and i think they view us as equals and thats why they act curious and friendly and never hostile.
Considering I have seen and had Bottle Nosed Dolphins try to "save" me (Well one male in a pod) every time we'd swim in the Gulf of Mexico I'd say yes. He must have been the worry wort of the group because I'd jump in to swim around and he'd come over and get under me to lift me up out of the water and back to the boat to push me onto the back boards. After a few times of me just diving right back in the females would come over and nudge him off so we could swim around, greet them and let them drag us through the water.
@@stuka80 more to do with how picky of eaters orcas r, as they r taught to hunt from a. Very young age, they don’t want to eat anything that wasn’t shown as a good source, and since they’re such efficient hunters they can choose to be picky
