Sennedjem - an ancient Egyptian artisan coffin.
The #MasterpiecesMondays of this week is dedicated to one of the most important coffins you can find when visiting the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Egypt.
Sennedjem lived in Set Maat, contemporary Deir el-Medina, during the 19th Dynasty of the New Kingdom under the reigns of Seti I and Ramsseses II. Sennedjem was an active member of the royal crew during both reigns, and he worked for both kings as an artisan. He participated in the construction and decoration of the royal tombs of both Seti I and Ramesses II. However, Sennedjem not only participated in the production of these royal tombs, but also used his talents for the creation of more modest burial places, like his own tomb.
One of the finest example we can find of these tombs in Deir el-Medina belonged to Sennedjem and his family, which was in the proximity of their own house too. His burial (TT11) was discovered three thousand year later, in 1886, by Egyptians workers from Qurna and the French Egyptologist Maspero. It was described by many archaeologists as “the most beautiful and better preserved tomb of Thebes (…) and the perfect example, complete and typical of a tomb for a great family”.
To match the beauty of the tomb, two anthropoid coffins, for Sennedjem and one of his wives, were commissioned. The lid of each depicts Sennedjem and one of his wives in the form of a mummy, with arms crossed over their chests and hands clutching the tit amulet and djed pillar, which ensure the owner’s well-being. Moreover, both coffins are decorated with magical texts and vignettes that feature different divinities.
