    Nothing will ever beat the Pre-Emissions 60 series engines in terms of reliability, durability, and fuel economy. However In a world of emissions becoming ever more stringently enforced, the DD15 is definitely a leader.

    WISH Kenworth would offer this engine as an option to the W900L!!

    @27butters None of the engine makers went to EGR or SCR tech because it was convenient, they had to meet new EPA standards. When you make an engine cleaner, there are going to be inconveniences. Compared to what else is out there that meets the standards, the DD15 is a good engine. Cummins has also put out a good product, CAT couldn't and exited the market.

      from our experience, that's a big NO for the 1st gen DEF Cummins ISX, easy enough to fix that one last time though. Sorry, our engines came out around the time you made this comment. I'm from the future, 2018 actually. History has proven Cummins product was total crap in Alaska, they didn't test for that harsh of conditions and the product failed miserably under those conditions. Every one of our trucks went down with emissions faults time after time. Until they didn't anymore:) A serious fail for their customers, an utter breach of trust and comitment to a quality industrial product. Dumb things couldn't even drive through 6 inches of water without messing up the emissions system either. Total joke. Even my Subaru Outback can do that successfully.

    Columbia. This was back in early 2007. I don't think the Cascadia was available on the market, at least not yet...then again, it might have been. Not sure. I didn't see my first one until April of 2008 or thereabouts.

    Does anyone knows how does this engine calculate the amount of diesel to inject per stroke? I mean the mix between air (Oxygen, Nitrogen, CO2) and fuel, do we know how much oxygen enters in combustion chamber.

    • @tdcdiesel3008

      RUBEN ESPINOZA
      Yes, there are many different sensors, reading intake pressure, fuel pressure, nox, on and on and then calculate time and length of injection per stroke.
      Out of curiosity, why would you ask this question? To get to the brass tacks on how it calculates and delivers fuel is a lot of hours in training, to give a relevant answer in a comment section is nowhere near practical.
      But if you really wanted to learn I'm sure there are some good videos here in you tube that will help. Good luck on your learning adventures.

    Worst experience with your " the best engine in the class"
    Poor pulling power
    Poor mpg
    Endless problems with after treatment system
    injector cupers fail at 370k
    Auxiliary turbine fail at 415k
    Egr coolant valve fail at 300k
    Two Fuel rail fuel lines fail at 300k
    Truck almost got in fire cuz of fuel spilled on engine
    My biggest mistake in my trucking business was to believe all this crap and buy 2012 cascadia dd15
    Btw I got freightliner 99 century with 60 series on it. It's the best truck I have ever had , making money , best fuel economy best reliability, easiest repairs
    Thanks CARB and EPA for making life of American truckers harder

    Man I am so thrilled that Detroit Diesel came out with this engine, it sounds awesome plus the DD13 and the big 16 Litres engines. I can't wait until MCI, Setra, and other buses out get powered with these engines

    Hmm, the compounding thing is like what EMD uses on their turbocharged prime movers

    • @ShadoFire25
      @ShadoFire25 Год назад

      lol, i know this is 2 years late, but the EMD uses a mechanically driven turbocharger and the DD15 axial turbine is exhaust driven and drives the crankshaft through a fluid coupling and gears

  • @shopnutty
    @shopnutty 4 года назад +1

    Turbo compounding is old technology,the aircraft industry used this on the large radial engines ,4 of them on one engine will recover 25 percent power from the exhaust system ,fancy advertising on a old system from the 50 ties

      Almost everything is old technology. Aside from the emissions junk, and the electronics, there's nothing mechanically on this thing that wasn't already thought of by some big-mustache inventor in 1915.

      No one said it was new but that they were utilising its effectiveness to improve the package, yes its been done before but so have most things, its how it's incorporated into new uses that's the point

    When's an engine manufacturer going to build a petrol engine for cars with Turbo Compounding?

  • @336kgf
    @336kgf 12 лет назад

    I worked for one company that had this engine in a Freightliner. 125k on the odometer and it was already blowing smoke out of the bottom. They also had to change the fuel filter at just about every fillup. Not very encouraging.

    @FreightlinerofUtah u mean Cummins has the best product hahahah jk but as a tech i have worked on the isx 15 2010 preprodution engines and the dd15 doesnt look like ittl make it a million miles to me before it needs an over haul i mean who thought hollow cams was a good idea? and whats even worse puttin the stress on the injector to amplify fuel pressure

    • @keyboard101101
      @keyboard101101 4 года назад +5

      jonesd5o 9 years later, the Cummins proved to be problematic, with the dd15 lasting longer and being much cheaper to run.

    These are good engines, but they had issues with leaking cam frame housings, mainly on the fuel rail side.

      Yep. A $2400 repair to replace the seals. Ask me how I know that.
      Also, my jake brake is almost completely ineffective and the dealer can't seem to figure out why. It comes on but it's so weak it isn't even worth turning it on.

    Detroit has been full of it about its mpg and power, when the 60 first came out I had a Cummins 400 big cam with 500,000 on it, I'd pass them on the hills like they were going backwards and still be within a couple of tenths in mpg of them, and I now have a paccar engine and still out pull them and am a couple tenths ahead in mpg, it was same story when I had cat c15, Detroit is full of crap.
