She was very quiet here no grunting… like that 1992 Wimbledon final

Those slices are tough to return two handed. Especially on the forehand side. Have to get so low for them.

This is indeed great to watch this match. Thanks Chris !!
Does anyone have the 2nd R of Lipton 1988 Sabatini-Seles or the QF of Masters 1989 Navratilova-Seles?

Don't think the 88 Sabatini Seles match was ever televised, sadly. The 89 Seles Navratilova match was uploaded to youtube recently, but sadly it seems it's been removed.

I want to find this match for so long. It’s said Jana was leading one set and up a break in the 2nd set, and Monica still put herself together to turn the table around. Jana’s games always gave tough tests to Monica, both pre-stabbed and post-stabbed. Really miss her, and may she Rest In Peace.

THEN.....AS YOU SAY, SAME STORY WITH AUSTRALIA OPEN FINAL IN 1991

She choked from a big lead like she always did. Just like she did many times vs Graf, Hingis and others. Same old Jana, only a moderately talented player, and worst a perennial choking dog.

Sarge Minus you would appreciate that you mentioned 3 tennis legends there s nothing shameful to have lost against the toughest players on court many players have lost matches they were leading against Steffi, Monica, Martina that is why they were champions not because of the easy matches they won but the tough battles they won. I also think that Jana could have won more Slams but hey that s life and she had such a high risk and precise game that a bit of tension, which is normal on big occasions, could make her lost points. RIP Jana ( still Wimbledon champion not bad for a “ chocker” I would rather say a champion!❤️❤️😇😇

Jana pretty much always gave Seles a tough match. Some high quality tennis here.

I hated how crowds were always against Seles before that german m.f. stabbed her. The crowds couldn't stand Monica being so dominant.

They were against her since she was an unlikeable bitch and sociopathic liar. Remember the lawsuit from Bolletieri after she stiffed him out of millions she owed him in coaching fees, when she and her family denied his coaching her for years despite his having the photos and all the evidence. When she pulled out of Wimbledon last minute with a fake injury and did not even write a note until weeks after the event started and after the event had ended about her withdrawal, for which she was fined hundreds of thousands by the WTA. The fake affair with Donald Trump which she used for publicity around the 91 U.S Open. Just for some examples.
Not all dominant #1s are unpopular. Graf in 87-90 and 95-96 was more dominant than Seles ever was and was very popular. Evert was a dominant player for years, and is the 2nd most popular player ever with fans after only Evonne Goolagong, maybe 3rd behind Sabatini. Seles was the most unpopular #1 due to her personality, not for being dominant. She only became a good person after she got stabbed.

Typically the kind of comment that makes total sense among any fair observer of the sport but will draw the attention of lunatics that thing the stabbing of a 19yo girl can be seen as something that had a positive impact. Sickening...

Novotna exploited Monica’s weaknesses so well here, Seles was lucky to get through. Not many players could get Seles off her rhythm. Jana was one of them.

Monica was vulnerable in this match - she wasn't at her best and at some points her body language seemed to say 'I'm not playing well, I'm going to lose. Oh well.' She threw in a few matches like that in 1992, with lopsided losses to Capriati, Navratilova, Graf and Sabatini at various parts of the year, and also an odd match where she lost for the first time to Sanchez Vicario where she seemed very tired. Unfortunately for Jana, she choked while ahead in this match and that really seems to have woken Monica up.
