As someone who has never been to LA, but loves to see the world through the eyes of others, this video was REALLY well done and interesting! Thank you so much for this incredible footage - I would absolutely love walking those trails/staircases/streets - The history makes it that much sweeter! Thank you Jasmine!
Thank you so much for the tour! Exactly 30 years ago, I went up and down the first set of stairs when I visited a dear old friend who lived in Beachwood Canyon. It's so nice to relive that experience 30 years later. Thanks for the memories!
Hello and thank you for this amazing video. I saw part of the stairs from other youtubers, but never with so much information. You make it very interesting, please keep up the good work. Greetings from across the ocean, Vienna, Austria
I will definitely let you know how it goes! I love this video so much! You are so awesome for posting this! Thank you so much for the history! Have a wonderful day!!!
Another landmark that we have not yet visited. You have put together very nice descriptions of all of the entrance and stairs. That is a really big hike to go up those stairs. A really great hike.
Thank you so much! The hike itself wasn't that long, but my leg muscles screamed at me for several days after I took all those stairs! To be fair, I also went on a hike up to Griffith Observatory after we did the stairs, then I did several of the stairs a second time, so my legs had good reason to scream at me. They've become used to my covid-laziness!
No kidding! That must have been a fun neighborhood to grow up in. I imagine that as a kid, running up and down those stairs was part of the fun! Thank you for watching!
This is such a great video! Thank you. I love LA too and will definitely check out these stairs when I'm there next, and the Hollywood reservoir which I used to walk in the '80s! 💗 You definitely got your steps in that day. 😊
Thanks. Great video. My Griffith Park hiking club led me down Beachwood Drive today. I saw that neat little library 5:32. Next time I will seek out these "magic" stairs.
Thanks! I'm working on a video now on a hike to Bronson Caves, which is 2 blocks over from Beachwood Driver -- shortest hike ever!!! But my friend & I went up to the Hollywood Sign, so it was about 8 miles when we were done. Is your hiking group on meetup? I'd love to go hiking with you guys sometime.
@@trexinvert I'm a bit out of shape from covid. I just did 8 miles with my friend in about 3 hours, but it was a slow start. I'll pass for now, but maybe late summer or fall - I'm just starting to get back in shape. Thanks!!
@@JasmineApple So, I explored those steps last week. What amazes me is how much these stairs are "hidden". Property owners overgrow vegetation directly to the stairs(I'm sure the actual city line specifies a foot or two of buffer). Trash cans laid on the path(bottom Durand/Belden stairs) or adjacent to entrace. Cars parked directly in front of the stair entrances(I saw the same "white prius" documented in google street view photo on bottom of Beachwood/Westshire stairs). A big tree leaning over the top of Pelham/Woodshire stairs on Pelham side. You get the feeling the private residents don't want you around. I got lost a few times to find them so I gave up. Last thing you want to do is walk around and ask directions to private residents who want to keep you away from their "city tax paid" public roads and stairs.
@@trexinvert I grew up there and yes, one does get tired of the tourists and the lookie loos. It's a quiet residential area and the residents value their privacy.
Thank you so much for making and sharing this video. It was GREAT. My fiancée and I just visited California for the time last month. While I was there in Redondo Beach for a conference, my goal was to go to Griffith Observatory because I am a huge James Dean fan. If you are ever close to the Mississippi Gulf Coast please send us a message. We would be glad to show you around. Thanks again and have a great day!!!

Thank you so much! I've watched ActionKid, too -- I found his channel from Here Be Barr, who's also a New Yorker and does travel videos about NYC. I'll have to see what ActionKid has going on in LA -- I didn't know he was visiting!
Thank you! Dublin's on my list of places to visit sometime. It was a challenging hike, for sure! I'm in better shape today than I was then, but those stairs!! Not sure I'd be able to do them any better today! While I was there, there was a guy & his girlfriend who were doing laps up & down the Saroyan stairs. I thought they were both crazy, & I was a little envious! Haha!
Great Video! I'd love an excursion up Bella Drive to see what's going on with the new owners of Falcon Lair...they are going to expand it a lot..at least that was the plan a couple of years ago when it was bought...(I'm writing this in July 2023).
Thank you! I'm not sure you'd be able to see anything if you went up to Bella Drive. The back of the house faces the street. It's fenced, so any improvements would be on the hill in front of the house -- not visible from either Bella Drive or from Benedict Canyon. I looked at it on Google Earth. The imagery is dated May 2022 -- it looks like they may have done some excavation on the hillside, but the house hasn't been expanded, there's no pool. I'll keep an eye and see if anything changes!
@@JasmineApple Oh, that would be great! I keep checking Google but since I'm not there I can't discern that much. The plans I saw are insane..huge expansion but keeping the old garage that is the only thing still standing. Cheers!!
There are no public restrooms, however, there is a restaurant just inside the stone gates on the left. They probably have restrooms. I was there during the lockdown & they weren't open, so I can't say for sure.
If you mean the very first frame of the video with the hollywood sign, that's on Beachwood Drive, just north of Franklin. If you start at 1:48 in the video, I show how to get there from the Capitol Record building in Hollywood. You'll see the Hollywood sign as you're driving north. If you're talking about the 1st location that I'm on the screen, that's also on Beachwood Drive, in front of the stone gates. The closest business is the Beachwood Cafe, at 2965 N. Beachwood Cafe - the cafe is just pass the stone gates. Let me know if you have any other questions!
To get from downtown to the Walk of Fame from downtown, you'd take the Red Line train and get off at the Hollywood stop. There's not a bus that takes you to the Hollywood sign, but you could find one to Griffith Park & hike up to the Hollywood sign from there.
Haha! You're not kidding about not needing a gym membership! You'll see some legs coming down the stairs as I was talking about the Saroyan Stairs. It was some guy & his girlfriend who were doing laps on those stairs! They were both in great shape, though, so clearly, it has its benefits!
I'm sure some or all of those stairs were shown in the movies from time to time. I remember watching The Three Stooges Moe, Larry, and Curly using a flight of stairs to escape their nemesis in one of their shorts. Could it be one of those flight of stairs shown in this video that they were using?
I searched for Three Stooges Shorts, and found one with stairs called The Ache in the Stake, where they are walking up a lot of stairs with a block of ice. That was not these stairs -- those stairs are in the Elysian Park area.. Based on your description, it doesn't sound like this was the short you were thinking of, since no one was chasing them. But these stairs were built in the 1920s, and the 3 Stooges Shorts were between 1934 and 1959, so it's very possible that one of their shorts was in this area. If you recall the title of the short, let me know, and I'll dig a little deeper.
@@JasmineApple The title of the short is "An Ache in Every Stake", indeed, and it was shot in 1941. Moe, Larry, & Curly can be seen going down a flight of stairs in the end using a board.
A lot of LA seems pretty depressing, especially Skid Row. But the Beachwood Canyon area is what I've imagined the city to be, with the movie studios attached. Who owns the chickens? They remind me of my hometown.
Hi Keith, Yeah, the sheer volume of homeless, particularly since the pandemic, can be really depressing. It makes me appreciate what I have. I'm not sure who owns the chickens. It was pretty cool, but completely unexpected to see a chicken coop!
I have not - is that the hiking book? I know there's a group of people who do hikes, & a friend of mine has taken me on one or 2, but I haven't read the book.
@@JasmineApple it’s a hiking book. It outlines all the “secret stairs “ of Los Angeles. The stairs were used to connect people with streetcars and other neighborhoods before cars were accessible to everyone! It’s a must read and I think you can make it a segment on your channel as it tackles Hollywood, echo park, silver lake city , Pasadena , Santa Monica, and Los Feliz.
Hello Jasmine: ♥ I loved your video with one exception! You did not identify something historically "significant" to movies. ONE of those stairs, probably the LONGEST one was integral to an important chase scene from a very famous 1956 movie called "INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS" which has become a cult classic that appears on many lists of the best science-fiction movies of the 50s. Starring in the movie were KEVIN McCARTHY, DANA WYNTER, CAROLYN JONES (yes, Morticia of the Addams Family TV show), KING DONOVAN, WHIT BISSELL, and RICHARD DEACON (Mel Cooley on the Dick Van Dyke Show) among many well known character actors. I guess you didn't know that bit of Trivia. ☹

This was early in the pandemic, before there was a vaccine, before there was any treatment, before we knew much at all, except that people who got it often died. You don't have to wear a mask if you don't want to. But you don't get to tell me whether or not I can or should wear it. That's my decision to make.
