TBH i count this as cannon possibility- dimensional rifts are present in those exact spots on the map, and hitting them with portals slice through the universe, allowing one to reach the spots.
The reason why he's not taking the cube out if bounds is because it dissapears when it's out there. You can interact with it still so it wouldn't be impossible to do it

Yes it does, but the elevator shaft is preserved through the load. That's why the cubes aren't destroyed. The loads work like half-life 2 ones.
