The biggest issue with Rory is she never grew from these terrible moments. She just got more entitled and insufferable, she wasn't the hardworking, committed underdog she thought she was. She was just a privileged person, who took full advantage of that. Its good to make mistakes, mess up and show errors in judgement, but the important part is growing and evolving from it! Not continuously making the same error and being like oh well, nothing I can do, still a good person.

Mitchum COULD have been nicer when telling Rory that she didn't have what it takes to be a serious journalist, but he turned out to be 100% accurate. She did completely unprofessional things, such as fall asleep when interviewing a source, and fail to prepare at a job interview.

    • @FionaApplewright

If anything, one could argue that the "no, YOU got my hopes up" retort was better suited for him. At first, she's (and we're) warned about him, then he starts looking really understanding, then swoops in with a polite-tone-hurtful-words approach. I agree that he's 100% right, and she really did inflate her own importance being there, but it still hurts to watch those words sting her.

    • @lapniappe
      @lapniappe 9 месяцев назад +38

How much nicer could he have been? (I am watching the clip legit right now). Basically, he said, that Rory was a nice kid but she didn't have the drive to actually be a journalist. (something that had been hinted at a LOT throughout the series). She was a good WRITER - but an actual journalist? no.. Mitchum did her a serious favour because a LOT of people in authority don't even have the courtesy to tell people this. They blow smoke up people's behinds making them feel they are doing a good job and then when they hit the wall and have to be fired, the "Rory" can't believe it because "I always was told I was good enough." And case in point - Rory didn't as you said. but people often say "Mitchum was mean" no he never was. he was a bit blunt, apologetic because she was Logan's girlfriend and said that he COULD be wrong but he didn't think he was in this case. and from that moment on Rory did nothing to prove him wrong, she just pouted.
Rory's ultimate issue was that she was spoiled rotten. Lorelai did her no favours in raising her child as her best friend. She very rarely was told no, and when she was told no, she threw a tantrum and people mostly often capitulated because "oh no Rory was hurt.". there were only a few times when Lorelei put her foot down and didn't back down that Rory realized she was dead wrong and even then Lorelai never really doubled down on it - it was simply. "awww bestie i am sorry".

She was completely unprepared to meet Mitchum Huntzberger, the first man in her life to not be super impressed by her pile of books and quoting of Eudora Welty. As a result of being told how super smart she was, she saw no point in effort and she was very thin-skinned.

I know when I watched this show as a teen I was so jealous of Rory because she had the 'cool mom' and they were more friends then mother-daughter but my god, now that I'm older I get why it' s not the best idea to try and be only friends with your child. Rory hardly ever heard 'no' in her life and that clearly shows. She just doesn't know how to handle rejecttion or how to handle being just like everyone else in the big world.

In fairness, Lorelai was really young when she had Rory and had no support system. She made mistakes, but there were times throughout the series when she tried to hold Rory accountable (the affair with Dean, dropping out of Yale). The grandparents were much worse IMO; they treated Rory like she was some kind of prodigy and were quick to hand her everything on a silver platter.

I agree that Rory would've been different if Lorelai acted more like a mom. Parenting should include some discipline or teaching your child about taking accountability from your actions. From Lorelai's perspective I can understand where she was only 16 when she had Rory. She didn't have all the resources to learn everything about parenthood.

I may be in the minority, but for me... she started to become more realistic after the first three seasons. She was super likeable, but she was a little bit too perfect in the beginning. Most people go through a rebel phase in their youth and hers just came later than for most people. That's just how I see it of course, I can see how other people disagree and can't stand her. The fact that she struggled to find proper work in the revival was also quite realistic as many people of her generation find themselves in such a position. You can have all the degrees you wish, but getting a job can be tough, especially in some job sectors. Lorelai was always my favorite of the two, but Rory has her moments aswell and I certainly don't hate her.

    1. When she hooked up with her married ex boyfriend.

    4. Telling Christopher to back off. Like that was none of her business. The person who should've been told to stay away is Emily.
    5. Talking crap about Lindsey in the market.
    6. When she thought she was too good for Buzzfeed.
    7. Writing a scathing article about rich people when she's just as privileged as them.
    8. Kissing Jess 5 minutes before Sookies wedding, a ceremony she was attending with Dean.
    9. Snapping at everyone while being depressed about her breakup with Dean. I know she was just a teenager but that was cruel.

I honestly find Rory refreshing, at least on screen. A lot of things come naturally to her - she's beautiful, intelligent, hard working, and people fawn over her for no reason - and USUALLY in TV and movies *those* people end up getting everything they want in the end. But the show also doesn't shy away from showing her more "negative" characteristics that she has (largely because of always getting what she wants); she's superficial and impulsive, often ungrateful, and prone to lashing out at even the slightest constructive criticism. But even still she has that potential, that we as the audience see, to be better. So, for me, Rory is a cautionary tale showing how kids who grow up getting everything they want may be ill-equipped to adjust to adult life when they find out the real world doesn't cater to their whims. I feel like that's pretty rare in media, so I think her flaws make her a pretty realistic, if frustrating, character. Plus she's played by Alexis Bledel, whom I have always liked, so perhaps I am biased - LOL!

Fifteen years ago I was obsessed with Gilmore Girls. I watched the entire series several times. I initially found the quirky characters charming and appealing. Only with additional time and perspective have I come to realize that all four of the characters who were "Gilmore Girls", ( Lorelei, Rory, Emily, and Richard's mother Lorelei) were ALL extremely selfish and self-centered individuals. They really weren't all that charming after all, because after all the witty quips had been said, the fallout of their behavior was a trail of very hurt people left in their wake. To be honest, eventually I found them boring. Self-centered people are ultimately not interesting and there was little or no character growth on this show. Selfishness really doesn't wear well over the long haul.

Unpopular opinion. I loved the revival. Rory’s character development was realistic. Many of us become our mothers. No matter how educated we become. Our insecurities are real. The underdog narrative never really fit her or her mother. It was the narrative Lorelai created. So she could justify running away from home. Lorelai was the selfish one. She confused Rory about who she was and what they represented. When Rory picked privilege the audience couldn’t relate to the wanna be under dog. Lorelia needed an identity to fit into Stars Hallow sea of characters. The outgoing teen mom who rejected wealth with the book worm daughter fit. Until Rory picked wealth. Nothing wrong with that.

  • @liciayasmim7039
    @liciayasmim7039 9 месяцев назад +16

Unpopular opinion: I think she was right to take a break. If you think about it, she has always had a toxic relationship when it comes to academic validation, where she always needs to be the best otherwise she ends up freaking out and having an identity crisis, we can see this well before she gives up, so much so that she ends up crying exhausted in Dean's arms. I think she was right to question a career as a journalist because she decided to do it when she was only 4 years old, so maybe she started to realize that she could be better at something else and that's completely normal, after all, many people end up changing careers as they get older and see the best path forward. In fact, it is possible to see that she was already facing difficulties at the newspaper long before leaving college, as her articles were not published and were considered boring, and she needed to appeal and be mean to impress the editor. She also didn't bother to venture out and look for internships like the others during the break (lagging behind the others) and I think Mitchum's comment was just the tip of the iceberg that had been forming inside her head for some time. In the conversation she had with Lorelai when she said she was going to take a break, she clearly says that she just wants to decide which path to take from now on, as she didn't want to waste time in college watching everyone else have a direction while she was lost and confused, and I always interpreted that she was basically saying that she intended and wanted to go back to college, but maybe not as a journalist and that she just needed some time to think about it. In the revival we can all see that her career didn't work out and she finds herself again aimless (in the same way she was when she dropped out of college) but she ends up discovering herself as a writer and decides that's what she wants, I think if she had really had time to think could have realized this sooner and gone back to college in search of a different path. Honestly, I think it's really sad how she was judged by her mother and Jess. I never liked the way he yelled at her because he changed a lot in that time and became a different person so I never understood why he seemed to see and expect Rory to stay the same. She also changed and became a different person and he was definitely not the one who knew her best.

I agree with you on the taking some time off. I think she needed to take some time off to reflect. However, I think Jess was justified in telling her to go back to school because at that point, she’s not reflecting, she’s lounging at her grandparents, doing nothing but the DAR. If she was actually figuring out what she wanted to do, it’d be more justified. I don’t think Lorelai was justified in telling her to not drop out bc she needed that time off.

I have never seen GG but, from what I gather, Lorelai really wanted an Ivy League education that got derailed when she had Rory. Lorelai was justified to be angry -- I mean, tuition ain't cheap -- but it does seem vicarious. She seemed to put a lot of pressure on Rory and her lack of acceptance that she could take some time off upset me.
I go to Queen's University, which is also very prestigious. I had to leave the first time I attended due to stress, depression, burnout, and simply not being ready. (I did not drop out, per se; I was required to withdraw for a year.) Attending classes seemed like an exercise in futility. My OSAP became an income. Now with my debts repaid, I am back after a 17-year absence, readier than ever, and I am enjoying it a lot more and thriving.
University is not for everyone right away, even someone with incredible intelligence. I'm going to get my Bachelor of Arts when I'm 40.

Back when I first saw Gilmore Girls, I thought when Mitchum Huntzberger told Rory that’s she didn’t have what it takes to be journalist,
    he was being mean.
But I’ve since realized, he was right. Especially after rewatching the show, to many times to count.
And it really shows in the revival.

Rory reminds me of a G&T kid I knew in a 6th grade who knew everything, had to have the highest grade, couldn't let anybody else have a turn, and worse. When we switched the curriculum to one of more problem solving, she didn't do very well. Some high achievers can't handle criticism, and can't understand that the world doesn't revolve around them.

    1. Lorelei acted like a friend instead of a parent and always made excuses for Rory’s actions. This makes Rory confused when her mom finally tries to parent her.
    2. She doesn’t have a stable dad in her life. Her dad comes and goes, and also behaves like a friend than an actual parent. So it’s not shocking that Rory has no idea how to keep a stable relationship and spirals when her own boyfriend says “I love you” to her.
    3. Yes she wanted a top education, but her biggest mistake was going to that school to begin with. Chilton doenst give a crap about the students and their livelihoods. They only cared about grades and their prestigious reputation. So much so, that the students were not allowed to fail or make mistakes. They had to be perfect all the time. And they were stuffed with so much homework and rules that they were basically choking.
This formula is why Rory ends up spiraling into toxic habits. shes burnt out and has no direction. She has no transferable skills other than studying. She doesn’t learn from her mistakes becuase she wasn’t allowed to make mistakes. And when she finally has to take accountability, all Rory has to do, is keep good grades and look innocent so that someone will coddle her and sweep those mistakes under the rug.

Gilmore girls started like a simple sitcom like friends where almost everything is warm and fuzzy but Rory's character arc took the path it might have taken if someone was in her shoes. Realistically someone can become a scholar from here or a struggler. She became the latter and the show took the brave approach. I might not support what she does but somehow I might have turned out like her. Anyone rather could have been her. Anyways I love Lorelei's journey more. So all those terrible storylines didn't actually happen and the viewers could se what REALLY went down in the Star Hallow Universe. Here’s my understanding of Lorelei and Rory: Lorelei felt suffocated amongst people of the same class and riches as her knowing she couldn’t stand out and her need to always be different and better. So she got her chance to run to a small town where people make in a year what her father makes in an hour.
She and her daughter were seen as special, Lorelei loved that she didn’t have to work so hard to stand out amongst the “poor people” but made the mistake of re-introducing Rory to the world of the rich because subconsciously, she still loved the benefits she got from being a wealthy blue blood.

I think their whole mother-daughter relationship had big problems. Lorelei was so worried about being her mom that she leaned too hard the other way. Lorelei is NOT special for sacrificing to give her daughter a better life. It's what parents do. Yes it can get hard but that kid didn't ask to be born. If you have to struggle to give them the life they deserve then you do it. No special prizes. She should be commended for all her hard work. Not martyred the way she does.
Rory makes some absolutely horrid relationship decisions in her life. They treated her too special and now she expects every situation in life means she's still special, it should be easy, and she should get what she wants.
There is a whole lot those two could have worked on to not end up where they did. It was never a favorite show of mine.

0:40 So, this is something that bothered me looking back. Yeah, it's true that extra circulars would help to achieve a better position at a college like Harvard and Yale. But I never understood why Rory thought she had to do everything at once.
Not to mention she technically already has a background for extra circulars around stars hollow. She helps at her mother's inn (forgot if she was paid or if she volunteered, but if the latter then that would cross off her volunteer stuff), as well as organizing and helping out parties and weddings at said inn. There are also plenty of carnivals and festivals around Stars Hollow that Rory and Lorelei participate in. While a lot of said festivities are further in the seasons like the living art or the winter carnival, that means there were plenty of other events that Rory and her mom participated in and helped out. While it's not clear when the two began to start helping out in these events, there had to at least be a history as the pair are familiar with these charities.
So by the logic, Rory would more than likely have plenty of experience in volunteering and community service in her home town which she could use on her application. Does she not think working charity and home town events count as EC's for a prestigious school like Harvard?

But, a big but, I hated her in AYITL. Rory and most of others were portrayed like time froze. You can be immature at 21, at 35 is creepy. So she wrote a good article in more than 10 years and still doesn't understand that maybe, just maybe, she should do something else? She still needs Jess to wake her up?
So sad ASP just decided to make her ideal end even if there is a big time gap, she ignored that Rory should have been a responsible adult, not perfect, but indipendent, she shouldn't be a spoiled rich brat who travelled and lived thanks to money never earned, cheats, ecc.

Everyone felt stuck after 10 years in the reboot and Rory’s surprise pregnancy at 32 doesn’t have much impact compared to her being pregnant right after graduating. Because Lorelei pushed her missed chance of going to Harvard onto Rory her whole life and that’s why Rory never really found herself when she went away to college - she didn’t know where to start looking while living out her mother’s unrealized dream life

Rory’s gifts, deficiencies, personality and choices- they’re all the products of script writers. She’s a character in a fictional story. Even with the same background, Rory could have turned out to be very different, depending on the writers’ moods and the demands of the producers and the network. I was very disappointed in the character arc chosen for Rory, particularly her “surprise” ending.

1:45 This might be a bit of a bias, but I don't count this as a Rory Moment. Honestly, I side with Rory on this one. You can tell she is struggling and it's clear she has actual ambition about this book series that she wants to write. And I admire her for wanting to do this, as it could be a great way to close off her series and be an inspiration to every young girl (Plus a little neat throwback to the original series). I actually hated Lorelai in this scene for how dismissive she was.
Like, okay, I get it. It's your life your daughter is writing about, and maybe there are some things you don't want others to know or are scared people will read it and look at you terribly (Which, fair that can happen when it comes to autobiography's), but at the same time, why does she care?! Like, Lorelai is supposed to be this person who doesn't value other people's opinions of her, we see that throughout the series, so why would she suddenly care what strangers think? And if she is that upset that she will be judged, why not compromise and ask Rory to just make it a non-fiction book based off of her family but change their names and appearances? She didn't have to outright reject the book right away, she could have talked about it with Rory.
"I understand. I always understand." Like, no you don't! Your daughter is struggling with keeping a job in a profession she clearly has no more ambition for because you ingrained into her head she had to be a journalist, even though it's clear she is not happy about her profession and finding no meaning in it! She finally gets an inspiration to do something she is actually excited about, and instead of being an adult, which you are at this point, and talking it over to learn more and see if you can get some sway on the narrative, you shot her down because you're scared of how strangers will perceive you! Something you never had a problem with before, so why now?! This is like the whole Rory dropping out of Yale thing! Instead of talking it over with Rory and finding a middle ground, Lorelai threatens her that she has to go back or she won't go home. She never gives Rory the chance to try new things or to figure out her own path. If she really understood, she would try and consult Rory about the idea of this book series.
(Side note, I think you should also consider making a top ten list of Lorelai Gilmore moments that make us want to rage quit as well, because i think she has an equal if not more moments than Rory does.)
3:00 I will be a Dean defender until I die. I admit, Dean may not have been the perfect match for Rory later on, but you can't deny he was a good first boyfriend. He had his faults, but he wasn't a bad person! I think a lot of people tend to forget that in season 1, he actually was a well rounded guy who did read the books Rory gave to him, tried to keep up with Rory and her mom. Yeah, he made mistakes but what teenage boy doesn't in their first relationship. Same with Rory, she made mistake which lead to their first break up. But they managed to communicate in the end. Dean only got worse when Jess entered the scene in season two, which I don't think a lot of people really piece together.
Jess comes along as he's basically Dean 2.0, but with a more aggressive attitude and terrible homelife, yet he is intellectual and well read. So he has the personality of Dean but the smartness of Rory, which of course makes her more attracted to him than Dean. Dean's character takes a nose dive in seasons two and three, and I think the writers did it as a means to make an excuse for people to want to root for Rory to be with Jess, since it was apparent the two actors had great chemistry and were even dating as well. And yeah, Dean does get worse as the seasons continue to go on, but again I mainly blame the writers for his inconstant personality changes.
And honestly, Rory did treat Dean like trash when Jess came along. Yeah, Dean was a bit aggressive and possessive, but again that is more on the writers fault and the bringing up on Jess's character. Rory really hurt Dean by playing with his feelings as she was pinning over Jess, especially when she skipped her mother's college graduation just to go see him in New York and trash / slut-shamed Shane just for being with him. And don't even get me started on what happened in season four. Nor get me started on Paul either, poor Paul deserved better.
4:20 Once a cheater, always a cheater. It's bad enough Rory ended up having an Affair with Dean when he was married to Lindsey, but she ends up doing the exact same thing ten years later with Logan, who is engaged. The only difference is, there will not be any retribution unlike with Lindsey. Logan's fiance will most likely never find out what happened (unless the baby Rory has is Logan's and she ends up telling the father), and will continue on with her life as a trophy wife for Logan. And even though we never know who Logan is married to, much like Lindsey we sympathize with her because it's clear her fiance does not truly love her and she will most likely be in an unhappy marriage. And even if she does find out about the affair, I doubt she would even divorce Logan because she might not have the ability or power to, since it's possible this engagement was a setup between Logan's family and his fiance. No sympathy for Rory on this one, the real victims here are Paul and Logans fiance.

Rory makes it VERY difficult for all the onlies who work for what they want without having things handed to them. I'm as mad as Lorelai was about Rory throwing away everything. Maybe Rory needed to watch The Andy Griffith Show to find out how to stand on her own. Maybe she would have thought better of the consequences. I really like Emily's moment of calling her a spoiled only child even though this is a blanket statement and not always true.

Rory is the best example for the saying still waters run deep… and filthy. She’s like the most unexpected villain ever

Both of the main characters had me rage quite, but I still wanted to watch it. So I would go back to watch.
