    What if they changed Mack's backstory from being a robot son who was created "just cause" to being a robot recreation of a living son that Mr. Heartford had but lost due to illness in the past. Everything else leading up to the reveal could be more or less the same, but it would help to explain why Mr. Heartford wouldn't make an army of robots, because he only ever wanted his son back and doesn't want to see him die again. Then Mack's character could struggle with whether he is the same person as the person e was based on or whether he was something different, and you could keep the thread of him devaluing his own life because he figures he can be rebuilt. I think this could've made for some good drama and touching father son moments between the Mack and his dad.
    I know this may be a bit darker than Rangers typically went but seeing as RPM started with the red ranger's brother dying I don't think it would have been totally outside the realm of possibility.

    • @onijester56
      @onijester56 5 лет назад +39

      More-so on that, Mr. Heartford was so preoccupied with his job/lifestyle that he was not there when his son died. This could foster the weak team dynamics and weaker will of the team as a sort of mirror: just as Mr. Heartford once valued his work over his own family, the Ranger team he calls together values their own individual lives over their metaphorical family and the larger purpose this gives to their lives.
      Just as Mr. Heartford had to find a larger purpose or goal in his life than being a goddamn real-life Indiana Jones, so too must Operation Overdrive find their own purpose/meaning/whatever in protecting the world from a great and powerful evil. Which then emphasis is given to seemingly-cut character-interaction scenes and continued development from previous episodes so that those elements, well, are included in the show. Even give a clip-show episode where the Rangers recount each others' involvement and contributions to the team as a means of motivating them to go back to being Rangers and actually engaging in their mission.
      And all the while, giving time to Mack's "secret".

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  5 лет назад +44

      This thread, these ideas, are incredible! And honestly, several of them are still plausible, even though we'll likely never get a confirmation one way or the other. Mr. Hartford lied about Mack's true nature his whole life. Who knows what other skeltons he's hiding in the closet, figuratively or literally.

      I like the idea but Power Rangers tends to be a bit darker and has better writing in only 2 situations. 1) When the series is about to be cancelled like In Space or RPM. 2) When the brand is about to go over to another company like Time Force was the last season before going over to Disney. Both the writers and show runners for those 3 seasons said that those circumstances allowed them to do more.

    I think this season gave a group of young people that were clearly adults with successful careers and jobs, but then had them all act like children, fight each other like children, and quit the team like children, children who also before being brought together had no relationship with each other and certainly were not siblings to one another. Other vehicle series like RPM and Lightspeed Rescue and SPD, though their rangers were young, they came off as mostly adult like when the squabbled, dealt with personal doubt, and they weren't a group of adopted spoiled siblings to a rich guy, but acted like friends and comrades, a acted like adults enlisted into a mission important to the future of mankind and the protection of all the know and love.
    Overdrive was filled with self absorbed thrill seekers who just want to drive zords, find treasure and be famous, tyzon being the one exception to this.
    Gokiranger in the Senti has certainly proved you can do cocky adventurers well, but Overdrive does not pull it off.

  • @Inkfy
    @Inkfy 5 лет назад +149

    I agree with this. Dsyfunctional is the best way to describe these characters. They don't feel like a team. They feel like random strangers that are forced to do a group project or else they'll all fail together. The main character's conflict of realizing he isn't human was handled okay, but aside from that the characters don't work for me because they're such weak-willed people. All these characters had lives before joining the team, and they're lives aren't affected too much while being rangers.
    The best part about PR or any other 5-man band is seeing how they live their lives being rangers. But here, it feels so off. At every opportunity when the going gets rough, these rangers are the first to quit. When other rangers are willing to continue the fight, these people go back to their normal lives, AREN'T SATISFIED, and then come back of their own free will. How lame is that? It's not even because they really want to (iirc) it's because they kind of just give up.
    Overdrive isn't the worse season to me, but damn was the team dynamic really shoddy.

    • @TheDisneyBrain
      @TheDisneyBrain  5 лет назад +21

      The crazy thing is, Overdrive's characters do have moments where they feel more bound to each other than when they are first forced together. The issue is, I don't think said moments have much to stand on. The LG team cooked together, trained together, slept in the same rooms, remembered each other's birthdays, comforted each other after heavy battles and/or fights, laughed with each other to stave off the aforementioned heavier moments, and also encouraged each other. Overdrive however seemed content with just existing together.

I know that Disney never really cared for Power Rangers anyway; but I recall reading at the time on RangerBoard that in regards to this season, they cut the show's budget down a lot and also allegedly told the production/writing team something to the effect of "Just dub the Sentai footage and be done with it".
    2. Disney also tried to muscle in on controlling the production of the parent Sentai series, but Toei was like "no!"

    I agree with you on the team dynamic of Overdrive. Boukenger's team dynamic was better aswell as their characters. For instance, Nanami(Ronnie's counterpart) was a Lemurian Princess and that was something that the series gave hints of until it was revealed in the counterpart of "Ronnie on Empty" parts 1 and 2. Also, Kamdor's counterpart was this so called Paper Crane Ninja called Yaiba of Darkness who wanted to cover the earth in darkness. To do this he slaughtered all of Innou (Will's counterpart's) former scavenger group before he joined the Boukenger's. However, he left Innou alive because he wanted Innou to be the one that ignites the darkness to fulfill his motive by allowing the hate to gradually build up, even though his former group would bully him. If you compared Overdrive with Boukenger's, it would have been amazing to hear you're opinions on how Disney could have developed Ronnie and Will. Maybe, the reason Will took his job in the first place was to prove he was better than his former crew and took the job in Overdrive with the slight hope of getting revenge on Kamdor. With Ronnie, it's a bit of a tricky one, but maybe, like Innou, Will finds and takes her in like a sister when he is younger as she is an orphan, lost in the forest and desperate for some form of guidance. As she was running from foster home's a lot when she was a child, she decides to become a racecar driver as she "has the need for speed".

    From Samuell's own power ranger wiki: Benta is considerably unpopular within the Power Rangers fandom because of an incident at the first Power Morphicon; four banners were circulated amongst the actors and actresses in attendance for them to autograph. The autographed banners were to be auctioned off, and the proceeds to be donated to charity. Benta, however, opted to keep one of the banners as a souvenir and refused repeated requests from convention staff to return the banner he took. As a result, he has never been invited to further conventions due to his misconduct.

    You don't always need character development to make a good character. For me even if the blue ranger didn't develop he was a good character overall. He didn't need to change to be a better character he was already a good character. He was funny and engaging.
    Characters personalities is what makes characters good.
    Yes character development is important
    But not all characters need to grow to make them good characters. You can have characters learn from their mistakes and stuff. But not all needs too.
    If you have an engaging character in general it doesn't need to be developed .

    The timing was funny on this one, A few days ago, I was having a discussion with someone else about Overdrive. Realistically speaking (keyword realistically not Ranger Universe), these characters, outside of Mack, all had established careers outside of being a Ranger. Hopes and dreams that they had accomplished (Dax sort of). So when they were completely sidelined, it felt natural for them to go back to those careers rather than waiting around the Hartford estate. Many of you keep arguing that that's not what other Rangers have done, but these aren't the other Rangers. I posed the question to several people that don't watch Power Rangers and every time it's the same answer. All of these people would go back to their jobs if for nothing else than to have something to do.,
    Many people seem to forget that other super heroes have quit at some point in various comics or shows. In Superman 2, he quit. Spider Man, Captain America, Iron Man, the JSA, and the Fantastic Four have all quit at some point. Even Bruce Wayne has quit. Some of you will balk at this, but hear me out. The story line that is important to this discussion comes from the DCAU. There comes a time when Bruce Wayne is physically unable to continue and at one point grabs a gun and aims it at the criminal. He grows bitter and becomes pretty much a hermit. Along comes Terry McGinnis who eventually shows Bruce that there are things he can do even if he's not the one out fighting.
    Back to Mack. Mack never quit. It could be argued it was because he lived there, but he himself stated that he still wanted to help. Through discussion with Sentinel Knight, he learned that there's an item that could destroy the powerful being. Mack decided to go after it. He first checked in with Rose, one of the smartest people he knows. She told him where to find the information. It then occured to her that Mack was up to something and she called the others. I'm assuming here that it was Will that trailed Mack, but that's a huge assumption. Even when getting the sword, Mack refused to give up. The others come along and try to help. They get frustrated again (this shows their poor characters better), but still, Mack doesn't quit. He was the inspiration for the others and eventually, as a team, they got the sword. Mack showed the other Rangers that there was still things they could do even if they weren't fighting and they asked Hartford for their jobs back. They stated that they would e willing to do anything Hartford needed them to do. Of curse, I wish that aspect had been explored more. It could have lead to some truly great character development.
    Sorry for the rambling, but I've been thinking about this for awhile now and wished to share it.

    Yeah people saying Overdrive is the absolute worst season ever is like saying Man of Steel is the worst Superman movie ever. It doesn’t even come close. Considering this season tried to respect the lore of PR and try out new creative ideas for its 15th anniversary unlike Megaforce and Super Megaforce which spit and shat on the franchise in its 20th anniversary. Those are truly the worst seasons. This doesn’t compare tbh.

      I might, but it would be a difficult video because there's not much I can say about why most Zords are better than others. It's a unique idea, but I'm not sure it's suited towards the type of top 10's that I do. However, it might make for an interesting topic to discuss civilian powers in a broader sense, just as we've been discussing team dynamics for the past two weeks.

    2:55: "If he's this bad at getting dates, despite his interesting stories and insane wealth,"
    I don't think that's how it works. Not defending Overdrive -- it has a well-deserved reputation at the bottom of Ranger history -- but just that basic idea, it's far more likely that he had no trouble at all getting dates... with women who were looking for someone insanely wealthy. But if he wanted someone who actually cared about him, rather than some gold digger, it's perfectly normal that he'd have trouble finding the right woman with so many wrong ones eager to throw themselves at him.
    3:15: "Instead, what we get is a plain, ordinary, everyday sort of mentor."
    Remember that this came out in 2007. It wasn't until 4 years later that *Person Of Interest* gave us Harold Finch, the definitive look at how to do the character you want Andrew to be and get it right.

    Excellent video, as usual. You have a way of putting into words what my brain is thinking.
    Until I saw episodes of Samurai and Megaforce, I used to think this was the worst season. Now I see it more as the "WTF were they thinking" season. I've never actually finished watching this one, mainly because I disliked the characters. I found out Mack was a robot through fanfiction, and that the 6th ranger was a monster(?) with this discussion vid. Further reason for the WTF.
    I read a giant ranger crossover fic once where it made the OO team the villains of sorts. Don't remember the name, and I never finished it, but it was really good. It showed me that Mack could be an excellent ranger, while it grounded the entire team. Like, Will and Dax were full-on for the bad guys.
    These rangers are just totally a missed opportunity. There are so many cool tropes they could've tried with these characters, like making Will someone to be redeemed or making Rose more like a Luna Lovegood, but they're just wasted. There is a good ranger team in here SOMEWHERE, but unfortunately the only place we'll get it is Fanfiction.

    I always found the "Red Sled" argument such a petty reason for the two brothers to squabble over. Like, I get that Moltor loved sledding as a kid but did it really need to keep popping up? Why couldn't they have written it to where the two brothers hated each other because during their adventure to claim the crown and its jewels, the two tried to backstab and trip each other up in order to reach it first. Which could be why the Jewels reacted in the way they did, because they sensed unrest and hatred in their hearts.
    One mind boiled with rage, the youngest becoming Moltor. Whilst the other's heart ceased to unthaw, the oldest becoming Flurious.

It refused to take risks and as a result, we got a mediocre Power Rangers season, (and that's me being nice). With other seasons, they definitely took risks. Even Power Rangers Turbo, one of the worst seasons according to popular opinion did this with its finale. The Rangers losing, the Alliance of Evil kidnapping Zordon, and the Ranger's base of operation being blown to smithereens. I wish things were executed better with Overdrive, that way it could have been a good or at the very least, decent season.

    At the end you sum up my biggest issue with this "team", in that they really aren't. They are mostly just co-workers that tolerate each other for the sake of the job. There are moments where they feel like more, but that's all they are. That could be interesting if these were interesting characters, but they really aren't. To me Mack is the best character of the season since I do like his story, and his sorta change in attitude after his reveal. Yeah it could be better, but its the only thing from these characters that sticks with me. Dax is awful, Will isn't much better imo, Rose is mishandled, and Ronnie I never really felt much on. I just don't get the most dedicated thing you're trying to sell here. Since even you admit that there could have been scenes that lead to that; but tbh she quits just as easily as everyone else except Mack. The empty trophy is meaningless imo since all 4 have a moment like that. Its not special, its just stock writing because they can't just have the team permanently disband. They quit for generic reasons, and come back for generic reasons. Nothing interesting is really done with this. Its lazy drama that just makes the reserve team look a hell of a lot better and the one I wish we were watching for this series.

    • @TheDisneyBrain

      That's an interesting idea! Or perhaps highlighting Rose's lack of enhanced interest in Mack's robotics as a way to symbolism her own renewed sense of human connection, so not even she sees him as just a robot. But that would be asking a lot of Overdrive.

  • @JadenOmega
    @JadenOmega 5 лет назад +12

    Mack had potential honestly, i mean he's better then the red ranger we get later but hey. I ultimately wished he asked what happened to the other Mack robots though.....Dax......well......he's not the worst ranger i've ever seen. That honor belongs....again to that very same red ranger we get later. But Dax was just......there......and he can be very annoying....like....a lot. And the fact that he wants to be director, he's got a lot of work to do cuz he didn't do SHIT to deserve to be a director. Will......no comment......but I will say this.....he has no sense of progression. Ronnie she's a bright force that sorta brings the best outta this team......however.....we've never really got to see her competitive spirit blossom because of this, it kinda feels like they gave her two personalities they didn't know what to do with. Plus "Once A Ranger" damaged her character worse than it did Mack's, if she was the glue that held the team together then she should've been the one who talked her teammates into staying and helping out the veterans instead of endorsing their decision to leave. Rose is probably my favorite ranger on this team, Rose was fine except the whole teaching her what fun is thing. which truth be told....is dumb....im srry....it is....only other problem i see with her is she could've used her teacher skills to learn about the team around her, like Kendrix did in Lost Galaxy. Tyzonn is the most fleshed out out of any of these rangers, interesting concept, terrible execution, not as bad as Orion but not better then who came before him.

    • @carlrood4457
      @carlrood4457 5 лет назад +2

      The thing is Once A Ranger never addressed the "skills" the Overdrive Rangers were supposed to bring to the quest. In practice, Rose and Will were probably the only ones with actual skills that were specifically relevant. Dax could fight and Ronnie could drive, which weren't all that specific to the mission. Rose was a genius researcher and Will could traverse the traps where the items were hidden, in theory. However, other that fighting, the returning Rangers didn't really have skills that would aid in that kind of treasure hunt.
      It's probably what the main problem with the episode was. It treated the Ranger's mission as a typical Ranger mission, defeating evil. The quest should have had the priority when there were no innocents in danger. Keeping the Corona and jewels out of their hands was the important part, not beating them up.

    I gotta say, I personally really like Will. The growth thing definitely is a valid critique, but I personally saw it as a person who was set hard in his lifestyle, learned lessons, but struggled overall with the application of them until the end of the series, and when you look at Operation Overdrive like that, I think it makes the characters more bearable if you dont like the series, and more genuine if you do. And considering all the stuff that Will schemed and tried to do, whether he pulled it off or not, those were the highlights of the season to me.

    When I recently watched the entire series on the Official Power Rangers Channel on YT, I really enjoyed this series to be honest, and yes, it's not the best series or anything compared to what came before it, and yes, the characters weren't all great, but I loved Ronny as a character and one of the most beautiful Rangers and I think Mack was a brilliant character, despite his storyline of being discovered as an android being a bit of a let down in that way, but I still enjoyed the series.
    My problem was that they didn't need four different villains who fought against the Rangers in different ways and I think that they would have been better if they had the villains all work together instead of against each other, and the Rangers too, especially at the end when Flurious was the main villain all along, in this series, but just like in the original series where you had the main villains together in one place and working together, or in Lost Galaxy where you had one main villain and then a side villain for a few episodes and back to the original villain again, or in Lightspeed Rescue, where you had Vypra as the main villain for the most part, and then Queen Bansheera, ended up being the main villain all along, and that's just my opinion of course.
    I enjoyed Operation Overdrive, despite its flaws and issues and the characters were great, but I still think Ronny, Mack and I also loved Rose for what she was, and Tyzonn was great in some ways, but I know there were some things where I wished it could be done better, but I still enjoy it.

    I heard Operation Overdrive had a lot of production issues.
    With most likely affected the end result of the show.
    Regardless, I like this series growing up.

      Actually, according to the rangerwiki page of Operation Overdrive. The producers had pitched Operation Overdrive as "Power Rangers meets Indiana Jones" to the head executives of Disney. Which they liked, but was only giving the production of the season a miniscule budget. Which sure as hell explained why the execution of these ideas on Operation Overdrive's season suck. I mean, seriously. The ideas aren't the problem for this season. It's the execution of these ideas that are hurting the entire season of Operation Overdrive.
      Sad, isn't it?!

      All true, but one thing I'll never blame budget on is poor character growth. I mean yeah, the writer's strike was around that time, so maybe that played a part, but a lot of my favorite Ranger moments weren't the expensive ones. Jason Faunt got paid the same paycheck when he firmly told Eric that they both fought to change their destinies and they both succeeded. Would have been cool to see a Red Ranger Zord team up in Forever Red, but I would have just liked to see these actors interact more. I think personal elements like that are more of what's missing from lesser seasons, but especially a few more recent seasons.

    If Boom Studios ever made a series of comics for not just Mighty Morphin but for all the seasons then I would've made comics of the worst seasons of PR and make them better than the shows themselves. Plus I would remake those terrible seasons to start over and make new and good stories. I mean I would've made the Alien Rangers into actual ninjas like they should be!!

    Just finished Boukenger and WOW did Disney fuck up here. They had all the character dynamics, cool suits AND villains from the sentai they could use and they just...I don't even know how they thought Operation Overdrive was ok. I really don't.

      one of the biggest disappointments for me going from Boukenger to Overdrive was that we lost the entertaining Mr Voice and gained the cringe-inducing Norg :/

      It's really sad that the thing I liked best about Overdrive was the suits, lol. It's a statement so perfectly contrary to a lot of my Ranger beliefs and thoughts, and yet, here we are.

    The only thing I liked about this season was the 'Once a Ranger' crossover which I know you have your problems with as well, but you know what, this ENTIRE season has problems, so when all is said and done, after previous episodes before it, it's not too hard for me to believe that a character is able to resurrect power coins, bring back ninja storm powers that were lost forever, travel back through time to get a ranger from the future etc etc, also the last straw for the OOD team for me personally was when all these old rangers showed up to temporarily do they're jobs until they're powers in the morphing grid was fixed to restore they're powers, they just QUIT, without even trying, they all quit and took off while the old rangers LITERALLY did everything, granted they got they're powers back, but the OOD rangers did NOTHING to help get they're own powers back. The way they so easily gave up is disgusting when you think about the past rangers and how far they were willing to go, the wild force team lost they're powers, lost they're zords, lost EVERYTHING, it was raining, it was cold it was dark, evil had won, but damn it they kept on FIGHTING! Or how about that time Wes in Power Rangers time force was willing to DIE fighting off an entire army of aliens BY HIMSELF in order to defend the earth. How about the time The mighty morphin team lost EVERYTHING in a fight with Rita's brother and some other monster, they LITERALLY went out to search for new powers, and they did EVERYTHING they could get there! ALL these and so many other examples before the OOD team that makes them look SO bad in comparison, and none of them were challenged in this way either, making this team EASILY one of the worst in Power Rangers.

    Make Mr Hartford lose his wife and child due to one of the seasons enemies (going to go with Flurious). Let's say he found the crown or whatever in one of his adventures and play him off as a cocky character in his youth. He outsmarts Flurious somehow and goes back home to his beautiful wife and child. Then on a night out of celebrating his new find, with his family and Spencer Flurious appears. He trashes Hartford and to knock Hartford down a peg for his cocky attitude he takes his wife and child from him. Hartford is devastated that he can't protect the crown even. Spencer even tries to intervene but before Flurious can get the crown the Sentinel Knight shows up and banishes him. The knight is weakened for some reason but tells Hartford he needs to protect the crown and find the jewels or else what happened to his family will happen to the world. Hartford snaps out of for the brief moment and agrees but the weight of him losing his wife and child he makes Mack and also searches for the jewels of the crown with no luck. Mack is to fulfill the void of his loss. He buries himself in his work and in turn isolated himself aside from Spencer and Mack. If you're going to have Mack's big reveal be his a robot than Hartford needs a big secret backstory to add weight to Mack's reveal. Not to mention it would add even more weight to how Mack treats his dad when he finds out and how bitter he was. Mack being a replacement son would have much more tension.

    I actually stopped watch Power Rangers after Operation Overdrive. For some reason it turned me off so much I couldn't watch any other Power Rangers that came out after it.
    I didn't even watch Power Rangers from Mighty Morphin', I started watching around Wild Force and Every other show after till Operation Overdrive.
