This song is just a heartbreaker. It's the nice guy finishing last. The guy who even as he's being destroyed says "I'd never hurt you." If this song doesn't make you hurt, you have no empathy.

@@CodeBleu724 It wasn't on an album initially but when the interest in the song went through the roof after being heard on Family Ties, they hastily put out an album of earlier, mainly live, recordings with it on there. There is no other song that defines my story more than this one.
After 18 years I was replaced, our last night. Together we laid in bed, she had already moved on completely but I held her. I didn't sleep. I knew it was the last time I was going to hold the love of my life.
The next morning our daughter and I left to start a new life in Phoenix. Our son stayed with her. In the end, my son ended up moving near me as well. I think our daughter saved my life, if I would have had to start over alone. I don't know if I could have survived my broken heart. It's 19 years later now and the pain is still there, but at least now I know I deserve better than to be cheated on. This song. Still rips me apart. But it also lets me know that I was not the bad guy. In 18 years I raised my voice to her three times. That's it. Never would have raised a hand to her. I did find love once, but it didn't last. I believe that love is one of the rarest things on this planet and perhaps the universe itself. If you find someone you love, respect them enough to be faithful, communicate and talk through your issues. It isn't the sex that I miss, I've had plenty of sex in my life, it is the conversations. True intimacy is enhanced by making love, but real intimacy is having someone. You can share all of your thoughts with.
I wish this song didn't convey with so many people like me have suffered, because I wouldn't wish this upon anyone. But at least music can sometimes help us cope with the pain caused by betrayal.

Born William McCord on 5//28/1944 in Riverside, CA; raised in Westchester County, New York. He wrote hit songs for many pop, R&B and country artists. He was in the movies - Buckaroo Banzai, The Doors, and the HBO movie Baja Oklahoma. He formed "The Beaters" (an R&B=based, 10-piece band) in Los Angeles in 1979. The song originally charted in September 1981, peaking at #79 on Billboard's Top Pop Singles chart. On the chart for 3 weeks. This song re-entered the chart due to play on TV's "Family Ties" starring Michael J. Fox, debuting on November 8, 1986, it went to #1 for 2 weeks on January 24, 1987 for 2 weeks. When I lived in Orlando, FL I saw them in concert at Walt Disney World in 1987.

I remember hearing and loving it when it was first out. One of the early albums released by Rhino Records. The released a lot of old stuff - including the "Have a Nice Day" compilations, a lot of early 70s 1 hit wonders and others who maybe had a couple of hits - but 1 signature hit. quite a few were 45s that I bought as a kid. Rhino has re- released a lot of albums _ I remember getting the Turtles greatest hits. Tommy James had been screwed out of royalties when he was at Roulette (Morris Levy was connected to mob). When Rhino bought the rights - Tommy said Rhino paid the back royalties

I was a confused young woman who couldn’t stay with a beautiful soul of a man, he loved me intensely but it wasn’t right for a few reasons. This song was popular when I left him and I was told this song was effecting him deeply. Then for years every time I heard it I felt him, the loss of this beautiful man,and worse of all the pain I caused him. Shame guilt loss. I hadn’t heard this song in years ,it brought me right back. Hope I don’t hear it again for 30 years ☮️

"He wrote that for the show family ties." That's not true. He wrote that in 1981, whereas it was used on Family Ties in 1985, essentially re-released for the show. So in other words, it was written and produced 4 years before it was used for the show.

I used to think the ultimate love song was Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers with Marvin Gaye a very close runner up, but as I've gotten older and went through a divorce (she left me for another man) I've grown to think it would be hard to knock this off my #1 list. I know very well how it feels to lose a soulmate to another and I think until one experiences that emotion in real life, you cannot really "feel" the emotions in this song. When it first happened to me, it ruined me. What really hits hard is when he says he'd subtract 20 years off his life just to hold her again. I'd have GLADLY done the same and if I'm being completely honest, I think I still would. Even 15 years later.
