"Time" and "Only wanna be with you" Are another two amazing Hootie songs you have to check out from this same Album! "Hold my hand" is another notable mention i forgot to add Thank you Reagan! ;)
He isn't Hootie. The band name came from 2 guys they knew in college. They nicknamed one guy Hootie and another guy they named the Blowfish because his cheeks puffed out and they said he looked like a blowfish. All 4 members met in college at The University of S.C. in Columbia S.C. . They use to play the local bars and I use to catch them playing in Five Points back in the day. Originally it was just Darius and Mark. The two use to play acoustic sets. After adding Soni on drums and Dean on bass they became Hootie and the Blowfish. I was the perfect age at the time ( 18- 22 ) back when they were still just a hometown band playing locally. When their 1st album hit they shot straight to the top. They use to play a free concert every year in Columbia for the people and the city that supported them when they were starting out.
I was there when they played at Greenstreets. Even watched them practice on Maryland St. They were/are great. Too many songs I love, can't just name one!!
This song always makes me think of my mom. She battled addiction when I was a kid and she left me with my great-grandparents so she could keep me safe. She weaved in and out for my childhood until I was an adult and then due to a series of events she has become more of a permanent fixture. Even as a kid I understood she was having a hard time. So the lyrics of this song always gets me because I def think of her . She has been sober for over 15 years and I'm so PROUD.
That is so awesome. We are all humans…And we all need help sometimes. Hopefully you can forgive your Mom…it truly was not something she could fully control as you know. I am just glad in a moment of clarity she got you to safety. I hope you all build beautiful memories together for the rest of your lives. Good luck
good for her. there was a lot of alcohol in my family growing up and it happened to me at age 18. now I have been sober 42 1/2 years I am now 69 and enjoying life , my 2 daughters and 2 beatiful grand children
@Melvin Smiley I came back to tell you thank you for this comment . We spent the last 15 years doing so and creating memories and she got to meet her first grandson and spends lots of time with us. 5 months ago , she transitioned unexpectedly. And I have been deep in my grief because I miss her so much. But I am so so happy that we did have our time , we did have our healing and our love for one another. I forgave her so long ago and I'm so happy I understood that and made the space to have her a part of my life. So thank you for this comment because it led me back to thinking about this song and my love for her.
@Wally Tverstol congratulations for your sobriety and I am so happy you are cherishing your time with your family and loved ones. I hope they know just how amazing and wonderful you are and cherish those moments. My mom passed away back in September and I miss her so much . Stories like these make me smile though and I am so happy your family and grandchildren have you. ❤️

I heard this song so much as a kid that I didn't really listen to the lyrics. I listened to this about 6 months ago after not hearing it for close to 20 years. Its a phenomenal song, solid 90s pop sound, and a well written story. 5 ⭐
Hootie & The Blowfish's CRACKED REAR VIEW album is legendary! "Let Her Cry", "Hold My Hand" "Only Wanna Be With You" and "Time" all are bangers! You'll love reacting to those hits!
I saw them in Vegas a couple of years ago. Even though it was a Hootie & the Blowfish concert, he still performed Wagon Wheel. It was a great show. Barenaked Ladies opened for them and they were great as well.
They are from my state, South Carolina! I listened to this song again when my grandfather passed away in April. Darius Rucker and the rest of the guys are a great band!
In case no one has mentioned it, this is from the 10th best-selling album of all time. Hootie and the Blowfish were a phenomenon. They came out of nowhere, were enormously popular, and then unfortunately (as often happens) they became something of a joke due to their name and backlash against their popularity. Darius Rucker's voice is outstanding and their music remains great pop rock.
Darius Rucker is on an episode of Daryl's House, and they jammed to a version of "You've Lost that Loving Feeling." You should react to that. It is a great live performance by both Darius and Daryl Hall👍
I remember when this album, Cracked Rear View, came out...absolutely amazing. You just put the CD in and let the whole thing play...no reason to skip around!
My favorite by them is a non-album release, "I Go Blind," which was a cover of a tune first recorded by the rock band 54-40. I think the Blowfish's version is better than the original! Definitely check it out!!!
They have a deep catalog of music for you to discover. They were huge in the mid 90s. One of my favorite songs is "Not Even the Trees", but there are other staples such as "Hold My Hand", "I Only Wanna Be With You", "Time", "I'll Be There", and "Goodbye Girl".
What i love is these reactions make me relive my childhood in a new light. I knew this song, I loved Hootie, but hearing it again at 41 instead of 21 brings a whole new perspective. I get what others maybe saw at that time. But the beauty of songs like this have a new life in them when I hear them again now.
Darius's voice is so distinctive, it definitely unites his country music with the Hootie material, even though they are so musically different. I'd like to see you do more of his country, too. Rob needs to hear It Won't Be Like This For Long.
Loved this band and yes this was his first band, and they had many really good tunes, me and my brother both owed their first two albums, and I still play them once in awhile, So Good 👍
One of my favorites! My neighbors give me the stink-eye when I play this just because of how loud I play it. Trying to drown out my off key notes. Keep up the good work! Love your little family!
I was stationed in South Carolina in the 90s. I remember when Hootie and the Blowfish were a bar band. Always a great show! The band are college buddies and still get together for shows
These dudes were serious players in the 90s. Their first album was fire. If I was ever good enough to build a band, Darrius would be my #1 pick to headline the vocals. Dude is sick with his skills.
Yay Yay 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 my FAVORITE voice ever!!!! I LOVE Darius Rucker!!! I saw Hootie and the Blowfish live in the 90’s My brother in law plays golf with Darius and often send me selfies of them…. Darius’s voice touches my soul😍 soooo soooo many songs to react to Goodbye… Not Even the Trees.. Time.. I Only Wanta Be with You… Hannah Jane… I Go Blind.. I Hope I Don’t Fall in Love with You…
I LOVE this song and Darius' voice. His phrasing with the Blowfish was always so distinctive that it was impossible not to know who it was when he began to sing. He's dropped the phrasing a bit from that era when he began his country career. But I hope he hasn't forsaken it completely.
As a musician (in a band that covered this song) I paid attention to the band all the way through. I played bass and sang harmonies. I can tell you the bass line is beautiful and a bit trickier than it sounds like it's going to be at the open.
OMG, Hootie for the first time? Their debut album "Cracked Rear View" took the world by storm in 1994/1995, one of the fastest selling debut albums of all time. I saw an interview where a band member mentioned "11 Million copies? I can't believe that many, did folks break the CDs and have to replace them 3 times?" So so many great songs. Also check out Hannah Jane, Hold My Hand, Only Wanna Be With You, Running From an Angel, Drowning, and my favorite "Time".
Thanks for reacting to Hootie and the Blowfish! I knew you'd like them. There is so much more to discover - "I Only Wanna Be With You" and "Hold My Hand" are great also. Love their 90s sound!
Hootie & the Blowfish started when they were all students at 'The' USC (University of SC). You could see them everywhere locally all the time. Awesome band, awesome guys! They all continue to live here in SC & are considered by many to be our state treasures!
Hootie and the Blowfish were one of the defining bands of my college years. I absolutely LOVE them to this day, and they are one of my favorite bands, not only of the 90's, but of all time. I'm so glad you found them!!
Only Want To Be With You and Hold My Hand are 2 good ones by Hootie and The Blow Fish too. ❤️ love these and Let Her Cry. Absolutely beautiful songs. ❤️
I took my daughter to see them a long time ago ('94? she was 18) at an outdoor venue in Seattle and they put on a great show. Darius Rucker, the lead singer, is a great guy and stepped out of one of the tour busses, to chat and mingle with us waiting in line to attend the concert. He talked for quite awhile and obliged people by signing autographs and having his picture taken with them. You really need to do the song, 'Drowning', on the 'Cracked Rear View' CD. The crowd roared their approval when they started the opening riff and they (he) got a several minute standing ovation and loud cheers, when the song was over. It's a great song, with a powerful message, you both might be able to relate to. Unfortunately (and sadly), the lyrics still resonate today, maybe even more so. Even though you two are a bit novices on your knowledge of rock, at least you are trying, learning and you are to be commended for your efforts. l enjoy watching you and seeing your reactions, anf thanks for opening the eyes of many younger people like yourselves, who are unaware of the great rock era. Your kids are beautiful!!
One of my all time favorite bands. The album this song is on I used to play it on cassette when I was growing up. Darius voice is so amazing. Please do more of them and his solo country songs. Never disappoints
1994 I was in a pet store just looking around and this song come on in the store, I immediately started listening and almost started crying. Didn't know who the group was but found out quickly because I fell in love with their music and especially Hootie, at the time. Big fan
Check out their song “I Will Wait”. Everyone talks about “Only Wanna Be With You, but IMO I Will Wait is the better tune. It’s about the parents of his best friend growing up. The father was in the military away on deployment a lot and his wife always waiting for him to be home. Fantastic song.
Hootie and the Blowfish now go down in history as some of the greatest artists of their time! I guess as you get older I don't know why I get so emotional listening to songs like this
The entire album this is from Cracked Rear View is phenomenal. It sold an astounding 16 million copies in its first year of release. Thanks guys for opening the door to one of my favorite groups!
This song has been with me throughout my struggle with PTSD after surviving a tornado! I spent a lot of time hiding and crying in closets through normal afternoon thunderstorms and this song was with me! I thought every storm was gonna bring another tornado! I was obsessed with the next storm and how to prepare!
I know how you feel. I survived 2 tornadoes as a kid and became obsessed with them after. Every thunderstorm became a waking nightmare. It has gotten better but it was a long dark road with everyone I knew thinking it was funny. It wasn't.
Oh man Hootie brings back so many memories. Thanks for the reaction. Yes “Hold My Hand”, “Time” and “Only Wanna Be With You” are even better in my opinion.
well guy you have now heard 2 and 3 from Darius now you need number 1 you gotta listen to Hootie and the Blowfish "i only wanna be with you". And btw the look on your guys faces when you are absorbing incredible vocals for the first time is one of the things that make you two so watchable. Thanks Guys.
Darius basically had 2 careers. Hootie and the Blowfish were a HUGE hit back in the day then he kind of disappeared for sefveral years and came back as a country artist with possibly greater success. WHAT A VOICE! more tunes: "Hold my hand" "only wanna be with you" "time"
"Goodbye" was a real tearjerker from Cracked Rear View. I was 13 when it came out. By the time I turned 17, it took on a whole new meaning. When I was a sophomore in high school, I had a huge crush on a senior. My entire existence revolved around her. I haven't heard that song much since . Such an emotional song. I couldn't stop sobbing is why I don't listen to it hardly at all. I never got up the courage to tell her how much I loved her. Every lyric of "Goodbye" ripped me apart and it still does 25 years later.
Your conversation reminded me of that scene in the Movie "Jerry Maguire" where Cuba Gooding Jr's character who is looking for recognition fame and success for his career is approached at an airport by some kids wanting his autograph, at first he is pleased but then you hear him say "NO I AM NOT HOOTIE" which was hilarious. Great band. Databyter
I remember when this hit the charts. When they came to town they were on a radio talk show. The host was at least 30 years older than the band members. He told them the 1st time he heard the song he was blown away. The song was played on Country, Rock, Easy Listening you name it radio stations. HUGE HUGE hit.
I've always thought of Darius as a country singer because of Wagon Wheel and his respect for Charlie Pride. His voice is ever sweeter in this song. Thank you for this!
I used to have a friend who looked a lot like Darius Rucker named Mike. We were regulars at a spot that had two other regulars named Mike. The one who was white was usually referred to as White Mike, one was Black Mike, and my friend became commonly known as Hootie Mike and never cared for it either.
Cracked Rear View was the top-selling album of 1995, and to date has sold over 21 million copies, making it one of the best-selling US releases of all time. “Let Her Cry”, the song that tells the story of a relationship with a woman who struggles with drug and alcohol abuse. It finds meaning in trying to be patient, to remember the love that the two first shared, and stay by her side through these hard times.
"Time" and "Only wanna be with you" Are another two amazing Hootie songs you have to check out from this same Album! "Hold my hand" is another notable mention i forgot to add Thank you Reagan! ;)
Hold My Hand as well.

You both would really appreciate Darius' "It Won't Be Like This for Long"! So sweet and his wife and kids are in the video.
I saw them in Vegas a couple of years ago. Even though it was a Hootie & the Blowfish concert, he still performed Wagon Wheel. It was a great show. Barenaked Ladies opened for them and they were great as well.
Sounds like a good show
You should try some Bare naked Ladies. Maybe. (If I had a million dollars)
I beleive Blurs Traveler was there also
Blues traveler! Another great band.
Matthew Drake Just noticed my typo😆. Yes Blues Traveler
They are from my state, South Carolina! I listened to this song again when my grandfather passed away in April. Darius Rucker and the rest of the guys are a great band!
This sound is the epitome of the 90s !! Hootie and the Blowfish are iconic!!
"Hold my Hand" "Only Want to be with You" ... I dare you to listen to "I'm Going Home" without tearing up.
Darius' voice is amazing! It's one of those voices that has grit but also a calming effect. He is a class act for sure.
I love them so much - have since the beginning. They got back together recently and people were so happy about it.❤
Now you MUST listen to Hootie singing "I Only Wanna Be With You". That song will make you love him even more.
This is my favorite by Hootie and the Blowfish. Thank you
My favorite by them is a non-album release, "I Go Blind," which was a cover of a tune first recorded by the rock band 54-40. I think the Blowfish's version is better than the original! Definitely check it out!!!
Oh yeah, that one was on the Friends soundtrack!
Definitely! They would both love that song.
This was not a small band. In 94 and 95, this album was HUGE. It's all you heard and 4 of the songs went top 20. Only Wanna be With You should be next
Loved this band and yes this was his first band, and they had many really good tunes, me and my brother both owed their first two albums, and I still play them once in awhile, So Good 👍
He is absolutely fabulous in concert! Listen to some of his country hits. His encore was Purple Rain!!! It was 👏 🙀 amazing!
Saw Hootie & Blowfish 2xs in concert. Both times fantastic! Man their music echos to the greats. Miss this bands creativity. ❤❤❤❤
One of my favorites! My neighbors give me the stink-eye when I play this just because of how loud I play it. Trying to drown out my off key notes. Keep up the good work! Love your little family!
"Time" by Hootie and the Blowfish is more an upbeat song.
I was stationed in South Carolina in the 90s. I remember when Hootie and the Blowfish were a bar band. Always a great show! The band are college buddies and still get together for shows
Loved seeing this band live in 1997 . They are amazing live!
These dudes were serious players in the 90s. Their first album was fire. If I was ever good enough to build a band, Darrius would be my #1 pick to headline the vocals. Dude is sick with his skills.
The Hootie years were so good. Cracked Rearview owned radio bitd...deservedly so. His voice is so warm. The band is great too!
MorningCoffeeBreak, Agree. Also, I love his voice doing country, but I truly adored it when he was with Hootie And The Blowfish. 🤷🏽♀️
This is a deep well very deep they had so many hits they were huge everybody wanted them on their show
Thanks for reacting to Hootie and the Blowfish! I knew you'd like them. There is so much more to discover - "I Only Wanna Be With You" and "Hold My Hand" are great also. Love their 90s sound!
Good ol’ South Carolina boys. Their debut album has sold over 21 million.
what a voice!!! always loved this song! So beautiful!!
There is nobody named “Hootie” but I LOVE this band. They are SO good!
This is one of my favourite all time songs. Darius’s voice is phenomenal.
The Black Crowes’ “She Talks to Angels” was the inspiration for Rucker to write this song.
"Drowning" and "Time" have very deep messages in them. I have all the band's albums . My cousin when to University of S.C. and she got hooked on them.
I literally wore their CD ‘Cracked Rear View’ out.. I loved every single song.. glad you guys enjoyed it ❤️
I took my daughter to see them a long time ago ('94? she was 18) at an outdoor venue in Seattle and they put on a great show.
Big fan
It’s got so much Soul and his voice is bluesy..
THIS ^ This guy knows real Hootie gold
People always forget how good this band was/is. "Hold My Hand" and "Only Lonely" are other good ones to check out.
This entire cd is awesome
This song has been with me throughout my struggle with PTSD after surviving a tornado! I spent a lot of time hiding and crying in closets through normal afternoon thunderstorms and this song was with me! I thought every storm was gonna bring another tornado! I was obsessed with the next storm and how to prepare!
I know how you feel. I survived 2 tornadoes as a kid and became obsessed with them after. Every thunderstorm became a waking nightmare. It has gotten better but it was a long dark road with everyone I knew thinking it was funny. It wasn't.
You survived a TORNADO?!?! Holy cow! Bless your heart!!! I would have PTSD too.
Yes I survived it! Took a long time to be able to just sit still through a heavy rain storm! ♥️ Thanks for your kind words! 😀
ruclips.net/video/KOyDmfAcAto/видео.html here's the link if you want to check it out! We were the 5 the house up the road, about half way! 11190
Love LOVE this song!! Darius Rucker is the man!!!
He’s an amazing singer! I love Hootie and the Blowfish and they are amazing live!
WHAT A VOICE! more tunes: "Hold my hand" "only wanna be with you" "time"
They such a great band. The whole first album was fire. Darius could sing the newspaper and make it sound good
"Goodbye" was a real tearjerker from Cracked Rear View.
God knows.. How many years since this song came out and it still breaks my heart! Darius Rucker has such an emotional voice!
J&A, You'll love their "Hold My Hand" and "I Only Wanna Be With You" !!
Great band. Databyter
Please react to Darius Rucker “It won’t be like this for long” you will both relate to the song soooo much as parents.
“Look away” is on my top 4 favorites of all time.” Hootie is the best!
Saw them in concert right when this was popular, such a great concert.
This song reminds me of my daughter. She lost her battle with drugs and passed at 32. Leaving a trail of heartbreak
I AM SO SORRY TO HEAR THIS IM AN ADDICT THE BEST ONES ARE TAKEN WAY TO SOON!!!!
my deepest condolences Robin.
I'm sorry for your loss. God Bless
My son struggles with alcohol addiction so I know your pain. My heart goes out to you.
I’m so sorry! I lost one too.
Rob and Amber: I love that you took your love of music and turned it into a career!
Loved Hootie. The song that punches you in the gut and doesn't stop. I cry every time I hear it.
Love his country song “Southern Style”
Nobody in the band is Hootie. Darius Rucker hates when people call him Hootie.
I used to have a friend who looked a lot like Darius Rucker named Mike. We were regulars at a spot that had two other regulars named Mike. The one who was white was usually referred to as White Mike, one was Black Mike, and my friend became commonly known as Hootie Mike and never cared for it either.
Too bad he didn't consider that when they named the band. Lol
Darius has one of the most amazing voices ever so very unique. He has many country hits other than Wagon Wheel.
We knew this album inside and out! Longtime before he went country! Hold My Hand was my favorite Hootie and the Blowfish!
