Lyrics:
She sits alone by a lamp post
Trying to find a thought that's escaped her mind
She says Dad's the one I love the most
But Stipe's not far behind
She never lets me in
Only tell me where's she's been
When she's had too much to drink
I say that I don't care
I just run my hands through her dark hair
Then I pray to God, you gotta help me fly away and just
Let her cry, if the tears fall down like rain
Let her sing, if it eases all her pain
Let her go, let her walk right out on me
And if the sun comes up tomorrow
Let her be, let her be
This morning I woke up alone
Found a note standin' by the phone
Saying maybe, maybe I'll be back someday
I wanted to look for you
You walked in, I didn't know just what I should do
So I sat back down and had a beer and felt sorry for myself
Saying...
Let her cry, if the tears fall down like rain
Let her sing, if it eases all her pain
Let her go, let her walk right out on me
And if the sun comes up tomorrow
Let her be, oh
Last night I tried to leave
Cried so much, I could not believe
She was the same girl I fell in love with long ago
She went in the back to get high
I sat down on my couch and cried
Yelling, "Oh mama, please help me"
Won't you hold my hand and...
Let her cry, if the tears fall down like rain
Let her sing, if it eases all her pain
Let her go, let her walk right out on me
And if the sun comes up tomorrow
Let her be
Let her cry, if the tears fall down like rain
Let her sing, if it eases all her pain
Let her go, let her walk right out on me
And if the sun comes up tomorrow
Let her be, oh, let her be

If I close my eyes listening to this song I can almost taste the Air of a sunny 90's afternoon... Anyone here knows what I mean?
I do, I listened to this, time and hold my hand every single day on mtv
I still have this CD.
It's one of my favorites.
Yeah I can
I can smell it...
Taste it...
Feel it...
Ahh the 90s
Loved the 90's that was my time!!!
yep, just think if u a kid in the 70s n a teen in the 80s ,great songs in the moments always stick with you, just remember no matter bad n good times theres always songs for you to get by n enjoy life one day at a time.
This song is an absolute masterpiece.
Agreed.
That mournful but oh so rich voice...
Fucker let her cry
Brings me to tears. . 😢
A masterpiece for the 90's
I need this song everyday. My wife suffers from bi polar disorder and schizophrenia. She just came back home couple of days ago. Happens every few months or so and all I can do is sit back with our baby and pray for her safe return
I wish you and your family all the healing, my friend. Bless you.

So hard that absolutely no one knows what you feel. or how you feel. Just keep on brother. There is a better life that you only have to wait for. Let us not forget that God is our greatest confidant and our way that helps us out of every life situation we find ourselves in. Prayers for you and your family.
Prayers for your wife my friend ❤
Different World back then.
Never realized how good we had it until it was GONE?????

I wish we all could go back then when things were more pure like this
Ain’t that the truth.. I feel like I’m in a bad dream I can’t wake up from…
Destroyed by politicians, ideology, big tech and corrupt media.
The information age destroyed it.
Absolutely
I didn’t realize I would have to go through so much more in life before I could appreciate hootie
Man.... what a comment. Felt to the max. I hope we're on the ladder end of it lol
Amen
So true
That gave me chills
You can tell from the songs they wrote, that they must be amazing human beings!
I dont care - this song is 30 years old and to this day is still one of my top 5 go to tunes. Love this song and never gets old.
To me,it's not a sad song, but a beautiful lulibye song...
Lies again? NASCAR F1 WRC Grab Car
I hear you brother!!👊
It’s going to fit in every time of life…there’s always That Guy tries to help her , cute little mess she needs ME because of her trauma, and THEN she does something Effed up, He catches her. Then she cries that he’s all she’s got.. Man he loves her so much it’s killing him. But she does it again and again and again. Except he knows this isn’t his life he imagined. It’s killing the both of them.
He’s gotta be the one who lets go. And that’s heart wrenching. He finally understands. The sun comes up…birds still sing…World Turnin’….. Shake it off if you’re listening to this in that funk. It hurts a little less every day.. AND GHOST HER. For real
I’m a girl, believe me, I have Seen some really humiliating shit women do to their men. And the other guy drops her off a block away from the house.yup, she was with the girls and the “ WINE” made her tired. Then blows you off hen she gets home. And you know she wasn’t where she says.
@@Earthangel63 I’m a 56 year old grown man and your comment explaining this song made me cry. I divorced in ‘98 and remember listening to this song at the time but not realizing what he was actually saying. Your comment explained my situation with my ex perfectly.
Though I know I’m better off without her, the divorce destroyed my faith in women and I’ve never really recovered to the point I can trust again.
“So I sat back down and had a beer, and felt sorry for myself” is a hell of a line. Such a good band.
Agree a 100%
Nobody these days wants to admit their faults or their mistakes; they fail to realize that a man's imperfections are the most human part of his soul.

I dated someone like her too once. Wild, beautiful, reckless, passionate, creative, kind, but also self-destructive. Those are the ones you never forget. An adventure, a roller coaster of passion and emotions. What an experience to learn from as a young man in order to realize what I actually need.
Just went through something similar as a man in my late 20s, and gosh its definitely something. Hopefully in time I can come to grow from it
Went through that with someone when I was in my early 20's. She didn't want to see what was right in front of her and got into shitty relationship after shitty relationship, turned to drugs to cope, and wound up dead a few years later. I'm in my 40's now, and married, and not a single day goes by where I don't think about what might have happened if I tried a little harder, or had the knowledge I have now back then. Some people just don't want to be saved, and that's the sad reality of it all.

He thought I was the only one caught in addiction but we both were. He loved this song and told me it was him singing to me. Grew up in the 90s and thought Hootie & the Blowfish were good. The more & more I listen to this band today and actually listen to the lyrics of their songs, you realize they were actually miles above anyone they are compared to. Everything about this song in particular is just perfect. Darius' voice is perfect for the lyrics, the acoustic riffs, the speed of the song, everything is damn near perfect.
I totally agree! I’ve always loved his voice!
100% agree! I was so young listening to them in the late 90s-2000s and now i binge listen to them everyday lately. I even bought a sealed cassette of this album recently 😭🍻

Ain't it
There are certain 90’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them.
Another song to remember is "How's it gonna be" from Third Eye Blind.
@@EM-fi2qg Classic. 4 non blondes whats up, spindoctors little miss and 2 princes, blues travelers hook and run around
Yes. I feel this statement. 💛
Ahmed brother.
Certainly that 90s sound. Live, pearl jam come to mind.
This is GOAT material right here. Hard to beat this song.
Completely disagree. Listen to more music.
The 90s caliber of songwritting be it ballads, rap, r&b, metal, rock, alternative is just a chasm of separation from todays lyrics. The songwriting is just poetic, real, from the heart, and that is why it transcends time and still applies today - and it will still resonate 20 - 50 years from now.
Very true!
I've been listening to this since it first came out. I'm 60 years old. It doesn't matter, the ballads of this time period are still the best IMO. GETS YOU RIGHT IN YOUR FEELS 💜
@@cynthiadaniels5126 you have great taste in music!

Music as a whole has lost most of what makes music real. I think technology has made a negative impact on it. Also record labels and greed has fucked it all up.
When I was a kid I didn't care for Hootie that much, but with age comes wisdom. Love this band.
Same 😊
I liked them back in the day, but wasn't crazy about them, too. Now that I'm older... Darius Rucker has a voice that can just cut you to your core.
You can say that again
Actually, you're just nostalgic for the 90s because things got so comparatively bad afterwards.
Yep.
This band saved my fucking life, and that's no God dame joke! This band, this album, this song exploded onto the seen at a time when I was out of fucking steam. I was a confused 14 year old kid stuck in a fucked up family, and no one to turn to. Then, this comes out and I just wanted to fucking cry my eyes out, because I knew that I had something to live for.
Thanks for sharing that
Thank God or whoever for music.

One of the most powerful songs I've heard with one of the best storytellers love this man and this band.
My life long partner of 40 years has battled addiction all our lives. Now, when she has won that battle, she gets hit with Stage 4 cancer. How much can one person withstand? She is the strongest person I know. She keeps fighting everyday. This song brings up so many memories and emotions. I stood by her through addiction and am standing by her now. It has been one hell of a life.
I understand if you are religious or not, but let me pray for you and your family. God's plan, as long as she keeps her feet in the dirt. God Bless, Much love.
Even though I don't know you, I'm with you man. Hoping the best for you guys

For anyone who's ever loved someone they couldn't fix, the third verse hits you in the gut every time.
You can't create love. Only embrace it ☺️
Embrace change that is the lesson I walk away with
You can only fix yourself and that; not always. Got to take people at their worth and let them walk out if they wish.
Even more so when that verse is about you...addiction sucks!
For sure.

For me it's my daughter. I sang this to her since she was born. One of her grandfather's favorite bands... May he rest in peace.
Look guys, this is what we call talent.
This is what I call sight. This is open
You got that right! I love so many of their songs, and I love Darius' new ones too. the songs have soul and meaning to them.
Couldn't of said it any better mate. Pure, natural talent.
I can't believe the number of haters on the internet, since he began doing country. R & B and Country are 'kissing cousins'. He has an incredible voice that is totally suited to either. Let the man do what he wants to do, and enjoy the sounds of either. I, for one, simply love to hear his voice sing.
another old song spree once again
88 million views !!!!!! Darius it's time to get Hootie back blowing the radio up!!!
I'm johny I'm 54 and still listen to this song it brings back old memories 😮

That first note of his guitar… tears every time. This song is a one of a kind. Brings on emotions that can not be described. Thank you, Darius.
Who is here December 2020? Still one of my favourite songs ever :)

Still crying to this song in 2023 🥰 80/90s era was the best and so very nostalgic if your in your mid 30s,40s❤️❤️

I really appreciate all your lovely support and encouragement towards my work. I’m very grateful and thankful to have you as a supportive fan that cares so much❤️😘😍✅💕🙏
My parents took me to see these guys in 2009 I think, and as a teenager I just kept thinking about how lame it was going to be. Looking back, it was probably one of the best experiences of my life with my parents and I’ll never forget how much they enjoyed me being able to experience it with them. Nowadays this music is pure nostalgia and i just imagine how many great moments in people’s lives this band must be responsible for.
62th 👍.
Good story it hit my heart what u said ☺️☺️☺️
That’s an AWSOME story. Music can connect people and bring back memories like nothing else. I’m glad you have that experience and the memory to keep with you the rest of your life.
I heard this song on the radio and I knew who was singing bc my mom n aunt already played Darius Rucker country music around me . This song nowadays is just relatable now that I’ve came back to this side of music
My pops.. with KISS!! First time I found out my dad and I had a common extra curricular interest.. 🌬️🥦

70's. But I do love this song

So true!!!
Yes! I love this comment!
Having grown up in the 70's, I witnessed the caliber of songwriters that came out during that period. Quality songwriting. Heartfelt songs with meaning behind the words they wrote. Words that came from their hearts and souls and that touched those who listened to them. Words that people could relate to. This song takes me back to those days of quality wordsmiths. There is more to music than to simply entertain. It reminds us that as different as we are, we share one very important thing.....emotions. If this song doesn't move you, than you may be listening to the words, but your aren't hearing them.
Word!!!
Olga Levin I must be missing something here. May I ask what point you are trying to convey.
Sorry. Using slang here. When someone says "word!" It means they agree with what you said.
Olga Levin Oh, I had no clue. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated!

Love this song enormously. I could listen to Darius Rucker sing the phone book - such a brilliant and rich voice.
You said it! I love everything he sings!
I think you are great, awesome all that jazz
Such an underrated kick ass band! Loved everything about this group that could touch hearts and preform with the very best.
Absolutely the best
I love Hootie and the Blowfish . I think Darius Rucker is pretty darn hot ! Would we say en fuego and his laugh is sexy . It makes me want to bite my finger
ITS ACTUALLY PERFORM. ITS OK GUMP. WE ALL DO IT.
They were the BIGGEST thing in the 90s. How are they underrated? 'Friends' even had an episode with them as a major topic.
When i was little. I remember how all i wanted was my mom when i was sick. Im 42 now. I still get that same feeling but it hurts even more because i know ill never have that. Shes still alive but i had to cut her off a few years ago. When someone leaves you alone in icu you kinda lose any love left. I wish i still didnt have those lingering longings but i know i hurt much less without her around.
This song came on the radio just a few days ago as I was driving in my car. it was raining outside and for real I teared up listening to this. So many memories are tied to music.
Yea and your still here enjoy
I feel you
I used to the rear window disk flying down the freeway just to get away, loved it from the very first .I love Darrius Rucker. I saw them I a club I SO Carolina when no one knew they'd be famous. They came to our table at my sisters request .Very polite and respectful.😊😊
That's what music is about and it shows how truly good Darius Rucker is to be able to bring that feeling out. I pray that you felt better afterwards though.
This song reminds me of my kids father. He battled addiction until he passed from it at 30 years old 6 years ago. We were high school sweethearts and was in active addiction then as well. We broke up and got back together many times and he used to tell me he listened to this song when he wasn’t with me and would sing it many times when we were together. Miss him every day, but when I hear this song it takes me back to him.
He has the most beautiful, soulful voice.! ❤
In 2020 this song still brings tears to my eyes. Just reminiscing and remembering the road I've traveled.
This is one of my go-to songs still in 2020 when I'm in a funk and reminiscing about life. So your not alone ❤️
I been turning to this song alot lately. You're not alone. Stay strong
Love that....
Me too
This song has been a guilty pleasure for nearly 25 years. I don't care how much I get my balls busted, I love Darius Rucker's voice.
Add How Do You Talk To An Angel to the same list.
As someone else said, "He's got a voice like warm butter" Truer words were never spoken!
I totally agree!
Love how this band was just average dressed working class dudes not trying to be trendy and cocky.
Especially with Darius Rucker. I went to school with his cousins. His uncle is a Dr in my town. Just good ppl from SC.
welcome to the 90s
Sev Anderson took the words right outta my mouth, good times man
Didn't sell there soul
Was the 90s
His voice is amazing ❤
This song makes me think of my mom after my dad died. She was a wreck, I was 18, I was a wreck, neither of us were prepared for it, she looked to medications to help her cope with loss and depression, and I didn't know what to do, why she couldn't function, and snap out of it because me and my little brother needed her. Thank God for caring neighbors and friends who saw a problem and helped us all find a better way to cope with loss. My favorite song, but I can hardly listen to it because it is such a painful reminder of that time.
I dont know you but i to fear this very dreadful moment in life so from one stranger to another i love you and i hope everything continues to get better
I'm sorry for your loss. . Hope your doing well and I wish you the best.
I should have noted this in the original post, but this happened 20 years ago, my mother and I still have a tenuous relationship, I've had a hard time forgiving her, but I'm trying. She has been sober for over 6,500 days so she is making progress too. She still has a lot of guilt about that time, we usually just avoid talking about it and make the best of whatever moment we are in.
Ur poor momma, I can't imagine.i hope u are ok . sending love
Brings me similar memories.
This song is still awsome in 2019 and so much relevant meaning to this day
Its what you call a timeless classic. And it will remain relevant as long as humans exist cause weve all been in that relationship at one point in our lives
28 years on and this still hits!
In 28 years for me to and it still hurts
Timeless......hits all human chords...😊
amazing song. took some 'growing up' to appreciate music like this
I miss the 90's!!!

Same thing runs through my mind every time I hear a Hootie song. One of the best bands (and singers) ever.
was an excellent decade
America's second golden age
It's been 25 years and this song still evokes painful memories and a truckload of regrets.
Darius, still, and always will have such a great voice and it's recognizable. Hootie rules
I can't listen to this song and drink because I can feel the pain in his voice, and want to cry.
This was the first CD I ever owned. I was 16, and it changed my world. I memorized every word to this album. Every song is deep and every word has meaning. All music can aspire to this.
I totally agree! Are you a singer or musician yourself?
My music journey has been a wild one. Fav’s now are Hendrix, Zep, Ac/Dc and yes…Taylor swift. But what was the first cd I owned that started it all 31 years ago? Of course it was Mariah Carey Unplugged! 🤦♂️

I remember hearing this song, in my early 20s, thinking about how much love this guy had for her. Now, in my 50s, I realize I was wrong. This man didn't have enough respect for himself to get out of this destructive relationship, sooner. Maybe its the age that jades us or the ignorance of youth. Either way, its an amazing song.

Yes! He is a true talent! Have you ever listened to his country music? not sure what kinds of music you listen to, but if you haven’t heard it and you are open, give it a listen and see what you think! I loved 90s country and older when I was a kid, still do, but I generally don’t listen to as much country from the past 10 to 20 years, with some exceptions, and he is one.
