THE BIRTH OF THE WALL OF CHAMPIONS! The Story of the 1999 Canadian Grand Prix

  • The Canadian Grand Prix has what is known as the Wall of Champions. Which sounds like a Hall of Fame thing but it's anything but, since at the 1999 Canadian Grand Prix, the 1994, 95, 96 and 97 Champions ended up in a concrete wall at the end of the lap. Although- Not in that order. Which would have been spooky.
Now, it's forever known as that, and it's claimed five drivers in its time. Will Alonso, Verstappen or Hamilton be in the wall this year? Who knows, but because of one race, we have something that will never be known as anything else.
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

I am Canadian and I went to the 2008 Canadian GP. I had fun and had never been to Montreal, so about a month later I went back and dragged my bike along.
I, of course, went to the circuit Gilles Villeneuve and did some laps with my bike. On one of the laps I, on purpose, crashed into the wall of champions, figuring if crashing there was good enough for Shumie, it was good enough for me.

  • @ibex485
    @ibex485 4 месяца назад +10

So much has happened at Montreal over the years - rain, crashes, tyres falling apart, that year the tarmac fell apart...
Another Montreal event worth mentioning was in 1998. Michael made perhaps his most FU move of all when exiting the pits and quite simply ran Frentzen (who was coming down the start finish straight on the far side) off the track at high speed before turn 1, resulting in a scary crash and retirement for Frentzen. Scumacher claimed he didn't see but... that's just taking the p... Michael. Of course the stewards took the Michael also and no action was taken for the incident.
As a result (the following year?) Formula 1 added those solid lines we still have now on the pit exit which drivers exiting the pits are not allowed to cross, and which have resulted in many penalties ever since. (They should call it the Michael Line.)
In one of the last years of F3000 (2004??) at Barcelona (I think) one driver was memorably penalised for crossing the line and served a drive through or stop go penalty. On exiting the pit lane he crossed the line again. Can't remember if he got another penalty first, but the end result was him being black flagged and pulled out of the race, on the grounds he clearly didn't know the rules and was a danger to everyone.

Schumi's' '1 error a season' quote is interesting. Currently reading James Allen's 'Edge of Greatness' book on Schumacher and it mentions the infamous Monaco 2006 grand prix and his attempt to block the track and red flag the qualifying session. Allen basically goes on about Schumacher's mindset was all about never showing weakness or fault publicly to create an image to his rivals of being ruthless and having the killer instinct to push the rules and boundaries where others might not go. All about the mind games to gain an advantage over others. There is a bit where Coulthard is talking about his crash with Schumacher at Spa in 98 and how they met at a neutral driver home to talk it out a few days after the event. Coulthard conceded fault but said Schumacher had to bear some of the responsibility since he technically drove into the back of him but Schumacher's mindset was 100% he did nothing wrong. I guess that psychology is part of why he was so successful but controversial as well. Really enjoying the book, I'm about halfway through 👍

      Exactly!
He wasn't the perfect driver that he has currently been made out to be. It's like that since his accident (I honestly - even as a Damon fangirl - would give anything to turn back the clock to prevent it), he's become virtually untouchable to many fans. Especially those too young to have watched him. It's the same with "Saint Ayrton"... People miss the fact that it was their imperfections which made their great races so great.

He made mistakes all the time. I was at the 2000 USGP where he was cruising along and spun in the infield all by himself but got the clutch in in time. He was just one of those fortunate drivers who seemed to be able to recover from his brain fades. He'd have had a much harder time in practices too without a spare car. It was his MO to "find the limit" on Friday or Saturday, knowing there was another perfect car or two waiting for him in the garage.

In 1998 The Michael messed up something very badly in every 2 races. If he had committed only 50% of his errors in that year, he would have been a world champion before Nurburgring.
    1) Melbourne: new Ferrari engine was harder to handle and to operate, he managed to stall the car during his first pitstop, but the crew started the engine again and he could continue - only to have a mechanical failure later on.
    2) Buenos Aires: comfortably leading the race, then horribly messing up a corner some laps before the end, but managed to find a service path and keep the engine running, coming back to the track with insane amounts of dirt.
    3) Monaco: now that was a festival of Michael errors. Losing patience with Wurz after being stuck behind him for like 40 laps, colliding with him 3 separate times, damaging his suspension. Crew managed to send him back, being down 2 laps. Crashing into 10th placed Diniz on the last lap didnt help either.
    4) Austria: Chasing Hakkinen in the early laps to male the 2 stop strategy work, getting impatient, going off track, bouncing up 3 feet in the air, losing the front wing, having to drive a whole lap before entering the pits, exiting dead last.
    5) Belgium: ooooh, we all know what happened there.
    6) Canada: carelessly joining back from the pit lane, sending Frentzen to the walls, getting a 10 second penalty for it.
    7) Hockenheim: messing up the qualifying. Ferrari took a new, longer car design to Germany, and Michael didnt like it. He switched back to the previous design, losing valuable time on friday to work out the ideal setup, ending up in 5th place on saturday. No improvement during the race either.
    8) Suzuka: Stalling the car on the grid.
I think thats enough errors for half a decade, especially from a 2 time WCH

The reason for the big gap between the Nurburgring and Suzuka races in '98 is because there was supposed to be a race at Estoril in between. That got binned off because the Portuguese government wouldn't pony up for the necessary track mods.

Funfact about the immelmann turn, it's highly unlikely that he ever did it, because the planes he flew in combat (diverse marks of the Fokker Eindecker) just physically couldn't pull that stunt of. He died half a year or so to early. Maybe he did some testing in more capable planes, like the albatross, and maybe he invented (or just did) it there, but if he'd done it in combat, his wings would have ripped off and maybe the engine would have stalled.
But it's hard to over estimate how famous Immelmann and even more so Boelke have been on both sides of the war, so it would make sense that some fancy pants (but still very simple) turn would be named in his honor, maybe because it "made even you as effective as Immelmann" or something along that line. Finding out that you can do a half loop and then roll out of it isn't really rocket science, is it?

11:07 1995 I can only think of San Marino crash maybe the collision last race of the season but that was a racing incident
1997 he also went off at Monaco but had a 55 second lead (Lmaoo) so just spun the car around
Edit the next one (mistake) would probs be 2000 with one of his famous “Schumi” chops leading to an instant DNF I believe either Austria or Germany that year

2000: Slow start at Germany, chops Fisichella's front wing and out at the first corner. Barrichello's first win.
2001 and 2002, indeed none spring to mind.
2003: Aquaplanes off at Brazil? But then so did about 1/3rd of the field.

5:16 When you live in Canada long enough, snow in june/july is VERY normal. I think only Vancouver is spared that and alot of it has to do with the Pacific Ocean....Montreal? Oof.

Yeah, Vancouver has the Pacific version of the Gulf Stream that means we have milder wetter winters than what Toronto and Montreal get.
By we I mean Britain. Considering we’re on the same latitude as Gander we have much warmer winters. 😅

Nico Rosberg didn't crashed at the wall but cooked a set of tyres in the runoff of the chicane after locking wheels whilst being schooled by an 18 year-old Max Verstappen during the 2016 race.

  • @harmkuijpers6642
    @harmkuijpers6642 4 месяца назад

I'd say it was actually easier to go into the wall then than it is now. The gravel trap was a significant deterrent for drivers to straightline the chicane if they overcooked it under breaking, so they tried to lob it in anyway. Must have had Nigel Mansell's 1992 off in the back of their mind. Today they just go across the tarmac run off.

The whole Canada as an igloo filled icebox for eleven months of the year is nonsense. The average temperature in Montreal for September is 22 degrees Celsius, hardly frostbite-inducing. Move Singapore to the slot after China and start the tour of the Americas with Canada on September 22, then move COTA ahead a few weeks, followed by Mexico, Brazil and Vegas.
