  • Hi everyone! This is Nikki Burnette, the artist and author of the Spellbinding Images Coloring Book series. Today I want to share a speed coloring video of myself coloring one of my witch images, Coraline, from Spellbinding Images: A Grayscale Coloring Book - Beginner's Edition - Volume 1.
This book is available on Amazon if you want to color along with me!

    Details about my process:
Step One: Use colored pencils dipped in petroleum jelly and color over the entire area. The grayscale underneath will do all the shading for you! Press with medium to firm pressure to create very vivid color and cover up all the tooth of the paper.
Watch a video on basic colored pencil techniques here: • Grayscale Coloring Tip...
Step Two: Create skin tone using the same technique outlined above. Color over the whole skin area with Light Flesh. Then use Dark Flesh to add shadows, cover up the "gray" of the skin tone and make it more vibrant. Use the grayscale image as your guide when placing skin shadows.
Watch a video on creating a light skin tone with colored pencils here: • Grayscale Coloring Tip...
Step Three: Add highlights and shadows using Buff Titanium and Black. Use the grayscale image as your guide when placing your black and white colors and color firmly right over the top of your existing colored pencil work. I also outline certain areas that I really want to pop such as the face, eyes, lips and outlines of the clothing.
Step Four: Add background colors quickly and easily with Pebbles Chalk.

Step Five: Add highlights and details to clothing, hair and background with a white gel pen. Choose details that you want to add interest to or you really want to sparkle. On this piece, I added polka dots to her outfit and highlights to her eyes and clothing. Stars are the perfect finishing touch for a witchy background!

Hi Beverley! Thanks so much for purchasing my book. I'm really glad you enjoy it. =) I don't really recommend using watercolor on the paper in the books as the paper isn't really designed for wet media. It creates a lot of buckling and can tear up the printing on the paper. One thing you can do, is scan the page you want color and then print it on watercolor paper or another type of paper acceptable for wet media. Just make sure to check your printer settings to make sure your printer can take the thicker papers.
That being said, I do encourage you to experiment! You can always cut out the small testers in the front of the book and see if you can figure out a way to apply the watercolor so that it's gentle to the paper. I've done a full watercolor piece one time from a page out of the book. I taped the paper down to a hard board with painter's tape to prevent as much buckling as possible. And then I was really gentle while applying the watercolors. I only used a little bit of water and didn't use the brush on an area that was already wet. I really liked my results! But since it's a little fussy, so it's not a technique I generally recommend for the paper in the book. I hope that helps! =)

So my understanding you can get a two shaded effect by using one colored pencil by going over the grey scale areas?

What kind of tool did you use for the background? This turned out gorgeous.

Thank you so much! For the background I used Pebbles Chalk and it comes with a little applicator tool that holds cotton puffs that you use to apply the chalks. =)

I was brutally assaulted in a home invasion in 2011. My therapist introduced me to adult coloring as a way to help with the depression, anxiety, and PTSD. I recently ordered a grayscale book from Amazon (just waiting for it to arrive) but I didn't know that I would need poly colored pencils to be able to really create something beautiful. There's just no way I can afford these pencils because I have weekly therapy and monthly medication bills. I have 52 pencils that I bought just because they were an add on item for under 5 bucks. Will they work in these books with the vaseline at all? My goal is to eventually color so well that I can be proud enough to frame and hang my work on the wall, but I'm starting to think that my financial restrictions will keep me dead-ended into grocery store coloring books that I use gel pens on. :/ Even buying the pencils one at a time wouldn't help me much since it would take me forever. Any suggestions on other pencils? And what kind of paper do you use under your hand to keep it from smudging? Thank you for these beautiful videos.
