    If you've ever been downhill skiing, there's an analogy with that that works really well when explaining gravity assists. Imagine 2 skiers, one skiing slowly and another skier skiing really fast, coming up to the first one from behind. Picture the faster skier holding out their ski pole, and the slower skier grabbing it as the faster one went by. Then, imagine the faster skier pulling their ski pole forwards. The Slower skier would gain some speed, and the faster skier would lose some. gravity assists work similar to this, with the slow skier being the probe and the fast skier being the planet. Gravity pulls the probe in and then flings them out, just like the ski pole.

One tip for unforseen weight and Ballance issues - When forced to fly backwards, you can right click on the control surfaces and change the authourity limiter to negative 100, or negative 150, and it will now move in the opposite direction. It's saved me a few times. Using engines to regain forward movement is also a good call, but if your out of fuel this might help. Cheers and keep the great KSP vids coming!

    Fun fact: Jool has a radius of 6000km, Earth has a radius of 6371km (average), this means that earth is bigger than the biggest planet in KSP (Venus has a radius of 6051km [average] so if you want to compare Jool to a real planet Venus is a good place to do so)

    • @eekee6034
      @eekee6034 2 года назад

      Kerbal planets are scaled about 1:10 compared to our real solar system, but their gravity is not. This makes Kerbal planets extremely weird. If I remember right, there's no way to make Kerbin have Earth-like gravity with only normal matter of known elements; the planet is just not big enough. Jool might be about the size of Venus, but if you put Jool and Venus together as a double planet, you'd see Venus orbiting Jool.

    One way to explain the Oberth effect is to consider the exhaust coming out of your engines. It's moving in the opposite direction from you, so the faster you're going to begin with, the more of its motion is cancelled out. Less of the energy from the burn ends up going into it, and more into you.

  • @andrewkvk1707
    @andrewkvk1707 5 лет назад

    The oberth effect only occurs in the frame of reference of what you are orbiting. The faster the fuel in the rocket is traveling around the object, the more energy it appears to impart onto the rocket when it is exhausted, because it appears to slow down, in this frame of reference, instead of being thrown in the opposite direction, which is essentially chemical energy turned into wasted kinetic energy.

    I know I'm one of those people who points out minuscule inconsistencies in videos where it doesn't really matter, but at 5:34, the energy gained by the space craft would be roughly equal to the amount lost by the planet. However, because kinetic energy is described by 0.5mv^2, the velocity delta of the craft would be significantly larger than that of the planet due to the difference in masses between the two objects

    I notice this with a lot of air/space craft similar to this, but often times these craft have to go the full length of the runway, if you move the rear landing gear so that it is just behind the center of gravity, you'll be able to lift off the ground without going the full runway length.

    Network card troubleshooting:
    1. Have you checked your IP address in command prompt? Run cmd and type in ipconfig. If the IP address for Local Area Network Connection is in the 169.254.x.x range, your router may not be issuing you with an address. Either your router isn't working properly (i.e. DHCP is broken on it) and you will have to assign one statically, or you want to use a static one but you forgot to assign it.
    2. Run the command (as admin) "netsh winsock reset". This will refresh the TCP stack on your PC. This can fix weird errors sometimes.
    3. Reseat your card if you're not using onboard networking. If you're using Onboard, try getting a new adapter. 10 bucks at any IT store for something basic. Worth getting for troubleshooting, honestly.
    4. Check your cabling. There might be a faulty wire somewhere, or something may have come loose. Unnecessary bends in runs can be really bad.
    5. Disable/Enable the network hardware device in Device Manager. The "did you try turning it off and on again" trick surprisingly does work stupidly often.
    6. Try a new router. Doesn't have to be expensive, cheapo will do. I have several because I was having issues and I needed to prove it was not my network causing the issue.
    7. Check the duplex settings on the interface, it might be having trouble negotiating a speed with the router.
    8. Throw everything in a pile and burn it all while praising the Kraken.
    Hope this helps, network problems are often EXTREMELY weird. I once got a switching loop to occur in Cisco switches, but everything proceeded as normal. No broadcast storm, no switch interfaces going into blocking mode, nothing. Even my uni lecturer was stumped.

    Gravity assists work not primarily by changing the orbital speed (magnitude of velocity vector) but be changing the direction of the velocity vector. Orbital maneuvering is more about direction than absolute speed. Gravity is a conservative force, and all of you who have taken physics will know that this means that if you "swing by" a planet, you will have the same kinetic energy entering the gravitational field of influence as leaving it. (Unless you perform correction burns). Remember that acceleration (known to KSP folk and rocket scientists as delta V) consists of normal and tangential components. Tangential acceleration is simple, but requires fuel expenditure. However, normal acceleration (acceleration perpendicular to the direction of travel) can be accomplished with a gravitational field, because even though the absolute kinetic energy of entry and departure are equivalent, normal acceleration ( delta V perp), has changed the direction, and therefore trajectory of the spacecraft. Therefore you can save fuel to spend only on tangential acceleration where needed.
    The optimal spaceflight would only use fuel for forward/backward acceleration, and gravity for normal (left/right/up/down) acceleration. An orbital slingshot maneuver is the use of a planet (or moon) to "aim" the spacecraft, and the use of fuel to "launch" the spacecraft, and since gravity is a conservative force with a simple equation for force, (Newtons law of gravitation), anyone who has taken calculus can see how you can very easily compute the change in direction as a result of a gravitational field. You just take the vector product of the position/time vector of the spacecraft's initial velocity and the force/position vector of the gravitational field. In polar coordinates, gravity is just an inverse function of radius, and angle is irrelevant, so the calculation can easily done by hand, which the astronauts who flew to the moon and back did in tables with a slide roll (a powerful tool for polar coordinate estimates) to calculate how long to burn the SM engine for.
    I forgot why I posted this, but I hope some random person learns something, p.s. I lead an academic aerospace research team.

    I always preferred to think of the oberth effect in terms of momentum, change of which is of course force integrated over time. In a hyperbolic pass of a planet, there is symmetry around the point of closest approach, and you spend just as much time coming as going.
    But if you let gravity spend time pulling you to your closest approach and then activate the engines, you speed out and away, ultimately spending less time on escape than you did on approach. Thus, the planet sorts of "gives" you more momentum on the way in, than it takes back on the way out. This is all mathematically compatible with the kinetic energy explanation as well.

    (dont care if its over a year later I wanna answer that internet problem cuz I've had it before too)
    When your wifi works and ethernet doesnt it means the modem is having issues recognizing one of the ethernet devices. So unplug them all then plug them all back in one at a time. Make sure that the device you plug in has internet connection before you plug in the next ethernet port. If you plug one in and it cant connect, keep it unplugged till you got some time to plug ONLY that one in and run some troubleshooting on the computer (rightclick the network icon in your tray and click 'Troubleshoot Problems' for us Windows users)

    I think an interesting idea for a Blunderbirds rescue mission would be one where there's a Mk1-3 command pod (with no docking port) stuck on the Mun, but there's a Tourist kerbal inside, and since Tourists can't do EVAs, you would have to find a way to pick up the pod and bring it back to Kerbin.

Also if you get the graphics to as low as possible it's better to render and have it still goin!! Hope ksp2 fixes some render issues!!

    Heres an analogy for the oberth effect if you ever need say if were to use the same bouncyball load it into a bouncyball cannon and shoot it lower to the ground its gonna go higher than if you shot it up (if you ever use this analogy you can keep the idea as if it were your own) 👍

    re: KSP - I'd love to see you build an SSTO with landing thrusters that it lands on it's wheels rather on it's arse. Given the ludicrousness of this craft surely this is a minor addition?
    re: Internet problem - Root cause: The virgin hub is a steaming pile. Tech detail: Sounds like it's not issuing IP addresses using DHCP over the wired interfaces. Solutions: 1. Use a static IP. 2.Get a better router. 3. Turn DHCP off on the Virgin hub and use another device to serve it, like a raspberry pi. 4: Set up a split scope. I.e have two DHCP servers one on the router and one on a Pi each serving a different range of addresses within the same network. Then if one stops the other takes over.
    I'm a network engineer. I design and build networks for a living, I couldn't help myself. Which is just as well, because I'm terrible at KSP and can offer no value there.
    Many Kerbals died to get this information.
