    She made Something's Got To Give to finish her contract with 20th Century Fox not Let's Make Love. She would have been in The Great Race, but was replaced by Natalie Wood. Who is Sidney Lumay? Did you mean Sidney LumeT? Mike Nichols Directed The Graduate.

      I've pinned this so everyone can see your corrections. Thank you for watching both of my videos on Marilyn. Like my mistake with "In Ol' Chicago", I probably should pay more attention to the details. I was studying "12 Angry Men" with my students at the time, so confused Mike Nichols with Sidney Lumet.

    Love the scenes from The Misfits. I think that film is underrated. Her time in the Actor’s Studio is very apparent in this performance! She really gained a depth and breadth from her training as evidenced by the role of Ros. PS: I enjoyed realizing that Thelma Ritter was her costar in two films- my favorite of all time, All About Eve, and The Misfits! Fun trivia

    “The Misfits” was such a bittersweet film. Marilyn was fantastic in it, but Arthur Miller wrote it as a slightly cruel comment on her persona. The scene you used showed her absolute radiance on the screen, & the chemistry between all her fellow actors. She truly was a star. ❤

    • @HamishDownie
      @HamishDownie  2 года назад +4

      On the video essay by "Be Kind Rewind" she apparently told him that she wanted him to write a script for her, not about her. Which is strikingly similar to what the son of the writer of Winnie the Pooh also said. Whether here or in "All About Eve", no matter who she was teamed up with, she outshone all of them. If she had made that film with Marlon Brando, it would have been fireworks. I can't imagine him dealing with being outshone well, though.

    • @danicafilipic3121
      @danicafilipic3121 2 года назад +4

      Arthur Miller was jealous of her fame,beauty ,talent and popularity. Also, her strength. She had such a difficult childhood which she showed the world, she became famous. Arthur was a spoilt Jewish mummy's boy.

    • @Camille_Anderson
      @Camille_Anderson 2 года назад +3

      @@danicafilipic3121 well said! i found Arthur to be condescending in his opinion of Marilyn & he was angry at himself deep down for making him begrudgingly realise he actually wanted her fame, adoration, beauty & innocence. This made him question his intellectual image & made him write a scathing character for her in the misfits. I am sure he wanted Marilyn to read what he wrote about her regarding the misfits character in order to knock her confidence which as we know, did upset Marilyn. Either way, this magnificent, luminous & wonderful artist deserved so much better. The new movie was not favourable & i dont gove it much credence, despite Ana's beauty & acting talent. This two parter has been so refreshing & has got me thinking about how much we lost our on MMs untimely death. What a legend!

    In fact, Marilyn was in ( July 1962,) stronger than ever, she told photographer and friend George Barris in a interview for. a book project that they working on, that she finally was happy and was exited about her future. She was rehired by Fox on August 1st 1962 for a $1 M contract for 2 years. In August of 1962 she fired her maid and her pr agent Pat Newcomb , also her analist Ralph Greenson. She had lot’s of film and on stage offers , also Vegas ask her to preform on stage with her favorite songs. She was about to adopt a 2 year old Mexican boy in September of 1962 in Mexico City ( she visit an orphan home there in February 1962 ) In October filming of Something’s Got To Give was planned…. A lot of people feel Some Like It Hot as one of Marilyn's best movies, and yet it's one of my least favourite movies. One of my favourites is Bus Stop, River of No Return, of course Gentleman Refer Blondes, Seven Year Inch, I also think she was very good in Ladies of the Chorus, Asphalt Jungle, There's No Business Like Show Business, Niagara.

      I need to watch "Asphalt Jungle"! I loved Marilyn in all those movies. "Some like it hot" is one of my all time favourites, but that doesn't mean that everyone has to have the same opinions. I just watched Marilyn in "Love Happy" and her part was fantastic. I need to rewatch "Seven year Itch". I didn't like it as a kid, but now I'm that grumpy middle aged man, I may have a different perspective. I used to want to save some of Marilyn's films for later, so I would always have a new film of hers to watch. But since last year, I've decided to throw that away and watch all her films. So many are accessible on RUclips now.

    I really believe the mid 1960's going forward would not have easy for her. Tastes were changing. Bardot and Ann-Margret were coming up fast. The studio contract system that coddled her was fading away. Doris Day was still a draw for several years, but she had a sketchy manager/husband steering her career. Marilyn would have needed to dump the Strasberg's and their ridiculous "Method" acting and mirror the technique of someone like Uta Hagen. Then there's the pills and alcohol...

    • @HamishDownie
      @HamishDownie  2 года назад +5

      I agree that she needed to have good people around her. I talked about that more in part one. She would have had to deal with turning 40, which is tough for almost all actresses who aren’t named Katherine Hepburn or Meryl Streep. I took a very purposely Pollyanna perspective in my videos, but undoubtedly the press and comedy world would have been as vicious to MM as they were to Elizabeth Taylor. I do feel that like Taylor, Marilyn was taking steps to pivot into the new era, and I do think she could have at the very least, like Doris Day had a chance at more success had she lived

    • @HamishDownie

    If Marilyn was manufactured it was by her. She did control her own image, at least after 1955. Marilyn was much prettier than Harlow in my opinion.

      You know, I never would have guessed that my remark about Harlow would cause people so much grief. I was trying to contextualise Marilyn in film history, not put her down in any way shape or form. Thank you for watching and commenting, it means a lot to a small channel like mine.

      No male producers and viewers manufactured her especially Arthur miller her controlling sexist husband do more research this deep rooted sexism needs to end! Is that all you care about is Marilyn Monroe’s beauty? What about her abilities as an actress and singer? Or her intelligence?

      Diana Dors, Elizabeth Taylor and Eartha Kitt all enjoyed careers that spanned their lifetimes and beyond their 40s. Don't you think Marilyn could have as well? Whether she would remain a leading lady is up for debate, but I don't think that her career would have been behind her
