I understand how you feel. Remember Darcy had a good father and he grew up with good principals but carried them out with pride, and of course Mr Wickham. But, my focus is more on the journey of Fanny rather than the parents. I don’t think I made this clear enough in the video, but what I meant was that MP would provide a skeleton story that would need to be fleshed out with the characters from P&P. I actually do think that MP started out as a sequel, but Austen may have felt it to be too constricting, so pivoted to original characters. Anyway, thank you so much for watching and commenting! I've only seen her in a few films, but I have to say that I have enjoyed her each time. But, film is very subjective and there's nothing wrong with having a different opinion. For example, I have a strong dislike of Timothy Chalamet for no objective reason.

I think there’s two schools of thought between Bette and Gloria being robbed. My guess with the first Oscar’s is that Gloria’s performance as Sadie Thompson was seen as not as good as Jeanne Eagels Star-making Broadway performance as Sadie in Rain. I really need to watch those Sadie films. That story was remade so often, and even Marilyn Monroe wanted to retell the story in the 60s. I have the DVD of “Sunrise”, so maybe I could watch the first Oscars Best Actress race next.

That is very true. Similar to what Tim Curry did in “Rocky Horror Picture Show”. It was a year of iconic performances making for a very difficult category. I really think “Eve” should have been awarded a special Oscar for best ensemble

@@HamishDownie 'All About Eve' would definitely have won the 'Best Emsemble' Award if the SAG Awards had existed then.

They are adding a technical award for Best casting, so that’s kind of the same as best ensemble

I imagine that the cast around Dean would have been different. It’s interesting how certain actors are seen at the time (such as River Phoenix and Christian Slater been seen as the same type), when they seem so different to us today.

@@HamishDownie Yes I listened to her album and was again blown away by her voice. She is the most attractive great actress that I’ve ever seen and the best of the sexy singers of that music it amazes me. why such a massive talent hasn’t been celebrated like all of the greats

I became interested in her because of Anna’s book, so I’m part of the problem. I’m still planning on getting her box set and go through her films. The issue in Japan is her only film available is the Joan Crawford film, Berserk!

You are entitled to your opinion, but, you know what? I didn't know him until recently despite watching many of his films. I'm pretty sure that outside of a film school, few people would be able to name him as director of Casablanca

Perhaps I should have used more of a contemporary to Curtiz like John Ford, who was also working within the studio system. I think it's pretty easy to imagine a John Ford film. But, because of Curtiz's ability to direct just about any and every genre, it's pretty hard to imagine what a Michael Curtiz film would be like. Even someone like Howard Hawks who was also very diverse, you could argue that all his films had his DNA. This is nothing against him as a director, but my argument is that because of his difficulty to pigeonhole, he is hard to market to the public, therefore, the public are less likely to associate his name with his films, unlike a John Ford or a Howard Hawks.

I bet if you did a poll of 100 random people, most could identify Hitchcock as the director of Psycho. But, I doubt more than one or two would know that Michael Curtiz directed "Casablanca" or any number of the classic films he directed.

I’m kind of on the same track, except that I called Curtiz a journeyman vs. the “Auteur” who would often remake the same film over and over such as Hitchcock. This made them easier to market.

Hack is such a derogatory term, but I think you kind of have to be a hack in order to get your 10,000 hours to become a master craftsman.

Thank you for your reply! Gloria Swanson and Bette Davis (and Judy Holliday) all had iconic roles (in their careers and for film as a whole). Whereas Ann Baxter’s most iconic role was arguably in “The Ten Commandments”, and Elenor Parker’s was in “The Sound of Music”. I still think “All About Eve” should have gotten an Oscar for Best Ensemble. So, by that logic, we can agree with Joan Crawford in “Feud” and say that Swanson was robbed. Thanks again!

I could see myself making a video on “Inland Empire” as I feel that Laura Dern did possibly the greatest performance of the 21st century in that movie. Thanks Jayson, I do like to take a Pollyanna view of what might have happened. I'm really glad you've been enjoying them. I've been taking your advice to be more off-the-cuff. The drawing videos seem to do well with audience retention, so I'm going to keep going with them. I feel like I get some insight while I'm drawing. Plus, I can use all that art school training. I'm planning on doing ones on Jean Harlow, Dorothy Dandridge (and her sister Vivian), Health Ledger, and maybe Judy Holliday. I know some subscribers are interested in Barbara Stanwyck, Cary Grant and Shirley MacLaine thanks to some polls I did. I'm still figuring out what I can do that's unique to celebrate the stars who have had full careers. Thanks again for taking time out to watch my videos. It's always an honor.

Yes, I think The Little Foxes was her greatest performance in a film. interestingly, my poll in the community tab is neck and neck - 50% for Bette and 50% for Gloria. I recently rewatched both films as I was planning a discussion with a film journalist (who had to cancel). I think Gloria Swanson’s performance is more nuanced than I had given it credit for, so you a probably right that Gloria should have won for Sunset.

Agreed they just got the years wrong, Joan Fontaine should have won for Rebecca instead, Gloria definitely for sunset blvd still one of the greatest films ever made, and Swanson should have won the inaugural Oscar over Janet gaynor

This is the second person who's mentioned the inaugural Oscars with Swanson losing to Gaynor. I've almost finished watching "Sadie Thompson" and I have a copy of "Sunrise", so I may be on my way to making another video.
