Looks like the “gap” is the cause of the break. Weld looks to provide support.
cool hopfulley works old farmers trick i use heat item up in oven to like 400 500 hundred weld with nickle rod soon as done with weld put back in over thats still ON and let it cool very very slow thats the key

Your correct to pre heat it but if you ever do it again cover it with dry sand so it cools slowly 👍
