I have lived in Pyeongtaek, S Korea for over a year and yes, I agree it’s hard to make friends. The locals are friendly and I have met many Koreans that speak fluent English, but they’re not going to invite me over for dinner. Or introduce me to their friends and family. Everything is very surface level.

I lived in South Korea for about five years, i even give birth to my beautiful baby girl there and yes! Being black is really exhausting, which is very sad because people just judge us by our skin 😴 😭😭
Don't get me wrong, Koreans are very friendly people mostly for the ones i was very close with but sometimes ignorance get the best of people, so i stay indoors all through 😭😭
I got frustrated at some point because of the guilt i felt for my daughter not being able to go out and play, i was just too afraid that someone will stop their child from playing with her, i was afraid to walk outside in a safe country like South Korea because i didn't want anyone questioning me by my look:)
Now i know we can't ever change people mind-set about our colors because those people's also get judge some how..
I guess that's how life works, you just have to keep going, keep being happy, humble and know that not everyone will love you no matter what!
Over all, Koreans are nice people and the country is beautiful too🥰

Honestly, it’s so important to know your worth, be confident in who you are…and to not conform to what the world wants you to be or what the world wants you to see your self as. Your are not less because someone sees you as that, that’s their perception… not reality. Keep your head up!
it's fine if you're in a dominantly black society -- just like how koreans/chinese are fine being in korea & china, but they also face discrimination when they go to places where they are the minorities

@@isabellewarren535 Asian people are in multiple African countries disrespecting the natives there, and putting up businesses where they refuse to serve or allow the black natives into their businesses. When Asian people go to other countries, particularly white countries they are mainly discriminated against by white people. The tension between Asian people and Black people comes from Asian people putting up businesses in black communities, because white people will NOT allow them in their communities, and while the Asian people are doing business in Black communities they treat the black people like trash. Yet they are making a living off of the black community, and people they despise.

I want to work in Japan for a while but I just know I’m going to get homesick as soon as I get there. I’m from Jamaica and I love the fact that I can say I have never had to worry about the social experiences that I have being race related and to go from that to being a total minority, alien even, is absolutely scary. Even when I travel to the US I’m instantly on guard because of my skin despite America being such a diverse country. I’m trying my best to not talk myself out of the experience though.
It’s certainly an adjustment but you also grow and challenge yourself in so many amazing ways!!
I’m also from Jamaica planning to go to Japan and I share the same exact sentiments. But I think it will be worth the experience so take the plunge. I sure will😊
As a fellow Jamaican myself, I say go for it, I would too like to go to Japan one day. The experience will truly be something for you to grow from and learn about their different culture as well.

The picture taking (without permission) and touching people- i would just feel so dehumanized? At least I believe I would feel that way. Especially from what I've heard from some RUclipsrs that live(d) in China about what goes on after those pictures are taken.
Some people don't even ask for permission like you said.
And sadly it seems some people let them do that and (even though they should think every person will have different boundaries) apply it to every black woman, or person.
It's crazy.
Definitely seems like a nice place, but I would not feel great visiting by myself especially since I'm more introverted.
And something to mention, there is definitely a sense of superiority that some Koreans (probably many) seem to have towards 'lesser-developed' countries, I had been watching a couple of this girl and a guy, and she was from a smaller country in Europe (not any of the big well-known ones) and he was korean. And it was mentioned that the guy's mother looked down on her because of her country, she thought the girl liked her son for his money or something like that.... I was so shocked.

it's happened to me -- but i do see they come from ignorance and curiosity rather than a mocking way. Can't really blame them cuz of their censored media and education, but hopefully as China opens up a bit more to the world the people get more exposure to multiculturalism.
Its so interesting to hear your stories! I am even moreso grateful of the deeper level of friendships that I was able to build in China with the locals.

Omg Princess thank you so much for bringing up the thing about the portrayal of Africa. I’ve only been here for 6 months but I’ve seen so many ads and even in the English textbooks for my middle schoolers, the only representation of Africa is poverty. And it reminds me of growing up in America and constantly seeing charity organizations have hours upon hours of images of poor African children. And it’s so infuriating to see this same propaganda as an adult in Korea. But I’m making it a point to educate my students. We’re still on break but when we go back to school I plan on having lessons on African geography and culture and giving them a glimpse into the diversity that exists on the continent. Sorry for the mini rant but thank you so much for bringing it up. I love your videos and thank you for this comparison it was really interesting to watch 💞

It is absolutely ridiculous how ignorant so many ppl are regarding Africa...especially here in the US. I've traveled all over the world and have been to at least one country on every continent besides Antarctica, and have been to most european countries, all North American countries and several African countries, and so people will frequently ask me where my favorite place in the world is. I answer honestly which is that my favorite specific city on earth is Cape Town, SA, my favorite overall country for vacation is Italy bcz i'm a big geek for old cathedrals and bell towers and fountains and stuff like that, and I get a lot of positive or IMO normal reactions to all of that, but on more occasions than I can count on both hands, i've had the person react positively about the Italy bit, but negatively about Cape Town. The ignorance ranges from "why would your favorite place be somewhere that has mud huts and dangerous animals all over the place?" to someone just being like "ya your favorite place would be somewhere in Africa," which i'm still not really sure what it's supposed to mean probably some attempted jab at the fact that my super American wife just happens to be black which ofc just shows the extra layers of bigotry in the comment.
Some ppl really just don't know any better though and after explaining to them that there are PLENTY of African countries that have booming metropolitan cities that could stand up (and in a few instances probably best) any famous American or European cities, and showing them pics from traveling, they'll be super interested and apologize, but like half of the ignorant people are just terrible human beings who want to continue to be ignorant because they're racist, sexist, homophobic douche canoes. South Africa (well mostly just Cape Town, I had some negative experiences in other places in SA), Zambia, Kenya, Mozambique, and Tanzania will always have a special place in my heart, and there are so many other countries that I want to visit worldwide, but I definitely wanna go back to Africa in the next few years. I have friends who live in Nigeria so I definitely want to go there, I want to go to Namibia, I want to go back to SA, but I was wondering if either of you had suggestions on countries that I should visit during my travels?? I'm going back to college for another degree this time in History & Anthropology so I love going to new places and trying to genuinely listen & learn about all of the culture & history from the ppl who live there and by going to as many culturally significant places as possible.

The ignorance is real here even amongst the medical community like I ended up getting a certain strain of Epstein Barr virus while traveling in Africa, but I didn't find that out for like 5 months bcz they sent me straight to an infectious disease doctor when I got home, who wanted to test me for malaria first despite the symptoms being different but fine fair enough, until they then wanted the next test to be an AIDS/HIV test which I thought was the most offensive shit in the world like why should the protocol be any different than when I get sick on US soil? Test for all of the commonplace stuff FIRST and not a bunch of much less likely and one impossible thing just bcz of the doctors preconceived notions. Phew this comment is long as hell now so imma just hush, but I hope both of you have a great day and a wonderful year!
This was an interesting comparison. I’ve often heard that communication is easier in China but interesting to hear how different it is in Korea. After watching your videos I certainly want to visit Busan at some point

I went to Beijing in 2012 and it was so amazing! Everyone was so nice and welcoming. They definitely stared more at us when we went to tourist places like the Summer Palace and stuff. But definitely going back and always wanted to go to Shanghai and Hong Kong.

You will definitely not feel like a minority in some African countries. There are many places that are world class in Africa but the continent keeps getting over looked by black travelers.

@Chen Yung I was going to say the same thing, I've traveled to Africa 4 times already and whenever I'm on the plane you never see other black people. It's always whites people. I don't know why so brother and sisters here in the states have a stigma about visiting the motherland.
If it isn't too much trouble, could you please list some African countries you've enjoyed personally/ African countries to visit in general? I'm an American of Haitian descent and I only have surface-level knowledge of African countries.

I live in Korea now and lived in China for 4 years. Although they share a lot of history and ancient philosophy, everything else is so different. Mannerism, modern believes, ways of thinking, ect… I found China much more difficult to “blend in” and be part of society (actually impossible as a foreigner) whereas Koreas much more chill. China had some amazing things about it for sure, but Koreas smoother to live in (in my personal experience, others have their own experience so I’m not saying that’s what it’s like for everyone)

I knew abou all the picture taking of black foreigners in China, but I had no idea that the starting in Beijing would be so bad - I would feel really uncomfortable, but so long as the stares aren't mean or hostile or malicious, I guess I would learn to deal with,

I'll tell you my experience in Atlanta, GA (where the majority of its residents are black). I'm Iranian and I cannot tell you the amount of ignorant questions I've been asked by black people. This is absolutely not a racist thing, lol, it's similar to your experience: it's due to lack of knowledge and ignorance and lack of exposure to different cultures (even though the US is suuuper diverse). You are a minority in S Korea and China (a very homogeneous country) and it's very natural to have strange experiences and encounters there every now and then; but I'm astonished how so many Americans (born and raised in multicultural cities) make such ignorant comments, lol.
The world of information is a click away from us and so many people are still so closed-minded and ignorant 😂

Your friend was the one with confidence. She had the confidence, dignity, and self-worth not to spend her time, and money in a business where she had to beg people who are clearly beneath her, to get in. And yes they are beneath her due to their disgusting, discriminatory behavior, she had the good sense not to take part in.
She certainly is confident. All of my friend carry themselves with dignity and self worth.
I’m glad regardless of the negative experiences you made the most of it and treasured the best parts. I hate that western colonization and classist systems had created such colorism and racism in Asia. It’s just a lot of ignorance and the younger generations are being more and more educated and better about it. It’s hard not to apply western concepts of racism to the East… but until we are all educated on all of our history, it’ll be hard to meet the desire to educate or be educated if we don’t have the compassion for understanding one another. Also that man grabbed your bum and you just grabbed his face with your fist… sounds fair to me!

You’re welcome. There are lots of horror stories online about teaching in Korea - mostly people who teach in Hagwons (private academies). I taught in a government school and had a really great experience. Good luck deciding!

Language barrier will always be the crux of the issue whether a relationship stays generic or becomes intimate. Whenever I think of african and asian tensions I think of the Tong Wars in nyc's Chinatown where there was a lot of racial disparity between immigrants and the locals, not unlike the disparity the Afrocentric community faced in other parts of America. They were obligated to choose the only path that was allowed to them but made history nonetheless with what they were given, and in that regard, we have more in common than can shake a stick at lol edit: never allow someone to make you feel bad for exploring the holes in our social construct. Life's a big damn competition, don't let any lib tell you any different.

Great video. I'm black. My mother and I wanted to visit Seoul in August 2023 for a week as we love K-Dramas. Is there any reason to be afraid? Is it safer to stay in a neighborhood with foreigners like Itaewon?

You have nothing to be afraid of. You'll be perfectly safe. No worries. I'm sure you will enjoy your time here wherever you choose to stay. If you're traveling with your mother, then maybe avoid Itaewon, as it can get noisy because of the nightlife (however, if she enjoys people watching, sipping a cocktail or 2 and dance music, then Itaewon is definitely an option). I suggest the Kangnam area, Myeongdong or even the Hongdae area. But tbh, wherever you stay, the transportation system is so convenient that you can get around with ease. I hope you enjoy your time here with your mother^^
I’m Polynesian,my sister and I went with our Mum a few years ago. It was just a layover in Seoul passing thru but we realised that travelling with my 65 year old Mum in a Asian country has its own benefits. Having your Mum there will open doors and bring the softer side out in most people. That’s what we found so many people were helpful towards us. Also Seoul Incheon airport is huge. If your Mum is fit all good, but wheelchair assistance is there. It gets you thru express gates, board first and get to zip around in their airport cart in Incheon (that was fun lol). Korean Air treated my Mum like the Queen she is. My Mum is a laugh and will talk with anyone (complete opposite of me). Yay for the extroverted, unfiltered unbothered Queens we have for Mums! If your Mum is anything like that, bonus!
Plus, if you live in Busan, you won't have to take a train there in case there's a zombie outbreak.

I was in China on vacation in 2016, and everywhere I went, I was photographed. My friend and I were the only persons of color in our tour group, and he was a very light skinned African American. When we exited the bus, I was immediately swamped, surrounded with people wanting to take my picture. This happened more in mainland China than Hong Kong. Jokingly, I told my tour group that Chinese photographers thought I was Beyonce. (Smile)
I remember a comment that said some chinese people think us black people are like rare pokemon 😂
Racism in Asia is different, some people will be nice and friendly, ask to take pictures, or be friends with you. However, the same people wouldn't agree to their daughter or son dating or marrying a black person.
@@joseph3036 Not just black person, but also white person and any forigners, international couples is hard and China's families members are more "close to each other" than other countries that means China's parents won't let their children to live far from them. If possible they don't even want their children to marry someone that cames from another city. So I guess even if some foreingers had ever lived in China, they still don't understand Chinese people and thought it is beacuse of the raicism.
@@marcusdong131 Mostly they have no problems if it's a white foreigner since white skin is considered attractive in China and white nations are economically successful. Chinese culture is extremely hierarchical. I know a black friend that was told by his Chinese girlfriend's family that they'd only accept a white foreigner. I've heard similar stories from S.Korea.
@@joseph3036 You still don't understand Chinese. In China, people prefer white skin cuz they thought white means clean and beautiful, China had this kind of value long before the Chinese saw any white foreigners. Chinese can accept some white guys for their skin is like us(sometimes, some Chinese skins are even more white than the white people). So this is not, like, racist or some white guys preference. It is the same in Korea and other east Aisa countries. As to the blacks, you know why some Chinese have bia on them? 20 years ago when China first open its market to the world, we love foreingers no matter you are white or blacks. Cuz things change, when a lot of news came out that black people played Chinese girls. They cheat their Chinese girlfreinds about their AIDS. And when Xi decided to cooperate with Africa. A lot of African students came to China, some of them don't even speak any Chinese but their treatment are much more better than Chinese(you can google it). So, there truly are some racism amd bias in China, but I can surely tell you if you do good to China and love Chinese people and culture, almost all Chinese people would love you. We are crazy about some black NBA players, like Kobe, and singers, and. Me personally like a famous African guy in my hometown who marry a Chinese girl. He can speak good Chinese in our accent and he is funny, his name is YI BO. It is the same to the white guys.

When you grow up outside of Africa just as anywhere you adopt the culture of where you grow up. Being Nigerian by heritage does not close that gap when you are born and raised outside of the country.
Omg my Ghanaian American friend was in China for 3 years and she would always show us snapchats of Chinese locals taking pictures of her or staring at her hard lol.

I am Korean and I am living in USA for 30 years but I am a foreigner always. Because of my face, from black and white. Could not make good friends, but I have can't be like Korean, always a superficial friend. Any country and all over the world, especial you are different than their country. If I compare Korean and American, it is better than Korean. I am RN and living for a long time, I do not have a good friend. They disappear for no reason in America.

Yeah. It depends on the country. We're not a monolith.But just learn how things are done in the country that you are going to, learn the language if it's not one that you speak and if it's necessary so that you get by there, be adaptable to new things and be respectful of the cultures, customs and rules and then people won't have a problem with you. Just don't be like the stereotypical foreigners that complain about everything, expect to be worshipped and are disrespectful and intrusive.
Also be street smart. Don't walk around around carrying expensive things in public and if you are going outside of the typical tourist areas, go with someone that knows the area. Research helps as well as the general common sense
From my knowledge, tourists are treated well and welcomed in African countries, especially if you do the above.

By nature, culture requires conservatism in order to continue to exist. Therefore, places like Korea and China aren't going to be truly open to multiculturalism like that if they want to continue their culture.

It really depends actually. I've traveled to both China and Korea and never had any problems but I'm experiencing it as a African American male. It might be different for a woman.
