Your experiences chiefly mirror mine. The biggest shocks for me moving back to Nigeria 10 years ago was and still is how prevalent misogyny from men and women is. I have lived in Lagos and abuja and also Anambra and the misogyny is maddening. Constantly feeling harassed unheard or stepped over by people is very trying so I agree regarding it being impossible to remain “soft” in this environment. My only saving grace is that I predominantly work from home for an international company because it was the same about the workplace The idea of not being able to go to the market without incident really also touched a nerve because that was something I really enjoyed doing in London and elsewhere. But in Lagos specifically it is simply not feasible especially when you are living there verses visiting as it is not an experience you want to subject yourself to constantly The accent issue and becoming “tougher and mean” also rings so true. People crossing boundaries once they have your number (my WhatsApp number is still on my U.K. number a decade later because of this) There is just so much to be said about how antagonistic I find it all but I just wanted to say that all you’ve said is VALID. trying to live an average quiet peaceful existence is so hard to come by in my experience as well. Side note: congrats on UCL.
