    Umm.. big problem. The Jetta IS NOT on the S3 platform. The S3 is built on the brand new MQB architecture shared with the MK7 Golf family. The Jetta GLI is built on the 10-year-old MK5- MK6 PQ platform. The MQB architecture will be introduced in the upcoming MK7 Jetta.

    • @imranahmed1542

      And the MQB platformed vehicles have fantastic tunable engines, vw mk7 golf r are running 600bhp with stock internals with just bigger turbo, injector, hpfp, intercooler, catless downpipe, even the dsg holds up well after it's been mapped

    My friend had a VW Jetta, and LITERALLY the best stock audio system I've ever heard, it kinda made a feeling of euphoria. Also the car was pretty fast, and he put a new exhaust system on it, and it sounded amazing. I'd pick that car over the Audi considering the price.

    The Audi in the video is built on the MQB platform which is a generation ahead (and much superior) of the PQ35 platform of the Jetta GLI.

      Google it. The S3 is built on the newest MQB Volkswagen group platform for compact cars. The Jetta is old, The platform that it's built on is the PQ35 platform which originally debuted on the Audi A3 back in 2003!

      @@airspacelord1387 they are essentially fwd which engages awd when front starts losing grip but they never tend to oversteer plus newer versions have electric handbrakes, audi makes sweet daily cars with engines that can serve some punch and alot of tuning companies offer remap for their engines but i just don't find them that exciting as drivers cars i get that majority of people wants to feel safe but at least s and rs models should handle more agressively

      Half the price? You would compare a GTI to an A3 and a Golf R to a S3, neither of those are half the price. Comparing the starting prices, the A3 is only 6k more than the GTI, which for the AWD was an easy choice for me. The S3 is only $4k more than the Golf R

    Sorry, after having owned a 2014 2.0 R-Line Turbo Beetle and now an A3, there is a huge difference between VW and Audi. The Audi is much more comfortable, and even with the same engine, the performance is so much better. The reliability difference is huge too. I had that Beetle in the shop repeatedly for problems with the frameless windows, the keyless entry, you name it, that thing was at the dealership a lot. I knew I couldn't keep it past warrantee. I took the Bug back and my dealer suggested an A3.
    Very good suggestion. Years later, I have not had one thing to complain about. Brilliant, fast, reliable car. Was it a little more money-wise? Yeah. But not that much more. Here's what I have spent on my 2015 A3 besides warrantee and AudiCare: $140 for an alignment.
    That's it. I haven't even needed to use the factory warrantee for anything. That's the difference you should be talking about. That's what makes Audis worth the money.

    I love Audi (I've got the A6 which I'll take all day over the Passat), I live in the Midwest so of course the AWD is preferable. But both cars last forever, well made etc. I think if you have the money, spring for the Audi. The driving experience is over the top and they're beautiful cars.

    funny comparison for me. Back in 2012 i bought the GLI new autobahn. was modified lightly with a tune and ascetic mods. really loved it, unfortunate a year after i bought the car a elderly driver hit me driving the wrong way in traffic head on at 60mph. i tore 4 muscles in my hip and the labrum, had to have surgery but 3 of the muscle would not be able to be reattached, i lost 2 lateral rotator muscles and the tensor fasciae meaning balancing and lift myself up with my left leg would no longer be something i could ever really do again. for being in a 60 mph head on collision its amazing this is all that happened the GLI saved my life. Up till this I was extremely active, competed in mountain bike racing ever year, rock climbing and canyoneering all year, religiously worked out an hour a day at the gym. i coached trouble youth kids at a rehabilitation center and trained them for triathlons as my job and i was also in college going into exercise science. after the wreck i had to face a reality for myself. after surgery i was crutches zero weight on my left leg for 3 month then 3 month 50%. during this i had to leave my job, take a break from school and almost all my normal activities but i could still help my friends modify their cars and modify my new car. i was decent at it and everyone would come to me for help. it was 3 months down the road from this accident, i was helping my friend put in the mk6 golf R turbo, K04, in his mk6 gti when he asked me why im not going into the automotive field since it always was my biggest passion and i answered with it never really crossed my mind. My hip never going to be normal again I changed my degree to mechanical engineering and graduated with an Internship with APR, spent a year there then got a job with VAG and moved to Stuttgart for 6 months. the 8V S3 had launched while i was training training in Germany so i was involved in a lot of the roll out process. when i got home i had my very modified b8.5 2013 audi S4 i bought 9 month prior that i traded for a new 2016 S3 the same week i got home. Im now a race engineer for an audi sport team and development of the two audi RS3 LMS cars under my charge. my personal S3 is a 588hp at the wheels monster that i love and was even at SEMA this year.
    These two cars changed my life and i fell in love with the S3 because of the love for the GLI i had. absolutely loved seeing this video hats off Sam.
    side note Sam, watched the S3 rebuild too and well you have come a long way since then on your automotive knowledge and VAG car knowledge, really enjoy your stuff keep it up

Thank you for taking your time, sharing both the good and the bad (less good?) parts, the difficulty matching the bumper to the front end (people don't understand how much time & patience it can take), and, the bargain price that you get to enjoy this mildly wild ride at. @ 25k intro, and, @ $36 or so in your driveway- I'm so jealous I could scream. You hit the nail on the head with the feel of your Jetta GLI vs the Mark V GTI/GLI: the old ones felt fun and full of spirit. With the Mark VI, the Jetta GLI deviated from the Golf platform. It was cheapened out and most of the good stuff VW became known for was removed.
    The Mark VI Jetta GLI I test drove (2012) honestly feels like a solid, fast, Toyota Corolla. The Mark V Jetta (same platform as Golf all the way to 2010 in the U.S.) HAD that fun feel because it was just a betrunked Golf.

      You are correct sir, I’m personally not bothered about what brand the car is but the VW Jetta, Audi A3, Seat Toledo and Škoda Rapid are all made by the VW Audi Group and all use the same engine ranges. I bought a Rapid as i knew its a very similar car. Obviously in an Audi you get a better trim than a Škoda but the engines are the same and a lot of the parts.

    • @joelbielecki3501

      John Williams actually the rapid is not related to the jetta at all because it is based on the polo platform. it especially doesn't share anything with the audi a3 which is based on MQB😬 the rapid is a cost effective car designed for developing markets. not saying it's a bad car but it's just not related at all. the octavia and seat leon are the cars that shares engines and many components with the a3.

Try to stop near night club with Jetta and with S3... :D Money You spend is not only about technical specifications. P.S. The Jetta and the S3 in this video is not the same platform. I have a 2016 S3, I've also had a few weeks in an A3, and also a GLI. While you bring up an interesting comparison, you can't directly compare the S3 to the GLI. Also the difference between the A3 and the S3 is vast enough that it's almost a different model of car. You could argue that the base front wheel drive A3 is an upmarket GLI and i"d probably agree with you. But what you're leaving out is that with the Audi badge does come some extra features with the build quality, whether that be interior materials, extra sound deadening or just overall attention to detail. Yes the GLI is a tremendous value proposition for what it is, it's a fantastic commuter car. 80% of buyers would be satisfied with it, and wouldn't spend another $25k on an S3 (but possibly another $10 on an A3 because of tech and interior materials). But if you want a car that can make an STi nervous, while still pulling up to the valet and turning heads, then you'll understand where your extra $25k went. Anyone who is shopping a GLI is not cross shopping a fully loaded S3.

  • @garymathe9863
    @garymathe9863 6 лет назад

    Well, for one, the S3 has AWD and a big turbo, and no it doesn't cost twice as much because you can't get a GLI for $25k unless you travel back to ten years ago. That said, I've had a GTI and a TTS which are the hatch/coupe equivalents of the cars you're testing, and I loved both. A high performance VW is always great value, while Audi is more prestigious and usually nicer looking. It's about preference.

    Good comparison video. A lot of people in the States don't know that VW owns Audi (and quite a few other companies too, like Porsche and Bentley). So the Jetta and S3 are comparable, to an extent.
    In Europe you have the Audi RS3 but that has a bigger engine. However, first thing that occurs to me about the S3 over the Jetta are adaptive dampers and air suspension (or magnetic suspension. Whatever) which already puts the Audi in a different league confort-wise. Then you have Audi's AWD Quattro system which improves handling and is especially important for bad weather conditions (depends where you live) or improving handling on track, if you like going to the race track.
    The S3 might not be faster than the Jetta in a straight line but that in no way means they're the same car. You can get things with the Audi that you can't get with the Jetta, of course for a price.

I drove around quite a bit in both and while the audi interior was a little nicer, the cars were identical and as you say here, for half the price. Both liked to show off my ripping through the gears (5 spd), cornering like teenagers etc and to me, there was absolutely NO difference between them.

    Performance wise the S3 is closer to the handling/power of a Golf R due to the Haldex all wheel drive system and TFSI engine.
    The only car you could compare the Jetta GLI is a Skoda Octavia VRS. That'll be a fair comparison 👍
    Comparing a GLI to an S3 is like comparing a Ducati superbike to a reliant robin (Google it) 🙌

    I think that VAG port their previous audi platforms to VW SKODA and SEAT. I used to have a A4 and the engine and gearbox was shared with the Passat. I used to have a Skoda and share the engine with the Jetta and the gearbox with the A3. So if you buy a VW with audi engine and gearbox it must be fun to driver as an audi

    Wtf are you talking about. In Canada a Jetta Gli with DSG is 37,000. A loaded S3 is 52,000. The engine in the Jetta is a gutless while the S3 is incredible. Tuning, chassis, transmission, engine, virtual cockpit, bang and O stereo. Yes, the S3 is worth 15k more.

    • @sapientbudgie5652
      @sapientbudgie5652 7 лет назад +2

      Yes, I'm well aware of the dollar difference. A Jetta GLI in the united states is 28995 with a DSG and you get get a Premium Plus S3 for 45K well equipped. Also, the engine in the GLI is not the engine in the GTI. Try to compare a bmw 320i to a bmw 340xdrive. There is a 25k difference. Video is fucking useless here. Of course the S3 is worth 15k more...but it's not 25k difference in any country

    • @SG-wj2qj
      @SG-wj2qj 7 лет назад +1

      Sapient Budgie Correct . but if you check with let's say... 2018 now. A GLI is fair to compare against the A3 2.0T with S-tronic. A loaded 2018 GLI is 36k... While a A3 2.0T with equal equipment is 41K. Is 5K worth the AWD, Nicer interior, arguable nicer exterior, more refined fit and finish and the Audi ownership experience at dealerships. YES! however... A loaded Golf R is 42k...and a S3 with similar equipment is 56k. Is that worth the extra 13k, I'd say no. Especially with the Golf R's insanely good resale value in Canada for being so exclusive.

    • @sapientbudgie5652

    • @SG-wj2qj
      @SG-wj2qj 7 лет назад

      Sapient Budgie to each they're own, the RS3 is wicked. But with a Canadian starting price of 63k. It's hard to compromise some of that sport in exchange for... Let's say an S5 for $2000 less. But that depends on the persons needs when buying.

The new GTI is a seriously good car but there is a lot of competition (here in Europe at least). It makes me sad when I'm in the US and don't see any of the hot hatches we have. But then it makes me sad when I come home and go from a V8 to a diesel 4 banger.

  • @farrell19075
    @farrell19075 7 лет назад

    That Jetta GLI DSG was over $30k sticker new, not $25k. What really sucks about the Jetta is that it doesn't have real leather on the seats, only fake leather throughout (other than the steering wheel and shift knob). The GTI of same generation had leather down middle of seats and vinyl side panels but the Jetta didn't get that. I complained to a VW rep at an auto show about the lack of real leather and he went on about how "it's the finest simulated leather in the industry". Who cares, it's fake and feels like rubber. The leather in my GTI doesn't compare to an Audi A6 2.7T I once owned, but it's a hell of a lot better than fake leather and is still in perfect condition after 6 years of use. Obviously an S3 doesn't compare to the Jetta due to being essentially a Golf R sedan. Much better platform, AWD, higher output, more features, better materials, etc. I certainly wouldn't pay $50k for it though, especially when a pretty loaded Golf R goes for $10K less with same platform and drivetrain.

    I was leasing a 2015 A3 Quattro because work's perks were covering most of the cost. When that perk ended and time to return the A3 I crossed shop a bunch of car to buy this time. I came out with the 2015 GLI with face lifted rear and updated interior and push button start. I literally felt like I was in the same car. Not only was the engine and transmission the same most of the button and switches are even identical and reused across two cars. I prefer the GLI to be honest not only because of the value proposition but also objectively it's a more sporty and more fun one to drive of the two.

    Audi A3, VW Jetta and Škoda Octavia are mechanicaly same car. One is made on Inglostadt (or Györ, I know that most Lambo engines are from Györ), one in Wolfsburg and one in Mlada Boleslav.
    If you have problem with Audi you can put Škoda parts. These are same parts, from same factory but different tag and therefore different price.
    For family man, Octavia is by far best. It is the biggest, the cheapest and much simpler to use.

    They are not the same platform, the A3 is actually the golf MK7’s cousin, both the A3 and MK7 Golf are much better cars than the MK6 Jetta.
    So you should be comparing the top of the line Golf which is the R and the top of the line A3 which is the RS3, there would be no competition here, the RS3 just kills the R, not saying that the R is a bad car, it’s actually a great car, but the RS3 is a beast of a car.
    The new MK7 Jetta (2019) is a different story since it will use the same platform that underprints the A3 and Golf which is Volkswagen group’s MQB platform.
