    HOW TO PASS THE POLICE OFFICER SELECTION PROCESS
    TIP 1 - Learn the core competencies
    The police core competencies have changed so you need to make sure you learn them and understand them. Make sure you demonstrate the core competencies at every stage of the process. For example, when responding to the application form competency based questions, use keywords and phrases from the keywords in your application responses.
    - Emotionally Aware;
    - Take ownership;
    - Work collaboratively;
    - Deliver, Support and Inspire;
    - Analyse Critically;
    - Innovative and Open Minded.
    TIP 2 - Use keywords from the CORE COMPETENCIES in everything you do! Examples:
    EMOTIONALLY AWARE
    • You acknowledge and respect other's opinion.
    • You ask for help if you are unsure.
    • Seek assistance when needed.
    TAKING OWNERSHIP
    - You accurately identify the issue (ask questions to clarify). “I just want to ask you a few questions so I can accurately identify the issue here.”
    - Taking responsibility for their own decisions. “I will take responsibility for sorting out this issue!”
    TIP 3 - IMPARTIALITY!
    Demonstrate an ability to act with impartiality during the assessment centre (role plays and interview in particular!)
    - Understand the needs of individuals, and take these into account when making decisions.
    - Treat every person in a fair and respectful manner.
    - Ensure you communicate clearly.
    - Challenge prejudice and discrimination, whenever it arises.
    - Make decisions using fair and objective reasoning.
    - Value and appreciate the opinions of everyone, provided they are not in contradiction with the police code of ethics.
    TIP 4 - Provide evidence-based responses to interview questions using STAR technique during your responses.
    This means using a structured format when answering the competency-based interview questions that form part of the police selection process. The STAR technique is a tried and tested method for responding to situational/behavioural questions and forms the following 4 elements:
    SITUATION - What was the situation?
    TASK - What had to be done?
    ACTION - What action did you take?
    RESULT - What happened following your actions?
    TIP 5 - Mock interviews
    Carry out at least 2 mock interviews and practice STAR technique, interview technique and responding to the questions I will give you in the next tip.
    TIP 6 - Be prepared for the following interview questions
    Interview question 1. Describe a time when you have supported a vulnerable person or group of people.
    TIP: Make sure the situation you were involved in was difficult to resolve. Explain during your response to the interview question how you went through the process of helping the individual during their vulnerable stage and how you sought a resolution to their problem. Remember to use the STAR technique I showed you in the video!
    Interview question 2. Describe when you have used your initiative in a situation.
    Interview Question 3. Describe a time when you have taken responsibility for solving a difficult problem.
    Interview Question 4. Describe a time when you have assisted someone to overcome a difficult situation or problem.
    TIP 7 - Be prepared for probing interview questions
    Probing questions might be:
    o How did the situation make you feel?
    o Upon reflection, would you do something different next time, if the same situation arose?
    o Why do you think the other person reacted as they did?
    o Did you feel you coped with the situation well?
    TIP 8 - Invest in your own development.

    Hi Richard,
    I've got your book. You helped me get into the specials last year. I'm in for the regular police officer application this year. I've got my assessment centre in 2 weeks. I'd just like to thank you for helping me pass the selection process for the specials and hope that you're guidance is enough to pass this year too.

    With the help of your book and RUclips channel I passed my police interview and assessment..yeaaa.
    My advise is, learn the core values and have very strong answers. I had these recorded on my phone including my application and listened to them at every opportunity .
    do your home work and try and get out on patrol with your chosen force.
    Thank you.

    Another great vid Richard. Got my Police Scotland assessment centre on Saturday so going through your videos again. Also have all the HowToBecome books and spoke to you after one of your seminars in November :)
    This will be the first and only interview and been told it is based on the CVF with emphasis on values rather than just competencies, so probably more questions like "how would you react..." rather than "tell me about a time...". My strategy will to be prepare some examples for both style, and a few each to cover all competencies and values

      @@CareerVidz hey Richard, realised it was Dave who did the seminar, but watched all your vids and took loads of notes. It was tough but I managed to pass! So thanks again to both of you, the videos, books and seminar were all invaluable and I'd strongly recommend anyone to do the same as I did to maximise their chances

    Should you use different examples for the competency interview from your application form. As I fear I used my best examples in my application form
    P.s thanks for the videos and have found your book very helpful

      Hey Andy, no problem and I am pleased you found it useful.
      Unless they tell you otherwise, I would use the same examples as the ones on your application form. Of course, it would be great if you had more examples, but if you don't, use the ones on your form.
      All the best,
      Richard

      It's an interesting question. The obvious answer is to give the example you gave on the application form if it got a good score, but the interviewers should not just ask for an example of the competency (but bear in mind that there are plenty of bad interviewers out there). So, take the Civil Service, one competency is 'Delivering at Pace'. Say your example on the form got a really good score (CS ones are out of 7, so say you scored a 6 or 7) if they ask 'Give us an example of when you delivered at pace' I'd be very tempted (but of course wouldn't do it) to just read out my example from the form. However, a good interviewer will have picked out an element of the competency, so the question might be 'Can you give an example of when you delivered a project or piece of work etc to a deadline?'. If your application form example was great, but there wasn't really a deadline to meet, then don't use it. I think people often don't take into account that, although they may have thorougly prepared for an interview, that doesn't mean your interviewers will necessarily be any good. On the other hand, with big national campaigns (police officer, immigration officer, HMRC officer, National Crime Agency etc) then everyone just has to toe the line and ask the same questions of each applicant, to ensure fairness.

    I applied last week and didn’t make it unfortunately. I failed on the ‘behavioural questionnaire’ I don’t really know what I failed on, there were number of statements which I had to rank whether I agreed with them or disagreed. I tried to refer to the core competencies and values frameworks when necessary but it obviously didn’t work. Can anyone give any advice ? Thanks

    • @vxSMOKEYxv
      @vxSMOKEYxv 4 года назад +1

      I just passed that. Answer them in the context of being a police officer. I never picked "disagree" for any question either. No question shared the same agreement level either. Try again mate

    • @paulthompson8996
      @paulthompson8996 4 года назад +1

      This won't be much help, but it's a game. I haven't gone for police officer, but I've done loads of civil service online tests on situation judgement etc, you often need to get past them to even submit an application. Very hard to know what they want, as there are no 'right or wrong' answers and most of them time I wouldn't do exactly what they suggest ie they usually ask you to rank actions in order from 'Very useful' to 'Poor action'. Most of them you might as well toss a coin. As someone else said, just apply again when you get the chance.

    • @willking9763

      Matt you didn’t disagree for any of them? But there are 50 some odd questions in total, and how do you mean no question shared the same agreement ?
