Rare is a pricing ploy. And if a person waits 12 months, that same plant will not be $3,000 but around $50 because of tissue culturing. Something may be rare today but so quickly become common due to technology and worldwide shipping.

yes and no. Not every plant can be grown from TC, so a plant can be rare and expensive because propagation is limited. For example, there are Phragmipedium orchid hybrids where a singular plant out of the batch is exceptional and highly awarded. They can only be vegetatively propagated by division, so if you want a clone of that actual plant, you're going to pay for it and the price is never really going to come down.
Rare is used way too often as a pricing ploy, but isn't always wrong.

hahahahaha, you are kinda funny, that's exactly how I look at it too, and I totally agree with everything you said about having to many steps to care for your plants, I would never ever want any of my plants behind closed doors, I'd want all mine out in the open, and that's bad enough having to clean the surroundings, let alone have the whole cabinet to clean, having moving plants in and out back and forth the whole nine yard? no no no no noooooo Not ever going to happen, I've spotted that from the very start, NOT something I'd want. I like honest people that say it as it is straight forward, but not downing on anybody, because people like different things, do things differently, but made me laugh because I see myself saying that over and over when I saw someone showing off their plant cabinet, I said exact same thing you've mentioned.

I am absolutely getting a cabinet after I move, but just one. I can't imagine building and maintaining more than one, but there's a couple plants I think would do really well in that environment. But I agree, it's definitely not a new trend. My husband has an incredibly cute little terrarium but he keeps isopods in it not just plants.
I'm with you on orchids generally but some are incredibly awesome like the bulbophyllum medusae. Not that I think I could actually get that to bloom anyway if I tried.
I actually think rare plants are dying with tc taking off and anyone being able to do it at home. I'm excited to see previously "rare" plants easily accessible, speaking of which. I hope hoya in general get more popular because I really want more to be accessible and cheaper.

I also love Hoyas, and currently love philodendron more. I agree completely about "rare" plants. Uncommon is a better term. It's interesting when certain plants are readily available on one side of the Atlantic and hard to find on the other. In the United States, Hoya linearis is hard to find and expensive in small sizes, not so in the United Kingdom. Sansevieria (dracaena) Bantel's Sensation common in the United States, impossible to get for Miro of Basie Plants.

@thecozyplantco at one point or another, I had all the " traditional" favorite ones that today's plant connoisseur would find mediocre. Before the Silvers and Grey everything. Until about a year ago I had a hoya pubicalyx that I've had for 30+ years. Endora (that was my pet name for her...I was a fan of 'Bewitched') At its peak, it was growing in a basket in my backyard in a tree ( in Florida). The most spectacular thing I've ever grown. It started wrapping itself around the branches, and so I decided to take it down and move it elsewhere. It measured it to 18 feet in length. I wish they had the tech back then like they do now. I would have taken video, but all I got was a Pic I took from the rooftop of my house with a disposable camera. She roughed it out for years. Chopped back many times after enduring cold winters. Was still looking nice about a years ago.
But to answer your question. I always liked the easy ones Pubicalyx, the carnosa hybrids. Archiboldiana, macgillivirayi, surigeoensis( whose flowers smell like fresh cut celery), subclava, Dee Dee's Big One ( I believe it's called Skinneriana now), merrillii, latifolia. I really loved the big leaved types. I was also a fan of Angelwing begonia or cane types. And yes, I do believe they'll make a comeback. Also, when I say gesneraids, I'm not necessarily talking about African violets, but the other lesser knows ones, the columnea, nemathanthus, the episcias and the like.

It’s because of Hoya obsessed people that prices are so high. It’s simple supply and demand. If the market refuses to pay these crazy prices, then the prices will come down. Either that or Costa Farms further floods the market with tc Hoyas they haven’t already done. I know this is obvious but i just had to say it.
