I am Danish and watched this sublime performance by the Danish symphony orchestra first time when they approached 100.000 views and then thought to myself that the entire world really should watch it. It makes me so happy that now over 125 million people have watched it and have been able to share the experience. Great composition. performed to perfection, filmed with thought and understanding, great sound job and all done in one take in front of a live audience. This orchestra are financed by the Danish taxpayers and I am thus also happy to have chipped in. The internet have brought us good, bad and ugly stuff. This are good gold! The great Ennio Morricone conducted his masterpieces with a financially-strapped orchestra. The brilliant infusion of fewer but diverse instruments resulted in the iconic music that is unmistakably his.
The first time I saw and heard the Soprano sing, the angel in the upper balcony, she caused me to tear up, and get chills. 3 years later, I'm still effected by Christine Nonbo Andersen singing in this video. This was also the first time she had done a movie score, and it catapulted her into world fame afterwards, and now with over 125 Million Views. Incredible! Thanks for reviewing.
What it takes to get into an orchestra like this? EVERYTHING! Its also why these orchestras often have a lot of international musicians. The best of the best.
This was SPECTACULAR! What an amazing video. The camera knew exactly where to point in advance. And all the performances were stellar. Thank you so much, Dave! And thank you for a great reaction, Nick and Lex!
It is DR (Denmarks Radio), they do have Television department too, and they have filmed the orchestra hundred of times since the 50s. DR started with radio, then came TV, but they still kept the name Danmarks Radio. DR Symphony Orchestra is taxpayer funded and their purpose is to deliver music to DR's Radio and TV productions, but also to the people and not only the hardcore elite classic audience, but everybody. Sometimes they arrange concerts for kids and teaching them about the trade and instruments. DR also have a Big Band, same professionalism, you can even meet the two orchestras in the same concert. If I remember right, they have 6 or 7 choirs, from small kids (6-8 years) choir up to the big choir we see here in this concert. The Soprano Christine Nonbo Andersen, is a product of DR's choirs, she started as 12-year-old, advanced through several choirs. Then she went to music conservatory in Copenhagen, after graduation DR hired her as a Soprano in 2017. This concert, you just saw, was her first solo. I believe she did fine. Tuva Semmingsen is freelance, so you can hire her for a concert. If you need a place to put up your concert, you can rent the concert house too. 1800 seats for spectators or just one of the minor studios, there are 4 of them. The Orchestra was "born" on the 28th of October 1925!.......... So next year is the 100th birthday and knowing DR (I am a Dane), they won't waste a good celebration. Maybe something big is coming, who knows? Keep an eye on their homepage.
This is brilliant...listening to it while watching the movie gives it no justice, but listening to it and watching the Danish orchestra conducted by Sara Hicks and the vocals is truly amazing.
A great song from a great western by one of the greatest film composers ever. Home run, Dave! When I hear this soundtrack, I always can smell, stale, sweat, refried beans, and the buzzing of an annoying fly, that cannot be swatted. Great video of a great performance from great the reactors in the west. I think there’s a professional whistling academy in Tupelo Mississippi. 😂 hope you watch the movie soon. Love to hear your reaction.
Can never go wrong with Ennio Morricone listen to the soundtracks of (1986) The Mission and (2000) Malena just to name a couple from his magnificent discography.
you might wanna react to another version of 'L'estasi dell'Oro' (Ecstasy of Gold).... it's from an open air live concert in Venice, Italy in 2007..... the composer himself arranged it, conducted it and the solo singer/choir is amazing and my favorite version.... (hint: turn up the volume) search for: " Ennio Morricone - L'estasi dell'Oro (In Concerto - Venezia 10.11.07) "....
My wife and I went to Copenhagen last year to attend a performance of this and other pieces. Truly wonderful to hear it live. I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you ever get the chance, grab it! You won't regret it.
Talk about putting goose bumps on your goose bumps. The whole performance was amazing. The English Horn, was without a doubt a highlight of the all the instruments in the orchestra, but the balance of the entire orchestra, where you could pick one section out of the whole and yet each section of instruments neither overpowered the sound of the others. An amazing performance, and great reactions by both of you.
Morricone didn't have much of a budget for this score so he wrote it around the instruments, and voices, that he could get, and the result was a masterpiece. In fact, the whole movie was on a shoestring budget. I saw an interview of Clint Eastwood discussing his part in the movie. The outfit he wore in the movie, he had to furnish himself. He said he went to a charity store where clothes were donated and created the outfit from clothes he bought there. He bought the cheapest cigars he could find in California, cut them in half, and used them in the movie. The spaghetti westerns created by Sergio Leone were films with an Italian director and composer, financed by Germans, filmed in Spain with an American leading star. Clint spoke no Italian and Sergio spoke no English, and yet they still created stellar films.
This is one of the very best of its kind. I know you both are gonna love it. Watch out for the hangman! Essential Morrocone films for music, visuals, story, location, and acting..."The Mission" with DeNiro and Jeremy Irons and "Gabriel's Oboe". Also "Cinema Paradiso"...the "Close to the Edge" of Italian love stories...with a climax of climaxes. Best Foreign film that year.
Yes, all terrific scores. Morricone gave us so much until his death three years ago at 91. I cry helplessly at the end of Cinema Paradiso every time I watch it.
@@JKonstage Same here mate. I saw it for probably the tenth time about a month ago on Turner Classic Movies. When father died, "Gabriel's Oboe" came on the radio, and thus became the song played at his funeral. He was a rare and kind gentleman who even looked a bit like Jeremy Irons. Morrocone is king. RIP
Everyone needs to check out their other work, would be great to see Nick and Lex react to them. They do The Godfather, James Bond, Once Upon A Time in America, A Fistful of Dollars and so much more. So much talent in one place, every one has to be perfect or the whole piece is ruined. Amazing
Some songs by Ennio Morricone that you should listen to. I can't tell you which one I prefer. "Rabbia e Tarantella" (used from Tarantino in Inglourious Basterds) "Chi Mai". (in the version used by the film "Le professionnel") "Il Mucchio selvaggio" (from the movie My Name is Nobody) "Ancora Qui" sung by Elisa, also author of the text (used in Tarantino's Django U.) "The Great Silence - Restless" (From the film "The Great Silence") "Jill's Theme (From "Once Upon a Time in the West) "Gabriel's Oboe" (From The Mission) "Deborah's Theme" (From Once upon a Time in America)
I can feel the dust, the grit, & the sweat. Can’t you just envision the good, the bad and the snake-eyed ugly?! Great selection and reaction. And yes, Tarantino carries the banner … 😽💕
Hi Michelle, Michelle, I think we have the same reaction in the way that that film is created with those eyes Darding back-and-forth those close-up of wrinkly faces beaten by the sun. You can smell the stench and taste the gunpowder in your mouth. Ha ha I had the same feeling.
Your commitment to music is evident you understand what it goes in to see a performance like this your professionalism your dedication to craft is truly amazing. You both should be proud of what you bring as you understand what the truth is in music.
"The Ecstacy of Gold" plays in the movie when the character of Tuco is racing through the cemetery, "hearing" the gold calling to him but he doesn't know which grave it buried in.
The 'board' is a percussion instrument called a slapstick, just fyi. Note that the gal singer who whistles is wearing earings that are a gun. Love the English Horn solo!
You guys rock. Good job. You're the first reactors I'v seen to display a doors album cover on your set. You know what you're doing, and you do it well.
Bernard Herrmann for his 1951 score for THE DAY THE EARTH STOID STILL had a very unusual combination of instruments including electric guitar, electric bass, electric violin, electric cello, 2 theramin, horns, electric keyboard, organs, 2 pianos and timpani etc., but of course it was for a sci-fi mileau rather than a Western so much different approach.
@@Dave-hb7lx That was Sorcerer, and TG may have been interesting forr The Exorcist. But I think Tubular Bells fit perfectly. Unlike Wang Chung’s score for his movie To Live and Die in L.A. Ugh.
@@Dave-hb7lx Bernard Herrmann was actually picked first by Freidkin to do the score for The Excorcist, but Herrmann frankly couldn't stand him or his methods concerning film scoring. This Danish Symphony Orchestra do everything from classical music, Danish folk music, Cartoons and Children tunes, to Sci-fi like Star Wars and Star Trek and all sorts of other film and also PC and original video game music, inviting Eímear Noone, best known for her award-winning work as both a conductor and composer of video game music, that includes 26 film and video game titles, like being the original conductor of Overwatch, Diablo III, Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, and not least both a composer and the conductor of World of Warcraft and its expansions.
waa waa lady, so so serious violin player, horn player with whale lungs and angel on balcony. they also released a video interview with the singers in this. very good information
Lex's comment about how much work goes into these orchestral movie scores is interesting. If you want to see an example of an orchstral group working out it's collective skin, consider cartoon music. In the UK there are a series of orchestral concerts performed over the summer months called "The Proms" and in one The John Wilson Orchestra performed a medley of music from classic Tom & Jerry cartoons and i was utterly open-mouthed at how intricate and complex it was - and that the orchestra carried it off with such style (and enjoyment it seemed). The video can be found on RUclips.
The 300 million dollar DR Concerthall was build like a massive wooden instrument. That is why the acustics are so good that you can place a singer in the audience and get a perfect sound. This makes me proud to be from Denmark!
I bet the year or two immediately after this, most of the high school bands in the country had this song on their music stands! :))) Lucky, lucky SOBs!
Great Morricone. Good performance of Danish National Simphony Orchestra. You will probably love also Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden playing Nuovo Cinema Paradiso.
Great reaction 👍 In regards to Metallica using The Good, The Bad and The Ugly as their opener, they have done that at every single concert since 1983 long before working with Michael Kamen (RIP)
The soloist at 8:05 is playing an english horn. Like the oboe, it is a double reed instrument. English horn is a little longer; mouthpiece is bent at an angle whereas the oboe mouthpiece is straight.
If any music causes an emotional response it is truly touching you at your core. One does not truly hear the music when watching the movie it is from it is in the background. Once it is moved to the forefront and played by a full orchestra, not the smaller size orchestra Ennio Morricone had, can it be truly enjoyed in all of it's majesty. Causing us to have an emotional response to all parts of it, from the chills one gets to the tears that may fall from our eyes, this is emotional music at it's finest. A little known fact about Ennio Morricone he also wrote the soundtrack for the movie The Untouchables in 1987 earning him a nomination for the Academy Award for that sound track. He was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2007, but won his first Oscar in 2016 for the movie Hateful Eight for best score.
The Wawa lady is Tuva Semmingsen a highly trained opera singer, you should look up The Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the have there own side here on RUclips
If you want to hear another Morricone melody you should listen to Gabriels Oboe played by Henrik Goldschmidt and the Faroe Symphony Orchestra. It is from "The Mission". I think it has some million views on You Tube - . You will love it. Btw. - these musicians has a long education and enters the orchestra after winning a competition with other musicians after a period ..Henrik has played with some of the best orchestras - and has also made his own "Middle East Peace Orchestra" many years ago - and now is the founder of a musicschool for children in Copenhagen.
Glad you went out of your comfort zone as it were great reaction to a special performance , there is another one worth looking at it is a drum exibition by the royal marine drum corp this is equally epic as this one
back in the 80s, when i was in college, to make a few extra bucks i ushered for the kcmo orchestra for one season. these seasons were very short like only one or 2 performances a week for 4 - 6 weeks. or something like that. after intermission we ushers were allowed to leave but i was the only one who'd stay and watch the entire performance. it was a great experience. i got paid to watch some of the best musicians in the country play some of the most beautiful and intense music ever written. this video isn't really "classical" music. but i loved your reaction to it. you should watch the movie to hear the music in context. its a true classic. thanks for the video.
It's the DR1 (and National) Symphony Orchestra, which is the Danish equivalent to the English BBC1 Symphony Orchestra, so their mission is not to push or provide a special brand in "taste" of music, but all about providing top quality public service to make all who watch and listen, and not least children and younger people get a taste for this kind of symphony orchestra music, also for educational purpose and to "nurture" their development.
The Ecstasy of Gold is in my opinion the greatest combination of music for a movie scene in history, EVER!!!!!! Not the scene you describe BTW. It is the scene where Tuco runs around the graveyard! Still a small mistake to make!
la Danish National Orchestra è veramente eccellente , penso che abbia re- interpretato le musiche di Morricone in modo da farle equivalere all'originale
SO GLAD to SEE you again Lex!!! Been awhile! I love the Danish National Symphony Orchestra! I was surprised that you didn't notice the "hanging man" there in the concert. Other reactors always give a shocked look, and it's really funny. That was an ENGLISH HORN, not an oboe. They both have a similar sound. Every time I hear THE ECSTASY OF GOLD" I see the MODELO BEER commercial which has been using that piece in their ads for years now. I was not familiar with it because I hadn't seen "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" BEFORE those Modelo Beer commercials started using "The Ecstasy of Gold."
I think most American reactors react to that, because of how much a part of their history it is. For Europeans, a hanging man is more an iconography of the western and not something we have experience with ourselves.
One of the Greatest Westerns of all time, Filmed in Spain in (1966) It is called a Spaghetti Western because of the Italian producers. It has an Amazing cast of characters.
The interesting thing is 'TGBU' is the third movie of a trilogy, that Ennio Morricone did the scores for. Listening to the scores of 'A Fist Full of Dollars' and 'For a Few Dollars More' compared to TGBU you can hear a change as the scores become more complex.
And to accepted for a position in a Top Orchestra like this, You need a long Education from a Conservatory! And it is a contest among many and highly motivated appliers from all over the world, to become a member. Especially the former Eastern countries had many brilliant musicians, now working in the west.
Every time I see someone react to this, which is often, I tell them that the soundtracks to the other two movies in the series, "A Fistful of Dollars," and "For a Few Dollars More" have also been done by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and are every bit as good. I've been making that comment for years. To the present moment, no reactor has ever taken me up on it.
The singer is on Danish TV at this very moment, singing music from fantasy movies: Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, His Dark Materials, with the Denmarks Radio Symphony Orchestra. Probably not watchable outside Denmark, though.
I have seen many of your other videos (especially your very first review of Linda Ronstadt, the greatest female vocalists of all time), and you two are so much fun. As for this one, I am amazed that you have bot seen the movie, or did I misunderstand? I think it is one of the top 5 Westerns of all time, with such a marvelous cast. One that competes with this movie is The Magnificent Seven, again with Eli Wallach, and also Yul Brenner, and Steve McQueen - another classic western and a great music theme to go with it, which has been used many times since. With this music by the Danish Orchestra, I had come across it over a year ago, and it IS outstanding, especially in recreating the sound from the movie, and with a full orchestra no less. I have put together what I call a music file, that links to over 300 online videos that play music. One section of this file is a collection of just basically great, clear music, where the video is not of the performers, but of audio equipment, the cover of an album, etc. The second section is where the video is just as important as the audio, as is the case with the piece you played here. My file is an MS Word file, with a Table of Contents (TOC) and an index of those I have captured into this file, with the name of the video website, the performer/orchestra.group name, all in music type order. I list links that cover maybe 15 different types of music, with Classical music being the most. This file is available to anyone who would like it! Great video on your part!

Wow! The music and the reaction are great but it's really wild to see Jean Luc Ponty behind you guys!
The 300 million dollar DR Concerthall was build like a massive wooden instrument. That is why the acustics are so good that you can place a singer in the audience and get a perfect sound. This makes me proud to be from Denmark!
Greatest cover by greatest orchestra of greatest Western movie of all time!
To fully apreciate this arangement you must watch the last 15 minutes of the movie.
Great reaction!😊 BTW, that was an English Horn not an oboe.
Check out the Danish Symphony doing Once Upon a Time In the West. Another awesome performance.
I love you sweet people ❤Thank you for your great review. Many warm greetings from Denmark ❤❤❤
Spectacular orchestra. You will also enjoy the same orchestra playing the theme from The Godfather.
It’s important see the film to understand the relevance of this masterpiece
I bet the year or two immediately after this, most of the high school bands in the country had this song on their music stands! :))) Lucky, lucky SOBs!
The same night they also performed "Fist Full Of Dollars" & "For A Few Dollars More"...
try look at the DANISH NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA list of videos :-)
Great Morricone. Good performance of Danish National Simphony Orchestra. You will probably love also Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden playing Nuovo Cinema Paradiso.
This was an excellent reaction to a legendary film score! You should check out Morricone's score for the film "Duck, you sucker"! It's a Masterpiece!
Great reaction 👍 In regards to Metallica using The Good, The Bad and The Ugly as their opener, they have done that at every single concert since 1983 long before working with Michael Kamen (RIP)
And they are still using it to this day 🤘
The soloist at 8:05 is playing an english horn. Like the oboe, it is a double reed instrument. English horn is a little longer; mouthpiece is bent at an angle whereas the oboe mouthpiece is straight.
Thank you!!
The Wawa lady is Tuva Semmingsen a highly trained opera singer, you should look up The Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the have there own side here on RUclips
fantastic video wooow, Morricone is the best... congratulations. your wife has a very particular English, being Mexican she speaks very well 👍😎👽
I was born in the US and English was my first language, though I did learn Spanish shortly afterwards!
@@NicknLex oh really??? I thought it was the opposite...ok thanks..
This is spellbinding, layers and layers to explore as this music places you amid the tumble weed .
And the "Wa Wa" lady is actually a famous, and one of the best at all, Norwegian Mezzosoprano, Tuva Semmingsen.
She is wearing pistolearrings...😂
If you want to hear another Morricone melody you should listen to Gabriels Oboe played by Henrik Goldschmidt and the Faroe Symphony Orchestra. It is from "The Mission". I think it has some million views on You Tube - . You will love it. Btw. - these musicians has a long education and enters the orchestra after winning a competition with other musicians after a period ..Henrik has played with some of the best orchestras - and has also made his own "Middle East Peace Orchestra" many years ago - and now is the founder of a musicschool for children in Copenhagen.
Just, chills all the way through.
Great rxn. Keep them coming.
Precision talent galore.
And don’t forget the sound technicians that recorded this. And the people that filmed it! Lots of people involved!
That was a treat for my senses, thank you.
The Ecstasy of Gold is in my opinion the greatest combination of music for a movie scene in history, EVER!!!!!! Not the scene you describe BTW. It is the scene where Tuco runs around the graveyard! Still a small mistake to make!
The "oboe" was an English Horn.
la Danish National Orchestra è veramente eccellente , penso che abbia re- interpretato le musiche di Morricone in modo da farle equivalere all'originale
Every time I hear
THE ECSTASY OF GOLD" I see the MODELO BEER commercial which has been using that piece in their ads for years now.
It cant be better
I remember 1st time hearing Procal Harem album live with The London Symphony. I shuttered my bedroom just to listen.
Nice to not hear someone say oh that's vomit/sick but actually be genuinely complimentary in their thoughts and language.
One of the Greatest Westerns of all time, Filmed in Spain in (1966) It is called a Spaghetti Western because of the Italian producers. It has an Amazing cast of characters.
amazing soundtrack from the time when movies were still being made 😁
The interesting thing is 'TGBU' is the third movie of a trilogy, that Ennio Morricone did the scores for.
Probably not watchable outside Denmark, though.
gorgeous!literally gives you goosebumps.
❤❤❤❤GRANDE ENNIO UN GENIO . TANTI CAPOLAVORI ,COME " MISSION , C' ERA UNA VOLTA IN AMERICA E TANTE ALTRE . GRANDE ITALIANO ❤❤❤❤❤❤
