In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm checking out some classic movie music. In May of 2023, our Patreon community put forth our favorite movie themes, and the theme to The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly won our poll. I never cared much for westerns...maybe I'll go back and check this one out! I hope you enjoy episode 601!

8:12 Yeah, it'a sounds like a Western because Ennio Morricone literally defined how Westerns sound like. No other composer has impacted an entire genre the way he has.
exact words I was thinking I ought to point out and here it is. lol Of course! When you hear something defined as Western, its Ennio who made it so. Beautiful piece. Beautiful movie.
Probly the best western and score ever made
you're right
Weird how the popularity is even around today; I remember being a kid and the popularity of this and other Morricone Western music had the same popularity; timeless.
I will venture to say the two composers who have most influenced the genre of movie scores are Ennio Morricone and John Barry.
The graveyard running scene is my favourite movie moment of all time
That and "The Trio" showdown at the end.
There is a GREAT documentary called "Saving Sad Hill". The people basically save the graveyard from the movie. It's amazing.
FEW scenes can match it. It's brilliant. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking of it.
Its a masterful scene
Gives me chills every time.
Once upon a time in the west, is another must see movie with epic music by Ennio Morricone.
And there are more.
Every bit as good as "TGTBATU" I think the film is too.
Operatic treatment. Love Harmonica's theme and how it plays together with Frank's bad guy theme. When those 2 have their fi al showdown, both themes are played together and they fit like a glove. Chyanne's theme music is very representative of a man on a horse. The female leads theme music is achingly beautiful. It is also used as the closing credits music. Way to go, Ennio!!!!
The harmonica scene was when I was a child used to giving me nightmares.
@@knightowl852 which one?
The Danish also did Once Upon a Time, check it out
5:51 The Ecstasy of Gold, is the prelude to every Metallica concert since 1982. They understand and appreciate classical music.
Been there, done that. Almost brings a tear to your eye watching it at a live gig. Great comment.
This is not classical, it is epic and orchestral though. Metallica did make a cover on Ecstasy of Gold but it was the Fields of the Nephelim who composed a cover on Morricone's Harmonica Man from the movie Once Upon A Time In The West.
@@Seventh7Art Fields of the Nephilim are amazing!
Had goosebumps when The ectasy of the gold faded and Metallica punched the audience into face with thrash metal hurricane.
I think this is where I've heard it more often :)
shocked you haven't seen the movie: absolutely the best western film ever made. This arrangement by Sarah Hicks, is sublime. The flute was an Ocarina!
Sarah Hicks is a goddess
has to be in the top three, surely?@@letsgomets002
While I love this movie, I also have a strong love for "Once upon a time in the west".
@@letsgomets002 What is your choice then?
I have since learned from watching many reviews of this musical score that the conductor is from the Minneapolis Orchestra. I live in MN and I definitely need to attend one of her concerts. I “borrowed” the following from another person’s review but I think this was some excellent information …
“”The conductor here is an American "guest" conductor for this concert. Sarah Hicks is the principal conductor of the Minneapolis Orchestra, graduate Magna Cum Laud with a BA degree in music composition from Harvard University. Sarah is highly sought after as a "guest" conductor the world over and has worked with dozens of orchestras all over the word in both hemispheres.
What does a conductor do? In this case Sarah chose all of the music for this concert which centered on Ennio Morricones' Spaghetti Western movies sound tracks. She spent hours studying the entire score, making notes as she went along that she would later share with the musicians during rehearsal, She then rehearsed the Orchestra and choir sharing her vision for the various songs, what the dynamics would be, play softy here, a bit more fortissimo (with force) there, establishing what the tempo will be, applying her leadership to inspire these very "Top Shelf" musicians to project her vision of the music and concert.
Sarah does have a series of RUclips educational videos addressing this very question that you asked: "What does a conductor do?'" She is quite an impressive young lady, very talented and, I feel quite gifted!””
You need to check out his soundtrack for The Mission. Gabriel's Oboe is an amazing piece of work.
The Mission is one of my favourite film soundtracks. It's a masterpiece.
One particular habit of Morricone, especially in his cooperation with Sergio Leone, that distinguishes him from most film composers, is that he often wrote music based on the script alone, before even a single scene was shot - and he and Leone understood each other so well that Leone occasionally changed the pacing of a scene to have it match with Morricone's music. Where others compose music to simply enhance the scene, Morricone distilled the scene itself into music.
They knew eachother very well, since they already went to School together. They were lifelong Friends and knew blindly what the other would do...
Why is everyone reacting to this one piece? Do lists go out to all reaction channels?
How about these exquisite Morricone pieces that get no love: ruclips.net/video/s7w-IeNR9ko/видео.html ruclips.net/video/s7w-IeNR9ko/видео.html
Very nice
He played music on stage for actors. Can be more perfect fit to acting then that.
The Danish national symphony orchestra is by far and away the best orchestra there is for movie music in my humble opinion! I spend many hours watching and listening to this fabulous group of multi talented performers and it never gets boring.
I believe I've seen them do video game music as well. Feels like they feel more free to sometimes move away from the "typical" stuff. They're great :)
I love them too, but you must admit that John Williams has put the London Symphony Orchestra to masterful use.
@@forformgamer They do theme nights i believe, and yes there has been video game music themes as one of those nights.
I find Ecstasy of gold so emotive I tear up every time! Ennio Morricone gone but certainly not forgotten!
There is something about it that touches the soul.
One of my absolute favorites!
Me too it’s so moving and mesmerising
The composer should gotten an Academy award for this in 1966 but didn’t but he finally got one for the Hateful eight
Which, oddly enough, was discarded music from his 1982 soundtrack to John Carpenter's _The Thing_ .
@@mournblade1066 only 3 pieces are from The Thing
Had Morricone been an American he would have had a stack of Oscars, including for The Mission and Once Upon A Time In America, but the Academy likes to take care of their own. Of his six nominations, five were for US movies, ignoring the vast number of European movies for which he deserved to win. In the end the Academy was shamed into giving him an honorary Oscar and then the "oh, you're going to die" Academy Award for The Hateful Eight, which wasn't even deserved.
@@sordel5866 so true
@@mournblade1066 It was wonderful use of the music considering the "The Hateful Eights" was simply a retelling of the "The Thing" against a Western background.
IMHO Ennio Morricone is the Puccini of our era. All of his sound tracks are terrific. My favorite of his melodies are the love theme from Once Upon a Time in America (Deborah's Theme) and Gabriels Oboe (the Mission) are among the most beautiful melodies of the 20th century. Vocalist Sarah Brightman convinced Morricone to allow her to set lyrics to the theme to create her own song, "Nella Fantasia" - a favorite of crossover singers with Operatic skills. The whole soundtrack from Once Upon a Time in the West is a work of art, the main theme just gorgeous.
Also big credits to Edda dell'Orso who is the marvellous original voice in most of Morricone vocalizations
In the first one there was an instrument for each character , the flute for the Good, an ocarina for the Bad, and human voice for the ugly , and you can hear them in the movie accordingly the character on the screen.
Makes sense, but I never noticed this. I`ll have to pay attention the next time I watch the movie!
My favorite spaghetti western of all time. Eli plays such a good bad guy its Hilarious. Plus Clints famous poncho look. The music during the movie really brings this movie to life. This orchestral group covered this better than anything I could have imagined!
I have to respectfully disagree. While the orchestra was good, the tempo was too quick; losing a lot of the tension from the movie version.
The use of piano instead of guitar for the arpeggios was very disappointing to me, and they were too even rhythmically, losing some charm and emotion in the process.
It would've been epic if they included the last line of the movie though!
Damn you really gonna leave out my boy Lee van Cleef?
Not sure how a Jewish New Yorker got typecast as a Mexican bad guy, but he did. Wallach was excellent in a similar role in "The Magnificent Seven:".
@@Relyx he was great too yes. Their nuiances you just dont find that in todays movies as much.
Ennio created the "sound of west".
Before his work, the idea of "western film sound" was completely different. He was so talented. I reaaaally would suggest you to hear the sountrack of "The Mission", it's absolutely amazing - and also every other score by him.
I was lucky enough seeing the Maestro live conducting his music. It was a memorable evening.
This piece has given me chills every time I have heard it. I get goosebumps. It's so simple and sparse yet dramatic, full, and rich. The way it starts is so unique. the instrument palette is very diverse and effective. IMO it's perfect. And it's the way it is because they had no budget for the soundtrack. 🤯
Ennio Morricone is one of the most innovative composer of XX century. It's a pleasure to listen to his music.
Thank you for react to this magnificent piece of music.😊❤
The best orchestra Danish wonderful fantastic
All their western interpretations are just sublime. The Once Upon A Time In The West soundtrack is my favourite.
YES!!!
It’s my favorite soundtrack hands down. It’s beautiful, vicious, melancholic, and lovely.
And the harmonica is sublime.
I agree. Once Upon A Time in The West is an absolute masterpiece. I believe the only reason why the movie got (undeservedly) less recognition in the US was because Peter Fonda played the villain: That didn't please the audience because people were used to the actor portraying good guys. Anyways, Ennio Morricone's score is immortal.
@@rincemind8369 And the sad thing is Fonda was brilliant as Frank.
@@rincemind8369Henry Fonda, not Peter.
this orchestra is absolute worldclass. they have MANY covers of movies.
Tuva, aka 'the wa wa lady' does sing on plenty of them :)
if i were you i would simply listen to them all. Worth it, trust me 😊
Two even better soundtracks are the following:
Ennio Morricone: Once Upon a Time in the West
Basil Poledouris: Conan the Barbarian
IMHO "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is the better soundtrack.
That Basil soundtrack for Conan is one of my all time favs....I have that in my collection of Metal Music.
Also check out the Basil Poledouris soundtrack for Lonesome Dove.
Equally good but not better.
Very good but not better
Those "flutes" are ocarinas I believe. Sometimes kids in elementary school are introduced to ocarinas and recorders in 3rd and 4th grades before traditional band or orchestra instruments in 5th or 6th grade. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is a must-watch.
I thought all kids play recorders in elementary schools at least in western countries. Don't remember us playing them quite like this however...
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was the final part of a trilogy of Sergio Leone films; all three were scored by Morricone. Masterpiece in film making and scoring. The Ecstasy of Gold is an iconic piece of music, you can hear it everywhere (even in Modelo beer commercials). Every time I hear it, it ends up bouncing around in my head for days. Also, can you imagine being a (I am assuming) classically trained singer then be asked to sing "wah wah" for a performance?
easiest job in the world and the hardest, great for ego checking.
Bet she Wah, wah-ed all the way to the bank.
listen to once upon at time in the west to see how GOOD TUVA IS (The Wah Wah lady )@@StanEngland
Italian director (Sergio Leone) hires his childhood friend and classmate (Ennio Morricone) to be film’s composer.
“Spaghetti western” indeed, 1960s Italian interpretation of late 19th century American southwest.
I can close my eyes and hear the music and see the movie in my head. I never tire of this movies soundtrack. Every since I was like 10 or so when I saw it at the drive in theater...I heard it and was hooked.
The singing in the initial piece is mean't to mimic the sound of a coyote (followed by the wah - wah - wah) and yes it is sung in the film.
I warmly recommend the full Danish Sympony Orchestra's concert of Ennio Morricone themed films, from Fistful of Dollars to the Godfather.
People need to realize how important movie soundtracks are. They make or break a film. A great score elevates any film to another level and make it that much more enjoyable to watch. The music for the spaghetti westerns make the 3 incredible films even more incredible.
Killer soundtrack, for sure. My favorite musical trait of Ennio Morricone's film scores is how he builds those quiet crescendos with strings (violins, etc.). Example: the first few moments of the final showdown track "The Trio". The way he builds tension from the quietest moments up to the full volume ending is GREATNESS!!!
Ecstasy of Gold!
You missed the reference to the quote. "Blondie: You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."
This film and this score are masterpiece, the marriage of the two is just astounding, I've probably seen this film 100+ times since I was a kid, easily, can recite the script (as most fans do) as I watch "...just know this Blondie, any man who crosses me and leaves me alive, knows nothing of Tuco"
. . . are you going to do a reaction video to the movie? I hope so, that would be so interesting!
that would be quite interesting. They don't make movies like that anymore, especially not the crap we've been getting these past ten years...
@@Trygvar13 I agree! Even the remake of 3:10 to Yuma wasn't good enough to keep me watching after 15 minutes!
You chose the best version available - this stunning! Lovely touch having a body hanging from the gallows. You can see the orchestra are having a blast with it
This is the best version overall due to quality of the video/sound/production but Morricone conducting with Susanna Rigacci's vocals is pretty amazing. The sound quality of the video is not nearly as good but just listen to Rigacci's vocals. It's not even close. ruclips.net/video/rKFpaCMRWgU/видео.html
My brother Michael, killed Vietnam in 1968 by sniper. His favorite. We loved the West. This is a masterpiece!!! Thank you
Why do "reactors" keep doing this? Here is a link to the 1968 production: ruclips.net/video/fXgNtV7B7uU/видео.html No need to thank me.
Please do more Morricone!
Another wonderful and evocotive piece of cinema music is the theme for the fim CONAN THE BARBARIAN. I dont think you will be disappointede.
"I've never seen The Good The Bad And The Ugly"
Doug, I may have to rethink my subscription! 😂
there are two kinds of people in this world , those who consider this a masterpiece and those who are wrong
LOVE this music! Absolutely amazing & unmatched, in my opinion. The 3 pieces of music from this soundtrack that are a MUST are 'The Good, The Bad & The Ugly' , 'The Trio' , & 'The Ecstasy of Gold.' Glad you heard 2 of them. I really enjoyed this.
I thought that was the ecstasy of gold. Metallica uses the ecstasy of gold as their theme song before they come out on stage!
I would say the first instrument is clearly a recorder and the second is an ocarina.
Not just a spaghetti western but THE spaghetti western .
ocarina
ocarina, (Italian: “little goose”, ) also called Sweet Potato, globular flute, a late 19th-century musical development of traditional Italian carnival whistles of earthenware, often bird-shaped and sounding only one or two notes.
There are two types of people in this world - those with loaded guns and those who dig.
How does ones mind construct such a masterpiece unlike anything before?
3:37 Looks like an ocarina
Somebody who has patreon or something shohld request Hiroyuki Sawano's Attack on Titan Suite!!!!!!!! HE WOULD LOVE IT IN A SENSE OF COMPOSITION!!!!! BELIEVE ME, IT IS WORTH THE WATCH. NEVER FAILS TO GIVE ME CHILLS
Guitar should be louder with more grit.
To truly appreciate this score, you have to see the movie, and how well the score fits the scenes and the movie itself. This is a great theme.
While this recording is good (because the source material is so great--especially "The Ecstasy of Gold" section), I think you need to listen to "The Final Duel" or "The Three Way Standoff" (I've seen it called both and don't know which is correct since the original titles are all in Italian anyway). It takes place at the ultimate point of the film, and is great both because it's the most intense five minute buildup for a 2 second gunfight, and the music makes it work.
I am impressed, you recognized the guitar immediately, bravo
Great reaction... Yeah in 1966 - this was NOT the definition of a Western them ( maybe Elmer Berstein was ?? ...) But not long after the Dollars triliogy - and as we look back - this is NOW the signature Western theme - that's how impactful this piece by Morricone has been. He redfined the iconic western music. It was something else for decades and then he re-defined it with this. FYI flute for Blondie, ocarina for Angel Eyes, and human voices for Tuco
That weird instrument in the beginning is an Ocarina
Listen to The Ballad of Sacco and Vanzetti... music by Morricone, sung by Joan Baez... brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
Good, Bad, & Ugly is a great movie and a great score. See the movie. Then visit a maybe even better movie and better score: Sergio Leone & Ennio Morricone collaboration in "Once Upon a Time in the West (Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards, Claudia Cardinale). Characters and matching themes is a hallmark of Leone's directing.
brother doug, please treat yourself to valery gergiev conducting the vienna symphony in their version of Stravinki's Firebird finale. masterful conducting! Oh, what is your opinion of Jeff Wayne's "war of the worlds"?was it the last rock opera?be well.
Hello. I like your reaction and analysis. I am fan of Ennio Morricone's music . I love this kind of music. The Danish national symphony orchestra plays excelent masterpiece of famous composers and movie soundtrack. They played a tribute to Morricone including famous songs of spaguetti western film, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, The Ecstasy of Gold, Once upon a time in the west, For a few dollars more, A fistful of dollars.
Ecstasy Of The Gold is also amazing! But also the opening theme of Once Upon a Time in The West and try for goodness sake Gabriel’s Oboe and Anything From Once Upon A Time In America, long sentence but All of Moriconne!
Hands down, my favorite movie of all time, simply the best.
Amazing song... no Wonder why MetallicA uses it as a prelude of their shows 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Can you imagine being known as the "Wah, wah" girl for the Danish National Symphony Orchestra?
You should ablsolutely look that film: it's a masterpiece! it's not your average western film
The flute is an Ocarina! And the "Wah Wah" lady is one of the best Mezzo-sopranos in the World!
American Conductor, Sarah Hicks only works when she want to and feel for it, so it is joy to have her also, for this occasion!!
This Concert has been seen at least 23 mill. times and a year before he died, Ennio Morricone gave a Concert in Copenhagen.
I would have loved for him to listen to this performance!
Definitive version surely by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. Ooh! Aah!
Have you never watched the movie?! Or any of the spaghetti movies? You've missed some classics! They don't do movies like this anymore.
The "Flutes," First one was a Recorder, second one was an Ocarina. They work like whistles. Bass recorder most recent modern song appearance is the the to The Mandalorian. Excellent music as well.
Oh, and the patreon who did the "there are two kinds of people in this world" comment was actually citing the movie itself, where that sentence is repeatedly said by "the Ugly" and "The Good" in different circumstances and with different outcomes:

Morricone is all over a lot of Metallica songs, especially later in their career. Listen to "The Unforgiven" and it sounds like Morricone himself could have composed the music.
Bravo! The globular flute that plays at the beginning of the piece is called "ocarina" which is part of a large family in various keys and was invented at the beginning of the twentieth century in Budrio di Bologna in Italy. Ciao
Well I don't like covers in those kind of things, so I pass, I dislike the famous "Danish" BS... To me it's the original or nothing.
Prova a vedere Morricone in Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, Gabriel'oboe , Sacco e Vanzetti, Giù la testa ecc. Traduci in italiano. Un saluto e ciao.
Hi Doug - I cannot believe you have never seen The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. This has been my favorite movie ever! I could never watch it too much. When my ex-wife and I were married and I would watch it, she would leave and go shopping or something. This is because it is totally a guys movie. The movie is an absolute masterpiece. It is a very long movie but every minute of it is dripping with intensity. My ex-wife could not appreciate the intensity of it and just saw it as boring. To me this is the movie of all movies and my second favorite, in case you haven't seen it is "One Upon a Time in the West". You need to set some time aside and watch both of these. Also, I am rarely sick, but when I am home sick and recovering on the couch. These are the movies that I am watching. Hope you get an opportunity to see both of these movies soon. Enjoy!
Yes, the Wah-way is part of the original score, performed by an operatic Mezzo-soprano,; the Soprano voice is also in the original. The first two flutes are a recorder and an ocarina.
Watch the movie, man! It has got so many layers like a cake. I saw it once as a kid and circa once every decade. By time as you grow old it reveals new and new layers, small details that add up to the story giving more and more thoughts. A fucking Masterpiece!
Every time i heard The Gold of Ecstasy before the Metallica Concert, i have goosebumps and tears in my eyes. Just like here. So beautiful.
good choice Doug. yes, the vocals and whistles are in the movie version. the whole "Man With No Name" trilogy is great. Fist Full Of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
And this symphony does all 3
I grew up with my dad and stepdad watching Spaghetti westerns , T he good the bad & the ugly was their favorite, but for me a metallica fan the second half "the extacey of gold has been the stage entrance music foe metallica. something that forever bonds me to their memory
You can focus on the composer but a larger shout out to the performers would have been in place. You can write the most brilliant music but if only performed on a keyboard or electronically it will never be done justice. This were a perfect tight execution that few on the planet would be able to do on same level. The filming, the sound recording and the editing also were very sharp all adding to this masterpiece of a clip and performance.
Wtf. This music made my daughter nuts. Appreciate!
I still have the 45 (remember those) recording by Hugo Montenegro!
You really gotta see the movie. Sergio Leone [director] shot in silent and did all the audio, including dialogue in post.... it's pretty wild. It sounds unnatural but he emphasises sounds thru this technique, like spurs jangling, doors creaking.... whatever.
Did you totally miss the guy in the rafters, hung by the neck until dead, may god have mercy on his soul?
New intro O_O
Morricone is so damned good, he even makes crappy movies better with his scores [ Exorcist II: The Heretic, case in point].
The TRIELLO is peak of cinematographe, the best scene of all time. No contest!
I've watched this film more times than I can remember and now after watching this I need to watch it again.
I love that you seemed sceptical at first🤗 Loved this reaction that also had some knowledge. Hugs from Sweden.
I assume someone beat me to this but if not the wierd flute near the begining is an ocarina. And yes- it sounds almost identical to the movie score- including all the wa-wa etc.
Now you need to listen to The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain do it :)
One the best Western's ever made for sure. My personal choice for number one. 🤠
5:58 you could blindly slap this music on the worst movie ever and everybody would believe the whole movie is a masterpiece
SKY OVERTURE by Uli Jon Roth!!!!!🎸🎸🎸
This score is so memorable. I don't remember movie but this music is so characteristic that you cannot forget it. Metallica played second part of this score as an intro on their concerts.
It's called "The Ecstasy Of Gold"
*Metallica still plays
Thank you for your answers 🙂
You understand that now you have to do a John Williams Star Wars reaction right?
ENNIO MORRICONE...The best! 🖖
....and SERGIO LEONE also
It’s an ocarina.
Edit: the flute thing you didn’t identify.
The ENTIRE soundtrack was FANTASTIC! In high school, I played this soundtrack every night before I fell asleep.
Hope you’ve watched it now it’s the greatest western ever made.
