What toolmaker down on the bottom said. They didnt build many 340 cars so they were unusual. Box stock 68-70 no/low optioned Dart GTS/Swingers with a 4spd,3:91 gears, are the cars that gave the 340 its nasty reputation. @@01trsmar Those are some great memories. I've always wanted a 340 a body but I can't afford one or even a 340 engine these days. I will probably just end up building a 360 as it fits my budget better. I've seen some that run quite well. I wasn't around in the good era of performance but dad told me a lot about it. Dad owned a light yellow '68 road runner with a 383 in those days. His buddies were all about Mopar as well. One of them ordered a brand new 1970 Duster 340 in the B5 blue with blue bench seat interior and auto on column. That car was a sleeper and ate more 396's along with too many others to recall. His other buddy had a 1968 Dart GTS 383 in that common light green metallic. It was also one of those...what just happened cars?? I think the 383 is underrrated. Seems like they are always overlooked compared to 340 or 440....or Hemi of course. There wasn't enough Hemi's the area to mention though. One of the only ones in the area was in a '66 Coronet that used for one thing...running moonshine.
I worked with a guy who later joined the police force in my home town. By '72, everybody's horsepower had diminished somewhat. But Duster and Demons w/340's would still surprise you. My friend had '72 Duster 340, torqueflite, 3:58 gear, sure-grip. Nothing unique there, a number of them in town. We were leaving work on a Friday evening. He was going through a sleepy intersection near the shop, and he turned that 340-Thermo-Quad loose! I had a whole new respect for 340's afterwards. All the stuff we had to do to our cars? Chrysler already did all of that to the 340. Aces!
My first car was a ‘70 340 Duster, original FM3 car, likely the highest optioned of the 7-13 that were built. I wasn’t aware of how rare it was at the time, sold it for $750 I think, it was cheap whatever it was. It’s still unrestored, hasn’t run since before I bought it in the early 90’s, and has been for sale for an astronomical amount for the last 20 years somewhere in TN. 😢
Mike , back in my day I had a 72 340 , I miss that car so much , the sadist part is that I didn,t take any picture of her. Looking at your post and others put tears in my eyes because one day I was hoping to find another 340 to put together. That day will never come because of my health issues , don,t have a lot of time left. thanks
I saw you quite a few times at 42....I know how much you like your duster. They become part of you...the quick 340 built auto and 4.30 gears really make it come alive.I had a 71 myself(with aforementioned build) and my friend Willie had a 70 340 his had the 4spd and 3.91 gear. These cars are great...and unless you`ve had one and know what they can do when tuned and ready...I should have taken a few guys up whent hey bragged how the 350`s in their cars were cammed and would race me on terex rd in Hudson for pink slips...until I took them for rides in my duster..l.ol not another word was spoken...about racing lol all the best to you my friend gods blessings...Jim near Kent State ohio
I grew up around all the cars of the 50-70 era so I am not a biased person when it comes to great preformance no matter who car maker was. I have had great gm`s and a nice cougar too...ya gotta respect the efforts going on back then...take a look around...why do so many people want them...because they are great!
My first car I bought living in SW Fla. 1971 Duster gold exterior and black interior. Manual brakes and steering. No a/c no radio. Built the motor up and 4speed trans with a Hayes comp.clutch. This was my baby and then I got married....sob...sigh. One of these days I'll have another one.
Used to live in sw florida myself. I restored a 69 Dart GTS numbers matching 340 4 speed. Had it about 10 years. Had to sell it for financial reasons, bummer. It hauled ass! It was the orange beast that used to terrorize Lehigh on occasion. Lol
I was about 7 years old when my pop has to sell his , gold with black racing stripes , for a station wagon because my sister was coming soon. 1973 Plymouth Duster. I’ll get him another in a few months. Well cry together about it.
Awesome car eh! What have you done to it performance wise? Or is it close to stock? Man this video brings back some good old memories... Thanks for sharing it. I have a 340 Duster also. :) It started out as a 318 car but I put in a 340, 1973 block from a Cuda with the big valve 1969 X heads in it. I used to race it on the street back in the late 1980's. Unfortunately I never had a chance to race it on the quarter mile. It was pretty fast though , I had a friend stop watch me 0-60mph in 4.3 seconds (in second gear). Started restoring it in 1989 but it never got finished. I put oil down the carb and all the cylinders. its been sitting in my garage since 1990. I rebuilt the 340 myself way back in the day, bored it out 20 thousand with new high compression ratio pistons and a purple cam camshaft, new Direct Connection lifters, push rods, timing chain, sprockets, an aluminum Edelbrock intake, port and polished heads and intake matched gaskets, a 4 barrel spread bore Holley 650 carb. Also a Direct Connection chrome performance ignition box and a Accel supercoil too. It used to be a automatic (a Fireball reverse shift 3 speed) But I put in a 4 speed manual with a new clutch and an original Hurst pistol grip shifter. Changed the rear differential from a highway gear 2.75 to an 8 and 3/4 391 limited slip. The only thing that would stop it was a gas station LOL! Do you still have and race your car?
Nice Duster. love the launch. These car sound nice too. I have a 73 340 Duster the wife bough me for our 6th anniversary. Awesome wife, awesome car, I won't get ride of either one of them. I would LOVE to see more videos of you car.
I had a 70 Olds f85 W31 / 4:33 on the street Could beat and DID beat ....... them all !!!!!! BUT ONE NIGHT A 340 DUSTER PULLED UP AND AWAY WE GO....... I HAD TO REACH THE SHIFTER TO SEE IF I WAS IN 3RD. OR 1ST. THEY WERE QUICK !!!!!! AND HE HAD 4 PEOPLE IN THE CAR ! YIKES !!
You should read into the 318 Poly. It's crazy they didn't continue that design of small block. Way better head design. I read that Hemi engineers got with the marketing guys and spun it to the bosses of Chrysler that it was a Small block that directly competed with the 426 Hemi. If you look at a poly combustion chamber side by side with a Ford Boss 429 they hard to tell them apart. Plymouth produced the poly in 1955 ford didn't produce the boss 429 untill 1969.
I had a 73 Duster with 355 rear end gears 727 Torqueflite transmission, i never lost a race. I wished that I had never sold it and the 69 GTS 340 that I had.
14.42 @ 94 is pretty much right on the mark for a proaction line stock 340 Duster, though some trapped in the 96 MPH range. The example in this video has been heavily modified. One thing I hate about videos like this is that no modifications are mentioned. Naive people then view the videos and assume the results are representative of production line stock examples. Little known fact: The strongest running 340 was the 1968 4 speed manual variant. It was fitted with a one year only specific cam grind that yielded more power than all other variants. It's possible that the 340 6 packs mad as much power due to their superior carbonation and intake, though even those lacked the camshaft I just referred to. That engine would produce something in the order of 260 SAE Net HP (engine in its fully installed state, with all engine accessories, air cleaner and element and full factory exhaust in place). That is very serious output for a 100% production line stock old school small block. And notably, it used a hydraulic cam! The "350 HP" (Gross) 350 Chevy actually made a but less power in the same SAE Net state, with the "370 HP" 350 LT1 only making perhaps 10 more. The pre 1971 340s were among the very best performance street engines of the era. They could put away the majority of the big block cars (e.g, base engine GTO and Olds 442 400s) with room to spare.
Oh yes the “ good old days”, late 1970’s when I owned 70 340 Duster Green, Ran low 11's at Baylands Race Way in Fremont California, from Milpitas, California MADE a list of cars I won against! Never lost a race, this car hooked up on the street These cars were plentiful and cheap back then. They were on every block and high school parking lot in California even a primer gray neglected Super Bird. By the way kids worked on their own cars, just add a new cam, headers and intake plus carburetor ? Duane Heydon
+Michael Vizer I,m in NC ,dude , there was a car show down the road from me last week , there was a 1970 340 Dart there , The man gave me a ride , it was a bad car but not my Duster , but any ways in put tears in my eyes , tears of joy man
ive seen several of these cars run at the local bracket races and man when they are tuned right they sound awesome in the burnout box. lots of old school street racers say that back in the 70,s a well tuned 340 duster could put a whooping on a hemi car if that guy didnt have his shit together!
My Dad/Uncles were the old school racers..Owned new Hemi and 440 6bbl cars...I bought a 68 Charger RT 440 in 1972 lowest mileage on 54,000 miles ! Hemi's with some traction and headers ran mid to low 11's Dads 440 6bbl ran high 11's stock cams.stock heads..Only carbs jetted/changed and headers at some point..Dad has his 70 440 6bbl Cuda today and ran high 11's when 2 weeks old ! Remember bias ply tires,no track prep like today..A good driver with a tuned Hemi or 440 could knock 1-2 seconds off the 1/4 mile when these cars were new..340's ran high 12's with low gears and low 13's with headers/carb jetting.. If a Hemi sleeps a 318 will beat them...340's were tough stock form and with carbs and headers but couldnt come close to a Hemi or 440..I loved my 340 in my 71 Cuda but like any Mopar even a 318 you can make them run like hell as time went on better mods and technology helped make these run like hell ! Our club has a stock looking Dart with a 340 that runs 10's...A 318 stroker 390 or so runs low 12's in a Duster both Dart/Duster are street driven and daily drivers on nice days for these guys ! I Love all Mopars small blocks and Big Blocks and modern Hemi Mopars even 80's turbo 4 cyl Mopars could run high 12's with better turbo's more boost ,head job !
Fact my friend . I owned many 6 pack cars . The little 340+6 was amazing . Never had the opportunity to line up against a 426 hemi but i would put my 440+6 against one . That big block 6 pack engine was amazing . Guarantee you if they had put the 340+6 in a duster the factory E.T. times would have the duster at the top . My 70 duster weight is 2,765 lbs with the small block .
Hi,My name is Jerry. I live in Norton. Iv seen that car in Medina before. I have a 1970 dart 340 bone stock. looking for up grades. I just recently got back into the molar scene. What cam and head set up are you running and are you running a stock bottom end?
Always liked a Duster. Great car's. Also. Always though it was funny putting so much emphasis on fractions of a second concerning car performance. To me. If I like the car. It goes fast enough to be right there with the rest of the pack. Is just about as reliable. Then... it's another great car.
I had a 340 gold Duster in 1976 I had the hood scoop mounted back words I ran 13:8 with 3:91 gears if I knew how to share a picture of my car back in the day you'd be amazed at how similar our cars looked
So the engine was a transplant, right? The last car with a 340 in it rolled off the line in 1973. I have a 72 340 block in the garage with a spun #4 main. Looks like it only went around once though. Bought it for 500 bucks off e-bay even with the spun main. Why? 2 reasons. 340 blocks are made out of unobtanium (meaning you can't find them) and the second reason is it was still @ the standard bore of 4.040. I'm guessing the spun main is why it's still at that bore. I have a fully forged rotating assy with bushed mopar rods, an original 340 crank and .030 over 10 -1 forged pistons. Also have non-smog J-heads with 1.88 intake seats. Have 2.02 stainless whirl polished valves for it as well which will need the heads machined to fit and probably a bowl blend and minor porting. Just need a cam kit, gaskets and very expensive machine work. The car it's going into is a 68 A-body barracuda notch-back which currently has a 318 in it with a performer manifold and an 850 CFM Thermoquad carb. Plan is to keep the TQ and manifold. Future Camshaft plan is a comp XE275HL. Expected HP = 425+ gross at flywheel from the 340 and there's a nearly identical 318 build with 415HP that backs up that estimate.
The entire car is modified, most notably the engine (and heavily so). Trap speed is nearly 20 MPH faster than what the original road tests got back in the day, realizing that variables such a gearing and off the line traction have minimal impact on trap speed. More specially, that trap speed indicates something on the order of 420 "as installed" HP for a car of this weight, per Patrick Hale's tried and true formula. Production line stock examples made 257 "as installed" (SAE Net) HP, per former CAR AND DRIVER editor in chief, MIT engineering grad and Ford powertrain engineer Csaba Csere.
Great looking car. But at 1:05 I stopped watching because of..... Anybody ???... All together now " That F*"king Music ' . If you have the original No Music Type Video I know We All would love to see it!! It's to bad there aren't more 340s in the world. Thanks for sharing this Gem.
I owned a new one. Still have the loan papers. Only bad part was that garbage Quadrojet carb. Sometimes the back two opened, sometimes not. Just garbage.
@@michaelserrurier9392 The NET horsepower of the 340 was--and is-- only 235-240......no stock 340 ever did better than 14.8......any quicker means it was modified. Even the 440-6 had a hard time getting out of 14.0 without a good tune, and then 13.8 tops. I drove these cars back in the 70's Goober---you didn't. I have been testing factory cars for over three decades, you haven't. So you have it wrong----you don't care what I KNOW and I don't care what you fantasize.
I worked for C-P for a number of years, and yes, you are correct, the Challenger T/A had that package. The boss's son had a Challenger Rallye. I had to explain to the young man what a "Slap-Stick" shifter was about. That car only had a 7&1/4 rear differential, which he broke that weekend. He of course ratted me out to his dad as his "teacher". Dad was not amused. I suggested an 8:3/4 Sure-Grip. He made me put it in😁😁😁 🇺🇸
Would you believe that we had those weird Zoomie-pipe muffler combo's that went back, came forward, then went up before the rear tires?? We even had Plymouth Rapid Transit signs upstairs! It was a fun time to be alive.
Stock this car wasn't anything on the street in 340 form. I owned a 71 350 Chevelle and the guy I worked with had a 70 340 demon duster and he got dusted everytime we cruised.
340 ate every 350...I was there when they were new...I had Mopar friends,GM and Ford friends...Mopars ruled then... The guy you raced probably had a 318 2bbl ,then maybe a 350 could beat him lol..
The person in the Chevelle at 2:23 minutes was & most likely still asleep at the lights and any traffic control lights ,man should have simply shut it off being that far behind the lights not drag race material Period.
This car has been heavily modified. 100% production line stock examples (but fitted with the tire and axle ratio of your choice) were at best mid 14 second/97 MPH cars.
Well I was 15 years old when I filmed this just after getting out of a wheelchair so I do apologize for the slightly shakey clips feel free to check out my work now @mikevizerphoto
I remember then, but in the late 70s early 80s you could not give one away.. I think it was the looks I will admit they were ugly compared to anytbing. But we're fast
The 340s in Darts and Duster used to show tail lights to many big block muscle cars.
JR G I had a 70 model too! 3 speed in the floor wit a 3.55 rear. Beat a lot of Chevelles, Road Runners and Novas. Loved the look on the guys faces when we met for drinks afterwards!
That 340 Wedge was the best small block ever made ! Underrated, over achiever !
A jewel of a motor: the 1968-1971 340!

couldnt hear the launch or raw power of the 340 with the music.
Lol
What a giant killer...!!! beating on chevelles lol... That's how you get it done! Nice Duster!
Thanks man I appreciate it!!
340 the giant killer
Awesome Duster you got there. Thanks for sharing!
Dream car, dark blue 1970 Plymouth Duster
+AceVids12 Was called Blue Fire in factory spec sheet.
I was about 7 years old when my pop has to sell his , gold with black racing stripes , for a station wagon because my sister was coming soon. 1973 Plymouth Duster. I’ll get him another in a few months. Well cry together about it.
My first car was a 1973 340 Duster. 4 speed and lemon twist yellow. I miss it.
Had a 70 340 4 speed Duster bought in 75 fun powerful car!
I CUT VIDEO HALF WAY THRU Launch due to music
smilsmff cooooool haha patience is a virtue
Same here
Awesome car eh!
I still miss my 1970 340
340. The giant killer.
Man, you got this thing dialed!
Sounds great!!
YIKES !!
The damn music killed the mood and the camerman must have been drunk
The 340 is a really badass motor dont know why they didnt push it and use it more the damn hemi all you hear about.
@@Firion13 the 318 was used in trucks and vans for several years after they stopped production of the Duster and Demon.
My best friend had one of these. Man that thing would fly.
music ruined it to be honest
I had a 73 Duster with 355 rear end gears 727 Torqueflite transmission, i never lost a race. I wished that I had never sold it and the 69 GTS 340 that I had.
I have a 340 duster with similar set up as you. What's all done to your engine and drive train?
Great video, best video in a long time !!
rear end posi? gear ratio?? headers?? Barney Murray's blue 1970 Duster 34-D turned 14.42 @ 94 mph W 3:55 r.e.
Duane Heydon
up4lost I'm so sorry to hear that? Where are you from? Would love to give you a ride in if
+Michael Vizer I,m in NC ,dude , there was a car show down the road from me last week , there was a 1970 340 Dart there , The man gave me a ride , it was a bad car but not my Duster , but any ways in put tears in my eyes , tears of joy man
i would like to see more videos just like the 70 340 Duster video, the car and soundtract rock, you know what your doing !!
What tire size and rim combo was that on the rear?
Could you make the music a little louder? . I really don't want to hear the engine or launch take off or power the car makes.
ive seen several of these cars run at the local bracket races and man when they are tuned right they sound awesome in the burnout box. lots of old school street racers say that back in the 70,s a well tuned 340 duster could put a whooping on a hemi car if that guy didnt have his shit together!
Now you know why Plymouth named the car "Duster 340."
What type cam are running lift/duration sounds great.
Hi,My name is Jerry. I live in Norton. Iv seen that car in Medina before. I have a 1970 dart 340 bone stock. looking for up grades. I just recently got back into the molar scene. What cam and head set up are you running and are you running a stock bottom end?
BEST MUSIC VIDEO FOR HOT RODS - - EVER!
Do you still have it? Noticed no videos in a long time.
Do you still have the Duster ? Love to know more about the combo you was running.
I remember that car from the old dragway 42
Great times for old school 340, Is it stroked??
I had a 72 Duster I have picture of me at Marion South Dakota that looks like one of your photos
I dig the car. Should be purple with black hood though :) My dad had a gold duster of the same year when I was a kit. It was a 318 though.
Don't make it sound so bad!! It wasn't too difficult to wake that little engine up pretty well, too,
i love these cars
Always liked a Duster. Great car's. Also. Always though it was funny putting so much emphasis on fractions of a second concerning car performance. To me. If I like the car. It goes fast enough to be right there with the rest of the pack. Is just about as reliable. Then... it's another great car.
It needs a plate kit. Instant 10's.
12.09 ? is he running NOS ??
Nice day at the track....eatin chevies!!!
cut the music!
We won't ever part with it
Very nice !
KOOL VIDEO, QUICK DUSTER.
At 2:33 can see that scoop not opened up?
Arethose rear leafs re-arched?
The entire car is modified, most notably the engine (and heavily so). Trap speed is nearly 20 MPH faster than what the original road tests got back in the day, realizing that variables such a gearing and off the line traction have minimal impact on trap speed.
More specially, that trap speed indicates something on the order of 420 "as installed" HP for a car of this weight, per Patrick Hale's tried and true formula. Production line stock examples made 257 "as installed" (SAE Net) HP, per former CAR AND DRIVER editor in chief, MIT engineering grad and Ford powertrain engineer Csaba Csere.
really cool video man !
P.S.. Carter THERMO-BOG carbanator suckes's discs
I had a 1973 Duster with a 198 slant six It will do 55 mp at 39 seconds .But that thing ran forever.
Slant six is 225 cid. I had one in a Pltmouth Volare.
@@danc1197 The slant 6 came in 3 sizes.
170 cu in (2.8 L)
198 cu in (3.2 L)
225 cu in (3.7 L)
340 is one hell of a hyper high compression small block.... This video was a great reminder that G.m products take cock to the face.
LOVE IT!!!!
I have 73 dart sport with orig 340.
The song is called "Worlds & Dreams" by Misery Signals. Goes great with the video :)
i had one! HAD in capital letters..
The car won but the music lost. Why do that?
I would much rather hear more engine sound than the music.
Great looking car. But at 1:05 I stopped watching because of..... Anybody ???... All together now " That F*"king Music ' . If you have the original No Music Type Video I know We All would love to see it!! It's to bad there aren't more 340s in the world. Thanks for sharing this Gem.
Ditch the music. Louder than the engine sound. Bummer.
I owned a new one. Still have the loan papers. Only bad part was that garbage Quadrojet carb. Sometimes the back two opened, sometimes not. Just garbage.
1970 Duster 340 came with a Carter Thermoquad.
Can you reload this video with out the music please I much prefer to here the car
This is NOT stock by any means..even with 391 rear the best a STOCK 340 could do was about 14.8 in the quarter mile
You are so wrong. A stock 340 with 391 gears would run very low 14's. I owned one.
@@michaelserrurier9392 NOT 100% stock it wont--go sell your bs somewhere else.
@@chadhaire1711 I really don't care what you believe.
So you have it wrong----you don't care what I KNOW and I don't care what you fantasize.
would have been awsome if they put a 340 six pack in these cars, stock..
There WAS a 340 Six-Pack in 'cuda, I think.
@@jerryhayes8011 yes and the ta challenger
I worked for C-P for a number of years, and yes, you are correct, the Challenger T/A had that package. The boss's son had a Challenger Rallye. I had to explain to the young man what a "Slap-Stick" shifter was about. That car only had a 7&1/4 rear differential, which he broke that weekend. He of course ratted me out to his dad as his "teacher". Dad was not amused. I suggested an 8:3/4
Sure-Grip. He made me put it in😁😁😁 🇺🇸
Would you believe that we had those weird Zoomie-pipe muffler combo's that went back, came forward, then went up before the rear tires?? We even had Plymouth Rapid Transit signs upstairs! It was a fun time to be alive.
@@andrewp1998 and AAR 'CUDA.
The song i begg you :)
Came to listen to awesome 340. Got to hear obnoxious guitar music instead.
Stock this car wasn't anything on the street in 340 form. I owned a 71 350 Chevelle and the guy I worked with had a 70 340 demon duster and he got dusted everytime we cruised.
Jack Hammer you must have been cruising with a guy who can't drive 🤦🏻♂️
340 ate every 350...I was there when they were new...I had Mopar friends,GM and Ford friends...Mopars ruled then... The guy you raced probably had a 318 2bbl ,then maybe a 350 could beat him lol..
Dicck hampster... Dats Cas Yous Fastest
I came here for engine sound. Can't hear shit.
it look nice how to 73 dust rhyme s
Please sell me that duster........
the dust who ha stevo
nice, straight launching & fast duster. nxt video, ditch the theme music so we can better hear it, thnx.
Repair the dings
Cut the music,
Awesome Duster! Great racing. You lost me when the stupid music started playing.
Its a big block
LMAO.
Damn music!!!
The person in the Chevelle at 2:23 minutes was & most likely still asleep at the lights and any traffic control lights ,man should have simply shut it off being that far behind the lights not drag race material Period.
The hemi killer
Bracket racing.......
11;85, 11.75 wow
This car has been heavily modified.
100% production line stock examples (but fitted with the tire and axle ratio of your choice) were at best mid 14 second/97 MPH cars.

"Filmed and edited by"? I wouldn't take credit for that Pretty Piss Poor camera work, shaking all over the place, etc. 3/10.
But we're fast
...music unnecessary.
Damm!
I only disliked because of shit music against the sound of the engine
