This is a great idea, Stephen! I started using the rods that have a foam core down the middle that reduces that slapping sound that the wood ones have. They sound great in our church on the cymbals, but I am shredding through them quickly. At $20 each, making my own will be great. What I'm thinking I really need is a regular drum stick on one end, and these rods on the other, that I can flip back and forth without changing sticks during a song like I do now. I'll let you know if I figure that one out :)
Hiya Stephen. I made a few rods a couple of years back using bamboo from those bamboo blinds you can get. They worked a treat and the bamboo seemed to hold up better than timber. Nice vids by the way it's making me want to drag my kit out of storage.
When I glued mine I did sets of 3 then the wrapped them in rubbed bands, then unwrapped them and glued 3 more on, then rebanded them then did it one more time for a total of 9 dowels per rod.
I thought about that. They'd have to be just the right size so that they don't come off, yet they can be moved or taken off. I've also though it would be cool to plasti-dip the butt ends.
Did you let someone at Vic Firth know about the dowels slipping out whilst you were playing? That's a quality control issue and they probably would want to know about it.
Where did you source your shrink tubing from? It is very expensive from hardware stores. Also use 0 rings for control on the tips. I like them on the tips when inserting them into my stick bag (no snagging), and just roll them back up the middle for playing. And they last a long time. Even longer than a chewy tootsi roll.....
I use rubber feet from the hardware store as endcaps. It works well for cymbal rolls.
That’s brilliant make your own . Smart cat. Keep those ideas coming.

For the tip part, buy some o-rings. :)

Stephen Clark Yeah, that would be cool with plastic-dip. :)
We make these for bodhran as well. Don't use bamboo skewers. It damages the skins. Use dowels like birch or such.
4:42. Rubber band? Thanks for the useful video. I hope Promark wouldn't send goons to you.
What is your source for the dowels and what kind of wood?
Did you get those things from Home Depot??
very cool! I'm lazy, so I'll just keep getting Tallow wands;)
Tala Wands
how many did you use per stick?
Right on. Don't support "The Man". Power to the people. Peace.

Those aren't vic firth hot rods, they are his homemade version so no quality control issue lol

Gene Williams harbor freight. Dirt cheap
Did someone mention candy?
the ones at my local store for 20, if i measured correctly enough i could make 4 sticks for 7 bucks
And for 15 dolla you can get a great pair
But where's the fun in that? 😏
any chance I could just buy a pair off you....
Try Hot Glue Gun
But you can make your own for 5 dollar
Not sure how you are making these for 5 bucks unless you're buying HUGE amounts of dowels for a reduced rate.
