Once you get in between the first vertical and horizontal parts on the gate you can do a full jump to get by the two trees, if you do another full jump here you can jump on the back of the pipe with a slightly tight timing.

I have to say thank you for 6 months ive been grinding this game and ive been using this tutorial and finally 4:59.440 its been a journey and im not done just yet:)
Been playing this loads recently and have got down to about 8:15. Still not managed a deathless run yet so I know if I can do that I’ll be under 8 minutes easy which I’d be really happy with. Maybe with these tips I can aim even higher (lower?). The more I play the more I love this game. You are a legend Kosmic and I find watching your runs inspirational!
If anyone is having trouble with the 1-2 smallest jump, I recommend using two fingers like a keyboard and put your index finger on B and middle finger on A. Then flick your middle finger downwards, almost like scraping the A button. It helps a lot. 👍
Man im LOVING your videos, your knowledge is on point!! Desperate to learn this game inside out. No powerPak yet which i can see is totally worth it for the save points.
When I try to do this 3 bump method lately, I think that it is cool to do it like the way you demonstrate faster, but do the last bump to the next pile of ? blocks. Sometimes I just cannot see our favorite red plumber hitting the wall, but he did move right. Also, I find it very difficult to do the second jump to the pipe and I often hit the pipe and get eaten by the plant.
Fun fact: once Mario starts swimming in a direction, he'll keep swimming in that direction without you holding a directional input. For example, once Mario swims right a few times, you don't have to hold down right. He'll still swim forward even if you keep pressing the A button. This can be useful for going under the fire bar where the ground is in 8-4 water, as well as walking to the pipe. Just note that Mario maintains his current acceleration while swimming without direction, so once you touch the ground you'll have to press right to swim at top speed again.
It's a trick I use all the time, and sometimes whenever I play a newer Mario game I let go of the d-pad and then forget that you can only use that trick in the older games.
wow u r my hero man.. not just because of ur game which is lit by the way.. but u r so helping and kind personality.. this world needs more people like u.. bless you man :)

Love this Kosmic! I might actually try this run after watching this. Is there a cheap enough way to get save states? Seems like it's almost necessary to get your time down
Tanner Cole you could get Wii U virtual console I think, or you could get a nes classic with built in save states. I’d recommend not to do runs on virtual console tho because of the frame rate
Great vid dude, used to play through Pokémon games quicker than my mates but have been messing around with speed running Mario lately, playing on the Switch with the rewind function is really helpful. After Mario hopefully I’ll have the courage to jump into Super Metroid. Keep it up!
I play on a RetroUSB AVS. I don't know if there's a frame-rate difference, but as far as I can tell it plays just like an NES, with no noticeable lag. It also has a Game Genie engine built into it, which comes in handy when practicing.
if killing the hammer bros in the entry of 8-3 is hard, you can actually bump into the pipe and go the bottom route while the hammer bros are in the middle and top route. Play as usual until the next 3 - route ( idk what its called) take the bottom route as the hammer bros jump from the bottom route to the middle one as you got close to it. Play the rest of the level as usual and in the end, you dont need to slow down or bump into the block, just do a little jump onto the last block, do a full jump, grab the top of the flagpole ( since you already slowed down by bumping into the pipe) I just discovered that today and hope you find this useful
Just to mention (I still not finish to watch the video), but: The NES Everdrive also does savestates (yes, way more simpler than powerpak savestates) so if you have one, you can use it to practice too.

I have watched Mario speedruns for over 2 years now, I just can't stand it anymore, i'll try my first speedrun to see if I can even get 20 minutes
I played this so much as a kid and thought I knew all the tricks and glitches. But my god not even close. I got the bootleg version for my 3 year old and the buttons just don’t work right and it runs 120% faster apparently so I haven’t been able to do the turtle tipping yet or the wall jumps consistently. I might get the real thing again lol This dude is amazing
That's a completely different game. Fireworks work differently, many levels are changed slightly, several levels are replaced by levels from The Lost Levels, time counts down and gives you points after castle levels, the world 4 warp zone only goes to world 6, etc.
i watched u do the first pipe jump in 1-2, and i managed to replicate it on my first try. feels epic. tho i know i'm gonna have to try a million times to get it consistently
My dad has an NES that he hasn't used since sometime in the 80's. We have duck hunt, tetris, marble madness, and of course, mario. I'm gonna bring it out and connect it to the tv and try to get a sub-5!
Kosmic I’ve been trying to play this on my wii U using the crappy big handhold unit with the screen built in. I’m struggling to do pipe jumps, the tight koopa jump on 1-2 (followed by two goombas) and the stairs....it feels like there is a lag from when I hit the jump button. Have you ever played that the Wii U version like that? Just wondered if this is known as a difficult way to play it? If you do have some free time and you’re bored I’d really appreciate if you could look at my channel as I’ve just done a video starting to look at learning to speed running this game. virtual console is slower? that moment an nes game has better framerate
Original hardware usually does. Pc emulators can go faster because they are heavier hardware but console emulators are poorly optimized
TheToasterbox hey so would the nes classic loose time too?
TotallyNotDoggo No. the NES classic’s emulation is pretty much the same as the NES
NES classic looses around .6 compared to an NES on a sub 5 run so it would be slower.

if killing the hammer bros in the entry of 8-3 is hard, you can actually bump into the pipe and go the bottom route while the hammer bros are in the middle and top route. I have watched Mario speedruns for over 2 years now, I just can't stand it anymore, i'll try my first speedrun to see if I can even get 20 minutes
Did you ever attempt this speedrun? We need updates!
@@unfortunate4768I attempted it for a few months but since so many new games were coming out, I completely forgot about Mario
Is the NES Classic ok? I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to afford an actual NES..
HitzCritz actual nes is cheaper than nes classic :p
You can run on it but the input lag is gonna suck and you will lose time from the framerate.
Hitz critz your actually right a nes is 90 dollars and a nes classic is 60
Pizzakidfam 31 you didn't look hard enough
Kosmic your right I take that back :p
Kosmicd12 can you link me to a place where I can buy a original nes
32:01 OMG, there is a RUN BUTTON (B)! I've played this game for years (intermittently), and I didn't know about it until this video.
How did you pause and reset to keep practicing?
Pause = Start
Reset = B + Select
Special cartridge. Has the same game, and allows to do said features to make it better for recording records
I might get the real thing again lol
This dude is amazing
Badabun should have watched this video instead of faking a run :)
Still working on beating the game without dying. I have noticed improvements though. thanks for sharing this video!
So what exactly is different in the arcade switch version
That's a completely different game. Fireworks work differently, many levels are changed slightly, several levels are replaced by levels from The Lost Levels, time counts down and gives you points after castle levels, the world 4 warp zone only goes to world 6, etc.
Kosmicd12 alright thx
@@Kosmicd12 does he mean vs smb?
@@scuidthesquid yep
i watched u do the first pipe jump in 1-2, and i managed to replicate it on my first try. feels epic. tho i know i'm gonna have to try a million times to get it consistently
Thank you so much :)
This helped me in world 1-1 and the first level in smb 3
3:00
uh huh. so what do you recommend again?
You are a Legend! Thank you for the amazing video
Is the NES Mini fine?
Kosmicd12 That means I have played on a slower version for a year now
i believe darbs 4:56.878 would be a 4:57.32 on NES mini
Lemon_ / invalidusername12 Obviously great to hear and thanks.
Np
CooperJW13 cuz they patched the glitches in the nes miNi
Good speedrunner of my life

Prepare for the memes.
Roddy OH SHIT
Roddy ??
lol i get it XD
lol ryan's a 10 year old, he wont get it
i love how im young yet i still get it lmao
My dad has an NES that he hasn't used since sometime in the 80's. We have duck hunt, tetris, marble madness, and of course, mario. I'm gonna bring it out and connect it to the tv and try to get a sub-5!
What about the Nintendo switch version, does that also run at a slower frame rate than the console version?
Yeah has the same problems
Congratulations on the world record. Love this video. I will be trying for 5 seconds now. Let you know if I get it
A+start is good enough a save for me
i know its old but this is a great tutorial Kosmic, well done
Your a nice guy
**GRAMMAR NAZIS** You're
You're
Thanks for this, I’ll have to try these out.
Not trying to promote my channel as I only do all this for fun.
Hope you had a great Christmas Kosmic. Happy new year for 2018. Will you be trying to break the record in 2018?
Kosmicd12 - wow thanks for the super fast Christmas reply. Much appreciated! Looks like I’ll have to find a CRT + NES then. I’ll be supporting your attempts for the record Kosmic! Good luck!
It’s easier I things like on the Nintendo Switch and using the actual game or arcade archives instead of emulators or virtual device
He was a little bit more nervous in front of the camera back then xD
