One aspect that wasn't touched upon: all fast 4-2 methods hit the vine block, even though they don't climb it. This is to despawn the piranha plant that grows on the pipe you have to enter. So many little things come together to make this stage as fast as it is.

I believe the specific rule was "no out of bounds", which, if you like trivia, lead to an infamous situation in an OoT run where one ref said a barely oob trick was okay but another ref took the time down.

When I first read the title I was likely: "what on earth could they possibly squeeze out of that tiny level for a 20min clip???" Turns out this is a strong contender for a netflix documentary....
This is so fascinating. Human's curiosity is so powerful and beautiful that something as inconsequential as finding a specific way to finish a level from a 33 years old game as fast as possible is still absolutely mesmerizing. The knowledge about 4-2 is useless for humans as a whole, it won't help us transcend our knowledge, increase the efficiency of science, medicine, etc. but just the fact that that knowledge exists and that it's possible is enough to drive a bunch of people to discover it and I think that's just absolutely gorgeous.
Humans can get really obsessed about pointless things. The guys who figured this stuff out could have mastered the cello or won an olympic medal with the time they spent on it.

Honestly I just love how much time and effort goes into speed runs. I could never do one myself (not enough patience or dexterity) but the tricks are really impressive.

Engineer Heavy he is a speedrunner who always seems to find shiny Pokémon on his Pokémon speed runs. If you don’t play Pokémon, a shiny Pokémon is a Pokémon who is a different color than normal, has an 8000 chance of appearing, and has a special animation that takes up unnecessary time on your speedrun
I don’t care about speed running at all. I played this game when I was a kid. I didn’t even know people did this stuff. But RUclips suggested this video to me, and the way you presented it was ridiculously fascinating to me. Great job!

This is part of why glitches in speedruns are now the norm, and exceptions (such as credits-warp/major skip glitches) are split off into separate categories on a case-by-case basis. How do you define a glitch? How can you define what's intended behavior and what's an oversight? Never mind that in plenty of cases, exploiting glitches takes just as much knowledge and/or skill as playing the game normally.
To be exact, exploits are taking advantage of some oversight in the game’s code, while glitches are breaking the game in some way. So warping to the minus stages is a glitch, while getting forced through the bricks because the game wants to just push you back to keep you from clipping is an exploit.
Man it’s been at least six years since I first clicked on this video, curious about what the heck could be squeezed out of a single video game level for a 20 minute video, and since then it has been quite the journey exploring the speedrunning community and all it has to offer, and summoning salt has been releasing banger after banger this entire time

You need to hit the exact right Planck time though.
if you make three consecutive 1/2 a presses before impact, you can manipulate your subpixels and theoretically save a frame rule

This is so fascinating. Human's curiosity is so powerful and beautiful that something as inconsequential as finding a specific way to finish a level from a 33 years old game as fast as possible is still absolutely mesmerizing. The knowledge about 4-2 is useless for humans as a whole, it won't help us transcend our knowledge, increase the efficiency of science, medicine, etc. but just the fact that that knowledge exists and that it's possible is enough to drive a bunch of people to discover it and I think that's just absolutely gorgeous.

Honestly I just love how much time and effort goes into speed runs. I could never do one myself (not enough patience or dexterity) but the tricks are really impressive.
This is pretty dam interesting.. i'm not a speed runner or even retro gamer but the depth and complexity derived out of something like this is pretty crazy.

If you don’t play Pokémon, a shiny Pokémon is a Pokémon who is a different color than normal, has an 8000 chance of appearing, and has a special animation that takes up unnecessary time on your speedrun
Werster runs games that are almost 100% dice rolls. If he gets mad, he deserves it for expecting anything out of such RNG-heavy games.
Engineer Heavy he’s generally a Pokémon speed runner and has lots of hilarious RNG moments all throughout. The dude gets crazy lucky or crazy unlucky

Twin Galaxies never allowed the wrong warp at all. They generally don't allow any bugs. That's why speedrunners don't care about them.

Who decides what is or isn't a glitch? I feel like walking through a brick wall is a glitch.
You just wait until the people who made the old rules stop caring or die, then you change the rules to fit your personal desire.
This is part of why glitches in speedruns are now the norm, and exceptions (such as credits-warp/major skip glitches) are split off into separate categories on a case-by-case basis.
How do you define a glitch? How can you define what's intended behavior and what's an oversight? Never mind that in plenty of cases, exploiting glitches takes just as much knowledge and/or skill as playing the game normally.

@@TheGigaBrain It's hard to define glitches but that's why you have rules. Clipping through a wall is for sure a glitch.
To be exact, exploits are taking advantage of some oversight in the game’s code, while glitches are breaking the game in some way. So warping to the minus stages is a glitch, while getting forced through the bricks because the game wants to just push you back to keep you from clipping is an exploit.
