I really enjoyed you being a legend and clutching it out so many times, especially playing on the “very hard” mode! 😆 There were so many close calls. And yet the whole video was great anyway!
If you want to know what theme was playing in the ultimate randomizer ROM Kosmic was doing, it was an 8-bit remix of one of Touhou Project 6: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil's soundtracks called "U.N. Owen Was Her", which is the theme that plays for Flandre Scarlet, the Extra Stage Boss.
(2:19) Gotta check every pipe. (3:04) Michael Jackson Koopa? (3:41) Nice Goomba stomp with the back of your head. (3:49) I like how there's a gap in the ceiling, just in case you did make your way up there somehow, just so you can't get softlocked on the Bowser screen. (4:29) The randomly placed coins cause cutoff graphics with the clouds. (4:35) I've actually seen that interaction before, when I think I had discovered a Game Genie code long ago that turned all bricks into floating coins. (I completely forget what that code was now, but maybe I wrote it down in my Game Genie book, wherever that is.) (5:03) LOL, nice job. Your reward is... eternal imprisonment. (6:23) Ludicrous speed! (8:17) Whoops, you jinxed yourself! (8:31) Wow, this randomizer can do autoscrollers too. (9:21) Heh, Bowser short-hopped you. (11:08) Argh, double-sprite glitch. I see this so often in SMW, but it's possible in SMB as well. The game saw you stomp the fish first, then determined you were ascending when it checked for your collision with the Koopa. Therefore, the game decided you died. (11:28) It's also dumb how a fish that flies into your feet from below will either get stomped or just kill you, depending on what the game feels like doing. (14:55) Nice wall jump! (15:33) Kosmic: "We beat the hack!" (15:37) Game: "But our princess is in another castle!" (16:50) Midair jump FTW! (I know exactly how that works too. I do it quite often myself.) (18:19) If you kick a shell in a 1-tile space, you will not be damaged by the shell for as long as you're overlapping it, so you'd be completely safe from it. This is also true in a 2-tile space if you're properly centered so that you're always overlapping the shell. (18:32) I am not sure why that killed you. I've seen this in world 8-2 of the original game myself, where I step off of a 1-tile high cannon onto a Buzzy, and I'm the one that gets hurt. I'm guessing that not only do you have to be descending, but you have to be descending fast enough for it to count as a stomp, and perhaps for like the first frame after you step off of an object, you're still vulnerable, even if it logically looks like you should be stomping the enemy. That's my theory, anyway. (18:36) Yep, as I thought. (19:04) Bowser: "Good work cornering Mario for me, soldier! You deserve a promotion!" (19:48) Whoa, changed graphics. (19:49) And, changed music! That's "U. N. Owen Was Her?", Flandre's theme in Touhou 6. (21:51) Wow, awesome wrap-around stomp on that Hammer Bro. that had fallen there! (23:48) And that's game!
@@smoceany9478 But approximately half the time, if you are standing on flat ground and a cheep cheep hits you from below, it will get stomped. I can't figure out how the game decides who wins when you aren't moving up or down.
I just got a crazy cool idea, you write an algorithm that takes a vertical chunk of each original smb1 level and analyzes the chunks in relation to each other to extrapolate “good level design” then use that algorithm’s results to create ai to randomly assemble level features to create new random chunks and assemble these random chunks according to the extrapolated conventions of “good level design” into new original levels, then you have diverging paths, the boring and computerized path or the fun and chaotic path. The computerized path is where you have another ai to play test the randomized levels to determine quality of execution, difficulty, etc. then score each ai so the bad level designing ai are removed and the better ones survive, until you have ai that can design original and unique smb1 worlds that are interesting and enjoyable, if not challenging. The chaotic path works the same as the computerized path but substitute the player ai for real human players who willingly sign up to play test these random levels strung into worlds and then both the user feedback as well as different indicators of user performance such as points, the coin counter, time needed to complete the level, attempts needed to complete, etc. Either way you end up with one of two results, one an infinitely renewable level design ai that is effective and good at level design, or two a factory for the worst most torturous levels inconceivable to mankind.
Dont know how often you read the comments kosmic but thank you. I'm a personal friend of coolcord and your twitch and this video has given alot of positive feedback to a passion project of his. It's good to see people that really enjoys playing the old stuff, I still play these classic Mario games even 30 years later and it's awesome because newer generations tend to forget this legacy, specially harder games like SMB2. In the random section, I thought for a second that the power-up flower was letting Mario clip through walls for a limited time. If it doesn't do that, they NEED to put that into a game.

Can you do this for Super Mario Bros. 2 (preferably not Lost Levels)? I know there is a randomizer for Mario 3.
I was wondering where you get your rom hacks so you can see the hidden values like Mario's subpixel and other stuff
