i probably didn't convey it correctly, i wouldn't say half the community was bummed out, i would say 3/4ths of the community felt conflicted. they were happy about a win but confused how to feel, since they'd already invested themselves in the grind, watched 10+ hours of grinding tth, debated who would get the clear, but then everything was suddenly gone. it was like reading a 200 page novel, where you're on page 165, the characters come across a final obstacle, a dangly bridge, and then they just walk across it, and you find out the last 35 pages of the book were blank. like yeah it was a great book, and i'm happy i read it, but wish it was different in this one way. this is all to say i can't say they were "unjustifiable". the way a goal is accomplished matters to me, and i respect people who are like me in this aspect, and i also respect those who don't agree, and are happy with the accomplishment itself
@HarambaeXelonmuskfansif that was known earlier it would have been hella boring. None of the other remaining levels were an actual problem for the project
@@henryst-1I have a question, because I don't get just one thing in this whole story, especially the part about TAS'ed level. IF there exists a TAS for SMM1 AND it was used to upload Trimming The Herbs, then why the he** it wasn't used to upload some incredibly hard, literally impossible level. Let it be TTS with 10 laps. Let it be 500 different pixel perfect jumps that only a computer could beat. I'm not saying that the levels shown in the video weren't hard. They looked impossible and I'm 100% sure even best players struggled with them, but... They were hard for humans. These levels would be beaten maybe minutes or days (I'm not 100% sure how TAS works , but it doesn't matter I think) after being uploaded.
I do like the ending, it was originally such a let down to the community, I’m sure, but it became anything but that after it was cleared, it became even more hype, after all, every other level wasn’t technically a “First Clear” as they were all levels that the creator cleared them first. But this, was a true first clear. A level so difficult not even the creator could beat it. But one person could beat it. They beat the “impossible” level. They truly got the first clear on the final level
Holy fuck that ending legitimately made me a bit emotional, I cannot even begin to imagine how everyone in the community must've felt. Doing the seemingly impossible; beating a TAS level. Fantastic video
I can't believe nobody is talking about the guy who literally performed inputs which only a TAS normally would be able to do... if you think about it, it's insane to say the least. I mean props to all thw community and the 0% team, but give this man some recognition..
Often the difference between truly TAS only versus being just really hard for human players is either 1) needing exact positioning without having a viable setup to insure the player is at the right position, or 2) requiring button inputs that are literally impossible on an unmodified controller. If, instead, the only requirement is frame-perfect inputs, that isn't really TAS only. People do those all the time. It's just really really hard for humans, but not impossible. What made Trimming the Herbs seem TAS-only is that it required so many frame-perfect inputs, and in a few cases it needed almost perfect positioning. But the perfect positioning requirement in a 2D game is nowhere near as hard as it is for a 3D game. If you need perfect positioning in a game like Mario 64 without a setup, it's truly TAS only (where you have x-potion, y-position, as well as turning angle to deal with -- getting that without a setup is probably about as likely as winning the lottery). If you need perfect positioning in Mario Maker, there's only so many pixels you can be at, so it's just a matter of luck and good input control to get it right. Trimming the Herbs felt like a statistical problem: if every frame-perfect input and pixel-perfect positioning represents a chance for failure, and it requires maybe a hundred of those, then the odds of beating it for a human feels borderline impossible. It feels luck-based. But in reality, frame-perfect and pixel-perfect challenges can be overcome with muscle memory and hand-eye coordination. With enough practice, it's possible to pull those consecutive inputs off with a very high success rate. It switches from a chance at failure for every input, to failure being dependent on one's patience and nerves. In that level, some inputs were still somewhat luck-based. But there's a huge difference between requiring a hundred luck-based inputs, and requiring only a few. At that point, it's only a matter of time before someone achieves the "impossible."

dude, this is such a well done video. the pacing and writing was really solid, and i appreciate you breaking down exactly what made these levels tricky. that ending too, with all the people flashing on screen, and the sync of the music with the door opening, was hype as fuck. great job :>
sanyx you're so kind, it means a lot that you like it. your clear meant so much to me for two reasons. first, i've only been following the community for 4 months, but i've grown so attached. i couldn't shut up about it to all my irl friends and was looking forward to the last day. im sad that its over but following this project has been some of the most fun i've had in my life. second, and more selfishly, i had the entire doc done except for TTH for almost 2 weeks and was just twiddling my thumbs. i had no idea how to end the video if you didn't clear it, literally 0 backup plan. your clear brought the doc from ok to exceptional. i owe you one. let me know if you need anything, anytime :)
Neat, this is pretty much exactly what I pictured when I saw this concept discussed in the discord, and also yeah this does give me an appreciation of how hard a summoningsalt video is to make even just thinking about all the small editing bits needed Before I had wanted a video talking about all 100 final levels, but it was probably good that that didn't happen; so many NSMBU Speedruns 😂
most of the nsmbu levels are the exact same, i get bored looking at the clones, but there were some cool ones i didn't get to mention. special shoutout to the one that's all about mashing, gotta mash super fast, i think gravityrad was the one to clear it but don't totally remember
The fact you have less than 1k subs honestly surprised me Super good video dude, the build-up, the suspense, everything was on point Keep it up and I’m sure you’ll see those subscriptions skyrocket in no time!
I’ll be telling my grandkids the story of Team 0% like an old folktale one day! What an incredible video documenting a journey like no other! I’m so glad to have been a part of this journey in what small way I was. Keep grinding, legend.
I can't express it well enough. It is such a good video. I followed this community for years and this event was the simple most important for them. All of the levels explanations were on spot and at the final end you brought up that song too. It brought tears to my eyes. Really. I felt at Home...
Apparently a lot of the MM1 uncleared levels were relatively easy, but unplayed. Not every member of Team0% needs to be an elite gamer capable of tackling levels like the ones in this video -- they need sheer manpower to take down the vast numbers of easy levels, too.
Same. We've got plenty of time, since no shutdown date is looming for SMM2, but when I get free time again I'll probably clean the dust off my Switch, pay Nintendo for another year of network access, and clear the ones I can manage.
I put a like on videos maybe twice a year and this video takes a spot, incredible story told perfectly. Thank you and thank you to all of the 0% community for this absolute spectacle.
Great video. Summoning Salt is one of my favorite RUclipsrs ever and you making a video in his style about a game i absolutely love is just incredible.
You don't have to say "inspired by summoningsalt" anymore. Summoningsalt and Jon Bois were so good at what they did that they spawned an entire new genre. Hundreds of creators are doing videos inspired by them. Their legacy and impact on youtube is so well cemented at this point that it's redundant.
what a fantastic achievement and fantastic community, with a fantastic video to cover it all! mario maker is truly one of the most special games of all time, and i hope this video shows why it is so great (and maybe recruits some people for mm2 lol) thank you for making this, and congratulations to everyone who participated! here's hoping... for mario maker 3
i am so proud of 0% completing a goal we all thought would be impossible in 2017. and look where we are now! with sanyx beating TTH a few days ago it amazes me how we can work together as a community. on with SMM2! we did it once we can do it again!
6:14 I love how the creator uses invisible blocks to punish you if you try to get the other coins by making them completely impossible to get, forcing you to restart.
Seeing the story of Team 0% and how hard and how much time it took for them to this is so cool! Amazing video, I love Summoning Salt, and this video is just as good as his!
Was the admission that Trimming the Herbs was a TAS a double bluff to discourage people from attempting it? He could claim the glory of beating the community by making them believe that they didnt have a chance.
You got the pace and the dramatic sense so right and not many speedrunning creators do, in my opinion. This was quite a find! I did miss more technical explanations, though, that's the main thing for me. Like break down the tricks for every level (specially since I haven't even played some of those games). But yeah awesome job.
Summoningsalt is one of my favorite creators and I’m so happy to see that other people are trying his video style. Also the ending gave me goosebumps with that Home song. I hope you’ll create more videos like this ❤
Amazing video and thank you for making this. The curtain call the entire community had made me happy and I'm so happy to have joined everyone in this huge attempt Small thing as well thats worth noting; the spindrop isnt hard in last hope because its a precise drop but because its actually a spincancel input which is a 1f input. You cant twirl while spinning so changing your state by tricking the game into thinking youre throwing the shell is super important there.
Thank you for this video. I had a strong feeling Salt wasn't going to touch this one, but I'm really glad to see it presented in his style. I hope someone close to the story does a more in depth history of it someday, though. I know there are aspects that don't fit into narrative style like this. Things like the known TAS levels that people were trying anyway (I'm told there's an 81 mid airs TAS level), and the zero star purge.
It honestly goes to show the lengths a community will go for perfection. I mean even look at mario 1, for the longest time, the tas only tricks seemed so far out of reach to reach the tas time but look at it now, the human sum of best is TIED to the frame with the tas and 8-4 is starting to get optimized in full runs as well. Props to the entire 0% crew in MM1 and GL in MM2.
Incredible video, super well made, great music, GOD WHY ARE THE SO MANY TALENTED PEOPLE ON RUclips great job for detailing such a large and complex challenge btw, it was super fun to watch even with the hindsight of already knowing what happened
Are you sure your not Summoning Salts ghost writer or something?! Ngl I’m impressed. Great pacing, great topic, and you nailed the vibe with the music! Keep it up man I love to see the community grow.
I think the most difficult section of Last Hope was the first one. At the very first point, you have to do very little jump at the perfect flame after it starts, and another little jump quickly. I also tried to complete it(because I'm in Team Last Hope),and I was good at other sections, but I couldn't clear it because I had only about 1 in 50 chance of getting through the first one😢
Brilliant video. While I was watching I checked your sub count and it was ONLY 630. “What the actual f-“ I thought to myself. Instant subscription, you deserve so many more subscribers.
thanks! i had 200 when this was posted. was hopin to hit 1k from this but looks like i'll be a little short. we'll see tho! the vid still was outdid my expectations
I'll be honest I kinda find it special that no matter how good or bad, easy or hard, when it was made or who it was made by. Every level has been beaten and enjoyed by atleast one person and I find that very special.
Well, Shit man. You did a goddamned spot on Summoning impersonation, nailed it like a master impersonator. I don't mean that to sound negative, honestly, haha, it just does come off that way. It requires serious talent to emulate a master of any given thing, and you did it. I'd be flattered if I were Summoning, and, of course, a little annoyed, franklyl, but hey. Well, as I'm sure you know, the idea here is to achieve takeoff with this, and then bring your own voice into play, so good luck. I was actually edge of my seat on this, so this is exactly what Summoning successfully does
While there are some areas of the story-telling that could be improved (example: "this was one of the greatest achievements in gaming history" just feel like a lot versus "greatest achievements in Mario Maker history", but at the same time, that hype is still good) since it really hits home how passionate you are about this and vicariously instills it in the viewer), this felt very close to a great SummoningSalt video (don't misunderstand, this IS a great video). EXTREMELY well done, both to team 0% and to you Henryst. I loved this. To give a particular example of a great part of the video: the section from 29:32 to 30:21. 29:32 - 29:43 emphasizing the community aspect of the group cheering each other on 29:43 - 29:51 detaching the upcoming TTH clear from the prize money 29:54 - 30:09 really cementing the group effort part, in particular the sequence of showing twitch streams of a ton of people made it (accurately) feel like so many people were cheering on this clear. 30:09 - 30:21 While I disagree with the hyperbole, raising your voice/inflection on that line really emphasized your excitement and pushed it onto us.
THE HERBS HAVE BEEN TRIMMED!!! I hate kaizo levels soooo goddamn much, doing this challenge would be my personal hell. I never even bought mario maker because I already knew most levels would be like this.. thanks for beating it and great job on cutting the video, it really felt like a summoning salt style game documentary. now I gotta check out the soundtrack..

omg thats me playing phantom odd world 15:48 absolutely fantastic video
thanks Fiona :)
dude, this is such a well done video. the pacing and writing was really solid, and i appreciate you breaking down exactly what made these levels tricky. that ending too, with all the people flashing on screen, and the sync of the music with the door opening, was hype as fuck. great job :>
I didn't realize TTH was cleared. Actually pogged at the end. Lmfao
Great video
Also the celeste music did not go unnoticed
that soundtrack is FIRE all the way through
Celeste’s ost is perfect for documentaries

Yesss, Lena Raine is such an amazing artist. Always love to see her work represented somewhere

I legitimately shed tears at the ending, thanks for making this video, I loved it!
wow thank you so much!
Very good video Henryst, probably the best documentary on team0% so far :)
sanyx you're so kind, it means a lot that you like it. your clear meant so much to me for two reasons. first, i've only been following the community for 4 months, but i've grown so attached. i couldn't shut up about it to all my irl friends and was looking forward to the last day. im sad that its over but following this project has been some of the most fun i've had in my life. second, and more selfishly, i had the entire doc done except for TTH for almost 2 weeks and was just twiddling my thumbs. i had no idea how to end the video if you didn't clear it, literally 0 backup plan. your clear brought the doc from ok to exceptional. i owe you one. let me know if you need anything, anytime :)
@@henryst-1 Thank you so much 🙂
Love the summoning salt theme and I gotta say you have the potential to build your own niche from it
Great work!
“Trimming the herbs is an impossible level, we don’t need to complete it for our goal”
sanyx91smm2: NUH UH
wait so if every level got cleared, that means my shitty level i made when i was like 14 got cleared right? That makes me happy.
unfortunately yes, even that level. it was a doozy
holy, my goofy ahh levels have been seen by the world!
Ikr! Im so embarrased 😅@@Bismarck-S
Neat, this is pretty much exactly what I pictured when I saw this concept discussed in the discord, and also yeah this does give me an appreciation of how hard a summoningsalt video is to make even just thinking about all the small editing bits needed
Before I had wanted a video talking about all 100 final levels, but it was probably good that that didn't happen; so many NSMBU Speedruns 😂
most of the nsmbu levels are the exact same, i get bored looking at the clones, but there were some cool ones i didn't get to mention. special shoutout to the one that's all about mashing, gotta mash super fast, i think gravityrad was the one to clear it but don't totally remember
"...and when he woke up"
I'm already ready for the damage...
Congratulations team 0% for unlocking the true ending ~The Herbs have been trimmed~
awesome video, honestly the best documentary out there on this. huge congrats to the team :>
thanks, and congrats on the muncher stairs clear again, and also thanks for the research help :)
dude! I saw you on youtube!!
😨
I legit thought this was Summoning Salt until I scrolled down to the comments. Great cinematography!! Congrats Team 0%!!
The fact you have less than 1k subs honestly surprised me
Super good video dude, the build-up, the suspense, everything was on point
Keep it up and I’m sure you’ll see those subscriptions skyrocket in no time!
You nailed Salt's style perfectly, down to the unexpectedly emotional climax and sendoff. Thanks for putting this together, it was beautiful.
this video is semi effective recruitment material, you got me wanting to do this in smm2 even though i suck at it lmao
we got a lotta work to do
Apparently a lot of the MM1 uncleared levels were relatively easy, but unplayed. Not every member of Team0% needs to be an elite gamer capable of tackling levels like the ones in this video -- they need sheer manpower to take down the vast numbers of easy levels, too.
Even if you’re “bad” at it, you could probably do the dev door ones or smth like that so the pros have more time to work on hard levels
Same. We've got plenty of time, since no shutdown date is looming for SMM2, but when I get free time again I'll probably clean the dust off my Switch, pay Nintendo for another year of network access, and clear the ones I can manage.
MM2 gotta be way harder to 100% though, right? Vastly more people have it compared to MM1, so there'd be orders more levels surely.
I put a like on videos maybe twice a year and this video takes a spot, incredible story told perfectly. Thank you and thank you to all of the 0% community for this absolute spectacle.
thanks!
Great video. Summoning Salt is one of my favorite RUclipsrs ever and you making a video in his style about a game i absolutely love is just incredible.
If this video doesn't earn a sub I don't know what does.
Excellent breakdown of the final stretch for team 0 percent's long journey.
Watching that final clear gave me chills. Great work :)
what a fantastic achievement and fantastic community, with a fantastic video to cover it all!
mario maker is truly one of the most special games of all time, and i hope this video shows why it is so great (and maybe recruits some people for mm2 lol)
thank you for making this, and congratulations to everyone who participated!
here's hoping... for mario maker 3
So glad to have been a part of this! (I made a random smm level in 2016)
i am so proud of 0% completing a goal we all thought would be impossible in 2017. and look where we are now! with sanyx beating TTH a few days ago it amazes me how we can work together as a community. on with SMM2! we did it once we can do it again!
this is an incredibly made video. you should be proud of it, and I hope you do more like it. enjoyed it just as much as a salt video
really good video, hope the algorithm picks this up cause this is insanely well made
6:14 I love how the creator uses invisible blocks to punish you if you try to get the other coins by making them completely impossible to get, forcing you to restart.
I never thought I'd find someone who could make a video like this nearly as well as summoningsalt, but this has proven me wrong!
thank you :)
Many have proposed this and it was not a double bluff :)
19:58
oh my god the melody coming in on a violin and not a guitar threw me off so hard I couldn't focus on what you were saying for a solid minute
Proud to have helped this project!
Awesome video! Great quality and was highly entertained through out. Hope you put out more!
30:15 i got so excited from that bro great video!
Wow this video was really well produced, it really sucked me in and I didn’t even realize it was half an hour until the end. Great job
I like how trimming the herbs was like the '100% secret ending'.
You got the pace and the dramatic sense so right and not many speedrunning creators do, in my opinion. This was quite a find! I did miss more technical explanations, though, that's the main thing for me. Like break down the tricks for every level (specially since I haven't even played some of those games). But yeah awesome job.
thank you :)
This better blow up because this quality deserves it
This might have been the most thrilling editing I've ever watched
It's incredible how we really are just beating games that were never meant to be beaten, first it was tetris, now mario maker, what's next, roblox?
I mean maybe one day we might find a way to actually beat offline dino game without it taking a century
Summoningsalt is one of my favorite creators and I’m so happy to see that other people are trying his video style. Also the ending gave me goosebumps with that Home song. I hope you’ll create more videos like this ❤
"Inspired by Summoning salt" understatement of the year
Amazing video and thank you for making this. The curtain call the entire community had made me happy and I'm so happy to have joined everyone in this huge attempt
Small thing as well thats worth noting; the spindrop isnt hard in last hope because its a precise drop but because its actually a spincancel input which is a 1f input. You cant twirl while spinning so changing your state by tricking the game into thinking youre throwing the shell is super important there.
thanks blast :) yeah the spin drop could’ve used more detail
Playing Megalovania when you started talking about Trimming the Herbs was a perfect decision.
Great video, with nice music choice. As a feat and climax, this reminds me of the amazing accomplishment of Otzdarva in DS
Insane video man, this deserves more recognition 🔥🔥🔥
I love people putting their own twist on Salt's style. Salt uploads so randomly, I always love to see more people adding to the genre.
I only heard of Team 0% a few weeks ago, but it’s honestly insane! Wasted Summer is one of the silliest levels ever ;)
R.I.P Mario Maker
rip mario maker 🫡 thank god for pretendi
Thanks! It’s gonna take a lot of time for MM2 and it might be impossible but might as well give it our best :)
@@henryst-1 impossible doesn't exist in the Mario community. :P
Incredible video, super well made, great music, GOD WHY ARE THE SO MANY TALENTED PEOPLE ON RUclips
great job for detailing such a large and complex challenge btw, it was super fun to watch even with the hindsight of already knowing what happened
Are you sure your not Summoning Salts ghost writer or something?! Ngl I’m impressed. Great pacing, great topic, and you nailed the vibe with the music! Keep it up man I love to see the community grow.
Very epic video!!! Gives me chills to watch the herbs being trimmed at the end!!
thanks - that moment will go down in history. check out sanyx’s video on it for sure
Dude that’s amazing. Hopefully it gets promoted or something, there is so much - good - work in this one 🤟
29:19 legit Made me cry, great Video you should continue making these!
Great video and I liked the homage to Summoning Salt. Subbed.
Teared up a little at the end. I was only a spectator but this was a wild ride. Nicely captured in the video.
Cheers!
I'll be honest I kinda find it special that no matter how good or bad, easy or hard, when it was made or who it was made by. Every level has been beaten and enjoyed by atleast one person and I find that very special.
"Enjoyed" might be overly generous. 😅
Just straight up crying watching him do Trim the Herbs, absolutely insane work by everyone involved. Excellent video. This story deserved to be told
Damn this video is actually so satisfying to watch
Well, Shit man. You did a goddamned spot on Summoning impersonation, nailed it like a master impersonator. I don't mean that to sound negative, honestly, haha, it just does come off that way. It requires serious talent to emulate a master of any given thing, and you did it. I'd be flattered if I were Summoning, and, of course, a little annoyed, franklyl, but hey. Well, as I'm sure you know, the idea here is to achieve takeoff with this, and then bring your own voice into play, so good luck. I was actually edge of my seat on this, so this is exactly what Summoning successfully does
The true villain of Team0% are plants.
Great work! Very entertaining!
And it was so cool to watch them all trying to beat every remaining level, even tho i‘ve never played smm1 myself
29:32 - 29:43 emphasizing the community aspect of the group cheering each other on
29:43 - 29:51 detaching the upcoming TTH clear from the prize money
29:54 - 30:09 really cementing the group effort part, in particular the sequence of showing twitch streams of a ton of people made it (accurately) feel like so many people were cheering on this clear.
I never even bought mario maker because I already knew most levels would be like this.. thanks for beating it and great job on cutting the video, it really felt like a summoning salt style game documentary. now I gotta check out the soundtrack..
thank you :) salt is a beast and I’d be thrilled if the quality of this video was even 5% of his videos
@@henryst-1 I think this was spot on, just as good as his stuff! and I've watched every single thing on his channel. don't know if it was intentional, but I think even the voice was very similar haha
I remember hearing about team 0% and trying to clear some levels but then I realised I can't even play any of the levels because i was on a 3ds since I didnt have a Wii U 😭
OK, this was very good, thank you for the amazing video, it was kind of moving by the end! Good job to the community, what you did together is incredible!
1:05 Celeste Soundtrack heard lol
I did not hear about this, but this was a master piece.
Also great video, you deserve way more subs!!
