      Gotta be AOTY, at least until Danny Brown and Q-Tip give it a run for its money. The whole time, I was just thinking "wait until he hears Education". You should definitely listen to Pinata, which is Freddie Gibbs's first album with all Madlib production. Madlib also produced all of MF DOOM's "Madvillainy" album, among tons of other fantastic stuff.

    The 'missing' drums on some of the tracks here are birthed from Dilla who Madlib worked with a lot toward the end of J's career, the Jaylib albums and the late Dilla projects are laced with beats without drums

    • @hignz09
      @hignz09 5 лет назад +14

      Dilla is the GOAT.

    • @greyscale2539
      @greyscale2539 4 года назад +43

      The “missing” drums are there and are part of the main sample at times. They’re just filtered to the point, they’re not as prominent. If you listen closely you’ll catch the hats, kicks, & snares, they’re all there. That’s the genius of Madlib & Dilla. In a way they pioneered their own lo-fi sampled soundscapes with heavy, distorted, filtered low ends reminiscent of cassette tapes. Sometimes they accentuate the drums of the given sample by adding/sampling other drums on top. Other times they don’t, and leave the sample as is by merely re-assembling/looping it i.e. No More Parties in LA- TLOP. Madlib has talked about this before and has also gone by the moniker The Loop Digger for obvious reasons.

    • @mdptg1990
      @mdptg1990 3 года назад +5

      I disagree. I think Dilla’s style towards the end of his life was getting more and more influenced by Madlib, which is probably because he used a SP-303 (madlibs most famous tool) whilst he was in hospital. Dilla was heavy on lofi and clean drums until 2003-2005. Madlib was on this no drums shit since the late 90s. RIP DILLA

    Honestly I like this channel way more than rock reacts. You and Simon are at the point in your hip hop journey where you should be listening to full albums instead of just individual songs (unless it’s a new single or something)

    Love this review John. What’s so dope is you actually try to listen to what’s being said and are open to other stuff that isn’t mainstream. Freddie is so criminally underrated. Many just either fake to know this or don’t care. Dope reaction john🔥🔥
